Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life SIGNED By Ornette Coleman

Morrow, New York 1993 - SIGNED in black ink at the half title page by Ornette Coleman. The ticket for the concert at which the signature was obtained is laid in, dated Wed. Sept. 26, 2007 for a performance at Royce Hall, UCLA , as part of the university's Alive! Concert Series; also laid is a 4" by 6" coloured photograph of Ornette taken at the signing. In quarter bound blue cloth with black paper boards, hint of spotting to top edge, else fine, in a like dust jacket, unclipped, now in a mylar sleeve. For more than fifty years, Ornette Coleman (born 1930), has astonished, delighted and infuriated his audiences in creating some of the most daring and innovative music of our time. He is now rightly considered, with Armstrong and Parker, one of the great "architects" of jazz who has radically changed the way we listen to it. Still flourishing in his eighties, Coleman has only recently received some of the honours due him, among them, in 2007, a Pulitzer Prize for his recording Sound Grammar and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the first comprehensive biography of the great saxophonist and composer by free jazz critic and scholar, Litweiler, who is also the author of The Freedom Principal: Jazz After 1958. The book is a vivid portrait of Coleman's brilliant and controversial career in its many incarnations, which makes extensive use of unpublished interviews, detailed and insightful musical analysis and includes a comprehensive discography. Given his reputedly retiring and reticent nature and advanced age, Coleman autographs are increasingly uncommon and book signatures, very scarce. An uncommon jazz collectible in fine condition. The Underground Railroad: Vermont and the Fugitive Slave

Worcester, VT: Dragon Dance Theatre, 1993. Folio. (15)ff. From an edition of fifty copies, this copy is out-of-series. Illustrated with fifteen woodcuts, printed in black & white, by the Montreal-based artist Sam Kerson. The woodcuts depict scenes related to Vermont's involvement in the Underground Railroad. Vermont has a long history of opposition to slavery: the state was the first to abolish slavery, and its citizens were very active in assisting fugitive slaves. This book was published to commemorate the opening of a mural that Kerson painted at the Vermont Law School, which, Kerson writes, "celebrates the efforts of black and white Americans in Vermont and throughout the United States to achieve freedom and justice." Kerson is a muralist, engraver, and the artistic director of the Dragon Dance Theatre, which focuses on puppetry and performance art with a social conscience. Stab-bound in black wrappers, with a black cloth chemise that ties around the book with blue ribbons and bears an additional woodcut on the front cover. Very fine.

        The Parthenon Pediments

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 1993. Portfolio of etchings, one of 25 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist Judith Turner on the reverse, all on BFK Rives paper and paper from Paul Wong, Dieu Donne Papermill. Page size: 30 inches by 15 inches; 6 leaves. Bound: loose in green paper portfolio with the title in silver gilt on front panel by BookLab. The titlepage printing was letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald accomplished the printing of the etchings. Twenty-four photographic images by noted architectural photographer Judith Turner were selected by the artist and laid out in horizontally on five rectangular sheets of paper. They were photoetched and produced images with softer lines than photogravure. The artist has noted that this process helps conceal the deterioration of the sculptures. The etchings were printed with black ink and then using chine colle color was added by adhering thin sheets of colored tissue paper onto the heavier, larger sheets of paper. The effect is totally original and beautiful. The images float along the sheet of paper with the color calling attention to different aspects of these monumental pieces that are so essential to Western art.
See an Image.
PIN LIE DUAN SHE; A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF SUNGHUA INKSTONE : COMPARABLE TO THE BEST TUAN AND SHE INKSTONES Songhua shi yan te zhan = A Special exhibition of Sunghua inkstone : comparable to the best Tuan and She inkstones

National Palace Museum, Taipei 1993 - Mandarin Chinese and English Edition; Color Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 322 pages; PIN LIE DUAN SHE; A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF SUNGHUA INKSTONE : COMPARABLE TO THE BEST TUAN AND SHE INKSTONES. 1st ptg Sept 1993. In a cloth slipcase [NF]. Text is in both Chinese and English. 91 photographic plates [some are full page], of stones in beautiful colors along with numerous textural cuts in b/w. I can do no better than to quote Chi, Jo-hsin's brief summary of their history. The combination of brush, paper, ink stick and inkstone, commonly known as the "Four Treasures of the Scholar's Studio," make up the principal tools of the Chinese literati. Made of most durable material—stone slabs, jade, ceramics or lacquer—the inkstone is the best preserved of the Four Treasures. The history of the inkstone proper begins in the Warring States period (ca. 5th century B. C. -3rd century B. C. ). Traditionally, the tuan stones of Kuangtung, she stones of An-huei, t'ao-ho stones of Kansuh and red ribbon stones of Shantung were the prestigious. Scant attention, however, was paid to the sunghua stone. Materials for sunghua inkstones are found in the Chi-lin and Liaoning provinces. Stones found in Chi-lin have green striations, while stones from Liaoning have either yellow and green or purple and green striations. Yet another stone, found in the northeast and featuring yellow striations, is also classified as a type of sunghua stone. In terms of stone quality, the sunghua inkstones from Chi-lin were most highly regarded, considered to be "comparable to the best tuan and she inkstones." Prior to the Ch'ing dynasty, sunghua stones were primarily used as whetstones. The emperor K'ang-hsi, however, elevated its status to inkstone material, and sunghua inkstones and ink boxes became popular during the reigns of Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung. Due to the belief that the origin of the sunghua stone was at the heart of Manchuria, these inkstones became important diplomatic and political gifts. The Sunghua Inkstones of the K'ang-hsi periodInscriptions found on inkstones from the reign of K'ang-hsi are numerous, ranging from the standard imperial reign mark ("Year of K'ang-hsi") to various laudatory imperial seals. Longer and more elegant inscriptions praising the quality of the stone, such as "Used in tranquility, this inkstone will last lifetimes," are also common. The decorative motifs found on K'ang-hsi inkstones often depict traditional and classical patterns. A fish fossil or a small window of glass is often used as a lid, and shells likewise are inlaid on the ink pool. Shapes of inkstones themselves vary greatly, taking square, circular, oblong, and rectangular forms, while ink boxes take on more adventurous non-geometric shapes such as fish and magnolia. The Sunghua Inkstones of the Yung-cheng periodDuring the reign of the emperor Yung-cheng, innovative designs in the shapes of the inkstones began appearing, imitating such forms as bamboo, ju-i heads, gourds and intersecting circles. The designs on the periphery and interior of the ink pool, the inkstone periphery, and the lid face incorporated auspicious symbols, which were used in various inscriptions. In addition to auspicious inscriptions, the tradition of adding imperial reign marks, customary during the K'ang-hsi reign, continued. The Sunghua Inkstones of the Ch'ien-lung periodInscriptions of the Ch'ien-lung period are also numerous, from the imperial mark to imperial seals expressing Ch'ien-lung's favor and prayers for eternal prosperity. During this period, attention to design on the face of the inkstone gave way to a new emphasis on ink pool shapes. Because court painters often acted as designers for the inkstones, designs found on the cover of the inkstones were identical to the painting styles of the court at the time. The covers of the inkstones became magnificently similar to the imperial landscape, floral, and fauna paintings of the time. Author: Chi, Jo-hsin [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Burma: 19th century]. (22 1/2 x 5 3/16 inches). 16 leaves (5 3/16 x 22 1/2 inches), each lacquered in red with elaborate overall decoration in gilt, 14 leaves with lines of black/dark brown lacquer text in square script (known as 'magyi-zi) recto and verso, two leaves with text on one side only. (Gilded decoration rubbed). Unbound between a pair of wooden coverboards, lacquered in red and with gilt decoration on outer surfaces, covers and text leaves with a single hole for tying. All within a dark red morocco-backed cloth box. The Kammavaca is a Pali term describing verses from the Tipitaka that relate to rituals of monastic life and ordination. It is considered to be one of the most sacred of Burmese religious texts often commissioned by lay-people as works of merit when a son entered a Buddhist monastery. "Kammavaca are volumes of one, five, or nine extracts from the Theravadin Vinaya, each relating to specific ceremonies associated with monks. Noel F. Singer writes that the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca Texts: Their Covers and Binding Ribbons," Arts of Asia, 23, May-June 1993) "In the 17th century, folios began to be made of pieces of cloth coated with lacquer and painted with cinnabar, and the square letters were written in thick, black lacquer. On rare occasions, folios were of ivory. Designs in gilt, which had been reserved for the ends of folios, end papers, and wooden coverboards, now began to appear between the lines of text. By the end of the 19th century, the lines of script on the folio increased to six or seven and sheets of brass or copper were introduced as folios." Secker & Warburg, 1993. First British (and true first) Edition (first printing). The debut novel by the author of THE ACID HOUSE, the acclaimed "jarring, fragmented ride through the dark underbelly of Edinburgh." Written in the local language of the streets, this book became one of the most-imitated stories of the 1990's. This is the very scarce hardcover printing -- estimates vary between 100 and 600 copies printed. The hardcover copies were earmarked for the Scottish library system, but were rejected as being "unsuitable" -- Welsh is said to have sold these off at an early Glasgow reading. Basis for the very successful film. Fine/Fine (the speckled top edge appears on every copy) but for the usual light browning of the pages. Signed by Welsh on the title page. From the Larry Owens collection. This book is available for U.S. domestic purchase only. . Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine.

        Trainspotting [Signed Uncorrected Proof Copy]

London: Secker & Warburg. (1993). The uncorrected proof copy of his first novel, acclaimed upon publication and later the basis for the phenomenally successful movie that became a cultural milestone of the 1990s. The first edition of this book is scarce -- preceding the movie and its associated cultural uproar by a couple of years, it was issued in a hardcover edition reported at only 600 copies; the proof is many times scarcer; we have seen it only a handful of times. This copy is signed by Welsh. Shallow corner creases; very near fine in wrappers. . First Edition. Softcover.

[Tenniel, John] ["Carroll, Lewis" aka Charles L. Dodgson). AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR OF JOHN TENNIEL'S FAMOUS "THE MAD HATTER RUNNING (WITH TEACUP AND TOAST)" An original Tenniel image, taken directly from the woodblock in the British Museum and hand colored by artist Francine Black for Macmillan, signed and dated November 1993 directly below. Image size approx. 4.5" x 4.5" and now mounted, glazed and framed to a size of 16" by 20". The original Tenniel drawings were of course uncolored; however Macmillan commissioned Francine Black in 1993 to hand color a small number of these images for a promotional campaign. It seems remarkable to us that Macmillan received permission to take this imprint directly from the original woodblocks held in the British Museum, which had been engraved by the Dalziel brothers from the drawings Tenniel had done for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's books, yet it's true. It's been years since we've seen one of these charming little paintings and this particular illustration from Chapter 11 (Who Stole The Tarts?) is both one of the very best known. An uncommon opportunity to acquire GENUINELY RELATED ARTWORK from the great Tenniel/Dalziel British Museum archive (as opposed to the millions of items created for the "Alice Industry." In Fine condition.. Signed. Illus. by Francine Black.
