Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Uncorrected Proof Copy.

London: Bloomsbury,, 1999. Octavo. Original green and white wrappers printed in black. Front cover marked, light creasing to pages. A very good copy. Uncorrected proof copy, second state. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page: Rowling has circled the provisional dedication statement with an arrow to the inscription "to Louise, one of the privileged few (to have one of these!) J. K. Rowling". For the Prisoner of Azkaban, two proof copies were issued, with the text in different states: the first was issued in purple wrappers, and the second, with editorial work undertaken on the text throughout, in green wrappers, as here. Bloomsbury's records state 150 copies of each were issued, although the green proof is scarcer in commerce. Bloomsbury only issued proof copies for the first three Harry Potter novels: after the Prisoner of Azkaban, sales were so great that they did not want to give subsequent story lines away until publication day.

        Isolated Heroes (sealed copy)

Raf Simons, Antwerp 1999 - 4t0, Unpaginated (ca 42pp). Printed boards as issued. Numerous Colour plates. Still sealed in publishers wraps. Peter de Potter writes: "The series of photographs, collected under the banner 'Isolated Heroes', are the result of the collaboration British photographer David Sims and Belgian menswear designer Raf Simons undertook in the summer of 1999. Featured on the pictures are Raf Simons' models, dressed in his collection for Spring-Summer 2000. Each boy is credited with a serial number and his own first name. 'Isolated Heroes' contains both black and white and colour photographs. This collaboration was not a chance meeting. Both Sims and Simons had been outspoken about their mutual admiration, mostly in press interviews. Although the interest in each other's work developed into a firm friendship, they only decided to work together in the wake of Simons' Spring-Summer 2000-collection. Originally intented as a work-in-progress, Sims' photographs of Simons' models soon became a body of work in it's own right. The photographs of 'Isolated Heroes' were never intended for mere promotional purposes. They even transcend more traditional fashion photography, as they reach for a timeless quality, devoid of signs of the times or traces of trendiness. The pictures encapsulate both Sims' and Simons' vision with clarity and precision. The 'Isolated Heroes'-project deals with beauty, youth, masculinity and the perfect isolation of all these preoccupations." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Children's Crusade (No. 23 of the Deluxe Edition)

Enitharmon Press, London 1999 - Number 23 of 75 copies of the deluxe edition, folio size, [46] pp., signed by Blake Morrison and Paula Rego. Paula Rego (b. 1935), a native of Portugal, studied art at the Slade School, London, where she now mainly lives and works. This work is based, almost unbelievably so, on factual history: "the Children's Crusade of 1212 remains an enigmatic historical episode, recorded in only a few contemporary accounts, but it captured the imagination of the acclaimed painter Paula Rego as a story steeped in imaginative possibilities and contemporary relevance. It touches not only on children's love of adventure but also on darker issues including fears of the unknown, incipient sexuality and exploitation. In his introduction, Blake Morrison brilliantly illuminates Rego's twelve hand-coloured etchings and their relation to the crusade, and the scene is set by two passages from medieval chronicles. The book concludes with an extensive and revealing interview with Paula Rego, in which she explains her fascination with the subject." (N.B., from the website of the publisher.) ***DESCRIPTION: Original gray linen covered boards with the illustration "Voices (II)" inlaid to the upper board, fore- and tail-edges uncut, color printed reproductions of the original etchings tipped in; text has been hand-set in Monotype Caslon, printed on Arches Vélin paper, folio size (12.75" by 10"), pagination: [1-6] 7-45 [1 colophon], limited edition, this number 23 of 75 copies of the deluxe edition (total edition 190), signed by Blake Morrison and Paula Rego. Rego's signed original etching "Bait," is laid loose into a wallet in the slipcase; the etching has been printed on 300 gsm Somerset Velvet; the book and the etching are housed in a matching gray linen slipcase with a printed label inlaid to the upper board. ***CONDITION: A fine copy; crisp, clean, like new; no prior owner markings, the separate etching also fine, absolutely clean and without wear; the slipcase is fine overall, strong and sturdy, the cloth is unrubbed with no frayed edges; a few minor, stray spots of faint foxing to the case, else fine. ***CITATION: Rosenthal, "Paula Rego the Complete Graphic Work", pp. 130-145. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. Band II: Bedingungen, Anlage, gärtnerische Umgebung, Aufbau und gesundheitliche Einrichtungen des englischen Hauses. Band III: Der Innenraum des englischen Hauses [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hermann Muthesius (Autor) Vorwort Henning Bock Reihe/Serie Architektura Universalis 3 BÄNDE

Mann (Gebr.), Berlin, 1999. Writing on the Body; Degas's Words about Drawing the Figure

San Francisco: Pacific Editions, printed at The Greenwood Press, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hobson, Charles. Number 35 of 45 copies, quarto size, [19] pp., signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) has long been considered one of the greatest of the French impressionists, especially concerning the female body in movement which is given a masterful homage in this intriguing volume. Degas did many monotypes "and in many cases he applied pastel over the ghost version to create a finished piece." Charles Hobson's own masterful pastel and photogravures of the female nude, having a self-proclaimed "lifelong influence" by Degas, are given a loving home beside Degas' words. The text was selected from letters and other material, his words are not only printed typographically on pages facing the plates but overlaid in Degas' actual handwriting to the copper images created by Hobson.***DESCRIPTION: Original quarter rust-red cloth with Degas' handwriting in facsimile to the cloth in black, hand painted paper covered boards illustrated with a reproduction of a Degas drawing, all edges uncut, concertina binding, eight photogravures; BFK Rives paper, Meridien type, quarto size (11.5" by 7.75"), unpaginated [19] pp., limited edition of 45 copies, this number 35, signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase decorated with facsimiles of Degas' writing, a nib pen imprinted with the title is attached to the backstrip.***CONDITION: Fine copy, like new, in fine slipcase.***CITATION: Experiments in Navigation, pp. 30-33.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
