Wuthering Heights [with The Limited Editions Club newsletter]

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1993. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Balthus. Number 177 of 300, folio size, 208 pp., signed by Balthus. First edition with these illustrations, limited, number 177 of 300. "What could they have in common--Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola and Mistress Emily Bronte--the Paris-born modern artist who has filled scores of canvases with paintings of pubescent female nudes, and the mid-nineteenth-century British spinster who seems never to have left the Yorkshire moors. But that was precisely the incredible connection. For in his youth the Count--better known as Balthus--had visited and been enchanted by those Yorkshire moors. And haunted by that wild landscape, at the age of 25 he made a series of drawings based on Emily Bronte's gripping novel. The drawings, whose incisive linear quality has been described by Jean Leymarie, Balthus' biographer and critic, as 'lit up with something of the book's flame and storm-flashes, have a place apart in his work and have provided the inspiration for several of his paintings'... Published in 1847, Wuthering Heights was the only novel written by Emily Bronte, who lived from 1818 to 1848. The adjective wuthering, in Yorkshire dialect, refers to the turbulent weather, and of course to the turbulent atmosphere that permeates the book." (N.B., from Newsletter.)***DESCRIPTION: Original binding by John von Isakovics at Jovonis Studio, gray-green goatskin with title stamped in dark-brown to upper board, plain white endpapers, 15 full-page inlaid lithographs on Japanese paper, Monotype Dante type, specially made off-white mould-made Arches paper, folio 12-3/4" x 16-1/2", pagination: [4 blank], [viii], 208, [2 blank], [1 colophon], [4 blank] pp., limited edition, number 177 of 300, signed by Balthus, with The Limited Editions Club newsletter laid in. Housed in a beige cloth clamshell case lined in velvet and title onlay to backstrip.***CONDITION: There could be no better way to read Wuthering Heights than this, the type, binding, and illustrations are all chosen with loving care, coming together in simple, balanced harmony. Koenig, a noted authority and scholar of fifteenth-century manuscripts and German incunabula, proposes in the accompanying essay that this fragment is the only known copy of the 1462 Bible to have been illuminated in England for the English market. Text includes a census of extant copies of the 1462 Bible and an introduction by Christopher de Hamel. Bound in quarter leather and paper-covered boards. The book and the original leaf are housed in a protective cloth folding case. Announcement laid in. Fine. (Chalmers 202).

Significant Tornadoes 1680-1991: A Chronology and Analysis of Events

Environmental Films 1993 - Very Near to Fine condition hardcover. No dust jacket as issued. Book is square and sound. Completely clean inside and out with no creases, marks or damage to pages. No rub wear to edges. The book's only flaws are extremely minor: two corners that are just very slightly bumped and very slight peeling of lamination at the top edge of the spine. This book is a must-have for anyone with a serious interest in tornadoes. Just about every significant tornado that has occurred in the United States since colonial times is recorded along with a brief description gleaned from local newspaper accounts and other sources, plus the time of day, the length and width of the storm's trajectory, the extent of damage, and the number of people killed or injured. It is really a masterpiece of meteorological research. I will carefully pack it bubble-wrap and ship it in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery. The book is very heavy so shipment outside of the United States would require considerable extra funds. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Last volume also contains: Addenda, Corrigenda, and General Index. Very good set in very good dustwrapper. Volume II dw is price clipped. Volume V very faint mark on front endpaper. Volume I SIGNED & dated by Millgate. Inside clean & tight. Nearly half of the last volume (vol. 7) is taken up with an exhaustive general index to the whole work. ?Chiselling and chipping away at 7 volumes of Hardyan reticence, Richard Purdy and Michael Millgate are meticulously informative editors. So far from banalising or deadening Hardy?s impact, his letters, by their reserve, underline that sense of breaking in upon stifled emotions and private passions which gives his work its singular, lonely intensity?         The Alchemist.

Harper Collins, San Francisco 1993 - First edition in English of Coelho's classic work, which has been translated into over 70 languages. Octavo, original half cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author on the title page, "____ ___ Follow your heart! Paulo Coelho." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Michele Wetherbee. Translated by Alan R. Clarke. Coelho wrote The Alchemist in only two weeks in 1987. He explained he was able to write at this pace because the story was "already written in [his] soul." The book's main theme is about finding one's destiny. It tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Field Guide to North America and to Other Regions.

Lapis Press., Venice, CA. 1993 - Original edition of the rarest of Wegman portfolios, limited to just 20 copies. Numbered and signed by Wegman on a certificate, which together with a printed inventory of the boxÕs contents, is inserted in an envelope pasted to the inside of the boxÕs lid. Each copy of the Field Guide to North America is unique, made up of watercolours, collages, paintings, drawings and photographs. Robert Shapazian, editor and overseer of the project at the Lapis Press, wanted Wegman to create the book using all of his media, except video. The collection of loose pages is boxed and wrapped in a sheet of red and black plaid blanket wool, reminiscent of a lumberjackÕs shirt. Although some photographs are repeated in the edition, the texts, collages and drawings are unique to each copy. Conceived and executed mostly over the summers at Wegman's lodge in Rangely, Maine, it is a witty melange of summer camp project, Victorian nature album and political manifesto. Together with colour and black-and-white photographs of two of WegmanÕs signature Weimaraner dogs Fay and Bettina, plastic leaves from Taiwan and sheets of coloured felt mingle among the drawings, hand-painted photographs and watercolours. Wegman, who divides his time between Manhattan and the Maine woods, borrowed from how-to nature craft books, primers and encyclopedias for this parody of a field guide, complete with its pictographic ÔTable of ContentsÕ painted on a slice of birch bark. Wegman writes, in coloured ink on the ÔCongratulationsÕ sheet, as an introduction to the portfolio: ÒThis boeke is intended for use as a field guide to North America and maye also be usde in other wayes fore other puerposes. However we cannot be helde responsible for misguidede fielde werke in any of these regionesÓ. Complete as issued with 34 unique pieces including colour and black-and-white photographs, collages with photographs and found objects, manuscripts, original drawings, a monoprint, an acrylic on canvas, watercolours, images stitched onto felt, etc. Contents loose within a red and black plaid blanket and housed in a hinged plywood box as issued. Title hand-painted onto front cover of box. Single leaf-shape marquetry inserts to both lid and rear board of box (the original plan, which never materialised, was to insert a compass in each cover so that the books would only open when pointing north).
