Commonwealth: Essays and Studies, J.M. Coetzee, Waiting For the Barbarians.

Dijon, France: Editions Universitaires De Dijon, 1992. First edition of this collection of essays regarding Coetzee's Waiting For the Barbarians. Octavo, original wrappers as issued. Inscribed by the author, "To J.M. Coetzee with much admiration for his imaginative powers. Jean-Pierre Durix 25 October 1999." In near fine condition. Waiting for the Barbarians is an allegory of oppressor and oppressed. Not just a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times, the Magistrate is an analogue of all men living in complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency. "I have known few authors who can evoke such a wilderness in the heart of a man.... Mr. Coetzee knows the elusive terror of Kafka" (Bernard Levin, The Sunday Times).

        QUARANTINE

Legend An Imprint of Century [1992]., London, Sydney, Auckland, Johannesburg - Octavo, boards. First edition. QUARANTINE "effectively, and literally, encapsulates a near-future private-eye plot, of the sort familiar to readers of cyberpunk, within a solar system now enclosed by a vast enigmatic bubble that hides the stars. The unfoldings of the plot, and of its implications about human identity in a world (or complex of parallel worlds) controllable at the quantum level through computer-augmented brain functions, is extremely intricate." - John Clute and others, SFE (online). The author's first SF novel. Pulpy text paper just a bit tanned, a fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#156995) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Metamorphoses

Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1992. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio. (32)pp. From an edition of 57 copies, this is one of twelve deluxe copies with an extra suite of illustrations and bound in leather. Signed by both Kaldewey and Mary Caponegro. The regular edition of this book was made of three oblong books of varying sizes: the largest presenting the tale of Apollo and Daphne from Ovid's Metamorphoses in the original Latin; the second largest containing a retelling of the story in English from Daphne's point of view, written by the American writer Mary Caponegro; and the last serving as a colophon, which explains the history of Ovid's stories and provides insight into Kaldewey's creative process and his collaboration with Caponegro. It was printed onto large sheets that were then cut and bound separately into the three volumes. This deluxe edition uses the uncut sheets, so that all three texts appear together on each page. The uncut form lets the bold stripes, geometric shapes, and abstract swaths of color shine in their truest form, uninterrupted. Framed by the straightforward text of the colophon and English story, the orientation of the Latin text becomes increasingly dynamic as the story progresses toward the moment of transformation, which is expressed with a green explosion of ink and lines of text that radiate out from the center fold. The extra suite of prints, printed in purple, red, and black on Chinese paper, is bound in. Binding by Cornelia Ahnert of Chemnitz, Germany of flexible brown calf with the Tower of Poestenkill in gold to the upper cover. Protected by a chemise and slipcase. A characteristically imaginative presentation from Gunnar Kaldewey. Extremely fine. (Edition Kaldewey 19).

Historie naturael ende morael van de Westersche Indien.Enkhuizen, Jacob Lenaertsz. Meyn (colophon: Haarlem, printed by Gillis Rooman), 1598. 8vo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page. Vellum (ca. 1700?).

Alden & Landis 598/3; Palau 1992; Sabin 126; cf. Streeter 32 (1604 Eng. ed.). First Dutch edition of "the most convincing, detailed and reliable account of the riches and new things of America" (Streeter), written by the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta (1539/40-1600) and translated by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten from the original Spanish. The "West Indies" of the title still referred at this date to the New World as a whole, and the book concentrates on the Spanish possessions in Peru and Mexico, covering the Inca and Aztec people, customs, history, botany, zoology, mineral riches, trade, products, and much more. It was this book above all others that opened the eyes of the Dutch, the English and the rest of Europe to the extraordinary wealth Spain was reaping from its possessions in the New World, and it includes practical information such as sailing instructions, accounts of diseases, etc. With a 1645 owner's inscription, library stamps and the armorial bookplate of the Marchese of Bernezzo on the back of the title-page. With some repairs in the first two quires, the title-page rather worn and two leaves somewhat browned, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is scuffed and has cracks in the vellum at the front hinge, but is still good and structurally sound. The most influential early work on America, in its first Dutch edition.

Historie naturael ende morael van de Westersche Indien.Enkhuizen, Jacob Lenaertsz. Meyn (colophon: Haarlem, printed by Gillis Rooman), 1598. 8vo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page. Vellum (ca. 1700?).

      - Alden & Landis 598/3; Palau 1992; Sabin 126; cf.
