Mobsters

      c. 1930s-40s. Satin Tie belonging to Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, 52” long, 4.5” at its greatest width. Leaf theme with geometric shapes, purple lavender and light pink wide swing necktie circa 1930s and 1940s. No labels.

Provenance included picturing, in color, this tie. “Certificate of Authenticity” signed “Peter J. Hauser 6-15-1993,” 1p, 8.5” x 11”. No place, June 15, 1993. In part, “Virginia Hill was born on August 26, 1916 and rose to become the most famous lady in organized crime. In 1951 Time Magazine described Virginia as the ‘Queen of the Gangster Molls’ … Through her life Virginia did all kinds of jobs for the Mafia and in 1951 was brought forth before the Kefauver hearings. Virginia would eventually end up in Hollywood and become involved with Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel. After the Flamingo and Siegels execution Virginia would meet and marry ski champion Hans Hauser in 1950 … and eventually flees to Europe after she is indicted for tax evasion. In 1966 Virginia contacts Joe Adonis & Joey Epstein trying to get money hinting it would keep her from publishing her memoirs. On March 22 she traveled to Naples, Italy to spend the night with Joe Adonis. A few days later Virginias body is found in the woods near Salzburg, Austria covered in snow dead from an apparent suicide with a note near her body saying she ‘was tired of life’. Virginia Hill was 49.

“On this day the 15th of June, 1993 I certify the following item 1940s purple lavender & light pink satin tie belonging to Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel … whom my mother was romantically involved with and in my opinion was the only real love of my mothers life. Family and friends say my mother was never the same after Benjamin Siegel was murdered on June 20, 1947. This 1940s Purple and Pink Satin Tie along with other items belonging to Benjamin Siegel were left in the possession of my mother Virginia Hill at her home on 810 Linden drive in Beverly Hills, California after Siegels murder there. As her only son I took over my mothers estate after her death in 1966.”

Bugsy Siegel’s tie, here offered, was purchased by University Archives from the great nephew of a member of the 42 Gang, which, according to “The Mafia Encyclopedia,” was “certainly the best ‘farm team’ Chicago’s Capone mob ever had … the Capone men accepted one 42er … Sam ‘Mooney’ Giancana … As Giancana moved upward, he brought a number of 42ers after him. Among those who went on to make a considerable mark in the Chicago syndicate were:” Fifteen names are listed including the great uncle of the seller of this tie who purchased it from Peter J. Hauser in 1993 and who has signed Hauser’s COA as Witness.
Charles Lee

, September 1793, 1993. September 1793. Stitched legal accounting ledger on laid paper with soft wraps. Dated 1793. 11.75" x 7.25". Two stitches remain with the balance no longer present. Most of the internal leaves of the book are detached, and unbound. Soft wrap covers detached. Rear cover is no longer present, the front has substantial edgewear, with significant paper loss, toning and staining. Most of the spine is missing. Owner's name and date scripted to front wrap as "Charles Lees/List of Causes/September 1793"An important relic personally owned by Charles Lee as United States Attorney General under George Washington. He was elected to office in 1795 and continued in this capacity until 1801. Contains a detailed and heavily scripted list of pending or completing legal cases and appeals. Included in the ledger are dates, the names of the parties, and occasional reference to the judgments (such as "reversed", "affirmed", "sent to rules", "decree", 'dismd with forte"). 25 leaves, (50 pages), last page missing most of the paper.A wonderful piece of history. It is unclear whose hand wrote the contents or cover wraps, but quite possibly portions of the ledger are written in the hand of Charles Lee.

Bruce Ferrini /Hamill & Barker, Akron & Evanston 1993 - Folio. 40pp. One of 166 copies. With an original leaf from the fourth edition of the Latin Bible, printed by Gutenberg's successors. The leaf contains text from Deuteronomy 9:17 through 12:6, a significant passage in which Moses returns from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments and places them in the Ark of the Covenant, and God sets out his plan to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. Leaves from the Penteteuch are rare; a leaf with a significant passage such as this one is rarer still. Text includes a census of extant copies of the 1462 Bible and an introduction by Christopher de Hamel. Bound in quarter leather and paper-covered boards. The book and the original leaf are housed in a protective cloth folding case. Announcement laid in. Fine. (Chalmers 202). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wuthering Heights [with The Limited Editions Club newsletter]

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1993. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Balthus. Number 177 of 300, folio size, 208 pp., signed by Balthus. First edition with these illustrations, limited, number 177 of 300. "What could they have in common--Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola and Mistress Emily Bronte--the Paris-born modern artist who has filled scores of canvases with paintings of pubescent female nudes, and the mid-nineteenth-century British spinster who seems never to have left the Yorkshire moors. But that was precisely the incredible connection. For in his youth the Count--better known as Balthus--had visited and been enchanted by those Yorkshire moors. And haunted by that wild landscape, at the age of 25 he made a series of drawings based on Emily Bronte's gripping novel. The drawings, whose incisive linear quality has been described by Jean Leymarie, Balthus' biographer and critic, as 'lit up with something of the book's flame and storm-flashes, have a place apart in his work and have provided the inspiration for several of his paintings'... Published in 1847, Wuthering Heights was the only novel written by Emily Bronte, who lived from 1818 to 1848. The adjective wuthering, in Yorkshire dialect, refers to the turbulent weather, and of course to the turbulent atmosphere that permeates the book." (N.B., from Newsletter.) ***DESCRIPTION: Original binding by John von Isakovics at Jovonis Studio, gray-green goatskin with title stamped in dark-brown to upper board, plain white endpapers, 15 full-page inlaid lithographs on Japanese paper, Monotype Dante type, specially made off-white mould-made Arches paper, folio 12-3/4" x 16-1/2", pagination: [4 blank], [viii], 208, [2 blank], [1 colophon], [4 blank] pp., limited edition, number 177 of 300, signed by Balthus, with The Limited Editions Club newsletter laid in. Housed in a beige cloth clamshell case lined in velvet and title onlay to backstrip. ***CONDITION: There could be no better way to read Wuthering Heights than this, the type, binding, and illustrations are all chosen with loving care, coming together in simple, balanced harmony.
