THE SCENTED GARDEN OF ABDULLAH THE SATIRIST OF SHIRAZ. (Bagh-i-Muattar). Deluxe Edition, limited to 11 copies, Bound in Full White Vellum with Silk Ties.

Chicago, IL: The Teitan Press., 1991.. Deluxe Vellum Edition. Octavo. 137pp. The Rare Deluxe issue, bound in full vellum with green silk ties, yapp edges, the spine titled in gilt, top edges gilt. This deluxe edition was issued in an extremely limited edition of 11 unnumbered copies only - a further 10 copies, numbered 1 to 10, were issued in 2011 by Samuel Weiser. A fascimile of the original edition of 1910, with a new Introduction by Crowley scholar Martin P. Starr. A fine copy. For bibliographical details, see "The Aleister Crowley Desk Reference" by J. Edward Cornelius (Teitan Press, 2013). The 1910 edition was printed in an edition of only 200 copies (plus 10 on vellum), but many of these were destroyed in a customs seizure not long after publication. A second customs seizure in 1924 depleted the number of surviving copies yet further, and it is consequently one of Crowley's rarest works. Crowley wrote in his CONFESSIONS: I spent most of my time writing ghazals, purporting to be by a certain Abdullah al Haji (Haji, with a soft “h”, satirist, as opposed to Haji with a hard “h”, pilgrim) of Shiraz. I caused him to flourish about 1600 A.D., but gave to the collection of his ghazals the title Bagh-i-Muattar (The Scented Garden), which implies the date 1905, the value of the Arabic letters of the title adding up to the equivalent of that year of the Hegira. I also invented an Anglo Indian major to find, translate and annotate the manuscript, an editor to complete the work of that gallant soldier (killed in South Africa) and a Christian clergyman to discuss the matter of the poem from the peculiar point of view of high Anglicanism. The ghazals themselves are rendered sometimes in the supposed original monorime, sometimes in prose, and the annotations contain a great deal of the more esoteric information about the East, which I had picked up from time to time. It is especially to be noted that, although I have packed every kind of magical and mystical lore into the volume, there is nowhere any reference to The Book of the Law. I was setting my whole strength against the Secret Chiefs. I was trying to forget the whole business. The book itself is a complete treatise on mysticism, expressed in the symbolism prescribed by Persian piety. It describes the relations of God and man, explains how the latter falls from his essential innocence by allowing himself to be deceived by the illusion of matter. His religion cease to be real and become formal; he falls into sin and suffers the penalty thereof. God prepares the pathway of regeneration and brings him through shame and sorrow to repentance, thus preparing the mystical union which restores man to his original privileges, free will, immortality, the preception of truth and so on. I put the last ounce of myself into this book. My previous efforts in the same direction would have deceived nobody, but the Bagh-i-Muatar, despite my inability to produce the Persian original—my excuse was that it was rare and held the most sacred and most secret, but was being copied for me—persuaded even experienced scholars that it was genuine. It was issued by Probsthain & Co., by private subscription, in 1910. I have heard of a copy changing hands at fifty guineas." - The Confessions of Aleister Crowley. London: Jonathan Cape, 1969, Pages 451-452. Note: Crowley met Herbert Charles Jerome Pollitt in October 1897 and is said to have been involved with him in a homosexual relationship. Pollitt is memorialized by Crowley in Chapter XLI “The Riddle”. By taking the first letter of each line of the poem, the name “Herbert Charles Jerome Pollitt” is spelled out. In the next chapter, “Bagh-i-Muattar”, an acrostic spells out Crowley's name in reverse.

        Needful Things

New York: Viking, (1991). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 690 pages. A novel set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. The premise is that a demon or perhaps the Devil himself sets up shop where he sells the items people most covet, like a Sandy Koufax baseball card, for absurdly low prices. Mayhem then ensues. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket (scuffing to covers). This copy is inscribed to King's friend and fellow baseball fan, the evolutionary paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould. Sometimes as a bookseller, a book makes your humble cataloguer sad. This is such an instance. Clearly King had great affection for Gould, beyond a shared love of baseball, even if they were passionate about different teams (a rivalry that played out in their books: see Gould, Wonderful Life, footnote on page 285, and the acknowledgements page of King's The Tommyknockers). But alas, Gould left us too soon and his books are now destined for other owners, a situation that Gould, as a book collector, well understood. The inscription reads, 'For Steve and Deborah Gould - with lots of love to [the children] as well. Steve, I know you don't believe in the devil, but I'm sure you DO believe that, if there WAS such a creature, he would undoubtedly ensnare the souls of young boys by offering them Brooklyn Dodgers baseball cards cheap! Love you guys. Steven King. 9/14/91.' This novel was published on September 30, 1991; given that the inscription is dated two weeks earlier, it is almost certainly one of King's author copies. It is hard to imagine that there is a better copy.

Limited special edition, number 12 of 17 numbered copies. Walter Feldman (1925-2017) was an art professor at Brown University and established the Ziggurat Press in 1984. This work is an illustrated collection of the songs that were sung in concentration camps, transcribed and translated from the Polish record album, Piesni Obozowe (Songs of the Concentration Camps), Polskie Nagrania: Muza, 1979, #SX1715. The authentic ledger folders used for binding are painted in black stripes, evocative of the uniforms worn by camp prisoners. Feldman states, "When I first saw the Lager Lieder I knew immediately that I would have to compose visual accompaniments for these powerful and frightening words. All aspects of the book were designed hopefully, to provide the appropriate setting, including the ledger folders (actually from the 1930s) to the authentic tattoo members in the title."***DESCRIPTION: Original bolted gray cloth with black stripes and leather corner pieces, paper label with title to upper board, black and red handprints to both pastedowns and title-page, ten woodcut illustrations, Bodoni type, Nideggen and Ingres papers, oblong quarto (9.75" by 13"), unpaginated [30 pp.], limited special edition, number 12 of 17 numbered copies, signed by Walter Feldman.***CONDITION: A fine copy in a repurposed, one-of-a-kind binding that is meant to be soiled in certain places, internally bright, fine; like new.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         A SNAKE; The Official Journal of the Last Rhythmic Tantrist Church of Tina Chopp (Heretic) Winter, 1991

Bellingham: John A. Bono and Pastor Jaymes Douglass Fyr, 1991. Saddle-stappled zine. Light shelfwear. Very good.. [40] pp. including color paper covers. a xerox printed zine, illustrated with line drawings and photocopied artwork. An extemely political zine, this is the innagrual issue, dedicated to worship and providing spiritual assistance to Tinites, and those of the Church of Tina Chopp, who wish to have spiritual sex with Tina Chopp and her son Ebeneezer Squeezer, the Holy Snake. Laid in loose is a TLs from Pastor Jaymes Douglass Fyr. An unusually well-produced document, in excellent condition, that includes two-color pages and a personally computer reproduced letter to me. A bullying joke gone too long, these guys are proto-alt-right trolls. Take the entire collection to watch their "ideology" morph into something recognizable and terrible in today's internet world.

Original violet half cloth, titles gilt to spine, white paper sides, patterned purple endpapers. Illustrated frontispiece and others in the text. Titles a little rubbed on vol. i spine, small dent to lower edge of rear board on vol. i, but all in excellent condition. There were also 300 unsigned cloth copies, the vast majority of which were sold to libraries. Winston Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing and won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, which was notable for its pioneering anthologies of gay writing from other cultures, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era. Gay Roots was produced to celebrate and anthologise these endeavours, advertised as "an anthology encyclopaedic in scale, Gay Roots collects the best writings from the turbulent early 1970's–the very beginning of modern gay liberation–right up to the present day. Work from Gay Sunshine Journal–the groundbreaking tabloid–that served as a forum and catalyst for the revolution underway–appears together with some of the most catalytic gay writing published by Gay Sunshine Press, the oldest continuing gay book publisher in the United States. Tennessee Williams wrote in 1977 of Gay Sunshine: 'The only completely literate and serious Gay Journal with which I'm acquainted.' Five books in one, with sections on 'Gay History,' 'Gay Sex and Politics,' 'Gay Biography and Literary Essays,' 'Gay Fiction,' and 'Gay Poetry,' Gay Roots is intended for every gay person desiring to reclaim a rich cultural tradition." (Gay Sunshine Bibliography).
