(Castle Rock): Bella Luna. (1992). Copyedited typeset sheets for an apparently never-produced limited edition of Offutt's first book, a collection of stories published in 1992 as a paperback original in the Vintage Contemporaries series. One full set (140 pages) and five partial sets (approximately 270 pages). With copyeditor's marks throughout. 8-1/2" x 11" sheets, printed on rectos only. A few marks where rubber bands once lay; near fine, in manuscript box. Offutt's book received high praise from critics; on the strength of it and his 1993 memoir, The Same River Twice, he was named one of the "20 best young American writers" by Granta magazine. Presumably unique. . First Edition. Softcover.

Artist's book, one of 40 copies only, all on handmade paper by Paul Wong of Dieu Donne Papermill, each copy signed by the artist, Susan Weil, and author, Lee Breuer. Page size: 10 x 10 inches. Bound: handmade paper wrappers in custom box by BookLab, fine. The etchings were editioned by Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald at The Printmaking Workshop and the text printed letterpress in Bembo by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly. & Lee Breuer, one of the pre-eminent figures in contemporary theater, was a former chair of the Directing Department at Yale University's School of Drama. He was commissioned by the Next Wave Festival of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) to write the libretto for an opera by composer Bob Telson, to be staged as part of the innovative productions of this theatre arts festival in 1983. The opera THE WARRIOR ANT has been recorded by Gramavision titled AN ANT ALONE. This is dramatist Lee Breuer's second collaboration with composer, Bob Telson; the first was a staging of Robert Fitzgerald's version of Sophocles' second Theban play, THE GOSPEL AT COLONUS which was also staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. Breuer is the founder of Mabou Mines, an experimental theater group, which has mounted Breuer productions of DOLL'S HOUSE, RED BEADS, and PETER AND WENDY, among others. Breuer has been awarded OBIE's for "Best Play, "Best Production," "Directing," "Lifelong Achievement" as well as grants from CAPS, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, as well as Fulbright and MacArthur Fellowships. Susan Weil, an American artist who studied with Josef Albers at the famous Black Mountain College and later in NY at the Art Student's League, was active in experimental artistic developments and was closely associated with such artists as Rauschenberg, Johns, Merce Cunningham, and John Cage. Together with her first husband, Robert Rauschenberg, she published "Blueprints," a series of works which contained figurative and abstract elements drawn from realms of dance, performance, and ready- mades, all of which influenced her future artistic evolution. Her juxtaposition of figurative and abstract elements, her creative use of collage, as well as the pictorial qualities of the various materials she uses for their sculptural potential are highlights of her work. All these elements are present in THE WARRIOR ANT, an intriguing continuum of text and images where the viewer wishes to move forward and yet backward sampling fresh pleasures from the pages each time they are viewed. & Once again, Vincent FitzGerald has integrated an avant-garde collaboration in the performing arts with the book arts, rewarding the reader / viewer with text, images, and concepts that challenge and intrigue.
See an Image.
GUS VAN SANT: 108 PORTRAITS

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1992. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1992. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 120 pages. The film director's debut collection of portrait-photographs. One of the finest photography books of the last decade of the 20th century. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody and Gus Van Sant: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with glossy black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Gus Van Sant. List of Plates appended at the end. Matching black cloth slipcase with titles on cover and spine. Printed in gravure on thick uncoated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the very highest standards. The breathtakingly beautiful printing quality must not only be seen but touched and caressed to be believed. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Gus Van Sant's starkly beautiful portraits of actors, artists, writers, colleagues, and friends. Every subject is photographed in exactly the same way: A frontal pose, taken at a medium-shot angle, with minimal lighting, thereby bringing out both the chiaroscuro effect of light and shadow and the expressiveness of his subjects' faces and bodies, in a manner reminiscent of Avedon's influential portraits. Every portrait is about beauty (as seen in the subject's face) and charisma (as shown by the subject's body). Gus Van Sant began taking photographs for the auditions of "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho". The casual picture-taking quickly developed into a full-fledged project, encompassing a Who's Who of the last and, in some ways, one of the most creative decades of the 20th century. Gus Van Sant knew and worked with a lot of people not only in film but also in theater, literature, painting, poetry, music, photography, and dance. Patrick McMullan's book, "So 80's", captured the exuberance and hedonism of a decade that was abruptly cut short by the devastation of AIDS. As a result, the succeeding decade turned out to be more sober. And yet, it was no less productive, as those who survived channeled their efforts into social activism and serious art-making. It was a somber mood that "My Own Private Idaho" captured so brilliantly. Some of the Beautiful People photographed include Robert Altman, William S. Burroughs, David Byrne, Annie Leibovitz, Sofia Coppola, Ken Kesey, Keanu Reeves, Allen Ginsberg, Matt and Kevin Dillon, Francesco Clemente, River Phoenix, Peter Gallagher, Francis Ford Coppola, Todd Haynes, John Waters, Faye Dunaway, Ricky Schroeder, and David Bowie. Gus Van Sant finally achieved mainstream status with "Good Will Hunting" and "Elephant", the culmination of his work in the 1990's, which includes this nostalgically, magically, and heartbreakingly beautiful book. A "must-have" title for Gus Van Sant collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver marker by Gus Van Sant. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of only two copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is our very last copy, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 108 gravure plates. One of the finest living American film directors/artists. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS AND OTHERGUS VAN SANT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0944092233.
