        Crossfire Hurricane.

UK: Genesis Publications. 1997. LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED by Photographer Bob Gruen. Folio, bound in a superb three-colour silk-screened fabric cover, featuring Mick Jagger on the front board and Keith Richards on the back, with a four-colour screen printed slip case featuring the band.Crossfire Hurricane is a remarkable collection of photographs capturing twenty-five years of The Rolling Stones in America and contains over 350 shots, many in full colour and some previously unpublished. Famous rock photographer Bob Gruen has worked with many successful musicians, but has remained ever faithful to the group that first captured his heart. From 1972 he has photographed The Stones, documenting the band's touring career and also their solo appearances, both official and impromptu, and alongside other rock'n'roll legends such as John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry. The result is a breathtaking look at their impact on America as one of the most exciting live bands in the history of rock'n'roll. A superb production, and a single edition limited to 1750 copies long since sold out. Fine copy, number 1233, with an original advertisement leaf loosely inserted.

Illustrations to Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph Illustrations volume accompanying the 1997 limited edition of the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, finely bound copy #43/45

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Hardcover. This is the finely bound, stand-alone, limited issue of the Illustrations volume from the 1997 first Castle Hill press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford Text" of Seven Pillars of Wisdom.  This copy is hand-numbered #43 of 45 issued thus, in quarter green morocco over brown cloth.  Jeremy Wilson of Castle Hill Press informs us that these 45 copies are an interesting oddity.  When the binder contracted by Castle Hill press went out of business, 45 sets of unbound illustrations sheets were recovered.  ?We had these bound up and offered them to people who had bought full-goatskin or quarter-goatskin copies of the 2003 Library Edition of the 1922 Seven Pillars, which didn't have the colour plates of the 1997 edition. We gave precedence to holders of the full-goatskin copies.  The original plan was to have them bound in brown to match the Seven Pillars binding, but the same shade of brown wasn't available: nothing near it. So rather than send a bad match we did them in green, as a complementary colour.?  Of note the brown cloth is the same as that used on the slipcase for the 2003 full-goatskin binding issue of the 1922 text of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Condition of this copy is fine, the binding square, clean, bright, and tight, the contents immaculate with no previous ownership marks and no spotting.  The volume is a stunning visual accompaniment to any Seven Pillars of Wisdom text, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars Portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 127 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence formed and presented to the Imperial War Museum.  Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork - the story of his war years for which he became known as "Lawrence of Arabia" - for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to famously lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled "Revolt in the Desert". It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, the fuller "Oxford Text" - a third longer than the shortened text which became so famous - would not be republished until 1997.  Castle Hill Press took the text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing, issuing a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of the Oxford Text.  The first two volumes were text, the third with the contents of this accompanying Illustrations volume.  Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a

Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a [Attributes: Hard Cover]

That is until an owl turns up with a letter addressed to Harry and all hell breaks loose! He is literally rescued by a world where nothing is as it seems and magic lessons are the order of the day. Read and find out how Harry discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, the reason behind his parents mysterious death, who is out to kill him, and how he uncovers the most amazing secret of all time, the fabled Philosopher's Stone! All this and muggles too. Now, what are they? This is Jo's first book and she has already written seven outlines for Harry's further adventures at Hogwarts.

        Memento Mori.

Asheville, North Carolina:: Daniel Essig,, 1997.. One-of-a-kind. 15.5 x 13 x 5" bridge book. Materials: walnut, bark, handmade paper, milk paint, sinew, nest, snail shells. Ethiopian and coptic bindings. Signed and dated by the artist. Daniel Essig: "Dolph Smith helped push me beyond the simple Ethiopian book. He was making sculptural books by hanging paper from wooden structures, and I tracked him down and ultimately studied with him. Under his influence, I developed my bridge books, which use the same Coptic binding but exaggerate each of the elements: the covers become elongated into two-foot-long towers that stand on a tabletop, and rather than 10 or 12 signatures in the text block, I use 100 to 200, well over 1000 pages. I can't afford that much new paper, so to make the bridges I return to the idea of the altered book. I find books that have mangled spines and covers but good quality paper, and I use that paper in my work. Often I use old Bibles with exceptionally thin paper, which has a nice drape and flow. I like to listen to bookbinders try to justify tearing up old books, because it sometimes makes them feel a little guilty. I don't have much of a problem with the practice, because the books I alter are not rare, and they've already lived their lives. Bookbinders have been recycling books for 2000 years. In some of the first Coptic books, wood was scarce, and the binders would take old papyrus scrolls and laminate many layers together to make thick book covers."
