        Septuagenarian Stew: Stories and Poems.

Santa Rosa,:: Black Sparrow Press,, 1990. 0876857942. A Fine copy in a Fine Acetate dust jacket as issued. This us one of only 500 copies signed by Bukowski and numbered. In this collection, Bukowski confronts the reader with many of the down-and-out themes he has been writing about for years. His work for the most part is populated here with society's losers--alcoholic bums, mad housewives, compulsive gamblers--their decaying selves slipping inexorably into oblivion. Life's supposed winners fare no better. The movie star in the story "Fame" is murdered by a fanatic fan. The writer in "Action," who once smugly refused the Pulitzer Prize, squanders all his money at the racetrack and wastes his creative abilities in the process. Even the author's fictionalized self, Henry Chinaski, rescued from being "a pile of human rubble" by an editor interested in his work, can never transcend the junk heap of human existence. He continues to rely, paradoxically, on booze to help him survive..

With six etchings by Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993), abstract artist and winner of the National Medal of Arts in 1991; for this volume he "took the Yeatsian theme of an empty coat on a hanger to produce a series of prints transforming the garment from a representational frock-coat into an abstracted suit-bag. The sixth etching is a double map of Ireland, indicative of that divided country" (from web site of Arion Press). ***DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in red goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine, boards covered in evergreen cloth, limitation statement at the front with artist's signature in pencil, this no. 155 of 400 copies for sale, title page in red and black, poem titles in red; quarto size (approximately 10.25" tall), pagination: (i)-xxv being the preliminary pages and the introduction, (1)-171, blank (172), colophon (173). Cfr. Castleman ?A century of artists books?, p. 52: ?Another American, Sol LeWitt, devised an art from simple sets of instructions, so that large walls could be covered with drawings executed by others, simply following his orders. He, too, was interested in sets, this time sets of lines of certain lenghts, colors, and directions. Like Ruscha, he produced photographic booklets with sets of things, but his systematic examination of how the simplest form, a straight line, could be manipulated into complexity by multiplication, generated his most notable books?. ?Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), scultore statunitense. Dopo gli studi alla Syracuse University di New York, ha affiancato alla sua ricerca un'intensa attività didattica presso il Museum of Modern Art di New York. I suoi disegni e le sue strutture geometriche modulari sono tra le espressioni più autentiche della minimal art, di cui LeWitt ha sviluppato il polo costruttivo. Sue opere sono conservate nei maggiori musei d'arte moderna?, così Diz. Treccani.it. Esemplare con firma autografa di Lewitt al frontespizio. Ben conservato.

Archive of correspondence and manuscript relating to the publication of "The Important Game of Chicken"

N.p.: N.p., 1990. Small archive of correspondence between Patricia Highsmith and editor James L. Harmon, regarding Highsmith's invited contribution to an anthology published by Simon and Schuster in 2002, edited by Harmon, titled "Take My Advice: Letters to the Next Generation," featuring a number of short essays (all new) by a wide variety of fiction writers, thinkers, and icons with the wisdom they feel compelled to pass on to the those who will navigate the future. Contributors to the book included Ken Kesey, Joe Dallesandro, William S. Burroughs, Lydia Lunch, Spalding Gray, Richard Powers, Quentin Crisp, Bette Davis, Jim Harrison, Martha Gellhorn, Joe-Peter Witkin, Mary McCarthy, Anita O'Day, Bettie Page, and many others. The archive includes four typed letters signed and one typed note signed from Highsmith to Harmon, discussing the essay, as well as the contract (with a signed cover letter) for the short piece from Highsmith's agent, and the corrected manuscript submitted by Highsmith, a six page nonfiction essay titled "The Important Game of Chicken." In her letters, Highsmith speaks with perception and insight about the process, noting an interest in how the inclusions by Mary McCarthy and Bette Davis might read, and expresses admiration for Fay Weldon's contribution (apparently sent to her by Harmon). Clearly the list of contributors sparked the author's interest in participating. Highsmith also offers addresses for potential contributors (apparently requested by Harmon), including Wim Wenders and Peter Handke, and speaks disparagingly of George Bush, Sr. Highsmith's essay, written just after the Berlin Wall came down, muses in some detail on the importance of "playing chicken" in world affairs, and cites numerous examples of how this peaceful (and political) approach has worked well throughout history, as well as examples where pure aggression have repeatedly failed. Highsmith's essay was not included in the anthology, and remains unpublished. All material Very Good to Near Fine. All TLS's include original stamped mailing envelopes, and only the typed essay with corrections is a photocopy, as sent by the author.

Two typed letters signed to Gavin Young.

8vo., 2 single sheets of Greene's La Residence des Fleurs headed paper. Both letters folded once otherwise on very good condition. Greene's first letter dated May 14th is a reply to a letter Gavin Young had sent to him on April 21 (a photopcopy of Young's letter is supplied). Young's letter reminds Greene that they had met for an interview a few years earlier (the interview was published in the Observer in March 1978, reprinted in Worlds Apart , 1987). Young goes on to explain that he is planning to write a book about Joseph Conrad and his travels and asks to meet Greene to have "a quiet gentle chat about places and people which I believe you are interested in - and by which I am quite enthralled." Greene offers a warm reply "Many thanks for your letter. Your journeys sound of great interest and I shall look forward to your book. I think the only parts where our paths crossed are Bankok and Singapore. I would like to hear you speak of it all over a drink, but alas my drink would be orange juice, as I am struggling with anaemia". The second letter comes after Young and Greene had met. "It was a great pleasure for me too to see you again. I never thanked you properly for all those books you left with me...I have of course read yours which I enjoyed thoroughly and I'm sure was the best of the bunch. Djuna Barnes strikes a note in my memory and I shall read he next when I get back to Antibes... I'm afraid I would have been a bad companion on your trip round the world. I haven't got sufficient patience!" Sold with paperback copies of Gavin Young's World's Apart which includes on pp. 290 - 294 Young's article Pink Gin and Panama recording Greene and Young's first interview, and also In Search of Conrad, the book about which he and Greene met to have "a quiet, gentle chat".
