NAN GOLDIN: I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR

New York City, NY: Whitney Museum Of American Art/Scalo Publishers, 1996. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Whitney Museum Of American Art/Scalo Publishers, 1996. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 492 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hans Werner Holzwarth Berlin: Oversize-volume format. Green hard boards with black titles printed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Nan Goldin. Essay by Curator Elizabeth Sussman, who places Goldin in an artistic context ranging from Larry Clark to Lucian Freud. Commentary from a cast of Goldin's friends and colleagues, including Cookie Mueller, David Wojnarowicz, Luc Sante, and Darryl Pinckney. Interview with film critic J. Hoberman. List of Plates, Exhibition History, and Selected Bibliography appended at the end. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Germany to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features a self-portrait on the cover, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1996-1997. Presents photographs taken over a 25-year period which document "Nan's family", the underground culture of Manhattan and her "extended family" abroad, in places like Thailand, the Philippines, and Italy. Nan Goldin turns her camera outward, to record the social impact of AIDS and drugs, and inward, to look with unblinking intimacy at her friends, her lovers, and herself. She photographs her battered face in the mirror after he beats her up (the overriding motif of the book) . She photographs them kissing and making up, and making love. She traces the decline and death of her friend Cookie Mueller from AIDS. She shows male prostitutes in Bangkok and Manila, who opened their hearts to her. She follows her friends around in Italy, where they returned to be cared for with compassion before dying. The universal primacy of erotic desire as seen through intimate friendships, casual sexual encounters, and full-fledged romances, what Goldin herself beautifully calls "coupling", is the collection's powerful theme. This is not a scholarly analysis of Goldin's work, but an emotionally charged look at her life and times. Together with "The Devil's Playground", it is her best work since "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency". A "must-have" title for Nan Goldin collectors. This presentation copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by Nan Goldin. The recipient is named. The artist/photographer recently returned to the United States after living in Europe for the greater part of the last six years (2000-2006) . She made a very rare, sensational Chicago appearance on the occasion of the exhibition and acquisition of "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" by the Art Institute of Chicago. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 300 color plates. Nan Goldin's "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" is regarded as the most important photography book since "Diane Arbus". One of the most influential living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NAN GOLDIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141330.

        MEIN KAMPF

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 1996. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 1996. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 87 pages. Landmark collection of color photographs on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. An austerely elegant production by David Levinthal and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the front cover and red titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by David Levinthal. Essays by Roger Rosenblatt, Garry Trudeau, and James E. Young. This is Levinthal's second collaboration with Trudeau, the creator of "Doonesbury". 8 X 10 inch Cibachrome print matted and laid into the box. Handmade black cloth clamshell box. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Japan to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents in the ultimate Deluxe-Edition format "Mein Kampf", David Levinthal's sequel/companion volume to "Hitler Moves East" (1977). The latter consisted of black-and-white photographs; the present collection is entirely in color. Like his other collections built around compelling themes, "Mein Kampf", whose title is adopted from Adolf Hitler's autobiography/political manifesto, tells an unforgettable photo-narrative about a Past that continues to haunt the Present. It is not possible to imagine a more demonic figure than Hitler and a more evil ideology than Nazism. What makes "Mein Kampf" permanently disturbing is Levinthal's point that Hitler may be long dead but his legacy is very much alive, very much with us. Photographing his toy artifacts is an artistic strategy that is now identified with the artist. Levinthal is a collector twice over: First, of vintage toys, which are valuable in and of themselves (Levinthal's photographs would not have the same power if the toys were new or merely replicas, therefore not "collectible"); second, of images by their photographer/collector, who deploys a highly developed technique that enables him to make the toys come, uncannily, to life. As such, Levinthal's body of work is ultimately about aesthetics versus ethics, the paradox of the aesthetically pleasing photograph (which seduces) despite its ethically horrific subject (which repels). The photographs are beautiful, which is not the same thing as saying they glorify their subject. They do not. Instead, their beauty paradoxically makes us more aware of the simple fact that evil persists. An absolute "must-have" title for David Levinthal collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen on the Back Limitation Page by David Levinthal. Laid-in is an 8 X 10 inch Cibachrome print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, dated, and signed in black ink-pen on verso by the artist/photographer: "David Levinthal 1996 20/100". This title is now very highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 59 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the greatest living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID LEVINTHAL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0944092446.

The Fallen Man (Original manuscript, with author's hand corrections)

New York: HarperCollins, 1996. Tony Hillerman's original typescript for his novel "The Fallen Man," with his original holograph corrections in ink. Housed in a plain orange publisher's box, with a memo from Hillerman, on his stationery, affixed to the lid. & & The history of the manuscript is explained in three documents that accompany the typescript: (1) a letter from the editorial staff at HarperCollins, on the publisher's stationery, stating that this the most recent copy-edited typescript, (2) an autograph note on publisher's memo stationery from Hillerman's editor Eamon Dolan, asking Hillerman to provide final changes, and thanking him for providing jacket copy, which he says is superior to his, and will appear "virtually unchanged on the book's flaps," and (3) an autograph note on Hillerman's personal stationery to a bookseller friend, stating that it is his copy of the final corrected typescript (which was ultimately returned to him by the publisher, after the changes were made for the book). Finally, the box has a plain white label affixed to the front panel, on which the author has written in holograph ink: "Fallen Man" (corrected from 'Fallen Men') - copy edited and revised ms.," followed by the author's Albuquerque address from that time. & & Hillerman is well-known for making constant revisions to his novels, and in many instances the endings to his books are found to be changed completely between the issue of the proof and the hardcover edition, and even between the hardcover edition and the paperback edition. A unique item, and evidence of a completed work from one of the key mystery writers of his generation, one unique in his perspective regarding American Indian culture and the American Southwest.

        SELECTED POEMS 1947 - 1995

[New York]: HarperCollins, [1996].. Cloth and boards. About fine in dust jacket. Second impression of the first edition. Inscribed and signed by Ginsberg on the title-page: Allen Ginsberg for Lucien Carr & Family 12/23/96 Merry Christmas Happy New Year." On the blank page facing the title, Ginsberg has drawn a full page depiction of a skeleton (with hat) surrounded by a large, decorative snake chasing its tail, the whole against a field of stars, and inscribed at the bottom: "For LC from AG 12/23/96." Laid in is an invitation to an exhibit of Ginsberg's photographs at Tibor de Nagy Gallery. Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings, including this printing. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...."

        Trinacria

Submarine Dream. Lithographs and Letters. Edited by Brian Webb with an Introduction by Peyton Skipwith.

(London): The Camberwell Press, 1996. . Limited edition, no. 144 of 225 from a total edition of 300 copies with an additional suite of loose plates being no. 14 of 50 sets, both parts signed by Brian Webb on their respective limitation pages. Square folio. (34) pp. Publisher's cloth backed boards featuring a pattern designed by Tirzah Ravilious, the same pattern used for the upper cover of the portfolio holding the additional suite of plates. 12 plates, being a sketch of one of the images, a facsimile of Ravilious permits to travel and the 10 colour plates, all duplicated in the additional suite. Fine. Eric Ravilious was commissioned as an official war artist in late 1939. As Webb notes in his preface, he got off to a slow start, but found a suitable subject for his vision when posted to the submarine HMS Dolphin sailing out of Gosport in the summer of 1940. In the following months he produced a series of lithographs from his drawings printed by Cowell's of Ipswich, the Curwen Press in London's East End having been bombed, and subsequently sold by the Leicester Gallery. It has been suggested that 50 sets of plates were to be produced, though due to the wartime conditions it remains open to conjecture as to how many were actually printed. The letters reproduced in this work date between January 1940 and April 1941, they provide a glimpse into Ravilious' experience as a war artist and the labours of producing this striking series of images. Of the edition of 300, 75 special copies were supplied with the extra suite of plates. The publisher also sold the suite separately in this edition of 50, the original owner having bought both parts together directly from the Camberwell Press at the time of publication.

The Peoples of Middle-Earth, 1st Edition, 1st Printing, with Dustjacket

London: Harper Collins, 1996. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Peoples of Middle-Earth, by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. Published by Harper Collins in 1996. This book is in Near Fine condition, with no writing or previous owners names. The paper has lightly browned at the edges, as is common with the last 3 volumes of the series, due to paper quality issues. There is no foxing or offsetting to the interior of the textblock, and no spotting to the edges. The dustjacket is not priced or clipped, indicating this is the export edition. It shows very little rubbing to the glossy surface, minor edgewear with a tiny bit of color loss to the upper rear spine fold area. The spine is not faded as is often the case. This remains the toughest of the series to find, as Harper Collins pulled the edition from shelves, and pulped them, leaving only a very few copies in circulation. This is not a library or Print on Demand copy, but a highly prized true UK 1st Edition 1st Impression in wonderful condition. From the blurb, 'The final volume of the 12 volume series of The History of Middle-Earth in which Christopher Tolkien shows the evolution, from his fathers records and essays, of the chronology of the later Ages, the Calendars, the Hobbit genealogies, and the Westron language or Common Speech. This book concludes with two unfinished stories, The New Shadow, taking place in Gondor of The Fourth Age, and the tale of Tal-elmar, the coming of the dreaded Numenorean ships as seen through the eyes of men during the Dark Years.' Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.

        A Game of Thrones

(London): Voyager/HarperCollins. (1996). A special preview edition of the first British edition of Book One of Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, printing the opening chapters (123 pages). Signed by Martin. The British edition had an earlier publication date than the U.S. edition, and this advance copy predates the U.K. publication. Early copies of the U.S. edition that were given out at the annual booksellers convention may predate this. Still, one of the earliest, if not the earliest, version of this book to be presented to the public. The full book, when published, won the Locus Award for best novel of the year and was a nominee for the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. Fifteen years after its original publication, a television miniseries based on the book became a huge commercial and critical success, earning 13 Emmy nominations, and winning two. It also caused this title to climb to No. 1 on the bestseller list for the first time. Hint of a lower corner crease to rear cover; else fine in wrappers. Scarce, especially signed. . First Edition.
