        The Wine-Dark Sea.

New York, W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. 1993 - Advance Reader's Copy. 14 x 21cm. 261 pages. Original softcover. Excellent condition. Signed by the author Patrick O'Brian on the titlepage. Though the Jack Aubrey-Stephen Maturin books can be profitably read separately, as fans know, together they read as one long, wonderful novel. This 16th installment (following The Truelove ) is no doubt the best chapter yet. In the early 1800s, Bluff Jack, captain of the privateer Surprise , steers his frigate across the Pacific to South America, around Cape Horn and into the Atlantic, taking French and American prizes, fighting off a Yankee Man of War and suffering dire eye and leg wounds for his trouble. Subtle Stephen, ship's doctor and British intelligence agent, almost pulls off a coup in Peru and must escape across the Andes, losing some toes to frostbite for his efforts. Favorite characters reappear here: Killick, Jack's crabby steward; Sarah and Emily Sweeting, precocious Melanesian waifs attached to Maturin's sick-berth; Sam, Jack's illegitimate black son and rising Churchman. The naval actions are bang-on and bang-up--fast, furious and bloody--and the Andean milieu is as vivid as the shipboard scenes. As usual, readers can revel in the symbiotic friendship of Jack and Stephen, who make for a marvelous duo, whether in their violin and cello duets or in their sharp dialogue.         The Death And Life of Great American Cities

New York: The Modern Library, 1993. First Modern Library edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Jane Jacobs on the half title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Uncommon signed. The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning. . . . [It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments." Robert Caro has cited Jacobs' book as the strongest influence on The Power Broker, his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Robert Moses.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, The War Papers, Volume 1, At the Admiralty, September 1939 - May 1940, Volume 2, Never Surrender, May 1940 - December 1940, and Volume 3, The Ever-Widening War, 1941

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1993. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a set of British first editions of the three War Papers volumes, the final volumes of Winston ChurchillÂ’s Official Biography completed before the death of ChurchillÂ’s official biographer, Sir Martin Gilbert. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but substantially completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - nineteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today, although the three War Papers document volumes were the last completed by Gilbert before his death. The three volumes of The War Papers were published by Heinemann between 1993 and 2000. The first volume contains documents from the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 to May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the Low Countries. The second volume contains documents from May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the Low Countries, through December 1940, with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain, but nonetheless weak, isolated, and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. The third volume contains documents from 1941, which ended with the attack on Pearl Harbor, formal entry of the United States into the war, and Churchill addressing both a joint session of the U.S. Congress, as well as the Canadian Parliament. There were both British and U.S. editions. These British first editions are considerably more scarce (particularly Volumes 1 & 2) and highly sought than the U.S. first editions, which are similar in appearance. This set of all three features unread, near fine or better volumes in near fine or better dust jackets. The red cloth bindings of all three volumes are square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only trivial shelf wear to extremities. The contents of all three volumes are crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Even the page edges remain immaculately bright and clean. The dust jackets are crisp, clean, and complete, unclipped with no loss or appreciable wear. The sole defect noted is modest sunning to the Volume 2 spine. All three dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302f1, A303f2, A302f3.

Facsimile Manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería

Madrid: Testimonio Compañía Editorial, 1993. 16 facsimile hand written pages with diagrams and three fold out diagrams of Palenque. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in velum with black label and gilt lettering to cover. Testimonio's Tabula Americae. Limited to 980 copies of which this is 169. Spanish artillery Captain Antonio del Río’s (ca. 1745-ca. 1789) discovery of tangible evidence of an amazingly rich Maya past and this printed report were the beginning of the study of this truly lost civilization. In May 1786 upon the order of the Spanish Crown, Governor and Brigadier General of the Royal Audencia of Guatemala, Don José Estachería sent Río to Chiapas to investigate rumors of an ancient city near Santo Domingo del Palenque and determine the origin of its inhabitants. Rio was preceded by other visitors to Palenque, the most recent being two brief forays by José Antonio Calderón, a local official, and Spanish architect Antonio Bernasconi, whose sparse observations prompted the order for the full-scale investigation by Río. The Spanish captain made up for his lack of antiquarian training with his zeal, hiring seventy-nine Maya locals to assault with crowbars and axes the abandoned, tree-engulfed, seventh-century city of Palenque. In his report Río describes and comments on the hieroglyphs he saw. Río sent his manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería, and it was preserved in Madrid. Almendáriz’s original drawings were recently found in a private European collection and published: Estampas de Palenque (not included here), Madrid: Testimonio, 1993. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the author’s manuscript and Waldeck’s drawings re-emerged in a still mysterious manner to be published in England. Publisher Henry Berthoud bought the manuscript from a mysterious Dr. McQuy (McQueen?) in Jamaica at the end of April 1822. Capitalizing on public interest in American indigenous cultures as well as in Romantic ruins, Berthoud published Rio’s work in hopes of a popular bestseller, which might otherwise have been lost.Condition:A Fine copy.

        Americans

1993. Signed. FRANK, Robert. The Americans. New York—Zurich—Berlin: Scalo, 1993. Oblong quarto, original black paper boards, original dust jacket. $2800.First Scalo edition of Robert Frank’s masterpiece, first published in France in 1958, signed on the half title by Frank, this handsome edition issued in association with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, which in 1994 honored Frank with “the first National Gallery exhibition devoted to a living photographer” (Looking In), containing Jack Kerouac’s introductory essay on his friend’s work, which first appeared in the 1959 American edition, with 83 full-page photogravures.Robert Frank “forever changed the course of 20th-century photography (Looking In, xix). His magnum opus, The Americans, first published in France in 1958 and in the United States in 1959, remains “the most renowned photobook of all… None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank’s masterpiece” (Parr & Badger I:237). In Jack Kerouac’s memorable preface to his friend’s photobook, he wrote, “Robert Frank… he sucked a sad poem out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world.” The Swiss-born photographer traveled across America from 1955 to 1965, creating images that revolutionized photography with their “irreverence and a dark humor… their grainy, out-of-focus effects, their tilting perspectives and over-the-shoulder half views” (New York Times). “From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters… ‘With these photographs,’ he later wrote, ‘I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal…’ Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography” (Roth, 150). “First Scalo edition” stated on copyright page. Published in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, which organized a major retrospective of Frank’s work in 1994, titled Robert Frank, Moving Out. It was “the first National Gallery exhibition devoted to a living photographer” (Looking In, 374). Issued in both cloth and wrappers, no priority established. A fine signed copy.
