The Lovers Song-book (with the Hermes engravings)

Newtown: Gwasg Gregynog, 1993 18 pp. Designed and printed by David Esslemont at Gregynog, the compositor was David Vickers, an edition limited to 350 numbered copies set in Monotype Bembo and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. ACCOMPANIED by 10 wood engravings by Gertrude Hermes. Hermes made her first wood engraving in 1922 & soon established herself as one of the leading British wood engravers of the time. She was married to Blair Hughes-Stanton, and when he was appointed resident artist at the Gregynog Press in 1930, the family moved to Wales. In 1933 WH Davies was becoming concerned over the non appearance of his collection of poems which had been lying at the Press for 2 years. (an un-illustrated edition had appeared had appeared in 1928 but this was best forgotten) They were reluctant to commission either McCance or Hughes-Stanton, finally the Press commissioned Gertrude Hermes to illustrate the 30 poems for Davies - The Lovers Song-Book. She produced 10 engravings, each one inspired by three of the poems. The engravings were thought at the time to be a little explicit, with the result that they were not used, at that time, now 60 years later Gwasg Gregynog have made them available. The engravings are hand printed on Japanese Gampi Vellum hand made paper in an edition of 100. A Paul Delrue Custom Binding at his new bindery in Ruthin, North Wales, 2007/7. Bound in crimson goatskin by Harmatan of Northampton in his new Tudor Style. Pages are guarded to make for comfortable opening as the book is rather slim. New matching red endpapers. Special design colours, black, red, together with a mixed blue (tie-dye). He was moved by the beautiful Davies Poems and his design is Free and Open, with Love all around, with the design of birds flying from the front cover to the back. The leather design was inlaid, as it was important that it kept moving and light with open air. It suites the rather long narrow shape of the book. It has been housed in an up and over box with warm red suede lined interior. It has been covered in black and red buckram. The title like that of the special was titled in gold on the front protective box and titled on the spine with hand letters. The wood engravings were guarded together with a quarter black leather goatskin with matching red cloth sides and titled in gold to the front board. The 10 wood engravings by Gertrude Hermes are limited and were printed in a different format which is why it was quite impossible to bind the plates into the special, as it would have spoilt the engravings by ruthless trimming. Both the special design binding together with the wood engravings are kept together in a black buckram slipcase with the title at the foot in real gold. The commission took 200 hours to complete! Fantastic to say the least!

Michael Feingold's Words are "songs" from the end of the world, where there are no more people, only empty landscapes. Alien visitors come to Earth and hear these "songs" without people in the barren landscape and try to understand what humans had done to themselves. This powerful and moving book has been nominated for the prestigious Brenden Gill Award given by the Municipal Arts Society of New York City. This is Mr. Feingold's first published book of poetry and as such is an important literary first edition in its own right. Fine. See an Image.

To the Blue Wall. Etchings by T. Kurahara

Vincent FitzGerald & Company New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1993. One of only 50 copies, all on Rives BFK and Dieu Donne' handmade paper, each signed and numbered by the artist. Page size: 9 inches x 9 inches. Bound by Zahra Partovi: wood maple covers by Dennis FitzGerald, Coptic- style binding, opening to full circle, housed in custom box by BookLab, Inc., fine. The etchings were editioned by Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald at The Printmaking Workshop. The letterpress in linotype Palatino is by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly. T. Kurahara, well-known artist, is Professor of Painting at Pratt. This is a very beautiful book, with a strong color presence that comes as a shock upon opening the austere maple binding! The artists says, "Red is always life, bright yellow presence. Blue is water: oceans, sky and air. Silver illuminates; brown fashipns matter and greens pass beyond spring. Greys give us balance; the darks are mysteries, the tones variable; intensities reveal breath." See an Image.

        The Parthenon Pediments

Vincent FitzGerald & Co. New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 1993. Portfolio of etchings, one of 25 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist Judith Turner on the reverse, all on BFK Rives paper and paper from Paul Wong, Dieu Donne Papermill. Page size: 30 inches by 15 inches; 6 leaves. Bound: loose in green paper portfolio with the title in silver gilt on front panel by BookLab. The titlepage printing was letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald accomplished the printing of the etchings. Twenty-four photographic images by noted architectural photographer Judith Turner were selected by the artist and laid out in horizontally on five rectangular sheets of paper. They were photoetched and produced images with softer lines than photogravure. The artist has noted that this process helps conceal the deterioration of the sculptures. The etchings were printed with black ink and then using chine colle color was added by adhering thin sheets of colored tissue paper onto the heavier, larger sheets of paper. The effect is totally original and beautiful. The images float along the sheet of paper with the color calling attention to different aspects of these monumental pieces that are so essential to Western art.

        Trainspotting

Secker & Warburg London: Secker & Warburg. (1993). The uncorrected proof copy of his first novel, acclaimed upon publication and later the basis for the phenomenally successful movie that became a cultural milestone of the 1990s. The first edition of this book is scarce -- preceding the movie and its associated cultural uproar by a couple of years, it was issued in a hardcover edition reported at only 600 copies; the proof is many times scarcer; we have seen it only a handful of times. This copy is signed by Welsh. Shallow corner creases; very near fine in wrappers. . First Edition. Softcover.
