Giving you a wonderful image of the vast American landscape with the pale blue skies and abstract mountains. 71 pp + colophon. Superb Special binding, does not include any loose leaves. (Dowd Special Bindings K, p63) Gaylord Schanilec (born 15 April 1955) is a notable American wood engraver & printer. See Wiki. Walter "Walt" Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.[1] His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.         The Lord of the Rings, Signed Numbered Deluxe Ltd. Edition

Australia: Collins, 1991. Limited/Numbered. Half-Leather. Alan Lee. Signed by Illustrator. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. "This specially bound and slipcased edition of the Lord of the Rings has been published to celebrate the centenary of J.R.R. Tolkien's birth on January 3, 1892. This edition has been limited to 200 copies for Harper Collins Publishers, Australia each one numbered and signed by the artist." "This copy number 55/200, Alan Lee" A beautiful book bound in blue leather and cloth with the JRRT monogram on the front boards of the book and the original publishers slipcase. The single volume has silver gilded edges, red ribbon marker bound in, and signed limitation page. Fifty original illustrations by Alan Lee thru the book. You can follow how the movies were first visualized by Lee, and carried thru by Peter Jackson, with Lee's assistance throughout the movie's production. A scarce book, again one of only 200 produced. The cloth of the book shows some soiling and wear to the edges, while the leather is unmarked, clean and bright. The Tolkien monogram is missing from the front board of the book, due to someone's attempt at cleaning the cloth, I would venture. The slipcase shows some wear and soiling, with a few frayed edges on the base and top of the case. The text block and all illustrations are clean and bright, no signatures or writing whatsoever. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good / No Jacket, as Issued.

Photomechanically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only of white and eight other colored stocks. Bradbound. Last several leaves show tidemarks along lower margins and gutters, with a trace of faint rippling (but no staining) continuing on into a few more leaves, two ink names (see below), else very good. A heavily revised "Final Shooting Script," with eight stages of substantial dated revises beyond that draft (i.e. a "rainbow" script). Penny Marshall directed the highly successful film with an ensemble cast that included Tom Hanks, Gena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, David Strathaim, Tracy Reiner, Kelli Simpkins, and many others. This script bears the ownership signature of Les Lazarowitz, the production sound mixer, as well as his name in block print (a designation as part of script distribution, perhaps) and a few relevant annotations in the text. The script is accompanied by a black leather covered baseball, signed in gold ink by a number of cast and production members, including Tom Hanks, Madonna, Gena Davis, Penny Marshall, Rosie O'Donnell, Robin Knight, Tracy Reiner, Janet Jones Gretzky, Pepper Pairie (one of the original league players) and Neezer Tarleton. The baseball is attended by a handwritten and signed attestation by Les Lazarowitz about his obtaining the signatures during the film's production.

        Line Drawings

1991-1993. Nine drawings by James Purdy, novelist and outsider artist, most of them signed. Most are on 9" x 12" sketch book paper. ¶ Profile in blue marker, 2 lines. Unsigned.- Profile in blue marker, 2 or 3 lines, with blue dots. Unsigned. ¶ Single portrait in black marker, 7 or 8 lines. Signed, 1991. ¶ Three faces, two in profile, in blue marker, 1 or 2 lines. Signed, 1992. ¶ Double portrait/embrace in black pen, 7 or 8 lines. 8-1/2" x 11" sketch book paper. Signed, 1992. ¶ Double portrait/embrace in black marker, 5 or 6 lines, 9" x 12", heavier stock paper. Signed, 1992. ¶ Double portrait in black pen, 11" x 14", heavier stock paper. 5 or 6 lines. Signed, 1992. ¶ Double portrait/embrace, 18" x 24", 5 lines, in black marker. Signed by Purdy in 1993. ¶ An 8-1/2" x 11" cover sheet, written in Purdy's hand in black pen, for his story "Brawith by James Purdy." On this page, the drawing is the signature, as the "Purdy," 1 line, seems to also serves as a rudimentary self-caricature. "Brawith" was published in The Antioch Review in 1994. ¶ The set is rolled; the sketch pages each have a perforated edge; the largest drawing is sunned on the lower edge; else fine. Purdy was a highly respected novelist and iconic figure in the history of gay literature. Edward Albee famously commented that there was a James Purdy renaissance every ten years, like clockwork. He counted among his close friends Tennessee Williams, Albee (who adapted his early novel "Malcolm" for the stage) and Gore Vidal, who called him "an authentic American genius," and he was praised and admired by such writers as Paul and Jane Bowles, Dorothy Parker, and Dame Edith Sitwell, among many others. His early artistic career was fostered by his relationship with the Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie, who was at the center of an artistic circle that included most of the great jazz musicians of Chicago in the 1930s -- Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, and others -- all of them "outsiders" of one sort or another. Purdy would be, for his entire career, an outsider himself and someone who wrote about outsiders. His first book was deemed unpublishable by mainstream publishers in 1956 so he had it privately printed. He chanced to send a copy to Dame Edith Sitwell, who was so impressed by it that she arranged to publish his second book, which had to be printed outside of the U.S. because of censorship laws. Purdy designed the books himself and illustrated them with line drawings like the ones in this group, and over his lifetime he produced an unknown, but large, number of such drawings. This James Purdy collection comes from the daughter of a woman named Elaine Benton: she was the wife of poet and novelist William Benton, and was a neighbor and good friend of Purdy. Their friendship began in 1983 and continued until her death in 1999. They were nearby neighbors in Brooklyn Heights and saw each other almost every day, taking walks in the neighborhood and also working together on Purdy's writings: Benton was the person who would read aloud to him his works-in-progress so that he could hear how his writing sounded and make revisions on the basis of that. When Elaine Benton died, these were left to her daughter. A very good collection of drawings by Purdy, with excellent provenance. .

Each volume is also available separately. The complete five-volume set includes: Voir Dire and Opening Argument, Direct Examination, Cross Examination, Summation, Anatomy of a Trial (co-authored with Professor Stephen A. Saltzburg). A partner and founding member in the New Jersey law firm of Stern & Kilcullen, Stern is a former Federal Judge, having served as United States district judge for the District of New Jersey from 1974 to 1987.         Group of four letters to historian and biographer, John Lukacs: TLS, 2 ALsS, ANS

Original manuscripts. Very Good. (1) TLS, 1-1/2pp, single-spaced, quarto, from 1170 Fifth Avenue, New York, November 7, 1991. In part: "....Your DUEL is a stunning piece of scholarship....You have done a masterpiece of historical writing. Only someone who has toiled to compose a book can perceive the art with which this extraordinary narrative is shaped....The scope, too, is remarkable....One could extract your judgments, characterizations, estimates, and conclusions and make a small book of aphorisms....Present-day Americans do not understand any politics but their own....On the point of Roosevelt's long uncertainty, I happen to have some information you could not know, because it has not yet been published. In 1941 FDR used Rene de Chambrun as propagandist....Yours with admiration and affection, Jacques." (2) ALS, 1p, octavo, in blue ink, from his Fifth Avenue address, Nov 12 /94. "....This autumn has been a series of ailments....It was good to know that you've finished your extraordinary book. Your rate of production is really splendid, and the quality of the product certainly deserves the recognition that was expressed in the Pennsylvania History Magazine. Doesn't this latest work of yours qualify for the you-know-what prize?...Affectionate regards, Jacques." (3) ALS, 1p, 12mo, in blue ink, Nov 12/95. "The letters are very good indeed. Coming from academics in a hoity-toity university, they are a tribute to your art & scholarship....I hope you can use the approving words to get a publisher....Mississippi is not at all a bad Press....My health & energy are returning slowly....All the best, Jacques." (4) ANS, 1/2p, handwritten note on an engraved announcement, from San Antonio, Mar. 9, 2007. "...Thank you for your fine book about G.K. [George Kennan]. It does him full justice. He was a good & great man. Trust you are well. Ever, Jacques." [This note is especially poignant in that it is handwritten on an announcement titled "Jacques Barzun to his Friends," telling them that a "lack of finger control" prevents him from answering their letters.] Barzun, recently deceased, was a French-born American historian of culture and ideas, winner of America's Presidential Medal of Freedom, and knight of the French Legion of Honor. Along with his friends and correspondent John Lukacs, Barzun helped establish the modern discipline of cultural history.
