A Core Collection; A Comprehensive Run of 17 Volumes

1999 - 17 vols. A comprehensive, high quality run of Proulx's work from her first nonfiction how-to books, to her award winning novels and stories, but this is a 20th century collection, and anyway, her 21st century titles are all common and you can add them for cheap if you like. 1) Great Grapes (1980). 1st edition (published by Storey Publications). Her first book, a 32 page monograph. Fine in wrappers. 2) Making the Best Apple Cider (1980). 1st edition (published by Garden Way, with little girl on cover, ads to A-47). A 32 page monograph. Near fine in wrappers, complete with 4 pages of ads on yellow paper. 3) Making the Best Apple Cider (after 1980). 2nd edition (published by Storey, with old man on cover, ads to A-137). Wraps. Fine. Not scarce. 4) Sweet and Hard Cider (1980). 1st edition. Her (co-written) first substantial book. Pictorial boards. The usual binding is in wrappers, this one is a scarce hardbound copy produced only for specially requested library pre-orders, with stamps on the front endpapers and a tiny one to the dedication page, otherwise fine, unworn, and despite the stamps, the only hardbound copy I've ever seen. The first significant publication of her 6 how-to books, written 8 years before she could get any of her fiction published. 5) What'll You Take For It (1981). 1st edition, an essay exploring barter. Her first individually published book. Wrappers a bit rubbed, spine faded, else near fine and unread. 6) The Complete Dairy Foods Cookbook (1982). 1st edition. Fine in a dustjacket with a 1/2" tear and slightly fade spine, else fine. Her second (and last) co-written book, the first with an E. before Annie. 7) Fences & Gates, Walkways, Walls & Drives (1983). 1st edition. Fine. Scarcer hardcover binding of the common trade issue in wraps, likely done with libraries in mind but our copy has no library marks. 8) The Gardner's Journal and Record Book (1983). 1st edition, not really an instruction book but not lacking in guidance either (only mad fools, gardeners and New Yorkers, go out in pouring rain). Pictorial boards. Fine. 9) The Fine Art of Salad Gardening (1985). 1st edition. Fine in fine dustjacket. Pretty much, chase off the gophers so you can eat like one. 10) The Gourmet Gardener (1987). 1st edition. Faded spine, else near fine in wrappers. Her last how-to book. "A garden is an honest place." -Emerson 11) Heart Songs (NY, 1988). 1st edition. Her first fiction. 9 mesmerizing short stories. Signed. Tiny NFS stamp, maybe a review copy, maybe not. Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Sharp angles to small things. 12) Postcards (NY, 1992). 1st edition. Her first novel. Signed and inscribed with a 4 line quotation (a superior inscription). Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Signed copies are around, inscribed ones are less common. 13) The Shipping News (NY, 1992). Advance excerpt (45 pages). Near fine pictorial wrappers with fading to the spine. 14) The Shipping News (NY, 1993). 1st edition. Pulitzer Prize. Signed and inscribed, ".long may your big jib draw." Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Turns a phrase better than her counterparts, and writes one elegant sentence after another. 15) Accordion Crimes (NY, 1996). 1st edition. Signed on the integral title page, a distinction of some note considering that 2,500 copies were signed on a tipped-in leaf. Fine in fine dustjacket. 16) Brokeback Mountain (London, 1998). 1st edition. Source of the film. Stiff pictorial wrappers. Near fine with fading to the spine. You had me at "Howdy." 17) Close Range (NY, 1999). 1st edition. Fine in fine dustjacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Harry Potter's wizarding adventures have had an unrivalled impact on popular culture today; indeed, some have referred to adults between the ages of roughly 20-30 years old as 'the Harry Potter generation'. Harry Potter is a series of many genres, including fantasy, bildungsroman, and the British school story (which includes elements of mystery, thriller, adventure, and romance). According to Rowling, the main theme of the books is death – although prejudice, corruption, and madness can be seen as dominant motifs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Complete Set of Signed Harry Potter Deluxe Editions

Bloomsbury 1999 - 2007, London - A wonderful complete set of the Harry Potter deluxe editions. All first editions, and presumed first printings, supplied to a book shop at the time of release. Very unusually all have an accompanying signed official Bloomsbury book plate. All are in fine condition. Best Wishes R'. Overall a truly exemplary set, a fantastic investment for any serious Harry Potter collection.         168 Jump Into Hell: A True Story of Betrayed Allied Airmen

Self Published, Canada 1999 - 0968419801 290 pages. Reproductions of black and white photos in text. "Whether by accident or design, governments and agencies have remained silent, so all the research has been up to us. However this true fifty year old shame must be revealed in the hope that mankind remembers and never allows it to be repeated." - from Foreword. "Our story tells what happened to 168 Allied Airmen who jumped into Northern Europe after their planes had met with an explosive and fiery end. Because our eventual betrayal to the Gestapo was accomplished so smoothly, a number of these encounters will be explained so that you can better understand our dilemma. The retelling of our encounter with our Gestapo hosts is mild, for many of us do not wish to recall the most unpleasant details that deserve to stay well hidden in the back of our minds. Now with this story told, we again wish to forget." - from Prologue. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding intact. A sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Hearts in Atlantis, Signed By the Author with Original Mailing Envelope, Barry Melton, Etc.

Scribner, New York; (1999) - Octavo. 523 pages. Inscribed: by the author "To Ron Combest--Here's the Vietnam book, Hope you like it. [includes his peace symbol', Stephen King 3/14/00. This is a novel that Kirkus Reviews calls King's masterpiece. Enclosed documents Letter I: February 25, 2000 to Stephen King on Mendocino County Superior Court letterhead, with a story of the correspondence between the Mendocino Judge and the note from Barry Melton. The Judge, Ronald R. Combest, notes what Stephen King had written in the back of the paperback edition of Bag of Bones "I was a child of the sixties, a child of Viet Nam as well, and have all through my career wished I could write about those times and those events from the Fish Cheer [note the original in concerts changed the three last letters F-I-S-H).Barry ("the Fish") Melton, who was then with County Joe and the Fish, did the Fish Cheer at Woodstock. Barry is currently the Yolo County Public Defender, and has been a good friend for many years--somewhat ironic in that I was an Infantry Platoon Leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam when Woodstock happened. He then asks him to inscribe a copy for Barry Melton which Stephen King does. Letter II: [same letterhead] March 18, 2000, notes he has received the Bag of Bones his notes to Barry "the Fish" Melton. He goes onto thank the author for all the contributions. Letter III; Enveloped and Card from Barry Melton to Hon. Ron Combest, Judge, Superior Court of Mendocino County, etc On his personal stationary card, May 8, 2000, he writes; "Dear Ron, ."I want to express my heartfelt thanks at such magnificent gifts [the two books signed by Stephen King] which go a step beyond most gifts I've received in my life. You are, indeed, a treasured friend, Barry." Finally, there is the large mailing envelope in which was mailed from King's Longboast Key, Florida address [where he was still recovering from the accident that took place on June 19, 1999]. A further insight into what the author's sentiments were in the Vietnam era with Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish and his feelings forty years after Woodstock. Bound in 1/4 black cloth over light blue paper covered boards, spine lettering red, bottom corners bumper, near fine in fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Very good overall. According to Rowling, the main theme of the books is death - although prejudice, corruption, and madness can be seen as dominant motifs.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Life Is Paradise: The Portraits Of Francesco Clemente

New York City, NY: PowerHouse Books(1999). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 189 pages. Artist Book. Retrospective collection of portrait-paintings. One of the most beautiful Artist Books of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition of 400 numbered and signed copies that sold out shortly after publication. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Francesco Clemente and Francesca Richer: Oversize-volume format. Red-orange cloth boards with titles on spine, as issued. Art by Francesco Clemente: Watercolor, oil, and dry media. Essay by Vincent Katz. 9 X 14 inch original lithograph ("Self-Portrait"), encased in its own glassine-and-rice paper sheet, laid-in. It is meant to be framed. Hard board pictorial slipcase with two reproductions, one on each side. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which reproduces the portrait of his wife and muse, Alba Clemente, and titles on the spine, as issued. Published to coincide with the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Guggenheim Museum New York in 1999, which travelled on to the new, Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2000. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Francesco Clemente's "Life Is Paradise". Perhaps the single most sensuously beautiful of his Artist Books: A celebration of life as only this Italian aesthete-artist can pull it off. Life is beautiful in Clemente's masterly hands. Seven thematic sequences: "Poets", "Oil On Wood", "Great Expectations", "Children", "Devi", "New York Muses", and "Voices". They include a rich selection of celebrity portrait-paintings that are meticulously chosen, as though they belonged to the artist's personal pantheon of divinities (starting with Alba Clemente) : John Ashbery, Anne Bancroft, Robert Creeley, the late Allen Ginsberg (with whom Clemente collaborated on several major projects), Philip Glass, Fran Lebowitz, Toni Morrison, and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name a motley few. Still, it is the art itself, the rendition, that mesmerizes and enthralls. Some of Clemente's portraits are precise and delicate. Others are dark and fierce. The subject's eyes are always dominant, but each one is rendered differently: Mask-like in one portrait, empathetic and humane in another. Clemente's sheer range will leave the viewer thinking about the infinite number of ways to portray, not just present, a particular human face. "One can wallow for days on end in these faces" (Vincent Katz). An absolute "must-have" title for Francesco Clemente collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition. It comes with a pristine 9 X 14 inch original lithograph ("Self-Portrait") that is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on recto by Francesco Clemente. The artwork comes in its own glassine-and-rice paper sheet, and is meant to be framed. This title is a great Artist Book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Clemente signed the artwork, NOT the book, as is his and the publisher's custom. Given an art market in which Clemente commands thousands of dollars, the artwork has been separated from the book in most cases because among art collectors (versus book collectors), it is much more valuable by itself. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates, 1 original artwork. One of the greatest artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER FRANCESCO CLEMENTE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1576870537.
