Thurber's Dogs. Suite for Orchestra after Drawings by James Thurber. Movement VI: Hunting Hounds. Autograph musical manuscript sketches in condensed score of almost the entire final movement of the work, consisting of music for sections B-N, i.e., pp. 111-137 of the published full score

. Folio, ca. 356 x 278 mm. Unbound. 9 leaves notated in pencil on one side of each leaf of 18-stave AZTEC C-18 music manuscript paper. A working manuscript, with erasures, alterations and cancellations. Together with: A copy of the published full score of the movement, i.e., pp. 107-138, and a 1-1/2 page printed commentary by the composer discussing the background of the work and briefly describing the music: "I should say, however, that as I was working on the last movement, I found myself thinking as much about the fox as about the hunting hounds. This, coupled with the fact that I recently acquired a recording of background music from the old movie serials that I used to go to as a kid, probably accounts for the quite ungentlemanly, almost lurid quality of the chase music.". "Thurber's Dogs was commissioned for the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus and the Thurber House to commemorate the 100th birthday anniversary of author James Thurber. It was completed on August 13, 1994. The first performances took place on December 2 and 4, 1994; the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus was conducted, respectively, by the composer and Timothy Russell, the orchestra's Music Director. The work has been recorded by the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus for release in the fall of 1995." From Mr. Schickele's commentary accompanying the manuscript A composition student of Roy Harris, Darius Milhaud, Persichetti and Bergsma, "Schickele has become the leading American musical satirist, giving concerts throughout the USA in which he lectures, sings, conducts and plays as guest soloist with symphony orchestras or with his own ensemble. The humorous compositions range from outrageous parodies, such as the cantata Iphigenia in Brooklyn, to ingenious combinations of antithetical styles, as in Blaues Gras (Bluegrass Cantata), and are full of surprising violations of familiar styles, musical forms and phrase structures, harmonic conventions and orchestration. Schickele's commentaries and his mock-scholarly The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach... juxtapose incongruities from contemporary culture with relatively austere academic and classical canons, and are reflective of the eclectic musical menu of the modern American public. One of the most widely performed and published of contemporary composers working in many different styles...". Deane L. Root in Grove online Thurber (1894-1961), one of the foremost American humorists of the 20th century, had a great love of dogs and included them in many of his drawings, calling them "sound creatures in a crazy world." www.thurberhouse.org

        Collection of Roller Derby Posters

11 1 2 x 17 1 2 original posters. Collection of seventeen Roller Derby posters from the Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby. Near fine. The Women’s Roller Derby Collection contains a large range of artistic styles: horror, punk music, 60s advertising, underground comics, classic B-movies. Other influences include surrealism, politics, photorealism and Saturday morning cartoons, art of the 1980s, cereal box art, MAD magazine, “dark designs,” tattoo and hot-rod inspired works. One artist explained that hot rod/rockability culture explains derby’s current popularity. Visual cues from the past infused in a new modern sensibility – in other words, using the familiar with the new to create a sort or revisionist visual history and mystique for roller derby. PROVENANCE: From Artist’s Matt Traughber’s personal collection. Roller Derby is unique as a sport, as a structure and as a social phenomenon. Over the last two decades, a new evolution in women’s athletics has been taking hold across the United States. Fueled by adrenaline and dedication, with roots back to the early 20th century, women’s roller derby is making a frantic comeback on a grass-roots and national level. State to state, leagues are forming for the love of the skate. Skill and devotion set the pace for an exciting and empowering display of athletic skill and prowess in a physically aggressively all-woman sport. The famed artist Robert Williams coined the tern “lowbrow” to describe the American Art Movement that was taking hold in the late 1980s and early 90s. Williams who’d come into his own by working for car builder Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and hooking up with many from the Zap Comix crew (Robert Crumb, Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, and S. Clay Wilson) was gaining ground with highly sexualized oil-rich tales about sex, violence, drugs and car culture. When Williams started Juxtapos Art & Culture magazine in 1994, his purpose was to unearth underground and outlaw artists like himself. Instead, he created a world where artists, illustrators and pop culture pundits all wanted to live. This new art movement shunned the conceptual and abstract, embracing art school groupthink. Instead, it was inspired by B-movies, horror and science fiction films, comic books, tattoos, hot rods, pin up art and pop culture. Roller derby, a grassroots movement, embraces the same ethics and values held by Williams. Its DIY spirit and talent, which might not be generally accepted by mainstream, thrive in roller derby art. Derby is the meeting ground where these influences merge with athletics; roller derby can be considered an offshoot of an already thriving subculture and it continues, as does lowbrow, to seep into mainstream.

        THE MARX SISTERS.

London: Hamish Hamilton, [1994]. - First edition. Author's first book. Tiny bump to lower rear corner, else fine in price-clipped dust jacket. The death of one of three elderly sisters doesn't look quite right, but why would anyone want to kill her? Meredith Winterbottom lived in an undeveloped section of London surrounded by her collection of old books, and her long standing neighbors--mainly refugees from the horrors of Central Europe in the thirties. What possible motive could there be? Could elderly Meredith Winterbottom really have been killed for the politics of another age? A closing bookshop, unpublished letters of Karl Marx, inscribed first editions of Marx's books, and the possible existence of an unsuspected fourth volume of Das Kapital are all elements surrounding the deaths of the great granddaughters of Karl Marx. Introduces Det. Sgt. Kathy Kolla and Det. C.I. David Brock to investigate the reasons. Recommended. John Creasey Award nominee. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Good Will of a Flower

(Walker, Anne); Dickinson, Emily. The Good Will of a Flower. Paris, 1994. Unique artist book copy 1 of 1. (4 1/2 x 5 1/2"). Gouache, pastel, ink. Patterned wood boards with onlaid painted cloth strip. Unfolds to 36". Clamshell case with paper label. Anne Walker describes her books as "Folded paintings." These books are designed as continuous accordion-like scrolls, each individual page has its own composition, but is integrated into the "folded painting" in a progression that slowly changes colors and moods. Most of her books involve poetry by what Walker calls her "living and phantom collaborators." Anne Walker is a native New Englander, who emigrated to France in 1955 after graduating from Smith College. She took up woodcuts in 1956 in Paris, and etching and aquatint in 1968. She began making gouache and pastel books in 1989, turning away from printmaking. She has had exhibitions in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States. Walker explains her transition from the precision of printmaking to the more abstract techniques she uses in her gouache and pastel books as a change in her world view. Her initial attraction to printmaking "was a way of creating stability using solid materials that supposed a contained and precise technique that was reassuring in itself. Once released from this need because of being able to accept (more or less) that the world will always be a fragile place to live in, I feel freer and happier with what I am doing now." Many of Walker's books are closely associated with poetry. She has worked with contemporary poets, often asking them to hand-letter their poems into her books, and she has used poems from late poets such as Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, Thoreau, and William Carlos Williams. If the poet is no longer living, or if a contemporary prefers not to write in the book themselves, she uses a simple calligraphy, so that the writing remains visually neutral.         Collection of Roller Derby Posters

11 1 2 x 17 1 2 original posters. Collection of seventeen Roller Derby posters from the Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby. Near fine. The Women’s Roller Derby Collection contains a large range of artistic styles: horror, punk music, 60s advertising, underground comics, classic B-movies. Other influences include surrealism, politics, photorealism and Saturday morning cartoons, art of the 1980s, cereal box art, MAD magazine, “dark designs,” tattoo and hot-rod inspired works. One artist explained that hot rod/rockability culture explains derby’s current popularity. Visual cues from the past infused in a new modern sensibility – in other words, using the familiar with the new to create a sort or revisionist visual history and mystique for roller derby.& PROVENANCE: From Artist’s Matt Traughber’s personal collection. Instead, it was inspired by B-movies, horror and science fiction films, comic books, tattoos, hot rods, pin up art and pop culture.& Roller derby, a grassroots movement, embraces the same ethics and values held by Williams.
