London and New Castle, Delaware: The British Library and Oak Knoll Books, 1991. hand-bound in quarter vellum for the author by James Brockman, leather spine labels, slipcase with some leather trim. 53214|114672|27138|32875/PR. 4to. hand-bound in quarter vellum for the author by James Brockman, leather spine labels, slipcase with some leather trim. xii,407; 512 pages. 2 volumes. One of nine numbered sets bound-thus and signed by Tidcombe. This special edition contains three additional color plates in the first volume and two samples of marbled paper in the second volume. Companion volumes covering all aspects of Cobden-Sanderson and his bindings. The first volume covers the bindings executed by him over the period 1884-1893 and before the establishment of the Doves Bindery. The second volume is a chronicle of the binding shop he founded in 1893 and the famous bindings it produced over a 30 year period. In its early years the bindery shared premises with William Morris's Kelmscott Press. The consequent collaboration resulted in a series of richly-decorated copies of the Kelmscott Chaucer. Later on the majority of the bindery's work was for the Doves Press, which Cobden-Sanderson founded with Emery Walker in 1900. Dr. Tidcombe's comprehensive work includes a complete catalogue of the books produced with many bindings illustrated in color. Bound by one of England's most famous contemporary binders.

        Kazoku / Family

Tokyo: IPC Inter Press Corporation 1991 - Folio (416 x 295 mm), pp.[76]. 34 black-and-white photographs. Light grey textured endpapers. Gold paper-covered boards, upper side lettered in black and in blind, spine lettered in black; corners bumped. Original card slipcase, black, metallic white printed paper label wrapped around spine; lightly rubbed and bumped, light wear to edges. Very good. First edition. Fukase’s grandfather had opened a photographic studio in Bifuka-cho, Hokkaido, and as a child Fukase had assisted his father who had inherited the family business. Instead of taking over the studio himself, Fukase moved to Tokyo and worked as a photographer for an advertising agency. In 1971 he began to make regular trips back to Hokkaido to visit his family, whilst there he started to make a series of family portraits. His wife Yokho, the subject of much of his work appears in the first picture only, subsequently her place is taken by a number of different actresses and models who appear in a state of undress. He stopped making these family photographs in 1975, and divorced Yokho the following year. It was during a trip to Hokkaido that Fukase began his most well known series Karasu [Ravens]. In 1985 he returned again to Bifuka and resumed taking the family photographs. The series came to an end with the death of his father and the sale of the studio. In the year following the publication of Kazoku Fukase fell down a flight of stairs in a Shinjuku bar and suffered severe brain damage which has since incapacitated him and left him completely unaware of his important contribution to photography. Scarce, only 2 copies in OCLC: Princeton; Zuercher Fachhochschule University of Applied Sciences, Zurich. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

So z.

        Memoirs of Ralph Early Grim

No place (but Champaign, Illinois?): Privately Printed, 1991. Very scarce (said to be limited to only 6 copies). Appears unread. Fine condition. NOT a library discard. A bright, clean, square, tight copy. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh, crisp and unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall by 1.75" thick. Posthumously printed memoirs of Ralph Early Grim (1902-1989), geologist and Research Professor Emeritus, Department of Geology, University of Illinois, Urbana. The February 2009 newsletter of THE CLAY MINERALS SOCIETY (photocopy laid-in) contains a tribute to Grim from the University of New Mexico's Dewey Moore. In it Moore writes: "The contrast between his rather humble origins and his lofty reputation as a scientist and world traveler was perhaps the stimulant for him to write his memoirs. After his death, his wife, Frances E. Grim, had them transcribed and a few (perhaps 6) copies bound. The original copy of MEMOIRS OF RALPH EARLY GRIM is in the University of Illinois Main Library archives; one copy rests in the Clay Minerals Society's archives." Handsomely bound in the original maroon pebble-grain full leather, stamped in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. From Dewey Moore's tribute: "In 1951, [Grim] shifted to the University of Illinois Geology Department. From this base, Grim put his mark on the clay minerals profession: guidance at the 1951 meeting in St. Louis that served as the incubation for what was to become The Clay Minerals Society; his 1953 publication of CLAY MINERALOGY; and the publication of his APPLIED CLAY MINERALOGY (1962). From this point on, most of us are familiar with Ralph Grim's history. His books proved to be the vehicles that carried clay science into maturity as a discipline. His professional activities led to many accolades from his peers. The ultimate honor for a mineralogist is to be awarded the Roebling Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America. Ralph Grim accepted this award in 1974. For what could be called the corresponding award for consulting, the Ivory Coast in western Africa bestowed on Professor Grim in 1973 the title of Chevalier (Knight). Ralph Grim earned this highest honor for a non-citizen for developing local professionals to take over the duties of the Ivory Coast Geological Survey during his 15 visits to the country and for discovering a huge iron deposit in the western part of the country." This large, heavy book will require extra postage for Priority and International shipments, but only the standard charge for media mail.. First Edition (1 of only 6 copies?). Oversize Hardcover. Fine condition/No jacket, probably as issued. (vi), 689pp.

        MY SISTER-LIFE.

Limited Edition Club (1991)., [New York]: - First of this edition. One of 250 numbered copies SIGNED by the illustrator, Yuri Kuper. Translated by Mark Rudman. "In Russian poetry, Boris Pasternak's My Sister-Life is the equivalent of The Waste Land, Spring and All, and Harmonium. But it is also accessible to the general reader, and belongs on a slender shelf of great love poems.Pasternak is an uncompromisingly complex poetic stylist, and his meticulous attention to structure, etymology, and the phonetic qualities of words makes his poetry a formidable challenge for the translator. Mark Rudman renders Pasternak's poetic masterpiece with verve and intelligence" (from cover of recent Northwestern University edition). Large folio (16 x 23") with gray goatskin spine and treated handmade paper boards using the same paper as the text. Housed in a slipcase of gray linen-rayon. Printed letterpress on paper made by hand to resemble the sort of stock produced in the 1920s in the Soviet Union. Illustrated with six original etchings by Yuri Kuper SIGNED by the illustrator on the colophon page, and this copy with each etching signed in pencil by Yuri Kuper -- though not issued as such. One of the smallest limitations of the club. Monthly Letter laid in. A beautiful edition printed on handmade paper recycling various Cyrillic printings. Kuper's work is found in the permanent collections of MoMA, Moscow Museum of Fine Arts, Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris, etc. Publishers' newsletter laid in. Fine in a fine slipcase.         RAFT

[London]: GraftonBooks A Division of HarperCollinsPublishers,. [1991]. boards.. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#138840). First edition. Signed inscription by Baxter to "Frank" on the title page. The author's well-received first book. "... RAFT features some of the most startling hard SF content in recent years. It is the first volume in the author's loosely connected Xeelee future history." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II- 84. "Humans are stranded on a 'raft' in a pocket universe of enormous gravity. Baxter's debut novel, in which he describes his young hero's quest through a world that is strange indeed. As an all-too-rare example of British SF rooted in speculative physics, it has drawn praise from Larry Niven, Bob Shaw and others." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. [296]. "It is very, very hard SF, and it's great fun, and the cosmogonic precepts of its universe are challenging to grasp, and it's quite quickly told, and it's really dumb about people." - John Clute. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-84.

        Couples *
