        Archive of materials

1989. MENENDEZ, Eric. Diary and archive of materials. Los Angeles, 1988-89. One 9-3/4 x 7-1/2-inch composition notebook, with notes, letters, and related papers. $5500.Diary and archive of letters and related materials once belonging to Eric Menendez, who, along with his brother, was convicted of the 1989 murders of their parents. On August 20, 1989, 21-year-old Lyle Menendez called 911 and told the operator that he and his 18-year-old brother Erik, both of whom were aspiring professional tennis players, had returned home to find that their parents had been shot and killed. Jose and Kitty Menendez had been shot multiple times at point-blank range. In 1992, the brothers were indicted for the murders; their 1993 trial, which was broadcast by the new Court TV network, ended with separate juries for each brother deadlocked between finding them guilty of murder or of manslaughter. Lyle and Erik were found guilty of murder in a second trial, spanning the fall of 1995 and winter of 1996, and are now serving life sentences in prison. The Menendez family had previously lived in Calabasas, California; they moved to Beverly Hills in 1988 after Erik plead guilty to burglarizing the homes of parents of his schoolmates, stealing an estimated $100,000 in cash and jewelry. Lyle was also implicated in the burglaries, but Erik’s guilty plea as a juvenile shielded Lyle from legal action.A $1.69 composition notebook signed by Menendez in pencil on the front cover contains his journal, which was started one day before the Menendez family moved to 722 Elm Drive in Beverly Hills, the house in which the murders of his parents took place. In it Menendez discusses losing his virginity, renewing his tanning salon membership, modeling, playing tennis, and the possibilities of having sex with the two girls he is dating. Notably missing, with some brief exceptions, are references to his brother Lyle (“An hour late because Lyle has changed my car clock to right time.”) and his parents (“Steve and Cig showed up at 1:00 AM and my dad told Cig that if Cig ever shows up at this house again he is going to beat the shit out of him.”). The last entry is on June 18, 1989, two months before the murders.Five letters sent to Menendez in prison from schoolmates and friends from the tennis circuit express support for the jailed teenager: Ed: “I hope you win your case. Soon. This 8 months w/o bail is a joke.” Dave: “Never think that I’m not on your side. In fact sometimes I think that the power of my conviction alone is strong enough to pull you out of the arms of those who would hurt you… I believe with all my heart that you & Lyle will be absolved of this insane affair.” Casey: “It’s so funny how so many reporters blow everything out of proportion, don’t sweat it.” Andy: “I want you out of jail whether or not you did it. I don’t care if you did it and I don’t care if you were to do it again to me… Call me. My parents are on your side. They love you, always have.”Also included are two sets of dental x-rays; one Polaroid photo; one booking sheet for modeling with a California talent agency; a program from a senior show at Beverly Hills High School in which Menendez appeared as a model; a letter, cards and a note from female school friends; the receipt stub for his senior yearbook photo; a fragment of a note written by Menendez to a friend about AIDS; a photocopy of a letter he sent to a former girlfriend explaining why he had to break up with her. An unusual and unique collection.

SOCIÉTÉ PARADISIAQUE: OU LE REVE HÉLATEUR D'UN HYPERGRAPHE SENSIBLE.|LA

Paris: L'Inéditeur, 1989. folio. cloth portfolios. Unpaginaged. 5 volumes. This set is one of an edition of 10 numbered copies in a total edition of 21 copies. 25 Original photographs by Albert Dupont. Preface by Isidore Isou.Contains 25 original photographs handcolored and worked by Dupont on Arches paper. All signed by Dupont. Each volume contains 5 photographs illustrating texts and manifests of Dupont. Volumes also contain a small camera, binoculars, compass, hologram and various assorted items all in their own folders. Each portfolio is in a different colored board folder red, cerise, yellow, blue and green. Each slipcase has a portion of the title on the spine and is in the same colors as the portfolio boards, but not the matching portfolio, so the effect is even more vibrant. This title comes from a new concept in the social and economic field of the Lettrist Group, which aims at an ideal society based only upon creation and innovation as major values of society, instead of our actual society; ethos based upon work and collectivity, whether in socialism or for profit. In this major work Dupont is expressing his wish fulfillment for his ideal society La Societé Parodisiaque. The volumes contain photography, lettrist, hypergraphic (with signs) infinitesimal (based upon imagination), and the supertemporal (public participation) all explained and shown by different statements of Dupont. The 25 photographs have titles which are either word play or poetic names used for different artists whom Dupont admires, such as The magnetic field André Breton, Eros vertigo Matta, and erotic book without orthograph Arthur Rimbaud, and others. The preface is by Isidore Isou who is the founder of Lettrism. Dupont wanted every photograph to be different and innovative to express his own style and they include drawings, jokes, mystery, manipulation, new materials, objects, letters, codes, signs, light, sound, hologram, kaleidoscope and also of course fun in the style of Man Ray, whom he considers as a reference as photographer and creative artist.

20 Poemas de Amor y 1 Cancion Desesperada

Kaldewey Press, Poestenkill, NY 1989 - Oblong folio. 106pp. One of twenty deluxe copies printed on papier de Chine and bound in flexible blue textured leather by Christian Zwang. With twenty-five linoleum cuts in several colors by Kim Keever. Signed by the artist. Keever's linocuts draw directly from the theme of love, with imagery of women and men and handwritten text. These are displayed to greatest effect in this deluxe edition, as the translucent Chinese paper allows the text and images to show through. Designed and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey, who combines the traditional with the experimental, bringing together the work of an early twentieth-century poet with the techniques and ideas of the late twentieth-century artist. In this work, Kaldewey utilizes an inventive index format in which the pages for each poem are one inch wider than the poem before, allowing for each section to be accessed easily and directly. The title page, as it were, is printed letter by letter across these tabs. Housed in a grey chemise and slipcase. Very fine. (Edition Kaldewey 15). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Tom Wood: Looking for Love, Photographs from Chelsea Reach Nightclub, New Brighton, Merseyside [SIGNED & INSCRIBED]

Cornerhouse Publications, Manchester 1989 - First edition, first printing. Inscribed and signed in red ink on the title page by Wood. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated laminated wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Tom Wood. Foreword by David Chandler. Afterword by Jenny Newman. Includes a biography and commentaries by former club-goers Mark Lally and Kirsteen and former manager, Paul Chase. Designed by Christopher Lord. Unpaginated (72 pp.), with 42 four-color and 4 duotone plates, with additional illustrations, beautifully printed on heavy matte paper by Jackson -- Wilson. 8-3/4 x 11-1/4 inches. Out of print. Fine. From the foreword by David Chandler: "Tom Wood's Looking for Love begins where documentary ends. These pictures, taken at the Chelsea Ranch, New Brighton, belong to a prolonged period of visual negotiation between Wood, the immediate community and the wider environs of Merseyside. They are one aspect of a complex and layered portrait. Although most were taken between 1984 and 1987, Wood began photographing in the area in 1978 and by the time he started working at the club either knew or recognized by sight, many of its clientele. In viewing these photographs we seem to collude with the photographer. As we count the spots or trace the melting eyeliner we are implicated in an act of intrusion. Some viewers may be repelled by this closeness or dismiss it as mere voyeurism, yet Wood is interested in more than just short term gains. His concern is to infiltrate that mythology of the night out, to find within the buzz and the boredom, within the public displays of lust, loneliness and frustration, the minute codes of physical and emotional contact to which, in this space, all hope and desire is wired."         Effleurage.

(Leeds, MA): Gehenna Press, 1989. Quarto. (13)pp, (25)ff. A collection of etchings of cats by the Italian artist Anna Maria Bartolini, some of which are printed on pink mulberry paper and tipped in. All are signed by the artist in graphite. Some of the cats are anthropomorphized, and others abstracted into bold lines. Bartolini's cats are expressive, with individual personalities and characteristics: one, with long eyelashes, gazes wide-eyed at a winged insect, while another narrows its eyes hungrily at a fish dangling from a hook. The etchings were printed in Florence, Italy. In the Introduction, the Florentine poet and novelist Mario Graziano Parri explores the roles and symbolism of cats throughout history. He writes of Bartolini, "The Author of the engravings which are the reason for this book does not love cats. She is attracted rather by their mystery." Although not called for, this copy has been inscribed on the colophon by Leonard Baskin to a well known collector of cat books. About fine in gray patterned paper over flexible boards, with a gilt-titled gray morocco lettering piece to the spine. Housed in a matching darker gray box covered with patterned paper, which shows some rubbing to extremities. A scarce title from the Gehenna Press.

A narrative of the shipwreck of the Oswego, on the coast of South Barbary, . London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown (printed by Andrew Strahan), 1818. 4to. 20th-century tan goatskin morocco.

      - C. Carmer, The Hudson (1989), pp. 123-126; Gay 1260. First British edition, published in the same year as the first American edition, of a detailed narrative of the wreck of the 260 ton American ship Oswego off the coast of Africa near the Canary Islands on 28 March 1800 and the capture of the captain and crew by a party of seven armed Islamic hunters armed with guns and daggers. It was written by the ship's Quaker captain Judah Paddock, whose detailed description of their months in captivity provides a wealth of information about Islamic culture in a region where few Europeans or Americans had ever ventured. Their captors forced them to march inland through the desert for five or six days, where they sold the white prisoners to nomadic shepherds but chose to keep the two black prisoners for their own use and departed with them. With minor foxing (mostly in the title-page and final leaf), some worm damage in the gutter fold of the first and last quire, and a few leaves with a corner torn off, but still in good condition. Binding with a small worm hole and a few superficial scratches and scuff marks, but also good. A fascinating and informative story of life in the captivity of nomads in the western Sahara.

These new impressions, the first to be taken from the original copperplates since Bauer's 1813 edition, were printed a la poupee and hand-finished in watercolour... Modern names and place of publication have been researched by Dr. Christopher Humphries.Only three parts of the original work were published, each limited to fewer than 50 copies, comprising a title, dedication (to Sir Joseph Banks), 3 pages of text and 15 plates

Illustrationes florae Novae Hollandiae sive Icones Generum quae in Prodromo Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen descripsit Robertus Brown.

London: Alecto Historical Editions, 1989. Very large folio, 624 x 490mm, with a series of 15 engraved plates after Bauer, in two states, sepia and bound, or hand-coloured (by Karen Lightfoot or Helen Wellard) and unbound; number XV, in the original cloth-backed marbled boards, the coloured plates loose within window mounts, all contained within a single very large green morocco-backed solander box, by Aquarius. One of just 35 numbered copies (this copy is numbered XV): Ferdinand Bauer's wonderful botany of the Flinders voyage, with the plates in two states - uncoloured (sepia) and coloured. This is an exceptional modern publication, highly limited, which makes use of the original copper-engraved plates to recreate Bauer's extraordinary, rare and beautiful work on the botany of Australia. This is the only printing to have been done from the original plates since their first use of them for the original 1813 edition.'The 15 plates which make up this publication were stipple-engraved on copper by Bauer between 1806 and 1813 after his watercolours drawn from nature on Captain Matthew Flinders' circumnavigation of Australia in HMS Investigator 1801-1803. Both plates and watercolours are now in the collection of the British Museum (Natural History)... '. These new impressions, the first to be taken from the original copperplates since Bauer's 1813 edition, were printed a la poupée and hand-finished in watercolour. The original printing of Bauer's work in 1813 is exceptionally rare today. "Probably less than 50 copies... were issued" (Great Flower Books, 1990). Both Stafleu and Great Flower Books note that Ferdinand Bauer engraved the plates himself; according to Bauer's elder brother, the amount of work involved was too much for Ferdinand and he was forced to suspend the project after only three parts were published as he could not find competent engravers to complete the work.Born in Feldsberg, Austria in 1760, Ferdinand was the son of the court painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein. He was trained in botany at the monastery of Feldsberg under the protection of Norbert Boccius (1729-1800). Ferdinand was later sent to study at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Schonbrunn Palace before travelling to England and studying with John Sibthorp, the celebrated Professor of Botany at Oxford.Bauer's first published work was the famous series of engravings that he made for Sibthorp's great Flora Graeca -described by Joseph Hooker as "the greatest botanical work that has ever appeared" (On the Flora of Australia, 1859). His talent soon caught the attention of Sir Joseph Banks who was involved in the preparations for Matthew Flinders's voyage in the Investigator, which was to make the first circumnavigation of Australia. Ferdinand was invited to be the expedition's artist, whilst the botanist on this momentous expedition was Robert Brown. In 1801 Bauer was employed on the coastal survey of New Holland carried out under the command of Captain Flinders. In 1803, after the Investigator was condemned as unseaworthy, Flinders left for England to obtain another ship to complete the expedition. Bauer and Brown, however, continued their travels in Australia. They were an ideal team, Brown describing the collected specimens and Bauer sketching and painting them. Bauer continued, collecting and sketching on Norfolk Island and in New South Wales, while Brown went south to Van Diemen's Land. They finally returned to England in 1805 with several thousand botanical specimens and many hundreds of sketches of plants.Sir Joseph Banks persuaded the Admiralty to pay Ferdinand to work on a selection of the plates for publication, and the book was prepared in three parts of five plates each. Both coloured and uncoloured copies of the book were issued in 1813. Ferdinand returned to his native Austria and died in Vienna in 1826. In fine condition.

Tiger lily].[Netherlands, ca. 1780?]. Watercolour on a half sheet of laid paper (42.5 x 27.5 cm), mounted on wove paper. In a passepartout.

      - Cf. Christie's, Dutch, Flemish and German drawings (Amsterdam, 21-11-1989), 126-129; for Gevers: Engel, Alphabetical list of Dutch zoological cabinets and menageries, pp. 93-95. Attractive watercolour drawing of one of the several similar looking species of lily known as tiger lily, with their particular spotted red/orange flowers, probably Lilium lancifolium, native to Japan and other parts of Asia. The drawing is not signed, but can be attributed to the Dutch flower painter Jan Jansz. van der Vinne (1734-1805), one of the members of a family of notable artists. The old reference number ("3.11.66 Gevers") indicates it belonged to a member of the Dutch Patrician family Gevers, all known collectors. Dozens of botanical drawings by the Van der Vinne family ended up at a Christies auction in 1989, but it didn't include our present drawing. This sale did include four other watercolours by Jan Jansz. van der Vinne, each with a Gevers reference number very close to the present and three with the same C & I Honig countermark. With only some thumbing on the mounting paper, otherwise in very good condition.

Vingt prophéties de Michel de Nostradamus, derniérement trouvées manuscrites dans une célèbre bibliotheque des Pays-Bas. Avec explication et figures.Liège, [ca. 1789]. 8vo. With 20 engraved emblems at the beginning of each chapter, several by Pieter Balthazar Bouttats. Contemporary mottled tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine, marbled edges.

      - Chomarat, M. & J.-P. Laroche, Bibliographie Nostradamus (Baden-Baden 1989) 372; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first edition of a work containing 20 adapted prophecies of the French apothecary and seer Michel de Nostradamus (1503-1566). Nostradamus's predictions, first published in 1555 as Les proheties, are here edited by an anonymous author, giving an explanation and opinion of each prophecy. Each prophecy is preceded by an oval emblematic engraving, of which 6 are signed by the Antwerp-based engraver Pieter Balthazar Bouttats (1666-1756). Since the engravings don't relate to the text, they were probably originally made to illustrate an earlier work, and were reused in the present work. With bookplate. Browned, with some occasional small spots or stains, but otherwise in good condition. Binding worn along the extremities, bottom of spine damaged.

Norton, New York 1989 - First edition of the author's second book and first collection of short stories. Octavo, half cloth. Near fine in a fine dust jacket. Inscribed and dated by David Foster Wallace on the front free endpaper. "With this collection of stories, David Foster Wallace, the author of the novel The Broom of the System, proves himself a dynamic writer of extraordinary talent, one unafraid to tackle subjects large and small .Wallace is nothing if not audacious. Real-life heroes, villains, historical figures, sports legends, television personalities—even dinosaurs—appear in these stories alongside his fictitious characters, who themselves run the gamut from banal to psychotic When Wallace is at his best he is undoubtedly among the very best" (New York Times).
