Far Out Safari - Limited Edition Print (Signed)

1994. Print. New. Lithograph print by Carl Barks on Acid-free Paper. SIGNED NUMBERED PRINT. Size: 10" x 8" (254mm x 203mm). Uncle Scrooge McDuck and his nephews Donald Duck with the scintillating trio of little ducks, Huey, Dewey and Louie, are on their way to Africa so the patriarch of the clan can bid on -- and hopefully buy -- the famous Kaffir de Gaffir gold mine. Little does Scrooge know, however, that his arch rival, Flintheart Glomgold, also has eyes to own the mine and is determined to keep Scrooge from getting it! After their private plane is shot down, the ducks must rely on the boys' copy of the Junior Woodchucks Guide Book instruction section on how to make animal-taming whistles so they can "hitch rides" on passing fauna and fowl: lions, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, cape buffaloes, warthogs, ostriches, elephants, giraffes, zebras, gemsboks, impalas, jackals and, yes, even rhinoceroses, to help convey them to their destination. Far Out Safari was taken from a simple cover design Carl Barks drew for Uncle Scrooge #61, published in January 1966, illustrating the lead story inside, So Far and No Safari. Far Out Safari was printed by the Black Box of Chicago, image size 7 1/2x10 on 11x13 Opalesque Keramique, a paper constructed of 100% cotton fibre for strength and longevity, guaranteed not to fade under normal and stable storage conditions for hundreds of years. Limited signed edition of 595.

      - Borba de Moraes, p. 826 ("This French edition is much sought after"); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 362; Leclerc 1994; Rodrigues 2288; Sabin 89451; Tiele, Bibl. 1030; Tiele, Mém. 70; Warnsinck, p. 178; not in Rahir; Willems. First and only edition of the French translation of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (pp. 117-172) with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. The work is also of interest for the 17th-century Dutch presence in Brazil (see below). Rich in ethnographic detail, the numerous illustrations in the Miroir include oversized penguins, llamas and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. Naval battles, beleaguered Spanish settlements, and newly discovered islands are also depicted in detail, making the work a valuable compendium of adventure on the high seas during the Age of Discovery. The maps and views -- printed from the plates of the first edition -- depicting the new discoveries are of prime interest, especially the map of the Strait of Magellan (here lightly coloured), the map of the Strait of Manilles and the large map of the Malayan archipelago with an inset-map of the Strait of Boeton. In 1614 the VOC commissioned Spilbergen to sail to the Moluccas with nearly 700 men. Despite the commercial nature of his expedition, Spilbergen's six vessels were heavily armed, anticipating encounters with silver-laden Spanish vessels. Spilbergen spent two years calling at various Spanish and Portuguese ports along both coasts of South America, failing to capture any great amounts of silver or silk from Manila, but burning several settlements and emerging triumphant from a naval skirmish just south of Lima.By contrast, Le Maire's less mercenary expedition resulted in important discoveries; his exploration of Tierra del Fuego and the Tuamotou Archipelago called into doubt the existence of a massive southern continent, providing a catalyst for Tasman's discovery of New Zealand and Australia. The two expeditions crossed paths in the Dutch East Indies in 1616. This work is remarkable as an early document on Dutch navigation to the Brazilian coasts. Its great value lies in Spilbergen's detailed account of the stay in the Ilha Grande, from October 1614 to January 1615, and in São Vicente in 1615. Plate 2, depicting the disordered landing of Dutch vessels in São Vicente, clearly documents the way of life of the indigenous peoples under Portuguese occupancy. Colonial religious structures appear alongside typical Native American hammocks, and traditional Brazilian costumes and methods of animal husbandry are evident. This illustration with its explanatory text is particularly important, as the 17th-century ethnographic documents about the future São Paulo are very rare. This edition includes three important additions to the text of the journal: (1) a description of the government of Peru and Chile by the Spanish Pedro de Madriga (pp. 63-74), (2) an account on the Molluccas by Apolonus Schot from Middelburg (pp. 96-107), and a description of the fortresses, artillery, ships, etc. in the service of the Dutch East India Company in July 1616 (pp. 107-115).Niclaes Geelkerck in Leiden published the first editions of the Miroir in Dutch as Oost en West-Indische spiegel der nieuwe navigatien . and in a (somewhat abridged) Latin translation (both 1619), with identical plates. Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam published a second Dutch edition and the present French edition (both 1621), using the same 25 plates.

IN SOCCER WONDERLAND: A FAN'S VISION OF FOOTBALL (WITH A FAN'S SOUVENIR FOOTBALL STAMP ALBUM)

London, England: Booth-Clibborn Editions, 1994. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Booth-Clibborn Editions, 1994. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 168 pages. Collection of photographs with accompanying text on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. It comes with a copy of the "In Soccer Wonderland" Souvenir Football Stamp Album, which is now very rare. A brilliant production by Julian Germain and Why Not Associates: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Julian Germain. Germain&#39;s text is beautifully and movingly written, an autobiography of a fan&#39;s obsession that serves as a prism of his life. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Hong Kong to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. The book was originally shown at the exhibition of the same name held at The Photographer&#39;s Gallery London in 1992. Presents one of the most unusual sports photography books ever published, with a design that flawlessly captures the vibrancy, dynamism, and sheer excitement of the game on the page through the juxtaposition of Julian Germain&#39;s contemporary photographs and text with graphics, layout, doublespreads, vintage photographs, souvenirs, trading cards, head dolls, trophies, and other soccer memorabilia. The British, European, and Latin-American fanaticism about soccer, which has made it the world&#39;s greatest sport, is the subject of the book, and it is truly wonderful indeed (the title is clearly an inverted homage to "Alice&#39;s Adventures in Wonderland") . "Germain is a pioneer of the contemporary photo-collage book, whereby different types and generations of the photograph are combined to make a pluralist genre of photobook" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger) . Parr and Badger are idiosyncratically and dogmatically opinionated about their own passion for photography books. But their inclusion of "In Soccer Wonderland" is a sure goal. Julian Germain&#39;s images leap off the page with such infectious spontaneity, and his book should delight and dazzle not just soccer fans but all lovers of great photography books. A "must-have" title for Julian Germain collectors. <b><i> This is an Import tit leand is now very highly collectible. It comes with a copy of the Stamp Souvenir Album, which is now virtually impossible to find and rare. As far as we know, this is the only set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. All other copies available online have major flaws. A rare set thus. </b></i> Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. All 24 stamps are encased in the original glassine sheet. "In Soccer Wonderland" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the finest living British photographers. A fine collectible copy.         Sight and Touch

(New York): Limited Editions Club, (1994). Folio. 12ff. One of 300 numbered copies signed by the author and Balthus, the illustrator. Text in Spanish, French, and English. Designed by Dan Carr and printed at the Wild Carrot Press in Hadley, Mass., this trilingual edition of Octavio Paz&#39;s poem is illustrated with three full-page color woodcuts designed by Balthus, to whom the poem was dedicated. Balthus&#39;s paintings, from which the illustrations were cut into wood by Keiji Shinohara of Malden, Mass., measure nearly two feet in length and depict a rural landscape, a female nude, and a still life of vegetables. The poem was originally published in Spanish and English translation by New Directions in 1987 and, as Paz states, is about light, which "is time thinking about itself." The text for this edition was set by Julia Ferrari and Dan Carr at the Golgonooza Letter Foundry in Ashuelot, New Hampshire and printed on handmade Kozo Uwazen paper. Bound in linen boards with a goatskin spine, and housed in a tan cloth-covered clamshell box with a leather label to the front cover. LEC newsletter laid in. A fine New England production by a celebrated poet.

        BARREL FEVER: STORIES AND ESSAYS

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1994. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1994. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 196 pages. The author&#39;s debut collection of short stories and essays. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Published to enormous critical acclaim, it made David Sedaris an overnight cult figure and the book is now rare as a First Edition. He did not achieve breakthrough mainstream status until his fourth collection, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", but with this collection, he earned the grateful admiration of some of the most erudite readers of "humor", a genre that includes such canonical figures as James Thurber and Woody Allen, and yet remains something of a sub-genre for many readers (and collectors) , who consider it "light entertainment". There is a light touch in Sedaris&#39; acerbic, "spot-on", and "laugh-out-loud" pieces about America, but they say so much more about the real America as seen by Sedaris through his completely dysfunctional Greek-immigrant family as well as through his singular perspective as the funniest gay man in America (some would say the funniest man in America) . An important point: Most of the devoted followers of his books, live appearances, and recordings are heterosexual. He now writes almost exclusively for The New Yorker Magazine, and has been criticized by militant gays for making fun of the gay American subculture, sparing no one, especially himself. Life, as always, has come full circle. Sedaris&#39; mainstream success has made him an American cultural phenomenon, making his sexual orientation irrelevant (only he can make it relevant again) . "Sedaris&#39; touch is so assured that the final impression is not comedy but pathos" (Dale Peck) . A brilliant debut, this is a "must-have" title for David Sedaris collectors. <B><i> This copy is very prominently, hilariously, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by the author: "Women. They&#39;ll suck the fucking paper off a joint, but when old Papa Bear needs a little BJ action...David Sedaris". There is no recipient named. Sedaris is a genuine rarity among superstar-writers: He spends time with every single person who has taken the trouble of going to his reading and waiting patiently in line (which are "circle-around-the-block" long) to get his or her book signed. He writes lengthy, personalized inscriptions to those who want them and has been known to sign into the wee hours of the morning. We do not know of another American writer who sincerely bonds with (rather than keeps his distance from) his readers as Sedaris does. This title is now highly collectible. This is the single most beautiful signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing we have ever found and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID SEDARIS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0316779407.

Sixty Years of Quacking - Limited Edition Print (Signed)

1994. Print. New. Lithograph print by Carl Barks on Acid-free Paper. SIGNED NUMBERED PRINT. Size: 7" x 9" (178mm x 229mm). "Hi, I&#39;m Donald Duck!" is quite special for a number of reasons. If one were to overlook a faint shakiness from the hand of the Old Duck Man, this image could be blown up to a vertical, twenty-four sheet billboard and the whole world would salute as they passed by, chanting in unison, "This is the definitive Donald Duck! May he live to be six thousand years old!" When it was duplicated into a fine art bone china porcelain by the masters at Connoisseur of Malvern, an English ceramics studio, the sculptor had to return to his modelling several times just to get the stance and "bone structure" of the duck right: a deceptively difficult task. Any artist who has tried to draw the duck runs into the same problems. Donald Duck may be anthropomorphic -- talking and acting like a human being -- but, nonetheless, he&#39;s a duck&#133; walks like one, originally talked like one (in animation), is built like one and stands like a duck! Just study the figure closely: notice how the head and neck connect -- not like a man -- and how the legs come out of his feathered torso -- not like a man! Carl Barks&#39; 1950s model sheet of how to draw the duck is the best ever done and is still copied today. "Hi, I&#39;m Donald Duck!" is in The Fine Art of Walt Disney&#39;s Donald Duck, reproduced as Colour Plate #88, Carl Barks&#39; tenth painting of 1975, chronological #101. It was one of only two minis done slightly smaller than 10"x 8" -- painted to make them more affordable to collectors commissioning his work. (Barks carefully calculated time spent doing an oil painting by measuring his work by the square inch. This oil was originally sold -- amazingly, in retrospect -- by the Old Duck Man in 1975 for a mere $150. Today, it&#39;s worth at least $25,000 - $30,000!) Chronology: The painting was published on the title page of the Gladstone comic book, Walt Disney&#39;s Comics and Stories #625 (June 1998); plus five Barks pencil concepts for the bone china figurine were reproduced on the Table of Contents page, the figurine itself appearing on the back cover. "Hi, I&#39;m Donald Duck!" was printed by the Black Box of Chicago, image size 8 7/8"x 6 5/8" on 12 1/4"x9 1/2" Opalesque Keramique, a paper constructed of 100% cotton fibre for strength and longevity, guaranteed not to fade under normal and stable storage conditions for hundreds of years. Limited and signed from an edition of 595.
