Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska

New York: Harper Collins, 1997. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Timothy Treadwell. SIGNED. 199 pp. Octavo [24 cm]; blue and white paper covered boards, silver stamped title on spine, silver stamped bear illustration on front board. Inscribed by Timothy Treadwell on the title page. Treadwell's only book, scarcely found signed. Illustrated with twenty-seven of Treadwell's photographs in black and white. Timothy Treadwell was the in/famous "bear whisperer" who devoted many year of his life to protecting grizzly bears in the Alaskan wild. He claimed he was protecting the bears from poachers and hunters, who by most counts did not exist. During his time in the wild Treadwell filmed over 100 hours of footage, mostly documenting bears in the wild and his efforts to interact with them and "protect" them. Late in the fall of 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend were found dead after having been attacked by a 1,000 pound grizzly bear. In 2005, the filmmaker Werner Herzog made a remarkable documentary film about Treadwell called "Grizzly Man" which told the fascinating story of Treadwell's life and efforts, utilizing the best of Treadwell's own video footage to great effect.

Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 1997. Gifts of the Leaves with Prints from the Ova Series by Julia Ferrari

Ashuelot: Trois Fontaines [Golgonooza Letter Foundry], 1997 Ashuelot: Trois Fontaines [Golgonooza Letter Foundry]. 1997. One of 80 regular copies from a total issue of 109 copies (80 numbered copies, 26 lettered copies, and 3 Artist's Proof copies), all on Arches paper, each signed and numbered or lettered by the author and type designer, punch cutter and printer, Dan Carr, and the artist and binder, Julia Ferrari. The 80 numbered copies have one etching and three duotone reproductions by Julia Ferrari, who has also written an "Artist Afterword" and designed the beautiful shaped colophon. As an example of contemporary book arts, this may well be unique, I can think of no other book of contemporary verse where the author / printer has designed and cut a unique type face for his book. Page size: 12-1/2 inches x 9-1/4 inches; 72pp. Bound by Julia Ferrari: handmade green pastepaper with black and brown overall abstract design, corresponding to the frontispiece etching, title in black on white label on spine. All the numbered edition copies correspond to one season, depending on the frontispiece etching. That is, there are four variations of the book in the numbered edition with the different pastepapers used in the binding keyed to the original frontispiece etching. Dan Carr created a type face called Regulus after the star rising through the trees when the first alphabet was completed for his verse. In the Preface he states he views "the poems are collected as an alphabet." The collections of verse, he goes on, are about "transformation found in the seasons of a year...my poems revealed a kind of stations of the soul, the cycle of the seasons of frost and sun." The theme of transformation that occurs in nature and that constancy of change are perfectly interpreted in words and image. See an Image.

        El Aleph

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Ediciones Dos Amigos, 1997 Buenos Aires, Argentina: Ediciones Dos Amigos. 1997. One of 25 copies, but each copy unique, all printed on cream Velin d'Arches paper. Etchings and aquatints by Gabriela Aberastury, this copy one of the publisher's copies, unnumbered, but signed in white pencil by the artist, Gabriela Aberastury, the printer, Rubin Lapolla, and one of the publishers, Samuel Cesar Palui. Page size: 13-1/4 inches x 10 inches; 176pp; each page an original print - and many times several different print processes. Bound: loose in original black wrappers with Hebrew letter (Aleph) engraved in silver gilt on front panel and spine, housed in gray cloth over boards clamshell box with original etching on front of box, title printed in black on the spine, box a bit dinged at edges, book fine. Started in 1984 and finished 13 years later under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui and printed by Ruben R. Lapolla. Samuel Cesar Palui and Ernesto Lowenstein published this book to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Jorge Luis Borges in 1999. The artwork was created by Gabriela Aberastury who editioned all the prints. Rather than illustrate the text story by story, Aberastury chose to explore and reveal the Borgesian universe. She used different techniques: oil, acrylic, lacquer, engraving, gofrado, pencil working with the typographer / printer Ruben Lapolla to create pages that appear to have no beginning and no end - that seem not to have been created but rather revealed. One does not read it as completely enter another realm and experience it with several senses. The text is printed using linotype with gold, silver, copper and black used to create contrasts when the coloring of the paper required it. Truly a masterpiece of book arts, it resembles no other book we've seen.

, 1997. 1997. Limited to 200 Copies For Sale[ARION PRESS]. SHAKESPEARE, William. Shakespeare's Sonnets. Introduced and Edited by Helen Vendler. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1997. Limited to 200 numbered copies for sale, this being copy number 133. Quarto (8 x 6 5/8 in; 203 x 168 mm). (30), 154, (10, index), (1, colophon), (1, blank) pp. Quarter morocco over patterned silk boards. In the publisher's slipcase. As new."Shakespeare's 154 sonnets, which appeared in 1609, give us our last and best sight of him as a non-dramatic poet. In their original quarto version, printed on ordinary paper, two sonnets to a page, the poems appear fugitive and perishable. In fact, only a few copies of the quarto have survived. In this edition, each of these memorable poems is given its due - a page of its own. Here each sonnet can shine bright." (Introduction).

        Histoire du Soldat

Gonfalon Press, NP 1997 - A fine copy in all respects of this scarce volume. From the limited edtion of 110 copies, this one being number 95. Signed by Vonnegut and the book's creater and illustrator, Michael Fallon. Four color woodblock plates. An interesting history here. The work was initially conceived by Igor Stravinsky during the dark days of World War I. Because the war was so broad and all consuming Stravinsky found that he couldn't compose music for large ensembles and expect them to be performed because the war effort drained so many rescources. He decided to create an intimate work for small ensemble, spoken word, and dance. C.F. Ramuz wrote the original libretto, telling the story of a soldier returning from war who meets the devil along the way. The devil convinces the soldier to place a wager revolving around the playing of the soldier's violin. The work ends with the devil winning the wager by, no surprise here, cheating. Vonnegut doesn't comment much on the music but he seemed incensed by the libretto and wrote this work as his response. He deems Ramuz a hack and the libretto a weak trifle. Vonnegut's story involves Private Eddie Slovik, (un-named in this treatment) the only US solider executed by firing squad during the World War II. The text is much harsher than the original treatment and much less forgiving. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gifts of the Leaves with Prints from the Ova Series by Julia Ferrari.

Trois Fontaines [Golgonooza Letter Foundry], Ashuelot 1997 - One of 80 regular copies from a total issue of 109 copies (80 numbered copies, 26 lettered copies, and 3 Artist's Proof copies), all on Arches paper, each signed and numbered or lettered by the author and type designer, punch cutter and printer, Dan Carr, and the artist and binder, Julia Ferrari. That is, there are four variations of the book in the numbered edition with the different pastepapers used in the binding keyed to the original frontispiece etching.Dan Carr created a type face called Regulus after the star rising through the trees when the first alphabet was completed for his verse. In the Preface he states he views "the poems are collected as an alphabet." The collections of verse, he goes on, are about "transformation found in the seasons of a year.my poems revealed a kind of stations of the soul, the cycle of the seasons of frost and sun." The theme of transformation that occurs in nature and that constancy of change are perfectly interpreted in words and image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
