The Albert W. Sadler Papers: An Archive of Correspondence and Documents relating to Buddhism and Japanese Culture

[New York 1993 - An important collection of correspondence, including annotated scholarly articles, typescripts, and related documents, from the library of Albert Sadler, an influential author and scholar of Buddhism, Japanese culture, and comparative religion. The collection features letters from several leading literary figures: Joseph Campbell, Gary Snyder, Alan Watts, the English poet James Kirkup, and New York State Poet Laureate Jean Valentine. Also included are letters and related material from several prominent Buddhist scholars and cultural figures, including Shojun Bando (Shin Buddhist priest and scholar at Otani University, Kyoto), Beate Gordon (former Asia Society Director of Performing Arts and feminist heroine of Japanese women's rights), Matthias Eder (founder and editor of *Asian Folklore Studies*), and graphic artist Mayumi Oda (famous for her silk screen prints of Japanese women and goddesses). The collection contains over 50 letters, about 25 books and periodicals, and several dozen articles, typescripts, and related documents (including photographs) and research notes. Much of the material has annotations and notes by Sadler, and dates from the late 1950s through mid-1980s, when he was rofessor of philosophy and religion at the University of Vermont (1960s), and Sarah Lawrence College in New York (1970s-1980s). Sadler was a prolific writer and lecturer, and "old-fashioned" teacher and scholar, who did not hesitate to criticize friends like Alan Watts, associating him with "the Zen freaks and the Beat Generation and Allen Ginsberg and the Krishna people," while at the same time acknowledging that it was they who "built the market" of contemporary student interest in comparative religion and philosophy: "it is possible that American youth are ready for something new, and something subtler now. Not to replace, but to enrich."There are three letters from Watts dating from 1958-59, in which he discusses Sadler's questions regarding an upcoming address he agreed to deliver, and in which he describes "having experimented with both mescaline and lysergic acid," and concludes: "They may have some therapeutic value, but, for me, they are simply nothing like a *satori*." Joseph Campbell in a 1972 letter discusses his relationship with Alan Watts when he was living in Millbrook, California, and Gary Snyder in a letter from 1974, admits to sharing with Sadler: "the same complex of feelings about that complex man, Alan Watts." Both Campbell and Snyder praise Sadler's writings on Japanese culture.Beate Gordon at the Asia Society in New York, also praises Sadler's writings: "I've just read your essay on Sufism, and Music from Iran, and I think it's just marvelous, beautifully written, and very interesting." She and Sadler collaborated on an Edo Festival of Music and Pantomime presented at Lincoln Center in December 1971. Shojun Bando, a revered Shin Buddhist priest and Japanese scholar, in seven long letters from 1965-1978, writes at length about current scholarly debates, his work on Shin Buddhism, and his work on the English translation of Shinran's magnum opus, the *Kyogyoshinsho*. He also shares with Sadler the news of his marriage, and of the student movement: "Our council room is now being occupied by radical students with a red flag at the window ."An historically important and compelling archive, containing a wide choice of correspondence and documents from several important Buddhist scholars and Buddhist inspired artists, from the library of a leading scholar in the field. A detailed list is available.

A Collection of 25 Candid Photos of William S. Burroughs

1993 - An archive of 25 candid color photos of William S. Burroughs taken on September 5, 1993. Each measuring 6" x 4". Fine. The photos include shots of Burroughs around his home in Lawrence, Kansas: by himself reading an art book, sprinkling food into an outdoor fish pond, and fiddling with a drum stick. There are also several group shots with Burroughs that include his business manager, James Grauerholz; poet and performance artist, John Giorno; and several other unidentified people. Giorno was a former companion of Andy Warhol and starred in his experimental 1965 film, *Sleep*. Giorno met Burroughs and Brion Gysin in the mid-1960s and was inspired by their cut-up and montage techniques. He later toured with Burroughs in the 1970s for a series of poetry readings and they remained lifelong friends. The stamp of his artist collective, "Giorno Poetry Systems," can be found on the verso of each photo. A pleasing collection of personal images of this legendary writer.

THE BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA Volume II Frogmouths, Swallows, Swifts, Martins, Bee-Eaters, Pardalotes, Crow Shrikes, Fly-catchers, Kingfishers

Melbourne: Hill House, 1993. Limited facsimile edition in original box and packaging. Original Japanese Saifu cloth gilt; 104 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. One of a series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Remains in original box, unopened, Binding fine, contents clean and tight, unmarked. A fine copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock. A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK. We hold the full set of Birds of Australia in stock. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. New/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Gould. Elephant Folio.

Albumen print, carte de visite format, 90 x 60 mm, on mount 104 x 65 mm; numeral "9" inscribed in ink in contemporary hand at lower margin recto of mount; verso blank; the albumen print in fine condition with rich tonal range. We can locate only two other copies of this image in public collections. One - an example with somewhat gaudy watercolour embellishment - is contained in the Archer Family Album in the John Oxley Library; it is reproduced as Plate 1 in Michael Aird's Portraits of our elders(Brisbane : Queensland Museum, 1993). The other is held in the Pitt Rivers Museum (1998.307.387). The Pitt Rivers example was probably collected around 1868 by J.F. Berini, one of numerous travellers known to have sent photographs of indigenous subjects to the Hamburg studio of the photographers and publishers Carl and Frederick Dammann, and it bears a contemporary inscription verso: "King (Chief), living not far from Brisbane, Australia, who although in an entirely savage condition was a patron and friend of the natural scientist Dr. Berini on several occasions. He gave Berini particularly a secure escort on his way to areas never before explored or entered by a white man." This imposing portrait, photographed from a low angle in order to invest its subject with power and gravitas, was most likely taken in the studio of John Watson, Daniel Marquis or Thomas Bevan. The photographer has purposely composed the sitter in the manner of a classical statue - we are instantly reminded of the Roman god Neptune or his Greek counterpart, Poseidon - with Tidy's three items of regalia prominent: his breastplate (sometimes referred to as a king plate or gorget), which would have been given to him by local white authorities or settlers; a crown, perhaps made from tin, and also made for him by Europeans; and a spear - the only one of the three objects of indigenous manufacture. Although it is tempting for us to conclude that Tidy's dignity transcends the mocking nature of the accoutrements bestowed upon him by white society, this interpretation of the portrait may be a little simplistic: it is not for us to judge whether or not these symbols carried significant meaning for Tidy, and in fact his expression may connote a fierce pride in wearing them, rather than a defiant attitude in the face of derision.

Sylva anachoretica Aegypti et Palaestinae. Figuris aeneis et brevibus vitarum elogiis expressa. Abrahamo Blommaert inventore. Boetio a Bolswert sculptore.Antwerp, Hendrik Aertssens for the author, 1619. 4to. With 2 engraved title-pages and two series of 25 numbered engravings by Boetius à Bolswert after Abraham Bloemaert (14 x 9 cm), lacking the engraved frontispiece. Contemporary vellum.

Brunet I, col. 976; M.G. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons (1993), vol. 1, pp. 171-183 and vol. 2, figs. 262-317; cf. Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) II, p. 66, nos. 355-378 & 379-403 (1610 ed.), III, p. 63, nos. 96-119 (“1612” ed.). First edition published in book form, with letterpress text and a new title, of two series of engravings depicting male and female saints and hermits. They were made by the notable Dutch engraver Boetius à Bolswert (ca. 1585-1633) after the well-known Dutch painter and draughtsman Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651), with short letterpress biographies by the Jesuit hagiographer Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629).The prints were originally published ca. 1610 as two separate series by Boetius à Bolswert himself, containing only the name of the saints as in the present state. A second state of the plates is known with a two-line distich below the prints, usually dated 1612, but according to Roethlisberger these may actually have been published after the present 1619 publication in book form. With an inscription on title-page ("Donum R.P. Heriberti Rosweydi Soc. Jesu."), saying the book was donated by the Jesuit author of the text, Heribert Rosweyde. Furthermore with a bookplate, collector's stamp and several early owner's inscriptions, two of them struck through. Lacking the dedication and engraved frontispiece (which should follow the letter-press general title-page). Slightly browned throughout and some foxing and minor soiling to the outer edges. Binding slightly warped and with some minor damage to the spine, but otherwise good.
