The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis.

Harcourt Brace and Company, Orlando 1991 - First American edition of the Nobel-Prize winning author's second book to be translated into English. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed and dated by Saramago. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The Portugese writer Jose Saramago is the recipient of both the 1995 Camões Prize and 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. Harold Bloom described him as "the greatest living novelist" and considers him to be "a permanent part of the Western canon (Evans, 2002). The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis is "[t]he greatest of his novels" (New Statesman), "[a] capacious, funny, threatening novel" (New York Times Review of Books). Saramago "has created a body of work of luminous power: ironic, intellectually playful, dense and strange" (Scotsman). "A patient, old fashioned novel full of dialogue and detail, mist, streets, squares, statues, meals, rooms, neighbors, life in a particular hotel of modest pretentions. Ao much 'reality,' carefully documented, lovingly piled up" (The New York Times). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Kormak's Saga

Merino Press, ACT, Australia 1991 - 84 pages. Card covers. Pages are clean, straight & unmarked. Tight binding. This hard to find book is in as-new condition. "Kormak Ogmundsson was born in Iceland in the later half of the 10th Century, about 100 years after the first permanent Norse settlement in 874 A.D. During his life he was to become a Viking raider in Ireland and also a poet at the court of King Harald Greyfell of Norway. This 'transcreation' of Kormak's Saga follws the life and poetry of Kormak, as well as that of his descendents, through Ireland and Australia, as each vainly persues Steingerd, the women Kormak hopes to win through the honesty in his verse and his deeds."         Anjos Proibidos [WITH] Various Sets of Publisher's Proofs for the American edition entitled: Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels

(Ipirangia, Sao Paulo, Brazil: Itamarati Grafica e Editora. no date - 1991). First. First edition. Small oblong quarto. Very brief text in Portuguese. Twenty-four photographic images. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper with a small smudge on the rear panel. An exceptionally rare book of nude photography of adolescent Brazilian girls, published to accompany an exhibition of photographs in Sao Paulo. The devoutly Roman Catholic Brazilian government authorities seized and then destroyed 236 copies of the 500 copy run of this title just a week after its publication. Police raided Cabral's studio, gallery, and printer, and confiscated his negatives and existing prints of the photographs. After two years and legal vindication, Cabral received his negatives back, although in varying degrees of damage. The American edition, titled Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels, and published by Ophelia Editions in 2000, with 27 additional photographs was again suppressed when one of the models, now grown to adulthood, sued for invasion of privacy. Despite the publisher's eventual victory in the lawsuit, the book was still effectively suppressed, and when it now appears on the secondary market, it invariably commands four figures.[WITH] publisher's maquette and proofs for the American edition, as follows: 1. a full set of printer's "blue" proofs for the photos, text, and dustwrapper on blue proofing paper; 2. a full set of same on glossy paper; and 3. a full set of the folded and gathered sheets on glossy paper, laid into a proof of the dustwrapper.A rare book, with unique accompanying material. Provenance on request. OCLC locates two copies of the American edition, and no copies of the Brazilian edition. .

BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA (VOL. 5) (AUTHENTIC FACSIMILE EDITION) Parrots, Pigeons, Cockatoos, Quail

Hill House. New;. 1991. Hardcover. 75 Plates. This is not a mere reproduction. This is an exact facsimile of an original held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. It is not a reproduction, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the originals. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. This facsimile carries faithfully every spot, mark or stain as the original. It also carries the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. The color printing is so accurate that, from behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile. This facsimile is exactly the same size as the original (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). It is cased-in and bound between 4 mm. The boards are covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the book, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. This book is individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. ; Vol. 5 .

        The Voidoid

New York: CUZ, 1991. The very uncommon 1991 1st edition, SIGNED BY RICHARD HELL on the title page. Even though the limitation states --erroneously-- that there were 521 copies issued, the author confirms that there were far, far fewer than that done (more along the lines of 30 to 40 copies). A sharp, well-preserved copy to boot. Bright and Near Fine in its original stapled wrappers. Very light scuffing at the lower panel edges and one inconspicuous crease along the spine, otherwise clean as could be. Quarto, 45 pgs. An early meditation (published in its completed form in 1991) from the lead singer and songwriter of the seminal 70s New York Punk band The Voidoids. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Original Wraps. Fine.

Springer, 1991. 1991. Hardcover. Good. Embryologie ISBN-10 3-540-18983-1 / 3540189831 ISBN-13 978-3-540-18983-1 / 9783540189831 Humanembryologie.         Anjos Proibidos [WITH] Various Sets of Publisher's Proofs for the American edition entitled: Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels

Itamarati Grafica e Editora, (Ipirangia, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1991 - First edition. The American edition, titled *Anjos Proibidos: Forbidden Angels*, and published by Ophelia Editions in 2000, with 27 additional photographs was again suppressed when one of the models, now grown to adulthood, sued for invasion of privacy. *OCLC* locates two copies of the American edition, and no copies of the Brazilian edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Autobiographical Trilogy, comprising] Cider with Rosie; [with] As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning [Signed], [and] A Moment of War

London: Hogarth Press / André Deutsch / Viking [through 1991], 1959. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Three volumes complete, two first impressions and one signed second. 8vo: 280; 252; 178pp. Cider with Rosie (Hogarth Press, 1959): First Issue (suppressed) of the first, and most famous, book in the trilogy, with mention of the piano-works fires on p. 272. Publisher's forest-green cloth, spine stamped in gilt, with drawings by John Ward; illustrated dust jacket priced 18s. Very lightly age-toned, else Fine. As I Walked Out (André Deutsch, 1969): Second Impression, signed by Lee on title page. Publisher's tangerine cloth, spine stamped in gilt, with drawings by Leonard Rosoman; price-clipped illustrated dust jacket. Square, tight and apparently unread, an exemplary example. Moment of War (Viking, 1991): Publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in silver, with unattributed drawings; price-clipped illustrated dust jacket repriced $24.99 top of front flap for the Canadian market. Very lightly faded spine panel on jacket, else Fine, virtually As New. & ¶ In 1957, the Hogarth Press offered Lee £500 "to give up all other work and get on with" Cider with Rosie, which had been commissioned ten years earlier. The book is Lee's account of his childhood as a "scab-kneed schoolboy" in the Costwold village of Slad, in the period after the First World War, and chronicles the traditional, mainly feudal, village life that disappeared with the advent of the motor car. (The identity of Rosie was revealed years later to be Lee's distant cousin Rosalind Buckland.) Cider with Rosie sold six million copies worldwide, allowing Lee to buy Rose Cottage, "in the heart of the village, six stumbling paces from the pub." "As I Walked out one Midsummer Morning, the trilogy's second installment, was published ten years later. Disastrously, since his diaries were the basis of his work, Lee's irreplaceable volumes for 1935–37 were stolen while he was in Spain with the BBC in 1969. Their loss made the writing of the trilogy's final work more difficult. . . . Ironically, the book was ultimately sharper and more moving because it was less reliant on detail. . . . A Moment of War (1991), his memoir of the period [of the Spanish Civil War], describes his being three times arrested, imprisoned, and on the brink of being shot as a fascist spy, and graphically describes the disorganization, amateurism, and squalid living conditions endured by republican recruits." (ODNB) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

CONDITION: Near Fine (some light toning at the extremities; moderate surface wear, else Fine). From the publisher: "We grasp the considerably wide connotation of the word 'Hysteric,' and the emotions usually associated with hysteria. However, looking at it in a different light, we can begin to feel the energy in the word 'Hysteric.' The image which comes to mind is that of high tension and taut nerves, and can never be seen as apathetic. Hereafter, we want to make a series of these books with people who firmly believe they have the energy to elevate the feeling of 'Hysteric.' Before long, the concept of 'Hysteric' might be changed."
