THE BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA Volume IV (Pittas, Bowerbirds, Wattlebirds, Honeyeaters, Sunbirds, Cuckoos, Tree-creepers)

Melbourne: Hill House, 1996. First limited facsimile edition thus. Original brown-red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt, preserved in the original carton. 104 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. An as-new copy, outer storage box marked. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." We may be able to offer discounts on the book price for direct purchase and also for multiple purchases. We hold the full set of Birds of Australia in stock. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. New/No Dust Jacket. Elephant Folio. Book.

        The Emigrants [Die Ausgewanderten]

London: Harvill Press, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/Fine. First Impression of Sebald's first book published in an English-language edition, translated from the German by Michael Hulse. 8vo: [8],237,[1]pp, profusely illustrated with black and white, unlabeled photographs (as are most of Sebald's texts) in a documentary style. Publisher's blue cloth-effect, paper-covered boards, spine stamped in gilt, illustrated dust jacket. A stunning copy, virtually pristine, tight, square and apparently unread, uncompromised in every way, save for the jacket's price-clipped front flap. Presented the Berlin Literature Prize, the Literatur Nord Prize, and the Johannes Bobrowski Medal. Sebald's narrator recounts the life stories of four characters, all of whom are German emigrants, to England and the United States. The stories touch on the themes of memory (and the compulsion to obliterate it), mourning and melancholia, trauma, and feelings of foreignness. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

A few spots to wrapper and light use to edges, publicity contact label on upper wrapper, a few leaves creased, but about very good. The publisher's advance reading copy of the first edition, from uncorrected proofs, specially signed by the author. Laid in are a clean typescript of her review, along with the galleys for her review with a handful of corrections and revisions. A tearsheet of her published review is tipped in.

GARY SCHNEIDER: "JOHN IN SIXTEEN PARTS": LIMITED-EDITION PRINT

New York City, NY: Gary Schneider Studios, 1996. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Gary Schneider Studios, 1996. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Gary Schneider collectible art. A pristine Limited-Edition print of one of the most iconic images from his celebrated sequence, "John In Sixteen Parts", titled, numbered, dated, and signed by Gary Schneider. There is no ISBN. The print is now rare. A brilliant production by Gary Schneider: Regular-sized print format. Measures 8 X 10 inches. In the artist's protective plastic sleeve. Eminently suitable for framing. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Gary Schneider's "John In Sixteen Parts, Part #3". The extreme close-up of the model John Erdman's right eye. From the complete sequence of images that show his various body parts (of his face), lovingly, probingly, and "scientifically" photographed by Gary Schneider (Erdman is the artist/photographer's longtime companion). Both the concept and its realization are brilliant, resulting in imagery that is strikingly original, "Conceptual" photography that is imagined rather than conceived, the work of an artist/photographer who has somehow given us a rare glimpse into the human soul, in all its beauty, pain, and "materiality", through photographs of the human body. The complete sequence was published as the eponymous Artist Book in 1997. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item/artwork for Gary Schneider collectors. <b><i> This Limited-Edition print is one of 20 copies, indicated/numbered as such on recto, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully titled, dated, and signed in pencil by the artist/photographer: "John In Sixteen Parts 1996 Part #3 4/20 Gary Schneider". This title is a great photographic print. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is in the artist's protective plastic sleeve, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Gary Schneider prints command thousands of dollars from his galleries, at art fairs, and at auction. His work is slowly but surely destined for canonical recognition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed print thus. </b></i> 1 original photographic print. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A flawless collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER GARY SCHNEIDER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

THE WHITTINGTON PRESS A BIBLIOGRAPHY 1982-1993 With An Introduction By John Randle

Risbury, Herefordshire: The Whittington Press, June, 1996. NUMBERED FIRST AND LIMITED EDITION, one of only 80 copies bound in vellum and marbled boards and one of only a small number to include an extensive set of tipped-in specimen pages. Including the normal copies, there was a printing of only 380 copies in total. Included is a printed letter/order form with notations and salutation in hand from Rosalind Randle to the original owner. Handsomely printed on Zerkall mould-made papers, illustrated with engravings printed from woodblocks and tritone plates printed by DTD, and with the set of over 40 specimen pages, mostly from the original printings, which was not included in the 244 buckram bound copies. 4to, in the original binding by the Fine Bindery of half vellum over beautifully marbled paper covered boards, the spine panel trimmed and lettered in gilt, in the original slipcase. 179, [1], specimen leaves. A pristine and perfect as mint copy of this beautifully produced book. FIRST EDITION, VERY LIMITED ISSUE AND A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THIS MODERN FINE PRESS. The Whittington Press has, since 1971, been printing books by letterpress from type ('as God intended', the Reverand Bernard Roberts once remarked), in the Gloucestershire village of Whittington. The Press was begun by John and Rosalind Randle partly as the result of an early enthusiasm for Caslon type, Albion presses and hand-made papers, and partly because of a wish to escape from London publishing jobs at the weekend. The first book of the Press, Richard Kennedy's 'A Boy at the Hogarth Press' (1972), which took a year of weekends and holidays to print in an edition of 525 copies on an 1848 Columbian hand-press, proved to be that rare event in the private press world, a best seller, and encouraged the founders to make the Press a full-time activity in 1974. From 1972 to 1991 the Press? home was at Manor Farm, Andoversford, a mile away from the presses at Whittington. Since 1972 they have printed, and nearly always published, some 250 books, including the renowned annual review for printers and bibliophiles, Matrix (?by far the finest periodical of the book arts of the twentieth century, surpassing even the seven-volume Fleuron issued in the 1920s?), which is now in its thirty-fifth year. The Press has received numerous awards for its printing and publishing, including THE AMERICAN PRINTING HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION?S AWARD for Matrix, the first time APHA?S INSTITUTIONAL AWARD has gone to a private press. The Press has a varied list, which can be best described as belles lettres, and includes books with and about wood-engravings, bibliographies of other presses, type specimens, diaries, pochoir (stencil) illustration, and much else. One common theme is illustration, nearly always printed from the original block, plate or stencil (?things, not pictures of things?, as Eric Gill once said).
