The Theory of Money and Financial Institutions.

MIT Press, Cambridge, MA 1999 - First editions of Shubik's work regarding the theory of money. Octavo, 2 volumes. Both volumes are inscribed by Martin Shubik to Benoit Mandelbrot. Volume one is signed, "To Benoit and Aliette To old friends with best wishes Martin S. June 7, 2000. P.S. You made an error. You were going to get a free copy- if need you can assign it." Volume 2 is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Benoit and Aliette To old friends with best wishes Martin Shubik June 7, 2000." Mandelbrot writes, "The indispensable intermediary who started the process that led me to Yale was a self-described 'institutional economist' Martin Shubik. We had met while I was John Von Neumann's postdoc at the Institute For Advanced Study and he was at Princeton University with Oskar Morgenstern, Johnny's co-author of the book Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. For a short period in the sixties, we were colleagues at IBM research, but he soon left for Yale. Out of the blue, Shubik called me when I was in transit to Harvard in 1964 and again early in 1967. The first time, I must have rebuffed him. The second time I must have sounded more open. Shortly afterward, a call from the mathematics chairman, Ronald Raphael Coifman" (The Fractalist pp. 279-80). Both volumes are fine in near fine dust jackets with light shelf wear. A nice association. "Mathematical institutional economics"--a term Martin Shubik coined in 1959 to describe the theoretical underpinnings needed for the construction of an economic dynamics. The goal is to develop a process-oriented theory of money and financial institutions that reconciles micro- and macroeconomics, using as a prime tool the theory of games in strategic and extensive form. The approach involves a search for minimal financial institutions that appear as a logical, technological, and institutional necessity, as part of the "rules of the game." Money and financial institutions are assumed to be the basic elements of the network that transmits the sociopolitical imperatives to the economy. Volume 1 deals with a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. Volume 2 explores the new economic features that arise when we consider multi-period finite and infinite horizon economies. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Silver Gelatin Photographs Signed

Richard Corman, New York 1999 - RICHARD CORMAN'S ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF MUHAMMAD ALI: THE ONLY SET SIGNED BY ALI. Each of the three 11x14 inch silver prints is signed by Ali in silver marker on the front of the image; each image is also signed by Corman on the verso and marked "1 of 1". The Ali signatures are particularly strong and bold. Trained under Richard Avedon, Richard Corman has been one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the last thirty years. Rolling Stone refers to his photographs as "iconic" and documentarian Ken Burns says Corman's versatile body of work is an "artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor. the photographs record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us." Although he has met and photographed countless inspiring athletes, politicians, and cultural figures, Corman fondly remembers his photoshoot with Ali as a milestone in his career. As he explains: These images shot in 1998 in NYC on the lower westside in many ways was the culmination of my career up to that point and still remains one of the highlights of a very fortunate career. I was awestruck when he agreed to fly to New York to pose for the cover of my first book? it still blows my mind and was so flattering. He was fighting Parkinson's, but never let that disease stop his bold character. You see Ali was my hero on so many levels: great humanitarian, genius athlete, incredible sense of humor, beyond courageous, and a dignity I had never in my lifetime witnessed before. He had principle and strength that so many looked up to? rich, poor, black or white. He moved so many of us. He lived up to every preconceived notion I had of him during our short time together in my studio. However it was his humility and generosity that was so prevalent and set the stage for a shoot that was honest, truthful and so memorable. I still get chills when I see his signature on these three photographs. The Ali photos have been widely reproduced and are perhaps the most recognizable images of Ali later in life. They were featured in Time Magazine and one of the images served as the cover of Corman's first book Glory. New York: Richard Corman, 1998-1999. Three 11x14 inch silver gelatin prints.         The New Lieutenant's Rap (Designer Proof #4 / 24)

Philtrum Press 1999 - Bangor, ME: Philtrum Press (1999). The New Lieutenant's Rap by Stephen King. Soft cover. pp. 24. First Edition. Rare Designer's Proof (#4/24) Signed By Michael Alpert. One Of Stephen King's Most Elusive Books. Chapbook Condition: Fine. History: In October 1998, Stephen King asked Michael Alpert to produce The New Lieutenant's Rap. The book was wanted for the April 6, 1999 Anniversary Celebration of Stephen's 25th year a a published novelist. After receiving Stephen's story, Michael worked on the book during the next five months, finishing it in time for Stephen's New York extravaganza at The Tavern On The Green in Central Park. As is often the case with Philtrum Press books, Stephen asked him to use innovative book-design ideas similar to The Plant and The Eyes Of The Dragon in previous years. For this book, Michael incorporated Stephen's hand-printed text within the long tradition of fine bookbinding. The New Lieutenant's Rap was printed on beautifully crafted German all-rag paper, and was sewn with green Irish linen thread. After printing, sewing, and numbering the edition for the Carrie party, Michael discovered that he had on hand 24 designer's proof copies that were used at various stages as guides for the final numbered and signed edition. These working copies are out-of-series (ie: not numbered) and are not meant for Stephen's signature. An explanatory sheet accompanies each of the 24 proofs. A typically exhaustive and definitive production by Thrower, covering every imaginable aspect of the great director's canon. Along with Mario Bava and Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci is considered one of the fathers of the "giallo" style of filmmaking, beginning with Westerns and thrillers in the late 1960s, followed by a determined detour into horror in the mid-1970s.         Dig & Delve WITH: Prospectus

New York: Granary Books, 1999. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. Trevor Winkfield. Printed by master printer Ruth Lingen. Her copy, number 55/67. Signed on the colophon by the author and illustrator.Described by its publisher as a postmodern illustrated book a perfect passport to the new millenium, Dig & Delve is a collaboration between American poet Larry Fagin (text) and English writer and artist Trevor Winkfield (images and designs).Peter Schjeldahl notes that Fagin explores the possibilities of poetry as an activity, like the theater or a sport, where each act is a unique performance demanding nerve and guile. The poems that result are as lean and snappy as terriers, and just as much fun. Fagins surreal, Rimbaud-like prose poem is delightfully and joyously augmented by Winkfields clean, spare artwork, with the finished product mimicking a bright childrens board book. The book was typeset largely by Ruth Lingen with assistance from Barbara Henry; it was letterpress printed, including the cloth cover, by Lingen. This volume is notable for its superior printing, including the crispness and purity of the books vibrant colors. When will the book be done, 82-83.Of an edition of 67 copies signed by both author and artist, 50 were for sale and 17 were hors commerce. Bound dos rapporté by Judith Ivry with hand-printed cloth over boards. 18 pp. 26.4cm x 22cm.

Paris, 1786. Small 8vo. Calligraphic manuscript written in French in dark brown ink on paper, in a formal Latin script hand (a French-style "batard"), with an ornamental, calligraphic title-page in reddish brown, green, dark brown and black ink, each page in a thick-thin-thin border with circular decorations in each corner and centred at the head, running heads in the border, the heading of the "Avertissement" in a decorative script, and calligraphic chapter headings in circular or rectangular decorations and sub-headings in decorated horizontal bands. Contemporary red, gold-tooled morocco, the smooth spine divided into 6 panels (separated by lines flanked by dotted lines), the 2nd with a dark green title-label, each of the others with an 8-petalled flower, 10 dots, a decoration in each corner and another at each side, and a decorated band at the foot; each board with a border of thin-thick-thin fillets with a decoration stamped on each corner and a 6-petalled flower inside each corner; gold-tooled turn-ins, gold fillets on the board edges (altogether about 130 impressions of 13 tools), gilt edges.

For Choiseul-Gouffier: S.H. Allen, Finding the walls of Troy (1999), pp. 41-44; A.F. Spada, Ephémérides Russes ..., vol. 2 (1816), pp. 221-222. Beautiful calligraphic manuscript by Claude Remy, writing master and tutor of the children of the Paris beau monde for more than a decade before the French Revolution. The author-calligrapher notes in an epilogue that he had executed more than 60 similar instructive manuscripts, not only for his pupils but also for their parents, who greatly valued them, but few have survived. Remy executed it for and presented to Raoul de Choiseul-Gouffier, the young son of Gabriel Auguste, Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier (1752-1817), author of Voyage pittoresque en Grèce, who served as French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 to the French Revolution, then fled to Russia in 1793 where he served Catharine the Great and her successors as Imperial Librarian and director of the Imperial Academy of Arts at Saint Petersburg. He returned to France in 1802, when the Treaty of Amiens brought temporary peace. Raoul became head of the Russian branch of the Knights of Malta and appears to have succeeded his father as count in 1817.Remy's "avertissement" notes that he taught not only writing, but also reading, arithmetic, Latin, geography and several other subjects, but that he especially loved to teach the science of the four elements, the principal subject of the present manuscript. It clearly and methodically presents the traditional scientific ideas about air, fire, water and earth, including chapters on the properties of the elements, wind, hurricanes, the moon, the sun, heat, clouds, different climates, the tropics, the continents, the poles, oceans, bays, islands, rivers, floods, eclipses, the products of the earth, bodies, blood, senses, spirit, perspective and geography, even straying to topics such as the church, nobility, government, finances, commerce, artisans, wealth, poverty, education and the existence of God. The 6-page table of contents lists nearly a hundred topics covered. Two earlier Remy manuscripts of his Traité des quatre elémens are known, also executed for leading families in Paris. With armorial bookplate. An occasional very minor spot and very slight browning, but otherwise in fine condition. Binding very slightly worn at the extremities but otherwise also fine. A fine calligraphic manuscript executed for the young son of a French count and ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

First and only German edition of Griffith's account of his journey (leaving England in 1785) from Smyrna (Izmir) through the Dardanelles to Constantinople (Istanbul) and back by ship, then from Smyrna overland through Turkey and (after crossing the corner of the Mediterranean) from Antioch via Aleppo and by caravan across the desert in what is now Syria and Iraq to Basra. On his return trip by ship he visited Muscat, which he also describes. At Muscat he saw beautiful Indian girls performing a nautch dance, which initially disgusted him, though he notes that more intimate acquaintance with the music and dance turned him into a nautch admirer. The three maps show a detail of the Dardanelles, Asia minor, and the regions between the Mediterranean and the Gulf. With a contemporary black ink owner's stamp on first and last text page; arms on the binding of Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1795-1861), King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861; several stamps. Account of a 1780s journey through Turkey and the Middle East to the Gulf and back via Muscat.

        THE DWELLINGS OF THE PHILOSOPHERS

Boulder, 1999. First edition. Fine condition in very good dust jacket; Jacket has a few small scrapes to the fore-edge.. The true identity of the alchemical adept calling himself "Fulcanelli" has never been publicly discovered but there are few who would not recognize his works as the most significant contribution to the Great Art in more than 100 years. The author displays an immense knowledge of the practices of Alchemy and of the Alchemists of the Middle Ages. For for the first time he makes clear the differences between Chemistry, Spagyrics, Archemy, and Alchemy. For many, the most amazing revelation of the book will be the author's review and exhaustive interpretation of the extensive statuary, bas relief, and other artistic devices built into the homes of numerous Medieval Alchemists. These works of art for centuries have revealed openly the secrets of Alchemy to all who have the eyes to see. This long awaited, meticulously translated work from the original French will be of immense benefit to those who seek to understand Alchemy for what it truly is-the art and science of Creation and Transformation of physical form through the agency of Man. With thirty-nine illustrations by Julien Champagne; Translated by Brigitte Donvez and Lionel Perrin; Limited issue of 300 copies bound in leather, though low quality bonded leather, tan marbled end papers and red marking ribbon; 550 pages.

[Model book of Dutch tile designs].[Utrecht?, ca. 1810?]. Small square 4to (20 x 19 cm). With 111 pen and wash model drawings for Dutch tiles on the rectos of 105 leaves, most in greys but many in brown or a beautiful Delft blue. Several combine more than one colour, all in the actual size of tiles. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine.

Cf. Van Dam, "Vormen uit vuur", in: Mededel. blad Ned. Ver. van Vrienden van Ceramiek en Glas, (1999), nos. 3-4, pp. 27-31; Pluis, Dutch tile: designs and names, 1570-1930, passim; Pluis, Kinderspelen op tegels, p. 281. A manuscript model book of Dutch ceramic tile designs, a unique and important primary source for the early Utrecht tile art industry. No Utrecht modelbook is known before the printed ones at the end of the 19th century. Many designs in the book remained in use from the 17th to the late 19th century, so that they can be found in the later printed model books, but the styles changed with time and some subjects went in and out of fashion. The later 19th-century decorative designs are smoother and more mechanical than the more traditional designs in the present model book. Especially the picture tiles, which are most time-dependent and are mostly not recorded in Pluis, The Dutch tile, show their 17th-century inspiration, as well as the fashion of the late 18th century when Dutch tile art industry flourished and also worked for export. The landscapes are almost all set in an abundance of water with sailing ships, swimming ducks and sporting fishermen. The book also includes the traditional fully rigged sailing ships and a selection of traditional pictures of professions, children's games, a sea-creature, animals to hunt, a rider, a soldier, etc,. as well as biblical scenes set in various decorative borders.Extra added: 17 loose manuscript model designs (ca. 1825-1850) for tiles and a drawing of masons at work on a house, also intended as a tile design. Some presumably blank leaves have been cut out between leaf 102 and the final blanks, and leaves 103 to 105 are mounted on the stubs. In very good condition. Binding rubbed, cracked along the hinges and restored at the foot of the spine. Important and beautiful primary source for the history of Dutch tile designs.

[Schreibmusterbuch]. Nürnberg, 1555. 4to mostly in 8s (22 x 16.5 cm). Manuscript in brown, black, red and gold ink on paper, with 13 large interlaced gothic initials, many double-page openings with an alphabet on the left and a sample text in the same hand on the right. With the exemplars written in several different cursive semi-cursive and non-cursive hands, including German bastarda, fraktur and texura gothic hands, and sloped italic and upright roman Latin hands. Contemporary richly blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards by the Nürnberg bookbinder Hans Bopp, each board in a panel design with a roll (192 x 19 mm) with 4 biblical portraits above captions, traces of 2 pair of lost brass fastenings.

For Schleupner: Doede, Schreibmeisterbücher, p. 30, note 38; R. Gebhard, Rechenbücher und mathematische Texte der frühen Neuzeit (1999), pp. 79-80; Von Imhoff, ed., Berühmte Nürnberger aus neun Jahrhunderten, (1989), vol. 2, p. 120; for the binder: Haebler, Rollen- und Plattenstempel I, pp. 43-44 (Hans Bopp rolle 4). A spectacular writing master's manuscript copybook or exemplar book from the golden age of Nürnberg calligraphy and the only known writing book (manuscript or printed) by Caspar Schleupner (1535?-1599), a pupil of the great Johann Neudörffer the elder (1497-1563), who gave the fraktur its definitive form in both manuscripts and type. It is especially notable for the wide variety of hands, the large interlaced gothic initials and especially the use of metallic ink on 23 pages, sometimes only for the initials and sometimes for the entire text. These appear to be a gold alloy with an almost copper colour (they show no trace of oxidized copper). The interlaced initials do not appear in alphabetical order, but Schleupner did choose his texts to avoid repeating the same letter of the alphabet, so his copybook presents the most commonly used initial letters (ABDEFGILMNPSU). Other text samples include decorated initials in other styles. In general the German texts are rendered in gothic hands and the Latin texts in Latin hands, but one Latin text appears in a fine formal textura gothic. The binding roll with four portraits is probably the one Haebler records on a group of Nürnberg bindings from the years 1541-1566. The bindings in Haebler's group also include a roll with initials HB, so he attributes them to the Nürnberg binder Hans Bopp, who is documented in 1573. With an (pre-1800?) owner's inscription. With an occasional pen flourish slightly shaved and with six leaves removed (at least 5 probably blank or removed by Schleupner during production) and with an occasional minor smudge or marginal tear, but generally in good condition and only slightly trimmed. The binding is worn at the extremities, lacks its fastenings and shows a few small stains but is otherwise good, with the tooling clear. The only known writing master's copybook by one of Neudörffer's most important pupils, with 13 large interlaced initials and many pages in red and/or gold ink.
