TULSA - DELUXE SIGNED SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT

(CLARK, LARRY). Clark Larry. TULSA - DELUXE SIGNED SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT. Signed by the Photographer - with a b&w Photograph. New York: Grove Press, Inc., 2000. First Edition Thus 1/250 Deluxe. 4to. Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. Nearly thirty years after the 1971 Lustrum Press publication of this landmark book, Larry Clark's taboo breaking "Tulsa" is once again available. Long before "Kids", "Another Day in Paradise" and "Bully", this was the real thing. A gritty, voyeuristic photo essay of the author's life amongst youthful petty criminals and drug addicts in Oklahoma, this book forever changed the landscape of acceptability for the photographic book in the latter half of the 20th Century. The 1971 Lustrum Press first edition is cited on page 260 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 272-73 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 25 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 208-09 of "The Book of 101 Books". This example is from the Grove Press 2000 limited slipcased edition of two hundred and fifty copies only SIGNED by Larry Clark, with a SIGNED 8 x 10" black and white photographic print (of an image that is not reproduced in the book) laid in. A pristine copy in the publisher's shrinkwrap, as issued. Her books have sold over two billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 45 foreign languages (as of 2003). As an example of her broad appeal, she is the all-time best-selling author in France, with over 40 million copies sold in French (as of 2003) versus 22 million for Emile Zola, the nearest contender. She is famously known as the 'Queen of Crime' and is, arguably, the most important and innovative writer in the development of the English mystery novel.         THE SEVENTH WAVE (PHOTOGRAPHS OF AUSTRALIAN BEACHES)

(PARKE, TRENT) (AUTIO, NARELLE). Drewe, Robert. THE SEVENTH WAVE (PHOTOGRAPHS OF AUSTRALIAN BEACHES). Kirribilli, AUSTRALIA: Hot Chilli Press, 2000. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Pictorial Self Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Near Fine. 128pp, profusely illustrated in duotone. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The Seventh Wave" is Trent Parke and Narelle Autio's striking collaborative portrait of their fellow native Australians' collective beach consciousness at the fin de siecle. The husband and wife photographers each specialize in underwater work, and the grainy yet beautifully reproduced black and white images here emanate as much from beneath the waves as from the sand. Their subjects teem at the water's edge and amidst the breakers in a near- weightless ballet that seeks freedom amidst the claustrophobia of a national pastime. A most handsome copy of this exceedingly uncommon item that was issued prior to Mr. Parke's membership in Magnum Photos.         BIBLE IN ENGLISH. THE HOLY BIBLE. NEW REVISED STANDARD VERSION CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS WITH THE APOCRYPHAL OR DEUTEROCANONICAL BOOKS

San Francisco: Arion Press, 2000. One of 400 copies for sale (an additional 26 copies were printed for presentation), and, of the 400, ONE OF 150 SPECIAL COPIES WITH HAND-COLORED AND ILLUMINATED ABSTRACT DECORATION OF THE INITIAL LETTERS. Hardcover. The Special Illuminated Version of the Vast Arion Bible,One of the Outstanding Fine Press Books of Recent Times. 470 x 356 mm (18 1/2 x 14"). Two volumes. Original bindings of violet crushed morocco boards, black morocco spine, and a thin strip of red morocco between, flat spine with gilt titling. In a sturdy black buckram box with black morocco label. In mint condition. This Bible is probably the single most important product of one of the most significant fine presses operating today, the Arion Press of San Francisco. Arion uses the letterpress equipment of the famed Grabhorn Press, type cast and composed on the premises, and an in-house book bindery--in conjunction with 21st century digital technology--to produce works crafted in the finest tradition of the private press movement. In the illuminated version we are offering here, this vast, handsomely produced work of scripture is among a handful of the most impressive and notable private press books to be issued in recent decades. Created by Arion Press founder and publisher Andrew Hoyem and his crew of eight craftsmen, and printed and bound by hand at the press' San Francisco workshop, this may be the last Bible to be printed by letterpress from metal type. Hoyem, who apprenticed at the Grabhorn Press, founded Arion in 1974 to continue the tradition of fine private press printing, and his output of 88 works has included a number of highlights, such as the 1979 folio edition of Melville's "Moby Dick" illustrated with 100 woodcuts by Barry Moser and the 2002 printing of "Paradise Lost" with accompanying portfolio of illustrations by William Blake. In 1989, he acquired Mackenzie & Harris, the oldest and largest surviving metal type foundry in the United States, and this division of Arion produced the 16-point Romulus type used in our Bible, a face described in the prospectus as characterized by "graceful lines and clarity of character recognition." The red initial letters at the beginning of each book of the Bible were created by noted Adobe font designer Sumner Stone, and our copy is one of the specials in which the letters were embellished with abstract geometrical designs resembling panes in a stained glass window, all colored by hand and illuminated with burnished gold by Arion artists. In preparing this opus, Hoyem studied three of the great folio Bibles: the 1532 Latin Bible of Robert Estienne, John Baskerville's English Bible of 1763, and the Oxford Lectern Bible, designed by Bruce Rogers and published in 1935. Arion's is the only fine press lectern bible to be produced since the Rogers work, and it carries a great tradition of grand printed Bibles as well as fine typography and bookmaking into the 21st century.

Faksimile - Buch der Welt . Die sächsische Weltchronik. Faksimile und Kommentarband ( 2 Bde.).

4°, (31 x 22,5 cm) 330 originalgetreu faks. Seitenm 500 farb. Miniaturen., Faksimile: Ganzleder- Rindslederbd. m. 2 Messingschliessen. Kommentarband in OHLdr. Mit beiliegendem Wegweiserheft (30 S.)., Tadell. VERGRIFFEN! Exempl. 23 von 980 arab. Num. Exemplaren.

A PORTRAIT OF SHUNKIN [SIGNED] Lbc

N Y: Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. Art; FINE Binding; 10.5" x 14.75". ; 64 pages; limited edition of this work by Junichiro Tanizaki, pencil signed by artists Eikoh Hosoe and Shunkei Yahagi on the colophon page. This is number 228 of 300. This volume is bound in full pale pink silk with inset printed calligraphic title label to front cover. Volume is in excellent condition. This edition was designed, set in Monotype Centaur and printed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Photogravure plates were made and printed by Jon Goodman from the original negatives of Eikoh Hosoe. Calligraphy is by Shunkei Yahagi. Jun'ichiro Tanizaki was a Japanese author, one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, and perhaps the most popular Japanese novelist after Natsume Soseki. Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society. Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative. Velvet-lined gray silk clamshell box with printed calligraphic label to front panel is in fine condition. Case measures approximately 10.5" x 14.75". Howard Hibbett is a translator and professor emeritus of Japanese literature at Harvard University. He held the Victor S. Thomas Professorship in Japanese Literature. Hibbett began his studies of Japanese as a sophomore at Harvard College 1942 before working as a language specialist for the US Army in 1942-46. After graduating from Harvard College in 1947, he went on to receive his Ph. D. , also from Harvard, in 1950. He taught at UCLA before returning to Harvard as a professor in 1958. He was Director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies from 1985 through 1988. Seven Japanese Tales, published in 1963, helped introduce the English-speaking world to Jun'ichiro- Tanizaki and Japanese literature. His publications include studies and translations of Edo and modern literature. He is particularly known for his translations of Tanizaki and works on Japanese language teaching.         Steps to Answer

The Grenfell Press New York City: The Grenfell Press. 2000. One of 20 copies only, signed and numbered by the artist / author. Written, designed, and illustrated with original woodcuts by artist Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 11 x 7 1/2"; 24 pp. Bound: loose folios of Kochi paper gathered in a handmade pulp paper wrapper of pale sea green; custom made clamshell in green cloth by Claudia Cohen. Poem printed at The Grenfell Press in Centaur; title letterpressed on cover of wrapper, and on paper label on box spine. This is a work of simple elegance, almost Japanese in its restraint, and yet exuding a quiet warmth. The woodcut illustrations in pale green and brown work with ample negative space; these white spaces levitate Plimpton's gentle poem. The simple geometric shapes themselves recollect abstract expressionism, without ever feeling stark. The text reads: "You put your eye on top/ and left it there/ running on/ the black struck walls/ the night to run/ inbetween/ taking a breath to stop/ blind steps to answer/ walking back."         Lover Beloved (From the Masnovi) Translated by Zahra Partovi with Etchings by T. Kurahara

Vincent FitzGerald & Company New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 2000. Signed limited edition, one of 50 copies, all on Apta Verge Royal paper by Richard de Bas, hand-numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, T. Kurahara and the translator, Zahra Partovi. Page size: 9-1/2 inches x 6- 1/2 inches; 27pp; + colophon, with four separate suites of etchings by T. Kurahara, each measuring 9-1/2 inches x 38 inches when unfolded (6 folded leaves). Each of the four suites is on paper etched on the reverse - one in gold, one in deep brown, one in lighter brown, and one in brick. These are laid into the bottom of the custom-made blue cloth clamshell box each of the inner trays lined with color-field etch in gold with brick line on brown and reddish-brown with brick line on red. The clamshell box is lettered in palladium gilt on the spine with the title. The book is bound in blue cloth by Zahra Partovi. The binding is a long stitch technique using only one piece of thread - a periwinkle blue, visible on the spine in five different lengths on top and bottom with title stamped in palladium gilt on front panel. There are four original etchings in the bound book as well as the suite. Again, these are color field etchings and the artists has interpreted this part of the MASNOVI by the times of day at which the tale is set: early morning, mid-day, dusk and evening with corresponding colors - moving from light pink to inky blue-lavenders. The text has been printed letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Aldus by Hermann Zapf in black and in light gray for the Persian calligraphy by Zahra Partovi (from polymer plates). The two color printing is a masterpiece in itself with the moving English translation by Ms. Partovi above and below each line of Persian in gray of Ms. Partovi's Persian calligraphy. The title page is printed in red and black with the blue thread exposed and knotted in the gutter of the title page. Jerry Kelly has accomplished the calligraphy on the title page. The etchings were editioned at D2 Press by the artist. The moving text cannot be summarized but must be experienced - preferably in the profoundly beautiful setting of this book. It is an aesthetic experience to savor.
