Sämtliche Werke. Frankfurter Ausgabe. Historisch-Kritische Ausgabe

Sattler herausgegebenen historisch-kritischen Frankfurter Hölderlin-Ausgabe (FHA). The publisher of this edition persuaded the current owners of about 80 of the scrolls reproduced in black & white in 1949 to supply color transparencies so that SDI Publications was able to print 115 of the scrolls in full color in this edition. One wonders why the Museo dell 'Arte Orientale in Rome, which owned about 90 of the scrolls, appears not to have furnished color transparencies for this edition since the color adds an important dimension to the scolls. SDI Publications bound the plate volume (rather than leaving the plates unbound as in the 1949 edition) and separated the color and monchrome illustrations so the plates do not run in a single numbered sequence.

The Collected Works of James M. Buchanan [20 Volume Set]

Liberty Fund. Hardcover. B007BNXUA6 1999-2002 signed and inscribed presentation set, first edition, Liberty Fund, Inc. (Indianapolis, Indiana), twenty 6 1/8 x 9 1/4 inches tall powder blue and black cloth hardbound volumes, no dust jackets (as issued), silver lettering to spines, all page edges light blue, ribbon marker sewn in, pattern endpapers, frontispiece photograph to each volume, xxiv, 522, xxi, 169, xx, 356, xvi, 310, xv, 202, xvii, 96, xvii, 242, xxi, 201, xxiv, 254, xxi, 171, xxiv, 216, xii, 502, xiii, 497, xvi, 549, xviii, 502, xiii, 473, xxi, 480, xvii, 461, xviii, 377, 220 pp. (ttl. 7,148 pages). Eighteen of the twenty volumes are warmly inscribed in the year of issue by the author to his assistant of 46 years, Betty H. Tillman (1928 - 2016), the second person Buchanan phoned on October 16, 1986 (after his wife, Ann) when he learned he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (see Buchanan, 'Notes on Nobelity,' in Better than Plowing: And Other Personal Essays, University of Chicago Press 1992). Only Volumes 11 and 20 are unsigned; the others have personal inscriptions and Buchanan's signature to the frontispiece page, title page or half title. Most of the volumes are in very good to near fine condition - clean, bright and unmarked - but a few have a bit of rubbing or edgewear to the covers, and the spine is very slightly cocked on Volume 1. Only two volumes, 3 and 15, have significant condition issues: water damage, especially severe with Volume 15. Volume 3 has dampstaining to both the front and rear boards, with slight upper marginal blue staining through the preface of the volume and very subtle rolling / waviness to the pages of the preface. With Volume 15, three-fourths of the rear board is dampstained and the board is somewhat warped, with some light staining and waviness to the upper portion of the pages in the last half of the volume. All other issues are quite minor: Volumes 6-7 have minor staining/rubbing to boards and Volume 12 has a bit of very minor bumping to the top edge of the front board. Altogether, an outstanding set, with 18 personally inscribed and signed by Buchanan, who appears to have signed very few copies of any of his voluminous works over the years. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~RCL~ Contents: v. 1. Ideas, persons, and events; v. 20. Indexes. James McGill Buchanan, Jr. (1919 - 2013) was an American economist known for his work on public choice theory (included in his most famous work, The Calculus of Consent), for which he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in 1986. Buchanan's work initiated research on how politicians' and bureaucrats' self-interest, utility maximization and other non-wealth maximizing considerations affect their decision making. He was a member of the Board of Advisors of The Independent Institute, a member (and for a time the President) of the Mont Pelerin Society, a Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Cato Institute, and professor at George Mason University. Buchanan's work focused on public finance, the public debt, voting, rigorous analysis of the theory of logrolling, macroeconomics, constitutional economics, and libertarian theory. On his death (in January 2013 at age 93 in Blacksburg, Virginia), the New York Times commented that the Nobel Prize-winning economist who championed public choice theory influenced a 'generation of conservative thinking about deficits, taxes and the size of government.' The Badische Zeitung called Buchanan, who showed how politicians undermine fair and simple tax systems, the 'founder of the New Political Economy.' . Good. First Edition.

Peter Beard: Fifty Years of Portaits.

Sante Fe, NM: Arena Editions, 1999. First edition. Quarto, original leatherette cover. Elaborately signed and inscribed by Peter Beard, with his left hand imprint added. In fine condition. Also laid in are three postcards from Peter Beard. Introduction by David Fahey. Essay by Anthony Haden-Guest. In this book cataloguing 50 years of Peter Beard's photography, essayist Peter Tunney offers an interesting perspective on Beard's work: "Above all, Peter Beard is a collector, the camera only one method to his madness, a mere tool for accumulating his relished subject matter, the evidence of a life lived, all stuffed into a diary, or any book for that matter. Peter once remarked to me, 'I never save a book unless I have something glued in it.'" Beard's photos are collages of lists, of reference points; when he shows in a gallery, he insists that a mixed tape of music is played to amplify and add a layer of sound to his pictures. The texture in his photo collages is rich, and the layers are thick. The elements he employs create a whole vision of his work: Africa, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, the Kennedys, elephants, Montauk, Mick Jagger, blood, crocodiles, things cut out of their context and put in new ones--the picture begins to form. Fifty years' worth of work is collected in this book, expressed in faces readers may recognize and some they won't; his adventures; and his years at Hog Ranch in Africa. Somehow these diverse points of reference come together in their differences and illustrate completely Peter Beard's fascinating work and life.
