Bluebuck Hippotragus leucophaeus. Original artwork from A Gap in Nature.

2000. 2000 - Acrylic on canvas, 1750 x 2000mm, framed, signed and dated by artist. Last Record: 1799-1800. Distribution: South-western South Africa. The bluebuck or blue antelope was a relative of the roan and sable antelopes, but was a little smaller than both. It was probably a selective feeder, preferring high-quality grasses. Fossils indicate that it was more widespread during the last ice age than when first encountered by Europeans in the seventeenth century. It was then restricted to the extreme southern coastal portion of South Africa, and even very early observers report that it was uncommon. It may have been affected by competition from domestic sheep, which reached South Africa around AD 400 after being traded with tribes from the north. Following European settlement its decline became terminal, for despite the fact that its flesh was distasteful it was hunted avidly, and eventually much of its habitat was con-verted to agriculture. By around 1800 there were none left. Today just four mounted specimens survive in museums in Vienna, Stockholm, Paris and Leiden, along with some bones and horn sets in other places. All of these museum specimens are now more than two hundred years old, and none shows any trace of the blue colour the creature was reported to possess, and that its common name suggests. Truly blue fur does not occur in mammals, and the bluebuck may have derived its bluish tinge from a mixture of black and yellow hairs. These are the tones Peter Schouten has used in this painting to give a sense of our understanding of the original colouration of this noble animal. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Lover Beloved (From the Masnavi) Translated by Zahra Partovi with Etchings by T. Kurahara.

Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 2000 - Artist's book, signed, limited edition, one of 50 copies, all on Apta Verge Royal paper by Richard de Bas, hand-numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, T. Kurahara and the translator, Zahra Partovi. Page size: 9- 1/2 inches x 6-1/2 inches; 27pp; + colophon, with four separate suites of etchings by T. Kurahara, each measuring 9-1/2 inches x 38 inches when unfolded (6 folded leaves). Each of the four suites is on paper etched on the reverse - one in gold, one in deep brown, one in lighter brown, and one in brick. These are laid into the bottom of the custom-made blue cloth clamshell box each of the inner trays lined with color-field etch in gold with brick line on brown and reddish-brown with brick line on red. The blue cloth over boards clamshell box is lettered in palladium gilt on the spine with the title. The book is bound in blue cloth by Zahra Partovi. The binding is a long stitch technique using only one piece of thread - a periwinkle blue, visible on the spine in five different lengths on top and bottom with title stamped in palladium gilt on front panel. There are four original etchings in the bound book as well as the suite. Again, these are color field etchings and the artists has interpreted this part of the MASNOVI by the times of day at which the tale is set: early morning, mid-day, dusk and evening with corresponding colors - moving from light pink to inky blue-lavenders. The text has been printed letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Aldus by Hermann Zapf in black and in light gray for the Persian calligraphy by Zahra Partovi (from polymer plates). The two color printing is a masterpiece in itself with the moving English translation by Ms. Partovi above and below each line of Persian in gray of Ms. Partovi's Persian calligraphy. The title page is printed in red and black with the blue thread exposed and knotted in the gutter of the title page. Jerry Kelly has accomplished the calligraphy on the title page. The etchings were editioned at D2 Press by the artist. The moving text cannot be summarized but must be experienced - preferably in the profoundly beautiful setting of this book. It is an aesthetic experience to savor. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Kimono (Limited Edition Portfolio of 3 Signed Prints)

New York: Limited Edition Club, 2000. Limited Edition . No Binding. Fine. This portfolio, also known as \"Tales of Shunkin Portfolio\", was released in 2000 by the Limited Edition Club, New York, as a separate portfolio of signed prints that appeared unsigned in their publication of the same year, \"Portrait of Shunkin\". The \"Kimono\" series was photographed by Eikoh Hosoe in 1963. There are very few photographs from this series that were ever released to the public. Although it is common now to see a very expressive woman wearing a kimono, back then there were numerous rules on posture and demeanor to be followed by women wearing a kimono. Models were treated as dress-up dolls. Hosoe decided to break the rules and focus on the mind-set of the woman rather than focusing on the kimono itself. There were a total of 6 photographs taken by Hosoe and this portfolio contains 3 of those photographs. They are: Kimono No. 2, 1963, The Night of a Newly Married Bride - Kimono No. 4, 1963, Hard Times of Marriage - Kimono No. 6, 1963, Widow in Mourning at the Funeral. The portfolio consists of these 3 hand-pulled photogravures on Rives BFK paper that were made by Jon Goodman from the original negatives. Each print is signed and numbered 14 of 62 by Eikoh Hosoe in pencil below the image. The images measure approximately 9 x 5.5 inches on paper that measures 15 x 11.5 inches and are loose as issued in the original publisher\'s silk box. Each print is suitable for framing. The photographs are in FINE condition. The silk box is in Near FINE condition with a rub to the top right corner.

On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection

London: John Murray. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Rare fifth edition, tenth thousand of Darwin's great book, one of only 2000 copies, published by John Murray of London in 1869. 596 pages, no advertisements to rear. Size; 20 x 14 cms (8" x 5.5"). Weight; 835g (1 pound 13 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate this as very good. The original green cloth covers, with gilt titling to the spine, are cleaner and sounder than often found with slight wear to the corners and darkening to the spine (see photo). The binding is tight and strong having probably been rebacked at some time. The text and pull out diagram are clean and bright and free from foxing. The trimming of a few bottom edges is a little irregular, an original printing/binding error. There is a stylishly penned 1869 owner's inscription on the half-title page, that of H G Dakyns, emminent British translator of Ancient Greek texts and friend of Tennyson. This is altogether a very handsome and desirable early printing of the 'most important biological book ever written' (Freeman). THE BOOK: 'can we doubt ... that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind?' In the Origin of Species, Darwin challenged many of the most deeply held beliefs of the Western world. His insistence on the immense length of the past and on the abundance of life-forms, present and extinct, dislodged man from his central position in creation and called into question the role of the Creator. He showed that new species are achieved by natural selection, and that absence of plan is an inherent part of the evolutionary process. Darwin's prodigious reading, experimentation, and observations on his travels fed into his great work, which draws on material from the Galapagos Islands to rural Staffordshire, from English back gardens to colonial encounters. N.B. It is in this edition that Darwin used the expression 'survival of the fittest', Herbert Spencer's term, for the first time. . Very Good. Original Cloth. 5th or later Edition. 1869. 20 x 14 (8" x 5.5").

The Captive Mind (Signed Limited Edition)

South Dennis, Massachusetts: 21st Editions , 2000. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. In 2000, fine press photography book publisher 21st Editions released The Journal of Contemporary Photography, Volume 3, The Captive Mind. The limitation of the publication was 750 signed and numbered copies with this being number 64. The book is devoted entirely to the lyrical work of John Dugdale. This master photographer\\\'s elegant male nudes and still lifes, printed in rich blue inks to match the original tones of his cyanotypes, are complemented by a short prayer for Dugdale by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler; a poem by prize-winning poet Morri Creech; and an essay by John Wood, the editor of 21ST. In addition to the signed limited edition, there was a Museum Edition of 50 copies with prints issued and a Deluxe Edition with a limitation of 100 copies. Measuring approximately 15.25 x 13.75 inches and containing 50 tritone photographs by John Dugdale, the book is bound in cloth covered boards with a tipped-in tritone plate by John Dugdale on the cover. The book is signed and dated by John Dugdale on the half-title page and the limitation number 64 of 750 appears on the limitation page in the back of the book. The book is in FINE condition. From the essay by John Wood: \\\"John Dugdale, like Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, offers what at first sight might seem to be, at least by today\\\'s standards of corporate morality, self-interest, and greed, a rather unrealistic portrait of the world, a vision of flowers, lovers, and places -- or the desire for them, coupled with metaphysical yearnings and questionings. Whether it is unrealistic or not, one does quickly see that it is a vision at odds with much of our world, at odds with life in our time. It\\\'s about beauty, which is radical in contemporary art; it\\\'s about love, which is radical and rare at any time; and it\\\'s about believing in the future even when it looks blindingly dark. To some it might even seem anachronistic, a remnant of New England transcendentalism and the ideas of Emerson, Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott and those who saw the boundary between natural and supernatural illusory, saw God and Nature fused, and saw the true self as a spiritual essence.

[incipit: ABC. . .].[The Netherlands or England?, ca. 1790?]. With oak backing (1.5×16×9 cm including the handle, face alone 11×9 cm), an italic capital alphabet (omitting J but with W and both U and V), italic lowercase vowels and a stylized flower, all printed from a woodblock(?) on laid paper (9×7 cm), mounted under a horn plate fastened by lead-strips with iron nails.

Cf. Christie's London, 6 June 2000, lot 23, from the collection of William Foyle, lower left in illustration (horn-book with very similar alphabet leaf); no similar example in Tuer. A late 18th-century horn-book, probably made in the Netherlands or England, in the late 18th century. The only similar example we know was in the collection of William Foyle (1885-1963), described (incorrectly?) as having a manuscript alphabet leaf, and with no date proposed. It was not printed from the same block as the present example, but the lay-out and style of the lettering is nearly identical. The brown colouring of the letters and the yellow colouring of the paper is caused by the old varnish protecting the horn-plate. Original horn-books are extremely rare and much sought after, as no respectable collection of children's books can do without one. In very good condition, with a small hole drilled in the left side of the wooden backing and a few minor stains on the horn and paper. An 18th-century horn-book, remarkably well preserved.

Urban Dingo - The Art and Life of Lin Onus 1948-1996

Craftsman House, Brisbane 2000 - The dust jacket has a 1" ( 2.5 cm ) tear on the top edge of the front panel. Very slight bump to the top right hand corner of the front hardcover panel.from Aboriginal-Art dot de This is the first publication to explore the art and life of this remarkable contemporary Australian artist whose career has spanned the last three decades of the struggle for Indigenous rights in Australia. Lin Onus was a powerfully positive man, who was ahead of his time and who showed us through his art what it means to be Australian today.Lin Onus drew on his Aboriginal and Scottish ancestry to reconcile cultural difference both in terms of his own personal identity and in the broader cross-cultural and political landscape. This he did by engaging in an often deceptively light-hearted dialogue punctuated with wit and humour, creating a truly unique visual language that unsettles many of the conventional categories of western art discourse. As an artist and activist, Onus addressed the political and social concerns of his people and inserted Indigenous perspectives into the telling of Australian history. Described by curator Margie Neale as 'a cultural terrorist of gentle irreverence', his engaging use of irony draws the viewer into a unique world of fact, fantasy and fiction, relying on inclusion rather than alienation for impact.Lin Onus forged a distinctive style, which combined imagery from traditional and contemporary Aboriginal sources and from western art. This richly illustrated monograph is published to coincide with a retrospective exhibition which brings together, for the first time, a significant body of his work, comprising fifty-eight paintings, prints and sculptures drawn from thirty-one private, public and corporate collections. It also includes previously unpublished photographs from the Onus family albums that reveal the interdependence of a Koori artist's personal, political and artistic lives.Table of ContentsMatt Foley: Foreword -8-Doug Hall: Preface -9-Margo Neale: Urban dingo -11-Sylvia Kleinert: Rear-vision mirror: A Koori context -25-Gary Foley with assistance from Bruce McGuinness: Lin Onus: A personal/political memory -33-Ian McLean: One mob, one voice, one land: Lin Onus and Indigenous postmodernism -41-Bernhard Lüthi: Translating cultures: Lin Onus, a man of many ways -49-Michael Eather: 'Under the influence': The collaborative world of Lin Onus -55-The Plates -61-Jo Onus and Tiriki Onus: Chronology -113-Exhibition history and arts-related activitites -130-Selected bibliography -134-Catalogue of works -136-Glossary and abbreviations -139-Notes on the authors -140-Acknowledgments -141-Index -142- and from Whitehat dot com dot auLin OnusArtist1948-1996Lin Onus was an artist with deeply held socio-political views. More unusually among such artists, he also possessed humour and a technical expertise in his art. These later elements have sometimes made him unfashionable among those lacking those qualities.Lin Onus was the son of an Aboriginal father and a Scottish mother and grew up in Melbourne.By the time Lin Onus came to painting in his twenties, he had already worked in a large range of jobs which had given him a number of technical skills. These skills are often evident in his sculptures. He became proficient in a western realist style of painting that was far removed from traditional aboriginal art. However, as he studied traditional art he was able to meld the two styles in a way that is uniquely his own, and which helped establish an urban aboriginal art movement. Particularly important in his development was his visits to Garmedi (Arnhem Land) starting in 1986. Jack Wunuwun, the Yolngu artist, introduced him into the Murrungun-Djinang clan and gave him permission to use some of traditional images in his paintings. Lin's father had been of the Yorta Yorta people from the Barmah Forest country, and Lin also used images from this area in his paintings. Some of Onus' early works directly convey the anger he felt at social [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
