"LITTLE BUDDHA": 4 ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPTS for Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci's "LITTLE BUDDHA", with a screenplay by RUDY WURLITZER from a story by BERTOLUCCI. Each different, with one HEAVILY ANNOTATED IN FELT by the screenwriter RUDY WURLITZER. [Together with]: 325 ORIGINAL SNAPSHOT PHOTOS OF LOCATIONS FOR THE FILM IN NEPAL & BHUTAN and related ephemera, including letters from Rudy to Bernardo Bertolucci.

Los Angeles & New York: [Favored Artists Agency, CiBy 2000 & Serprocor Anstalt] [1993]., [1993].. - Four typescripts of the screenplay for "Little Buddha" by Rudy Wurlitzer, all are typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheets and are differently bound, including one consisting of loose pages laid into a stiff color illustrated publicity folder. All of the typescripts appear to be different drafts of the screenplay written as Wurlitzer and Bertolucci's conception of the film developed. Indeed, the first line of each typescript differs one from the other. Only one typescript is dated, that one being identified as a continuity script is likely the closest to the final filmed version. The others, described below, appear to be evolving states of the screenplay.A typescript consisting of the title and 109 loose pages is bound into a stiff black folder with a clear cover. This typescript, which may well be the earliest of the 4, is heavily annotated in black felt by Rudy Wurlitzer with substantial corrections and annotations within the text and profuse notes penned on many of the facing blank pages throughout. One of the first annotations penned by Rudy on the verso of the title leaf indicates that he may still be researching the material as he reminds himself to "Ask Matthew Kapstein about Vedas". Throughout the early part of the action, he has changed the person who speaks several of the lines from "Lama Karmay" to "Lama Norbu". Rudy has, in many instances, penned editorial notes such as "After scene in kitchen / cut to Siddharta / then Sebastian / then airplane".Of the other typescripts, the longest is bound in stiff white wrappers with the "Favored Artists' Agency" logo and addresses on the front cover. This 130 page typescript credits the story to Bernardo Bertolucci and the screenplay to Rudy Wurlitzer.Another typescript, at 88 pages, appears incomplete and the pages are laid loose in a glossy stiff illustrated "International Sales" folder. Finally, a 97 page typescript bound in clear plastic is identified as the "30th March, 1993 (Continuity script)". The story, as with the previous typescripts, is credited to Bernardo Bertolucci but credit for the screenplay is now shared between Rudy Wurlitzer and Mark Peploe. The typescripts are accompanied by related material including a 19 page "Outline" of 96 scenes which are to take place in varying locations. The outline for the first scenes describes them thus "1) JATAKA TALE: The story of the sacrificial goat and the corruption of Brahmin ritual". Followed by "2) SHEDRE: Lama Norbu ends the story to CHOMPA and a room full of young Monks...."Within a folder Rudy Wurlitzer has kept photocopies of contracts with the Writer's Guild and others and print-outs of e-mail attachments.A typed letter signed from Angela and Kevin Arnold addressed to Rudy and dated March 30, 1993 relate how their own 5 year old son was enthroned as an "American tulku" by Chagdud Tulku Rimpoche before 200 practitioners and Nyingma Lamas. Enclosed with the letter is a color photograph of the young man in ceremonial Tibetan attire and the Fall 1992 "Newsletter of Chagdud Gonpa" titled "The Wind Horse" which includes an article about the ceremony in which 5 year old Wyatt Arnold was elevated to tulku. Two typed letters signed by Rudy addressed to "Bernardo" mention research he is doing as he prepares to write the screenplay. In one he mentions that "In a few hours I'll see Sogyal Rinpoche. Unfortunately I haven't finished his book but I still have several things to ask him. Later on this afternoon Lynn and I will drive to the country and I'll start on the script...." In the other, a denser letter, he writes of visiting "Professor Bob" who will be "very useful on the Buddha sections...." He mentions that the professor thinks they should make an effort to include the Dalai Lama in the story and that he "would do all in his power to convince His Holiness to play himself...."Also included is a real-photo postcard illustrated with a color portrait of Rudy seated on the step in front of a monastery between Bertolucci at one side and his [Rudy's] wife Lynn on the other. A Tibetan monk stands in the background in the opening of the great double-doors. A brief autograph letter signed by Bertolucci associate Fabien S. Gerard is penned on the verso: "Thanks for the news! Just a hellish & sleepless year for me too. I think the film is one of B's major achievements & hope the 'many happy few' will love it in the states too...." and mentions that he is trying to schedule a special screening for children through UNESCO. Signed "Fabien". Fabien S. Gerard was Bertolucci's script supervisor for 10 years and authored the shooting diary of "The Last Emperor".There is also a two-page autograph letter by Fabien, originally intended as a fax, but subsequently mailed to Rudy as Fabien has penned the following on the verso of the second page: "Tried to fax this for a whole week... but it never passed through...." Referring to "Little Buddha", Fabien speaks of the "magical days we spent together between Nepal & Bhutan" and that he "sent you a large picture of you & BB taken in some local airport on the way to Paro..." and, in a postscript makes mention of showing "'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid' to my students lately & someone said [it] was the most beautiful Western he had ever seen...." [Rudy wrote the screenplay for Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid"].The typescripts and ephemera are accompanied by 325 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS, mostly of locations in Nepal and Bhutan including landscapes, buildings and Nepali and Bhutanese people as well as several photos showing Bernardo Bertolucci, Rudy Wurlitzer and the producer Jeremy Thomas on location. Several photos also include crew members. Photographed in February and March 1992, approximately two-thirds of the 4 inch high by 6 inch wide snapshots are in color and another third are in black & white. The larger proportion of the photographs appear to have been shot in Nepal, though there are a substantial quantity which were shot in Bhutan. The photographs are accompanied by a substantial number of original negatives.A unique archive. The American experimental novelist & screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer (born 1937) first started writing when working on an oil tanker when he was 17 years old. A descendant of Rudolph Wurlitzer who founded the Wurlitzer piano company, Rudy subsequently worked as secretary for the author Robert Graves who he credits with teaching him to "write short sentences". Settling in NYC in the 1960's he was a friend to Claes Oldenburg, Robert Frank and Philip Glass. With his wife, the photographer Lynn Davis, Rudy moved to upstate New York and also refurbished a cabin in Cape Breton. His highly experimental first novel "Nog" is considered a cult classic. He followed this with "Flats", "Quake", "Slow Fade", and "The Drop Edge of Yonder". He also wrote his memoir "Hard Travel To Sacred Places". Among his film projects, Rudy Wurlitzer wrote the screenplay for the cult-classic "Two-Lane Blacktop", Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid", "Candy Mountain" which he co-directed with Robert Frank, and Bernardo Bertolucci's "Little Buddha".

        All The Names

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace(2000). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 238 pages. The author's seventh novel to be translated into English. One of Jose Saramago's finest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jose Saramago's "Todos os Nomes" in a felicitous English translation. Masterpiece. "The deceptive simplicity of Saramago's prose and the ironic comments that he intersperses within this story of an obsessional quest initially have a disarming effect. One expects that this low-key exploration of a quiet man's eccentric descent into a metaphysical labyrinth will be an extremely intelligent but unexciting read. Within the first few pages, Saramago establishes a tension that sings on the page, rises, produces stunning revelations, and culminates when the final paragraph twists expectations once again. Saramago relates these events in finely honed prose pervaded with irony" (Publishers Weekly). As in all of his oeuvre, acutely so in his late, post-Nobel Prize work, Saramago re-visits and re-examines "the human condition", that otherwise exhausted inheritance from the idea and the reality called Europe and The Enlightenment, and sees it with fresh eyes through the prism of Apocalypse/"The End". He revitalizes and enlarges the novel through allegory. Often described as a satirist, Saramago's work goes much deeper, and he is perhaps the greatest modern literary ironist since Franz Kafka. An important distinction: A satirist mocks, makes fun of, and laughs at others; an ironist mocks, makes fun of, and laughs at himself, that is, makes us laugh at his pain. "Arguably the greatest writer of our time. He throws a dazzling flash of lightning on his subjects" (The Chicago Tribune). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a modern classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago's signature was probably the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn't signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago's achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151004218.

A pristine copy of "RFK Funeral Train" with copies of "RFK" and the original color print of "So Long Bobby", all signed by Paul Fusco. Landmark collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition, which was published simultaneously with it. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Paul Fusco: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Paul Fusco. Tribute by Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Essays by Norman Mailer and Evan Thomas. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of Robert F. Kennedy's 75th Birthday Anniversary in 2000. Presents Paul Fusco's "RFK Funeral Train". Photographs of Americans who went out of their way to pay a final tribute to the slain Presidential candidate, captured for posterity in a perfect photobook: One photograph after another of Americans from all walks of life saluting the passing train, a visual elegy of rigorous simplicity and transcendent power. With Kennedy-esque sense of ceremony and solemn occasion, Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy's surviving family and followers honored him by taking his casket on a funeral train trip. It was a felicitous gesture as Kennedy was in the midst of his cross-country Presidential campaign when he was assassinated in Los Angeles, on June 5, 1968. The funeral train was, in effect, the continuation and culmination of his campaign and journey unto immortality. This comes with a copy of "RFK", published in 2008 by The Aperture Foundation on the occasion of RFK's 40th Death Anniversary, which is a new book altogether, intended as a sequel/companion volume to his masterpiece. Also included: One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful images, "So Long Bobby", a 6 X 6 inch original color print specially produced by Paul Fusco and Magnum in 2016. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Paul Fusco collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the title page by Paul Fusco. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with copies of "RFK" and an original 6 X 6 inch color print of "So Long Bobby", both also very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by the photographer. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed set ("RFK Funeral Train", "RFK", and "So Long Bobby") available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties.         [ Suffolk - Little Domesday Book . Facsimile of the Suffolk section ] .

[ London : Alecto Historical Editions c.. 2000 ] . 0. Facsimile of the Suffolk section of the Little Domesday Book, handsomely bound in antique style blind-stamped calf, housed in a custom reversed calf antique style satchel with ties. It is bound in a replica of the earliest known Domesday binding (the Winton Domesday) . It measures 11.0" x 7.5" x 2.0" ** Domesday has been called one of the three most famous books in the world, alongside the Bible and the Koran, and is acknowledged as being one of the most important historical documents of the first millennium. William the Conqueror's great survey has been used as a working document ever since its commission at Christmas 1085, and remained pre-eminent as a census of England until the 19th Century. It was last consulted for legal precedent in 1982, 896 years after it was written. Domesday Book encompasses two independent works (in, originally, two physical volumes). These were "Little Domesday" (covering Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex), and "Great Domesday" (covering much of the remainder of England and parts of Wales?—?except for lands in the north which later became Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland, and the County Palatine of Durham). No surveys were made of the City of London, Winchester, or some other towns, probably due to their tax-exempt status. Little Domesday was made into three volumes comprising one volume for each of its three counties, Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex. Each page of Little Domesday measured 11 x 8 inches, rather smaller than Great Domesday's 15 x 11 inches. The smaller sized pages favoured a binding into thinner volumes than its larger brother. It is the more detailed survey, down to numbers of livestock. It may have represented the first attempt, resulting in a decision to avoid such level of detail in "Great Domesday. Little Domesday was rebound in 1320, its older oak boards being re-used. At a later date (probably in the Tudor period) both volumes were given new covers. They were rebound twice in the 19th century, in 1819 and 1869, on the second occasion by the binder Robert Riviere. In the 20th century, they were rebound in 1952, when their physical makeup was examined in greater detail; and yet again in 1986 for the survey's ninth centenary. On this last occasion Great Domesday was divided into two physical volumes, and Little Domesday into three volumes. When the original document was stripped of its binding for restoration, each folio was laid flat and photographed with an overhead camera the size of a small car. The work took nine months. Each page was then printed, using a continuous-tone lithographic process, making so exact a copy of the original that the ‘hair' side of the old sheepskin folios can be distinguished from the ‘flesh' of the reverse. The survey for Suffolk closes with these words - "This survey was made in the One thousand and eighty sixth year since the incarnation of the Lord, and in the twentieth of the reign of William, not only through these three counties but also through the others." - See Wikipedia / Addison Publications .

As I See It: The Deluxe Edition

New York City, NY: PowerHouse Books(2000). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 288 pages. Landmark collection of male nudes. Now considered a contemporary erotic art photography classic. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 80 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously with the first regular trade edition. Superior in every respect to and should not be confused with the 2000 and 2004 Editions. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. A magnificent production by Greg Gorman and Daniel Power: Full leather boards with titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographic reproduction pasted in front. Photographs and Introduction by Greg Gorman. Preface by Sir Elton John, the world's single largest private collector of erotic art photography. Afterword by John Hurt. Acknowledgments, Biography, and List of Exhibitions appended at the end. Original 7 X 9 inch photographic print laid into the book. Flesh-toned slipcase with gilt titles embossed on one side. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Deluxe Edition format, Greg Gorman's "As I See It". The photographer's "summing-up" collection on the male nude, his single greatest passion. Almost all of the portraits are full-frontal and include such celebrities as Christopher Atkins, Alexis Arquette, Nicholas Gonzalez, Josh Duhamel, Aaron Long, Tony Ward, Jack Welsh, and Jeff Clark, among so many others. Also has the now-celebrated suite of photographs featuring the shy but well-endowed model Speedy. Greg Gorman has said that what he wanted to capture permanently in pictures is not the muscular, beefy type, but someone with a lean, supple, and clean-shaven body, regardless of his age. Most of the men in this collection are in their twenties, but someone like Christopher Atkins is in his forties yet still has the "Blue Lagoon" good looks and physique that catapulted him to international stardom. For Gorman, the lean, sinewy man is the epitome of everything that makes the male specimen simply irresistible. By his own admission, Greg Gorman considers this to be his best collection thus far. An absolute "must-have" title for Greg Gorman collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the 7 X 9 inch original photographic print that comes with it. The latter is very boldly and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Greg Gorman. The beautifully toned print of the model/actor Ned Brower is often framed and sold separately from the book for the same price as (or even more than) the Deluxe Edition itself. Please note: Greg Gorman signed the print, NOT the book, as is the custom with the publisher. This title is a contemporary erotic art photography classic. This is the one of very few copies of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 212 tritone plates, 1 original print. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GREG GORMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1576870871.

        Angels & Demons

New York: Pocket Books(2000). Stated 1st hardcover printing with full number line, printed in May, 2000. Meets all 5 first edition/1st printing points, it has no remainder mark, and it is a Review Copy with the 'coming May 2000 Simon & Schuster/Po cket Books' advertising cardboard tag laid in. SIGNED by the author on the title page. The book is fine: straight, very clean including its page edges, tightly bound, and it has no previous owner marks. The spine ends have a bit of shelving softening to spine cloth and, to be 'really' picky about describing, when the book was put together at the printer's, they left a very narrow soft 1-3/4" 'wrinkle' in the middle of the lower portion of the pastedown paper where it wasn't glued down flat to the back of the front board - varies in width from 1/16" to about 1/8" wide. There's nothing wrong with the pastedown paper or the front board; appears the glue just didn't get spread evenly enough. The dustjacket is Fine - price intact, clean, crisp and unfaded with no faults. The first Robert Langdon mystery and the author's 2nd book. The Illuminatti is involved in a battle between science and religion.A much smaller printing than The Da Vinci Code as Dan Brown wasn't yet a well-known author so scarce signed 'and' without a remainder mark.Basis for the 2009 movie of the same name. ; 9-1/2" x 6-1/4"; 430 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 22, 20, F/F

        Boogie-woogie: The Signed Limited Edition

London, England: Duckworth Literary Entertainment(2000). First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 254 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel/collaborative effort with Damien Hirst. Now considered a contemporary art and literary classic. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. Published as a hardcover original in the United Kingdom only. There is no American Edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. One of the most stunningly beautiful books ever published: Regular-sized volume format. Red cloth boards with gilt titles on spine, as issued. Text by Danny Moynihan. Original art by Damien Hirst. Hirst's art is in the form of the wraparound DJ cover, a hectic collage that consists of and alludes to the art of various contemporary artists. He gives credit to all of them: Sarah Lucas, Marc Quinn, Jeff Koons, Michael Joo, Matthew Collishaw, and himself. With Damien Hirst's supervision, one of his most fully realized (and financially accessible) creations underwent two further transformations: The photograph of Hirst's original art was taken by Mike Parsons while the subsequent digital manipulation was done by Steve Warner. Both the title and the art are an unmistakable homage to Piet Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie-Woogie". Red satin ribbon marker. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Danny Moynihan's and Damien Hirst's "Boogie-Woogie". The book-as-beautiful object because of its DJ design. The main attraction of the Limited Edition is Damien Hirst's DJ art. Discovered by Charles Saatchi (who bought his entire debut exhibition), Damien Hirst is not only the contemporary British art world's answer to Andy Warhol, he is our Warhol, the most famous (and sometimes, most expensive living) artist of our time. Moynihan holds his own: "Sharp and wickedly sexy, 'Boogie-Woogie' is the look at the contemporary art world we've all been waiting for. It will be required reading in twenty years. In the meantime, read it and laugh. Satire doesn't come any more brilliant than this" (Cressida Connolly). No, it doesn't, and the duo deserves our lasting gratitude for bursting the bubble of the New York art scene's powers-that-be. The late Ingrid Sischy once remarked that "book people do not understand art people". Alas, they do. The book-as-ultimate collectible. An absolute "must-have" title for Damien Hirst and Danny Moynihan collectors. This copy is one of the Signed Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black pen by Danny Moynihan. He also crossed out his printed name. The "Limited Edition" Duck Seal is stamped directly on the page itself, not a tipped-in page. In addition, the Limited Edition is spectacularly signed in black pen on the DJ itself by Damien Hirst, thereby turning it into an original art piece. London galleries frame and sell the DJ by itself as a Damien Hirst work of art (because it is). This title is a contemporary Artist Book classic. This is one of very few copies of the Signed Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Two of the most brilliant artists of our time. A flawless collectible copy. . ISBN 0715630210.

        Tulsa

New York City, NY: Grove Press(2000). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. New Edition of the photographer's masterpiece. One of the most important photography books of the 20th century. Limited Slipcased Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the Grove Press regular trade editions that were published simultaneously with it. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Grove Press: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs and Captions by Larry Clark. Original 10 X 8 inch photographic print laid-in. Matching black cloth slipcase. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents, in a Limited Edition format, Larry Clark's "Tulsa". Images of heroin addicts "shooting up" in a photobook that visually narrates, and as such, is perfect. Almost fifty years later, in our jaded time, they have lost none of their power to shock and disturb, and remain Clark's best work. The knowledge that nearly everyone in the book is dead (and they were all very young), with the notable exception of Larry Clark himself (who has said he may as well be dead, too), is heart-breaking. "Tulsa" 's influence has been immense: A ground-breaking book like Nan Goldin's "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" (1986) owes itself to "Tulsa", particularly the way Larry Clark captures a way of life that is anti-American in the deepest sense: A personal (therefore radical rather than merely political) rejection of the myth called the American Dream. "Once the needle goes in, it never comes out" (Larry Clark). An absolute "must-have" title for Larry Clark collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Larry Clark. Laid-in is an original 10 X 8 inch photographic print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of "Tulsa" available online command thousands of dollars even if they have major flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates, 1 original print. Larry Clark's "Tulsa" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Both "Tulsa" and "Teenage Lust" were selected as two of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the most influential photographers of our time.         Anjos Proibidos ("forbidden Angels")

New York City, NY: Ophelia Editions(2000). First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 72 pages. Revised And Expanded Edition of the photographer's collection of female nudes. One of the most beautiful and most controversial erotic art photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Alaistair Johnson: Oversize-volume format. Hard boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Fabio Cabral. Introduction by Lawrence A. Stanley. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Fabio Cabral's "Anjos Proibidos". The Forbidden Fruit as it were. "The angels in these photographs are so-called because they do not appear to be of this world, the adult world, in which they have been captured. Instead they inhabit a realm of sensuality that is still in the process of becoming. They are forbidden because, having been fleetingly captured, they must be freed again to return to that realm to which they belong" (Publisher's blurb). Cabral paid dearly for wanting to capture his otherworldly angels, however fleetingly, on film. In Brazil, his book was burned, the negatives confiscated and damaged, his studio shut down, and he and his gallery sued by the Government. After winning his case, he had problems all over again with the American publication, this time for arbitrary reasons (one of the models, back to earth and now full-grown, felt her privacy was violated). Hauled back into court, Cabral ultimately prevailed. By then, the damage, which was the authorities' sole intention, had been done, effectively rendering his book unavailable to the mass market. As such, it is, of course, the quintessential collector's item. Anyone who has seen Bruce Weber's "O Rio De Janeiro" or Mario Testino's "Any Objections?", to mention only two titles in what is now a crowded library on Beautiful Brazil, will surely find all this amusing. The late great fashion designer Gianni Versace considered the Brazilians as the world's most beautiful people (so does All-American hero Tom Brady, who married the Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, a fixture on the international fashion scene since she was a teenager). Since Versace was from Italy, where the idea and actual presence of youthful beauty have been celebrated and depicted since the Renaissance, his judgment was provocative and controversial in a different way. Cabral's problems did not stem from the fact that Brazil is Roman Catholic and has had a long history of authoritarian rule. It is because compared to Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, and Gianni Versace, he is almost completely unknown, with no socially prominent supporters, and even less money. The Brazilian Edition contained 24 images. The Complete Series, which includes another 27 plates, is presented in this edition only. An absolute "must-have" title for erotic art photography collectors. This title is a contemporary erotic art photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Almost all other copies available online have major flaws because they have been pored over repeatedly. A rare copy thus. 51 duotone plates. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 1888425172.
