Np. 1989. [Np]. 1989.. Original 16 x 20" black & white photograph (image size 12 x 18" landscape orientation). One corner faintly bumped, otherwise fine. A vintage print of this superb photographic portrait of Burroughs, taken at his shooting range. Burroughs, wearing a hat and combat jacket, with automatic pistol in hand, is standing in front of an array of bullet-riddled targets, framed by the larger rough timber and log backstop, facing the camera directly with a broad, closed- lipped grin. Inscribed by the photographer on the verso: "For Walter Reuben - Merry Xmas From Nelson Lyon '89." Lyon, screenwriter, producer, and former SNL writer, was associated with Burroughs on a number of projects, including the recording, DEAD CITY RADIO, and the audio- book version of NAKED LUNCH. According to the recipient of this print, Lyon made about six exhibition quality prints of this photograph in 1989, like the one in hand, all for presentation; subsequently, the photograph has been reproduced in books about Burroughs, and was used as the Burroughs obit photo by the SF CHRONICLE. Later printings of the photograph have been exhibited and sold through galleries. Burroughs contributed an introductory note to the 1979 catalogue of Reuben's Kerouac Collection.

1989. CONOVER,CHRIS. ORIGINAL ART: MOTHER GOOSE AND THE SLY FOX / VILLAGE SCENE. Offered here is a finished watercolors used in Conover's book published in 1989 entitled Mother Goose and the Sly Fox. The piece is large - image measure 19" wide x 8 1/2" high on artist board 22 x 11 1/2, signed. It is incredibly wonderful both in imagry and execution. The piece is an elaborate rendering of the village with stores, restaurants and even a herring kiosk for the cats. Across the river we see the "bad" part of town where the foxes live, practicing 3-card monte. It appears in the book as a double page spread on pages 8-9, Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers many books.

Survival in Sarajevo: Jews, Bosnia and the Lessons of the Past [SIGNED]

Central Europe Center Berlin: Central Europe Center, n/d. Hardcover. vg. 1/20. Portfolio of 13 silver gelatin prints, matted, captioned by hand and signed. Images 12 x 16 inches. B/W photographs documenting buildings and people in Sarajevo 1989 and 1993-1994, including a Muslim boy evacuating out of Bosnia to Israel with the help of Jewish-sponsored rescue convoys. Evocative images include Jacob Finci, President of LA Benevolencija in the Jewish Museum of Bosnia; Zayneba Hardaga, the first Muslim to receive a righteous gentile award; keys taken by Jews leaving Spain in 1492 from the collection of the Jewish Museum of Bosnia; Sarajevo University Library, and the Sarajevo Jewish Cemetery, which was the front line of the Bosnian War. The project was underwritten by The Doron Foundation (Tel Aviv) Mordechai Mevorach (director) and The Righteous Persons Foundation (Santa Monica) Steven Spielberg (chairman). Fine condition. Housed in original gray linen clamshell box, bumped with some cloth separation along rear hinge. As a documentary photographer specializing in contemporary Jewish life in Central Europe, when Sarajevo was besieged I wanted to see how a post-Holocaust Jewish community would react to war and "ethnic cleansing'" for the second time in fifty years. I wondered; would all the Jews leave? would those remaining lock their doors, letting their neighbors fight it out among themselves? After all, this was a war between Serbs, Croats and Muslims, in which the Jews play no contentious part. and while the majority of Jews fled the city, a vital core remained to stand with their friends and neighbors. Working together, they have turned history on its head, because for the first time during a modern European war, Jews are saving and protecting Christians and Muslims, wherever, whenever they can." Mounting remnants on back flap. Fine condition. (4) Cacheted envelope, 6.5” x 3.5”, engraved in the upper left “The Speaker’s Rooms / U.S. House of Representatives / Washington, D.C. 20515,” signed in ink “Tip O’Neill,” picturing Thomas P. O’Neill, captioned “Sworn In As Speaker / January 4, 1977." The envelope bears O’Neill’s engraved frank as a Member of Congress and bears a bulls-eye Washington, D.C., January 4, 1977 cancellation. On verso is a receipt stamping: “Received / 1977 Jan-4 PM 5:29 / Office of the Postmaster / U.S. House of / Representatives.” O’Neill, a Member of Congress since January 3, 1953, served as Speaker from January 4, 1977 until January 3, 1987; he did not seek reelection in 1986. Fine condition. NOTE: Each Inauguration Cover was signed before it was postmarked. The incumbent President of the United States has not had the franking privilege since 1873. Former Presidents have routinely been granted the franking privilege by statute, and in 1958 a general statute was passed providing franking privileges for all former Presidents. Accompanied by: (1) Photocopy of an April 12, 1978 typed letter from Speaker O’Neill to General Lewis F. Shull. In full, “This is to confirm that you own a Jimmy Carter Presidential Free Frank Cover cancelled on his Inauguration Day. Only six of these exist. These were prepared and cacheted by you and handed to me on Inauguration Day. I had the President frank each envelope with his signature, returned them to you in the Capitol, and you took them to the Benjamin Franklin Post Office where they were canceled. You returned them to me. I gave them to the President, and he kept three and returned the balance to me. Of these, I gave you one. I subsequently had one copy sold in a charity auction. Sincerely, ‘Tip’ O’Neill.” (2) Photocopy of an undated statement from former Speaker O’Neill headed “Letter of Provenance for / Inaugural Free Frank Covers of 1989.” In full, “The accompanying cover with cachet was signed on the 20th of January 1989 by President George Herbert Walker Bush moments after he was sworn into office as the 42nd [sic, 41st] President of the United States, at a luncheon in the U.S. Capitol hosted by Speaker of the House, Jim Wright. Before a nationally televised audience President Bush signed this, and several other covers, including one signed with Mrs. Bush [THIS ONE!]. This occurred immediately after he signed the book nominating various members of his Cabinet. The covers were returned to me and given to my good friend Lewis F. Shull who went directly to the Postmaster of the House, Mr. Robert V. Rota. Arrangements had been made with the Postmaster General for the special Inaugural cancel to be in his possession in his office. The special cancel was applied over President Bush’s signature. The covers were then returned to me. I presented several to Lewis F. Shull and several to the President. I am giving the remainder of the covers to my grandchildren. The cover attached is one of those signed on the 20th of January 1989 by President George Herbert Walker Bush. Thomas P. O’Neill, Jr.” Provenance: Directly from the son of Lewis Shull, former President of the American Stamp Dealers of America and a poker-playing buddy of House Speaker Tip O’Neill. Included is a photocopy of an article from the January 10, 1987, issue of “The Stamp Wholesaler,” picturing Shull, O’Neill, and recently retired Chief Justice Warren E. Burger. From the article: “O’Neill was presented with a block of 10 of the 3c Supreme Court stamp (Scott #991 issued in 1950) that had been autographed by the nine active justices and retired Chief Justice Burger and mounted on Burger’s stationery. Burger was presented with two blocks of six of the 3c US Capitol stamp (#992 issued in 1950) mounted on the speaker’s stationery. It had been autographed by the Democrat and Republican leaders of both the Senate and the House … Shull had known O’Neill for many years and helped interest him in collecting covers autographed by visiting dignitaries.”
