In the Spirit of Crazy Horse

NY: Viking. (1991). First thus. Inscribed by Matthiessen to his father prior to publication: "For Dad - The first copy of the new edition (out next month) - don't read it, whatever you do! Much love/ Peter/ Sanibel/ April, 1991." This "new edition" is the first printing of the 1991 reissue of Matthiessen's suppressed 1983 book about the confrontation between American Indian activists and the FBI in the early Seventies at Pine Ridge Reservation near Wounded Knee that left two federal agents and one Indian dead, and resulted in AIM activist Leonard Peltier imprisoned for life, convicted of the agents' murder in a case that as Matthiessen describes it was rife with government malfeasance. Matthiessen, his publisher, and even some bookstores who had stocked the book in 1983 were the targets of lawsuits brought by two government officials who claimed they were slandered by the hard-hitting book, which advocated the Indians' case. Until a landmark Supreme Court decision upholding Matthiessen's (and Viking's) First Amendment rights eight years later, the book was shelved, with remaining copies of it being pulped. This issue contains a 24-page epilogue that does not appear in the original edition, documenting the new evidence that AIM activist Leonard Peltier was railroaded in his conviction for the deaths of the two FBI agents, and an afterword by legendary First Amendment lawyer Martin Garbus, who defended Viking and Matthiessen in the lawsuits. Corners bumped, particularly the upper front corner; minor foxing to top edge; a very good copy in a near fine dust jacket with small corner chips. An excellent association copy, with a fine, humorous-but-telling inscription, penned at the time the author's landmark work was finally allowed to reach an audience, and as Matthiessen says, "the first copy." . First Edition. Hardcover.

        PASSAGE: A WORK RECORD

New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1991. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1991. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 300 pages. The photographer's third retrospective collection. Now considered a photography classic. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. The Edition is now very scarce. An austerely elegant production by Irving Penn and Nicholas Callaway: Oversize-volume format. Linen cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Irving Penn. Essay by Alexander Liberman. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents some of the most iconic, moving, and beautiful photographs ever taken in the 20th century by one of its greatest photographers. The book is aptly titled as the passage of time, place, unique cultures, and beautiful men and women have been Irving Penn's (and photography's) greatest subject. The portrait of two shabbily dressed American-Indian children shyly posing for the camera, their hands resting on an ornate European colonial-period table, is classic Irving Penn, a testament to his greatness and humane-ness as a photographer. It is everything the 20th century is about in one simple yet stunning image: Colonialism and culture, The Old and The New, Rich and Poor, North and South, East and West. Irving Penn died on October 7, 2009 at the age of 92, his place in photographic history permanent and secure. A heartbreakingly beautiful book, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Irving Penn collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the half-title page by the photographer: "Irving Penn 1991". Penn encircled his signature for emphasis. This title is now very highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and dated copy of the First Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Almost all other copies available online have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. 470 plates. Irving Penn's "Moments Preserved" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Flore Danoise

Paris: Robert & Lydie Dutrou, 1991. Folio. (15 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches). Half- title and title in red, Text in French and Danish, printed in black with headings in red and black. 7 coloured plates by Alechinsky, each an "eau- forte originale sur facsimile de Flora Danica," each numbered and signed in pencil by Alechinsky. Unbound as issued in original limp paper wrappers, the upper cover with etched calligraphic decorated title printed in red and silver, plexiglass slipcase. Fine copy: the edition limited to 165 copies signed by the author, this copy number 7 of the 125 copies for sale by the publishers. An approximate translation of the colophon: "Flore Danoiose, a poem by Michel Sicard - dedicated to his daughter Flora - and the Danish translation by Uffee Harder are both set by hand in 20 point Garamond type. The seven original etchings by Pierre Alechinsky are printed on facsimiles of plates from the 18th-century botanical work: Flora Danica." The excellent images - reminiscent of the work of Max Ernst - provide a fresh view of some of the more esoteric images from Flora Danica. The literary/artistic equivalent of cloud-imagined figures and landscapes, Alechinsky offers a sophisticated view which complements Sicard's text/poems to his daughter.

Anjos Proibidos [WITH] Various Sets of Publisher's Proofs for the American edition entitled: Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels

Itamarati Grafica e Editora (Ipirangia, Sao Paulo, Brazil: Itamarati Grafica e Editora. no date - 1991). First. First edition. Small oblong quarto. Very brief text in Portuguese. Twenty-four photographic images. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper with a small smudge on the rear panel. An exceptionally rare book of nude photography of adolescent Brazilian girls, published to accompany an exhibition of photographs in Sao Paulo. The devoutly Roman Catholic Brazilian government authorities seized and then destroyed 236 copies of the 500 copy run of this title just a week after its publication. Police raided Cabral's studio, gallery, and printer, and confiscated his negatives and existing prints of the photographs. After two years and legal vindication, Cabral received his negatives back, although in varying degrees of damage. The American edition, titled Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels, and published by Ophelia Editions in 2000, with 27 additional photographs was again suppressed when one of the models, now grown to adulthood, sued for invasion of privacy. Despite the publisher's eventual victory in the lawsuit, the book was still effectively suppressed, and when it now appears on the secondary market, it invariably commands four figures.[WITH] publisher's maquette and proofs for the American edition, as follows: 1. a full set of printer's "blue" proofs for the photos, text, and dustwrapper on blue proofing paper; 2. a full set of same on glossy paper; and 3. a full set of the folded and gathered sheets on glossy paper, laid into a proof of the dustwrapper.A rare book, with unique accompanying material. Provenance on request. OCLC locates two copies of the American edition, and no copies of the Brazilian edition. .
