GREG GORMAN: VOLUME II ("GREG GORMAN: VOLUME TWO")

Tokyo, Japan: Treville Company Limited, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Tokyo, Japan: Treville Company Limited, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. The photographer's second collection of celebrity portraits and male and female nudes. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the much more common Second Edition. Volume Two of the landmark two-volume set. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The edition is now rare. Each volume was published separately, ten years apart from each other, and by different publishers. The reason they nevertheless work perfectly together is that Greg Gorman maintained full creative control over the production of both. A stunningly beautiful production by Greg Gorman and Ulrik Neumann: Oversize-volume format. A tall and thick book. Photographs by Greg Gorman. There is minimal text. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper by Treville Company Limited Tokyo to the very highest standards. Gorman's dramatic use of lighting is reproduced in all its power and beauty as only a Japanese printing company can pull it off. In pictorial DJ, which utilizes a nude portrait of Iman in front and a male nude on the back, and white titles on the spine, as issued. Presents Greg Gorman's finest and most representative images in the two genres that he has excelled in and established himself: The celebrity portrait and the nude. Dramatically lit black-and-white, full-page photographs of celebrities are presented as spectacular, highly erotic nudes. Although it took a decade to get it published, the long wait was well worth it. Includes portraits of Rupert Everett (in his first and only full-frontal nude) , Tony Ward, Michael Dean, and Brigitte Nielsen, among so many others. In Volume One, there was a clear demarcation between the extreme closeup celebrity portraits (which showed the soulful beauty of the human face) and the suite of nudes (which showed Gorman's arresting sculptural approach to the nude) . In Volume Two, what is amazing is how Gorman managed effortlessly to persuade every single one of his male and female celebrities to shed their glamorous clothes and show off their smooth, silky, luminescent skin, the only clothing they really need, in daring, full-frontal poses. An accomplished Hollywood and lifestyle magazine photographer who has done commercial work for HBO, Columbia Pictures, Interview Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Playboy Magazine, LIFE, and Tatler, among others, Greg Gorman's true passions are the charismatic personality of the celebrity and the chiseled perfection of the human form, as only the (his) camera can capture. This follow-up collection offers definitive and ample proof of Greg Gorman's distinctive style and outstanding mastery of his chosen medium. A gorgeous "coffee-table" book, this is a "must-have" title for Greg Gorman collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Greg Gorman. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Gorman did not sign most copies and many copies available online have major flaws yet command up to $500. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GREG GORMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 4845707780.

A Series of Unfortunate Events Set: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window, The Miserable Mill, The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital,The Carnivorous Carnival, The Slippery Slope, The End

New York: Harper Trophy, 1999-2006. First editions, first printings of each of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. Small octavos, original illustrated boards. Each are signed, dated and embossed by Lemony Snicket. Each of the thirteen volumes are in fine condition. Also included is a signed first edition of "Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography". The A beautiful signed set. Critics have compared the Snicket oeuvre to Edward Gorey, the Brothers Grimm and Roald Dahl. They are melodramatic gothic-style cliffhangers, darkly lighthearted books with a contemporary sardonic wit… The inventive use of irony and language, including defining big words… shows that "kids have a nose for literature that is often underestimated" (New York Times).

THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM plus 'Magnets for Misfortune.'

New York: HarperCollins, (1999.) . Advance Reading Copy (trade paperback format. ) . Very near fine - a new and unread book, tight binding, no creases, but a little nick at the top of the spine and another at the upper corner (probably done in the publishing process, since these tiny nicks seem to be endemic to most otherwise fine copies). . An extremely uncommon ARC of the first two titles in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket - THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM, bound dos-a-dos, (back to back) in glossy illustrated wrappers. SIGNED (sort of) by the author, with an embossed seal and the trademark handwritten comment 'with all due respect' surrounding the seal, and the date '3.X.2004. written inside the seal. First issue, with the misspelling of 'unfortuante' on the covers. Now that this was the basis of a movie starring Jim Carey, Meryl Streep and Jude Law, even those of you who don't have children in your lives are probably familiar with these books, but for those who might still be languishing uninformed, here is a bit of information: The Lemony Snicket books are possibly even more popular than the Potter books - and for good reason! The resemblance to Edward Gorey's works is not accidental - How could anyone not love a book which contains this 'letter to the reader' at the beginning: 'I am sorry to say that the book which you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells the unhappy tale of three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book, when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune./ In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. / It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.' What adult would not enjoy the in-jokes of names like Sunny and Klaus (as in von Bulow) - or the fact that these books actually encourage children to learn from reading, as in this excerpt: 'But although Klaus had read books on outer-space exploration, ice-skating tricks, and good marriage methods, and not yet found much use for this information, he had learned a great deal of information that was about to become very useful indeed.' Or a beginning paragraph that includes a word like 'rife'? The vocabulary is wonderful in these books. As a well-publicized debut, this advance reading copy was presumably printed in relatively generous numbers - but very few are currently being offered for sale! Either all the booksellers who got copies of this are hoarding this treasure themselves or, horrors, actually GAVE them to children! However, not only are we willing to sell this ARC, we will even include the much more elusive ' Magnets for Misfortune' which was produced as part of this original publicity campaign (I have never seen any of these offered for sale). This is the first of the promotional magnet sets done by the publisher: it consists of a small sheet of words (5 3/4 by 4 inches, designed to be cut apart and use to create 'refrigerator poetry'' Still in the original sealed plastic bag with a slip announcing a poetry contest for children.

The Culinary Chronicle, Bd.3, The Best of New York & Paris [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Christine Messer Hausch (Autor), Bruno Hausch (Autor), Christine Messer Hausch (Autor), Chris Meier (Autor), Hans-Albert Stechl (Autor)

Hädecke, 1999. 1999. Hardcover. Good. 32 x 25,7 x 4,6 cm. Synopsis:The concept that "food is culture" is the basis for this pack, which aims to document the wealth of food culture from all over the world. The cuisine of Hong Kong is discussed in depth, then Morocco and its culinary delights is described, and lastly, the quality of London's food is appraised. The first of a proposed series, this volume examines the focal points of three totally heterogeneous locations. Hong Kong's cuisine is comprehensively described, from that of well-known international hotels to the best Chinese speciality restaurants. In contrast, the book turns to Morocco's southern region, describing the tranquillity of the country, the carefully-nurtured traditions, the light and colours and the arabesques of the architecture and design, all lending an atmosphere conducive to pleasure. Finally London's gastronomic scene is delineated. Having awoken from its long culinary torpor, the city is considered to have now taken its place in the avantgarde of food culture. Also included is a CD-ROM entitled "Wonders of Hong Kong".

"String theory extra dimensions have traditionally been considered to be small and unobservable. Randall and Sundrum introduced an alternative in these two papers in which one of the additional dimensions is ?warped.? In their approach, the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces are confined to three dimensions (on a 3-brane, a three-dimensional ?membrane,? at a specific location in the other dimensions), but gravity propagates in the warped space as well. Their work differs from most of the rest of string theory in that they predict quantum effects due to gravity that may soon be testable by the LHC. To parse the theoretical disunification of physics in disparate gravitational force-strength Lisa Randall and Raman Sundrum posited the existence of extra-dimensional brane-layers actively leaking energy fluctuations into our own universe; with mathematical supports, Randall and Sundrum illustrated their idea's compatibility with existing cosmological valuations and astrophysical data. Lisa Randall was the first tenured woman in physics at Princeton, as well as the first tenured theorist at Harvard and MIT. Additionally, she is the most cited theoretical physicist in the world. Even the unsigned 200 copies are quite scarce to the market and, of course, the 26 signed lettered copies with the original frontispiece are scarcer still. Hors de commerce copies, as offered here, would be the scarcest of the three. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY JOHN ASHBERY on the Limitation Page and SIGNED BY ELIZABETH MURRAY ON HER ORIGINAL ART. QUITE SCARCE.

        ANNIE LEIBOVITZ: WOMEN

New York City, NY: Random House, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Random House, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 239 pages. The photographer's fourth collection. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. An austerely elegant production by Annie Leibovitz, Ruth Ansel, and Tim Hossler: Oversize-volume format. Pristine white hard boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Annie Leibovitz. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States by Meridian Printing Rhode Island to the very highest standards. In pale gray DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents some of the most stunning and unforgettable portraits of American women ever taken. Widely regarded as one of her most important and most moving books, the collection affirms Annie Leibovitz's position as a serious documentary photographer with an unmistakable trademark style even though her fame as a fashion, lifestyle, and celebrity photographer remains paramount. Leibovitz herself credits Susan Sontag with the idea of putting together a book on women at the end of a truly dismal and catastrophic century, whose one incontestable achievement is the emancipation of women in many (but not most) parts of the world, the so-called Feminist Movement, of which both Leibovitz and Sontag are shining examples and foot soldiers. As the title suggests, every photograph is that of a woman or a group of women. The essay is provocatively titled, "A Photograph Isn't An Opinion. Or Is It?". Sontag wisely avoided writing about Leibovitz's "art" or "technique" (they were lifetime companions) . Instead, she chose to write about the book's deeply fascinating, profound, and interesting subject: "Each of these pictures must stand on its own. But the ensemble says, So this is what women are now, as different, as varied, as heroic, as forlorn, as conventional, as unconventional as this" (Susan Sontag) . Leibovitz is not just a commercially successful photographer. She is, quite simply, the most famous photographer in the world today, is a household word in America, and needs no further introduction. The people who buy her books are not primarily photography book collectors. This ensemble is her attempt to create a collection that will endure while drawing on her strengths as a portrait photographer. A "must-have" title for Annie Leibovitz collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the half-title page by Annie Leibovitz. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is one of the most beautiful copies we have ever seen. Most copies available online are subsequent printings or have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. 150 duotone and color plates. Two of the finest American artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANNIE LEIBOVITZ AND SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0375500200.

Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Collection of landscape photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously but should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. One of the smallest limitations ever, the Deluxe Edition is now rare. The editions have the same ISBN. An austerely elegant production by Robert Adams, Jerry Kelly, and Andrew Roth: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Robert Adams. Except for a very brief Introductory Note by Adams, there is no text. Printed in tritone on thick uncoated stock paper by the legendary Stinehour Press in the United States to the very highest standards. The reproductions have an immaculate beauty and purity that are both moving and breathtaking. Matching black hard board slipcase. Without DJ, as issued. Presents images of Eden, Colorado, which was named not after the Biblical place, but a former railroad official. The Garden of Mister Eden is made up of railroad tracks, gas tanks, metal sheds, military salvage lots, and the Westland Truck Stop, captured in "sunny-day" bright, starkly evocative photographs that implant themselves in one's mind. A photographer's photographer, Robert Adams has published indispensable books about the radical (and irreversible) transformation of the American West (his work is the inspiration for Richard Avedon's "In The American West") for more than forty years. A MacArthur Genius Grant laureate, one of very few photographers so honored, Adams is regarded by critics and admirers as the greatest American landscape photographer since Ansel Adams, with whom he ironically shares the same surname, and nothing else. Indeed, Robert Adams is the ultimate anti-Ansel Adams photographer, an artist who evokes our inner desolation and rejects Ansel's majesty and grandeur by exposing the detritus of modern civilization. The latter has done more to destroy both Nature and our natural connection to it than any other "development" in human history. This is a spare and perfect book by "the most restlessly and profoundly interesting American landscape photographer since Edward Weston" (Aperture Foundation). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Adams collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by the photographer: "Robert Adams 24". This title sold out before publication and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is one of only two copies of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition still available online, is enclosed within protective plastic wrappers, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 17 tritone plates. Robert Adams' "What We Bought: The New West" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT ADAMS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1564660680.

Legacy : Selected Paintings and Drawings by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art Frank Frazetta - (FRAZETTA LEGACY/LEGEND - UNIQUE SUPER-DELUXE EDITION)

Grass Valley, CA: Underwood Books, 1999 FRAZETTA LEGACY/LEGEND - UNIQUE SUPER-DELUXE EDITION: Copy 103 of 120 of the DELUXE LEATHER-BOUND TRAY-CASED FIRST COLLECTOR'S EDITION of LEGACY, hand-stamped with Frank Frazetta's signature, autographed by the participants, and foil-embossed with the Frazetta family seal of authenticity, WITH a UNIQUE ARCHIVE containing both black and white and full-color slick-paper proof sheets, a variant Limitation Page, and two different dust wrappers (designed for use with the regular trade and the slip-cased editions) all bearing the original unused title of LEGEND. These, along with a mention in the published book, were a gift to me from the publisher, Tim Underwood, in appreciation of my proofreading this second set of proofs and checking original publication dates of books bearing Frazetta art and for suggesting LEGACY as the book's title, in lieu of the forgotten and unwieldy one which had just been substituted for the original preferred title of LEGEND, which it was found could not be safely used due to legal complications. The archive consists of a LEGEND Limitation Page, using the same illustration as the published one but noting an edition-size of 100 copies as opposed to the 120 actually issued under the LEGACY title, and 53 folded 12 x 18 inch proof sheets representing 106 pages in the finished book, with an additional 5 (cut) single proof pages, one of which is a half-title page, bearing the word LEGEND over a black and white drawing, and one of which is the title-page, bearing the full title, LEGEND/SELECTED DRAWINGS & PAINTINGS by/ FRANK FRAZETTA/Edited by ARNIE FENNER & CATHY FENNER. (LEGEND is printed on every page bearing the book's title.) Of these sheets, the one containing pages 198 and 199 show images designed for use in the Bonus Section of the Slip-Cased and the Deluxe Editions which, however, were jettisoned and not used anywhere. One is a sepia-toned page with a large pen and ink drawing of a leering demon with an unconscious nude over one shoulder, and the other is a color photo of an artist-unattributed diorama sculpture of KING KONG fighting a serpent. There are also present 211 Xeroxed 8 ½ by 11 inch pages of the book bearing notations, layout instructions, and emendations, among the latter of which is one noting that a reference involving HARLAN ELLISON is not only not germane, but possibly actionable, thus ensuring it was deleted from all published versions, and one page instructing that the name printed showing the owner of a Frazetta painting be deleted, which instructions I have followed. A hand-written signed short note on the publisher's letterhead is included, dated 9-25-99 and mentioning that the actual books will be ready in a few weeks. I have noted this archive as unique, based on an included letter from Augusta Cobar at Global Interprint, Inc. detailing that this set of "untrimmed second proofs" is being dispatched to Underwood on 6/25/99 and that "Hong Kong will take a few days to trim the other 2-3 sets" so even if any of those survived, which I very much doubt, they would differ in their being trimmed. The Xeroxed pages are pristine; the two dust wrappers and the slick proof pages show some creasing and wrinkling in places, due to usage as intended, but are still very attractive. The LEGACY finished book and traycase are pristine. This is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire a genuinely unique and important Frazetta item. . First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New.
