        Doubleday Hypertext.6 [fauna]

Rochester, New York:: Visual Books,, 1995.. Serires of 8 variants. 7 x 9.75" altered book. Laid in custom tray with plexiglass overlay. Signed and dated by the artist in bottom of tray. Tray and book in archival custom box with cord tie closure. Scott McCarney: "Part of a series of eight altered books commenting on the shift of information technology from analog to digital media. Information from each individual volume is rearranged into new hierarchies through carving the book block into a pattern of pixels." Cyril Reade, curator, NXT.Message: "The book works of Scott McCarney transform the very nature of the book, the site of writing and the site where the original story evoked here, Genesis, has traditionally been transmitted. The Doubleday Hypertext and Diderot/Americana treat the books?' surfaces like a palimpsest in a series of gestures that sculpturally and visually layer in new meaning. But McCarney, while respecting the book sui generis, shows no respect for the original text or the original function, and transforms the possibilities of the sculpted book as he layers in pages from other publications that have been digitally scanned and reproduced. He re-writes the book itself, recreating the narrative it has to offer, reshuffling the original knowledge and transforming it from the textual to a visual and sculptural object. He orchestrates the multiple voices of disparate knowledges into a visual Tower of Babel, much like each surfing of the net creates a new mix. "The objects here attest to a loss of aura around themes that informed sacred texts and the objects that transmitted them. Knowledge has become portable and mobile, and subject to new combinations, always available for formulation as the next message.

ED RUSCHA: SAYINGS FROM PUDD'NHEAD WILSON

Greve/Hine & Limestone Press, NP (San Francisco) 1995 - np (32pp), 1 letterpress colophon + title page, full deckled edges, 10 color lithographs. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Sayings from Pudd'nhead Wilson" is Edward Ruscha's oversized, luxe artist's book published in 1995 by Greve/Hine and Limestone Press. It contains ten original color lithographs each featuring a colorful vernacular phrase such as "Is You Feared O' De Haunted House?" and "Jes Listen to Dat" selected by the artist from Mark Twain's 1894 novel "Pudd'nhead Wilson" presented in Ruscha's own folksy lettering against a faux wood-grained background. The 19 x 15" original graphics were supervised by master printer Veda Ozelle at San Francisco's Limestone Press. The book was designed and typeset by Hank Hine, printed by hand-letterpress by Gene Brill, and hand-bound in 3/4 black leather over maroon cloth by Peggy Gotthold. Its front cover features a unique stencil-bleached letter "S" designed by the artist. A most handsome Artist's Proof example of the first and only printing (print entries 226-235 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999") of this exquisite, exceedingly uncommon volume whose standard edition was limited to forty copies plus ten various proofs NUMBERED (A.P. II/IV) AND BOLDLY SIGNED "Ed Ruscha 1995" in black ink on the rear colophon, as issued. Ross comments: "My wartime experiences in Italy lasted over a year without giving me the pleasures of a trip to Venice. It wasnt until 1949, during a nine month stay in Europe, that we first visited Venice. However, in the past 14 years, my wife (Clare Romano) and I have spent two months every summer living and working in Venice, absorbing the sights and feeling of this venerable city. Its architectural flamboyancies have impressed thousands of artists and writers through the years and I have joined this group. I have produced 4 books on Venice and may do more." A wonderful book, with a dramatic surprise of the fold-out etching.

John's Apples. Thirteen Paintings by John Wilde. Twelve Poems by Reeve Lindbergh

[Mt. Horeb, WI: The Perishable Press. 1995]. One of 125 numbered copies, on 10 different papers. Page size: 9-7/8 x 6- 3/4 inches, 102pp; 78 of which printed. Bound by the printer: drab paper over boards with rondel cut-out on upper panel showing color image of two Golden Delicious apples (one with bite mark), publisher's red pencil notation on illustration, linen spine, new. Printed on a Heidelberg CPC and an old Vandercook, the 14pt. Stempel Syntax was set by hand. Perishable Press's announcement of this book tells us that this is "Ostensibly, a children's book concerning apples via the paintings and poems. More apparently there is a[n]…agenda concerning 'admission of structure' which is an attempt to show how books grow from idea to artifact. Right off, the unfinished-looking front cover is Not glued down and two of the seven signatures are left uncut and untrimmed, replete with colorbars, etc.!" "An absolute pedagogical necessity for the children of all well-to-do graphic designers." The poems are charming, the images beautiful, but the book's structure is the real star, with pages reproduced in parts and/or in reverse in the back on various papers, some pages French fold, etc. My favorite page: blank except for the words "Eventually we have to choose." A lovely and intriguing book. PP #121. See an Image.

Vintage Dr Gonzo [Signed Artist's Proof]

(Lexington): (Joe Petro III). (1995). A color silkscreen of a classic Steadman image of Thompson, taken from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Initialed by Thompson and signed by Steadman. Steadman is a renowned contemporary artist in his own right, but his images of Thompson are iconic. Only two of his prints were ever signed by both Steadman and by Thompson, this being one of them. A four-color image -- the image is black-and-white with the exception of Thompson's Hawaiian shirt -- there were 500 numbered copies; this copy is labeled "A/P," an Artist's Proof, presumably a much smaller number of these were done. 16-1/2" x 19".         Vintage Dr. Gonzo [Signed Artist's Proof]

(Joe Petro III), (Lexington) 1995 - A color silkscreen of a classic Steadman image of Thompson, taken from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Mild edge creasing, now matted and framed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
