The Great Mystery

American Indian Mystery Press, 1997. First Edition/Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Archival Case. Tight, bright and unmarred. Full Japanese linen cloth, black Niger goatskin label, gilt and scarlet lettering; matching tray case. 4to. np. Illus. (color plates). Numbered limited edition, this being 25 of 60. Twenty-three color printed etchings by Bogardus. Text printed by Arthur Larson, Horton Tank Graphics. Bound by Gray Parrot. "The Great Mystery is a collaboration between the artist Peter Bogardus, who made the etchings, and Russell Means, who composed a handwritten text that was been relief-printed. The initial concept for the project occurred during a visit by the artist to the Oglala Lakota Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Allowed access to tribal archives, Mr. Bogardus was able to study many original photographic references. The iconography in these ancient images of the then still free Plains peoples provided inspiration for the etchings. At the same time the reality of late 20th century reservation life served to temper any tendency to romanticize the past. Thus the etchings are a vehicle for revisiting history while the text by Russell Means connects this history to the present, the "now time". Mr. Means is an Oglala Lakota and one of the founders of the American Indian Movement; he has been instrumental in activating pride among his people and awareness of their condition among the people of the larger US society and beyond. He is renowned as an orator. His captions to the etchings are contemporary responses to the history of his peoples' contact with those who came from Europe. The extended prose is based on a traditional prayer on the horizon at dawn. The Great Mystery is one name for the Creator.

The World Crisis (first abridged and revised edition)

This is the first abridged edition of Churchill's monumental and acclaimed history of World War I in the original first printing dust jacket - one of the most striking and rare dust jackets in the Churchill canon. The front face of the yellow-tan dust jacket features a full-length, half-tone photograph of Churchill striding, in top hat and tails with walking stick in hand. The rear cover features a smaller head and shoulders image of Churchill in the uniform of the South African Light Horse (set amid an advertisement for A Roving Commission). Writing in 1997, Churchill expert Richard Langworth said of this dust jacket "I know of only two or three of these in existence." We know of a few more than that, but certainly only a small number survive and very few collectors are able to own them. This first abridged and revised edition is not simply an abridgement, but a genuine first edition in its own right; Churchill made significant revisions and added a new introduction and an entire new chapter on the Battle of the Marne. Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. This copy is very good plus in the dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The only exterior flaw noted is some flaking of the gilt at the lower spine affecting the publisher's name and the gilt rule below. The contents remain clean and bright. We find no previous ownership marks and no internal spotting. All of the extensive maps and charts are present and properly folded. A partial split of the paper at the upper title page gutter is cosmetic only, with the mull beneath fully intact and the contents remaining tight within the binding. We note very light spotting to the page edges. The rare dust jacket is substantially intact but showing overall wear and soiling. The jacket shows minor chipping to a maximum depth of .25 inch at the spine ends and front face. There is wear along the hinges and flap folds, small losses at the flap folds, and overall soiling. The upper front flap is neatly price-clipped, with the original $5 price intact on the spine. A desirable survivor withal. The jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.5.a, Woods/ICS A31(ba.1), Langworth p.115.

Turnhout Brepols 1997 - Hardback, 1572 p., incl. 66 ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503506425. Blind Man's Bluff

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 1997. One of 50 copies, all on Fabriano Artistico paper, each signed by the artist on the colophon. Page size: 4-7/8 inches x 4-7/8 inches; 31 individual leaves (cards) including "Joker" and 2 "Wild Cards," titlepage, and colophon. Bound: housed in red cloth clamshell box by BookLab with title printed in silver gilt on front cover, new. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly who has printed it letterpress at Kelly / Winterton Press. There are 59 etchings of body parts - some hand watercolored - by Susan Weil from her drawings that were blind-drawn on copper, a technique that Weil has used for more than 50 years. The double-sided cards can be shuffled and dealt in any pattern, which contributes to the humorous possibilities in the title pun. Further, the cards can be re-arranged by simply turning them over, creating a new figure. The simple line etchings become incredibly complicated upon closer inspection. Playful and sly, touching and always imaginative, Ms. Weil gives us her unique view of the human condition, touching on varieties of emotions and stages of life, with an artist's eye.
See an Image.
The Jackson Pollock Sketch Books

New Yortk: Metropolitan Museum, 1997. Book. New. Soft cover. 1st Edition. New. Facsimile Edition. The Metropolitan's three sketchbooks by Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956), which date from about 1937 to about 1941, document an experimental and formative period for this major Abstract Expressionist. In much of the first two sketchbooks, Pollock followed the methods of his teacher-mentor Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975) by copying black-and-white reproductions of Old Master paintings from art books Pollock owned. These sketchbooks also contain a series of nude studies, two portraits of women, and the only known self-portrait drawing by Pollock. The third sketchbook consists of original compositions influenced by the work of Mexican muralists José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and also by Surrealism. Pollock's three sketchbooks are now published in a limited, numbered edition in facsimile form, presented in a rich, luxurious deep-brown cloth box. Each sketchbook facsimile is bound with chrome spiral bindings, as were the original sketchbooks, and stored on a separate tray in the box. They are accompanied by a booklet of illuminating essays, as well as comparative illustrations that provide detailed information about Pollock's sources for most of the seventy-one sheets of drawingssets. This is number 373 of an edition limited to 525 sets.
