Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, The War Papers, Volume 2, Never Surrender, May 1940 - December 1940

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1994 - The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the British first edition of the second volume of The War Papers, which are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill's Official Biography. This volume contains documents from May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries, through December 1940, with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain, but nonetheless weak, isolated, and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. This British first edition is considerably more scarce and highly sought than the U.S. first edition, which is similar in appearance. These Heinemann War Papers volumes - particularly Volumes 1 & 2 - seem destined to rise inexorably in price just like the now quite expensive Volume V Companions. This copy is very good in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and minimal wear confined to extremities, but a bit concave at the upper spine from the weight of the massive text block. The contents are nonetheless bright and clean internally with no spotting, no previous ownership marks, and very light soiling to the text block edges. The dust jacket is unclipped and entirely complete with no losses or tears. We note light sunning to the jacket spine, minor wrinkling at the spine ends, and some creasing to the edge of the unclipped front flap. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302f2 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        THE MARX SISTERS

London: Hamish Hamilton, [1994]., 1994. First edition. Signed. Author's first book. Tiny bump to lower front corner, else fine in dust jacket. The death of one of three elderly sisters doesn't look quite right, but why would anyone want to kill her? Meredith Winterbottom lived in an undeveloped section of London surrounded by her collection of old books, and her long standing neighbors--mainly refugees from the horrors of Central Europe in the thirties. What possible motive could there be? Could elderly Meredith Winterbottom really have been killed for the politics of another age? A closing bookshop, unpublished letters of Karl Marx, inscribed first editions of Marx's books, and the possible existence of an unsuspected fourth volume of Das Kapital are all elements surrounding the deaths of the great granddaughters of Karl Marx. Introduces Det. Sgt. Kathy Kolla and Det. C.I. David Brock to investigate the reasons. Recommended. John Creasey Award nominee.

        CHARLES M. RUSSELL, SCULPTOR

Amon Carter Museum, [1994]., 1994. First edition. One of the special edition limited to 250 copies, bound in leather and signed by the author. This is copy 151. Dark green full leather, C. M, Russell and buffalo skull embossed on front cover and titles stamped in silver gilt on the spine, tan endpapers, xi - 400 pp., foreword, preface and acknowledgments, abbreviations for frequently cited sources, illustrated, (many in color), appendices, index. This rare limited edition, is the definitive book on Charles Russell and his bronzes. Written by the director of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, this book is 400 pages that tell the story of the bronzes owned by Mr. and Mrs. Russell which were eventually purchased by the Amon Carter Museum. It contains a well-researched biography of Mr. and Mrs. Russell and lists details of every bronze cast by the Russells including foundry details and casts made. Russell was as skillful in sculpture as he was with paint and pen. Throughout his life he modeled wax animals and clay and plaster figures for his friends and family, but in the last twenty years of his career Russell also created forty-six more formal works for casting in bronze. This study is the first comprehensive examination of Russell's work as a sculptor. With reproductions not only of Russell's bronzes but of many of his painted wax and plaster models, this is an essential volume for connoisseurs and collectors of western art and for those who simply admire Russell's work. Fine copy, housed in the original cloth slipcase

As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 88 pages. Collection of photographs, presented as an Artist Book. One of Christian Boltanski&#39;s greatest achievements. Limited Slipcased Edition of 77 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition of 2000 copies. They have the same ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Christian Boltanski: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Art and text by Christian Boltanski. 9.5 X 5 inch original silver-gelatin print laid into the book. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. In publisher&#39;s cardboard slipcase. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, one of Christian Boltanski&#39;s seminal books. These photo-ID&#39;s of German kids were originally taken by Hilmar Pabel between 1946 and 1947, right after the Second World War. The Red Cross (whose iconic symbol Boltanski adopts for the cover) reproduced the photographs along with characteristics of the children, and distributed them in a concerted and noble effort to find their parents. In fact, both children and parents were missing (their parents seek these children), as a result of the war and its catastrophic consequences for a defeated Germany. This humanitarian project happens to be the quintessential subject for Christian Boltanski. His art is about remembering that goes beyond this and becomes "imagining", that is, a deeper kind of "finding" that art uniquely makes possible. "In devastated post-war Germany, thousands of children were displaced or homeless. They did not know how to find their parents, and in some cases, did not even know their own name or age. When I look at the faces of these lost children, I find myself trying to imagine what has become of them. They have become part of the post-war history of Germany with all its changes. I should like to find them again. They are about my own age, and their history is similar in some ways to mine, to ours" (Christian Boltanski). "I should like to find them again". This reminds us why Boltanski will be remembered as one of the most profound artists of our time, whose definitive pronouncement remains: "I am for an art that is sentimental. I want to make people cry. Art should create emotions. The task is to create a formal work that is, at the same time, recognized by the spectator as a sentimentally charged object. Everyone will recognize their own history, their own world, which is more felt than perceived. The artist is someone who holds a mirror and those who look in the mirror recognize themselves but each one sees a different image". An absolute "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. <b><i> This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in ink-pen by Christian Boltanski. It comes with a 9.5 X 5 inch original silver-gelatin print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in ink-pen on verso by the artist. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 77 plates, 1 original print. One of the greatest living artists. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 392907804X.

Von dem greüwlichen Laster der Trunckenhayt ...[Augsburg, Heinrich Steiner, 1533?]. 4to. With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 x 12 cm) on title-page showing an elaborate banquet and a vomitting man, by H. Weiditz (the Petrarca master), decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. Early 19th-century shell-marbled boards.

Goedeke II, 10,6; Hayn Gotendorf II, 357; P. Hayden-Roy, The inner world and the outer world: a biography of Sebastian Franck (1994), pp. 19-25; Kaczerowsky, Sebastian Franck Bibliographie (1976), A 4 (5 copies); VD16 F2142 (2 copies); not in Vicaire; Adams; Fairfax Murray. One of at least three and possibly five editions that VD16 lists under 1533 of "On the horrible vice of drunkenness", a treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages, probably first published in 1531. Kaczerowsky and others regard the present edition as the first, published in 1528. It is also of medical interest, since Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness. He attributed a variety of social ills to alcohol, including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. All of his works were placed on the index of prohibited books in 1559.Most of the editions with the 1531 date have 32 leaves, expanded to 38 leaves in one with the 1531 date and those with the 1533 date. Since the present edition also has 38 leaves, it seems likely to have been printed in 1533. With 5 pages of bibliographical notes in German on 3 leaves inserted before the title-page, the first 2, dated 1857, signed by the owner Friedrich Latendorf (1831-1898), who later edited Sebastian Franck's erste namenlose Sprichwörtersammlung vom Jahre 1532 in getreuen Abdruck, 1876. They discuss the dates and order of the first editions and issues. Further with the name of the owner Howard Osgood (1831-1911), professor at Rochester Theological Seminary in New York, on the title-page; the embossed stamp of the Rochester Theological Seminary Library on the title-page and the stamp of its Ambrose Swasey Library on the foot edge. With the inserted leaves crudely attached to the title-page with tape in the gutter margin, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor foxing.

Borba de Moraes, p. 826 ("This French edition is much sought after"); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 362; Leclerc 1994; Rodrigues 2288; Sabin 89451; Tiele, Bibl. 1030; Tiele, Mém. 70; Warnsinck, p. 178; not in Rahir; Willems. First and only edition of the French translation of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (pp. 117-172) with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. In 1614 the VOC commissioned Spilbergen to sail to the Moluccas with nearly 700 men. Despite the commercial nature of his expedition, Spilbergen's six vessels were heavily armed, anticipating encounters with silver-laden Spanish vessels. Spilbergen spent two years calling at various Spanish and Portuguese ports along both coasts of South America, failing to capture any great amounts of silver or silk from Manila, but burning several settlements and emerging triumphant from a naval skirmish just south of Lima.By contrast, Le Maire's less mercenary expedition resulted in important discoveries; his exploration of Tierra del Fuego and the Tuamotou Archipelago called into doubt the existence of a massive southern continent, providing a catalyst for Tasman's discovery of New Zealand and Australia. The two expeditions crossed paths in the Dutch East Indies in 1616. Spilbergen's book is also remarkable as an early document of Dutch voyages to the Brazilian coast, especially valuable for its detailed account of the stay in the Ilha Grande, from October 1614 to January 1615, and in São Vicente in 1615. This edition includes three important additions to the text of the journal: (1) a description of the government of Peru and Chile by the Spanish Pedro de Madriga (pp. 63-74), (2) an account on the Molluccas by Apolonus Schot from Middelburg (pp. 96-107), and a description of the fortresses, artillery, ships, etc. in the service of the Dutch East India Company in July 1616 (pp. 107-115).With early owner's inscriptions and a few manuscript annotations in the margin, probably from the 17th- and the 19th-centuries. Lacking the world map, but including the double-page plate 21 showing Solor, Amboyna, Mount Ganapus and the island Nera, often lacking. Washed with a brush, leaving light brown steaks on most leaves, and further with an occasional leaf foxed or smudged and an occasional minor tear. Otherwise a good copy of an extraordinary journal.

The book must have been stored in sheets for some time before binding, since the wormholes run through leaf A2 of most quires without affecting the other leaves. Slight browning throughout, with the title-page and its conjugate cut down and the margins expertly restored, along with the gutter margin of, worm holes repaired in 7 plates and 4 leaves of text, slightly affecting the printed image in 3 plates. Lacking a blank leaf (P4) before the drop-title for Le Maire's voyage, mistakenly counted as pp.119-120 in the continuous pagination. Binding worn and rebacked, with some minor stains. Scarce, first Latin edition of a description of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen, Schouten and Le Maire.

Orthopädische Operationslehre. -Teil: Band. 2/1 Becken und untere Extremität / Bearb. von R. Bauer ... Abb. in Einzeldarst. von G. Spitzer ...

Stuttgart : Thieme. Umfang/Format: XV, 701 Seiten : zahlreiche Illustrationen und graph. Darst.
