View from the summit / Sir Edmund Hillary

London : Doubleday, 1999, Hardback, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, 1st edition, 1st printing. "Physical description; 309p. : ill (some col), coat of arms, maps, ports. ; 25cm. Includes bibliographical references and index. Summary; The autobiography of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest. Hillary achieved many more adventuring "firsts" before establishing the Himalayan Trust, an organization devoted to improving the lives of people living in the Himalayas. Review: Although the world sees the first man to reach the summit of Everest as a hero, Hillary nevertheless sees himself as a person of modest abilities and humble origins, and this perception of himself is reinforced throughout his account of his own life. Hillary's achievement plays only a small part in his life, and he went on to lead part of the trans-Antarctic expedition and serve as New Zealand's high commissioner in India. He has worked over the years to provide schools, bridges and clinics for the Nepalese, although he is as modest about this aspect of his life's work as he is outspoken about the shortcomings of the expeditions with which he has been involved, and reticent about the tragic loss of his first wife and youngest child. His autobiography provides a unique perspective on one of the great heroes of the 20th century. Subjects; Hillary, Edmund Sir 1919-. Mountaineers - New Zealand - Biography.".         Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci (Signed Limited Edition)

London: FAB Press, 1999. First Edition. First Edition. One of 693 copies (this being No. 426) SIGNED by Stephen Thrower. A typically exhaustive and definitive production by Thrower, covering every imaginable aspect of the great director's canon. Along with Mario Bava and Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci is considered one of the fathers of the "giallo" style of filmmaking, beginning with Westerns and thrillers in the late 1960s, followed by a determined detour into horror in the mid-1970s. The director's very specific and unabashedly graphic style takes no prisoners, and has equal numbers of devotees and detractors. Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. A decidedly scarce title, a labor of love and an essential reference in the library of any genre film enthusiast.

Shipping Casualties (Loss of the Steamship "Titanic.") Report of a Formal Investigation into the circumstances attending the foundering on 15th April, 1912, of the British Steamship "Titanic," of Liverpool, after striking ice in . North Atlantic Ocean, whereby loss of life ensued. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty.

London: PRO Publications, n.d. ?1999 - Quarto. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spine, yellow silk page-marker, in matching slip-case. Very good. Limited edition, facsimile reprint of Lord Mersey's original 1912 enquiry into the sinking of the Titanic. 300 copies only, this being number 60, signed by Millvina Dean who, at 2 months and 27 days, was the youngest passenger on the liner, and who, in 2009, was the last survivor to die. Comprises almost 1000 pages of report and evidence, indexed by name and subject. At the time the inquiry drew accusations of partiality, based on Mersey's perceived bias towards the Board of Trade and the ship-owning interests. However, more recent studies have commented on the 'surprising impartiality' of their findings, despite remarking on Mersey's 'autocratic, impatient and not a little testy' court persona.         Das englische Haus, 3 Bde. [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hermann Muthesius (Autor)

3 Bde.

Wreckers of Civilisation [Civilization]: The Story of COUM Transmissions and Throbbing Gristle (First Edition, signed by Genesis P-Orridge)

London: Black Dog Publishing, 1999. First Edition. First Edition, originally issued as a trade softcover original. This copy rebound by Wiering Books in gray cloth with black titles and rule and an original Throbbing Gristle thunderbolt patch inset onto the front board. Artistically INSCRIBED by Throbbing Gristle frontman and COUM founder Genesis P-Orridge on the second blank: "To Andy / cari saluti, KNOW TIME / Genesis P-Orridge." Brainchild of Genesis P-Orridge (nee Neil Megson), COUM Transmissions was an influential and controversial performance art group. Using similar techniques as, and occasionally working with, such experimental artists as William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and the FLUXUS collective, as well as explicit nudity, bodily fluids, and other taboo material, they created shocking and confrontational exhibitions and happenings. In 1976, P-Orridge, along with COUM members Cosey Fanni Tutti and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, formed the pioneering industrial band Throbbing Gristle, continuing the group's experiments with noise, tape loops, samples, and found sounds, and influencing countless acts to follow. An in-depth exegesis of COUM/TG's boundary pushing work through the band's first breakup in 1981, including a complete discography and chronology of performances, concerts, and exhibitions. A unique presentation, in keeping with the utter originality of the subject, of a book that is quite scarce in its original paperback binding. Fine in boards. Small bindery label to the the rear pastedown. Interior pages with some light soiling or waviness, Near Fine overall.

John Wisdom had been a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Letter states, "Dear Mrs. Wisdom, You know far better than I do what a rich and full life your late husband led. His contributions to the law as a jurist were important to his court and to his country. His reputation as a staunch champion of the need for implementing the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education is well known. He and his colleagues on the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit were instrumental in seeing that the Court's mandate was carried out during a very difficult time. Harry Potter's wizarding adventures have had an unrivalled impact in popular culture today; indeed, some experts have referred to adults between the ages of roughly 20-30 years old as 'the Harry Potter generation', who are seen to hold markedly different values to their parents. Harry Potter is a series of many genres, including fantasy, bildungsroman, and the British school story (which includes elements of mystery, thriller, adventure, and romance). According to Rowling, the main theme of the books is death ?- although prejudice, corruption, and madness can be seen as dominant motifs.

Shipping Casualties (Loss of the Steamship "Titanic.")

London: PRO Publications, n.d., ?1999. Report of a Formal Investigation into the circumstances attending the foundering on 15th April, 1912, of the British Steamship "Titanic," of Liverpool, after striking ice in ... North Atlantic Ocean, whereby loss of life ensued. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty. Quarto. (Butler, Unsinkable: the full story of RMS Titanic.)
