Emlyn Williams celebrated play, "Night Must Fall" Collection

1988. . Emlyn Williams, in full George Emlyn Williams was a Welsh-born actor, playwright and author of some highly effective, often macabre plays. He give the world his celebrated plays, "The Corn Is Green," and "Night Must Fall". He became the actor Charles Dickens reportedly always wished to be when he became "Emlyn Williams as Charles Dickens" in a venerated series of one-man shows. This Emlyn Williams collection includes 1 Typed Theatre Script ; 4 Books ; 2 Ephemera and 1 Photo. Time period covers is primarily 1935. All material is related to Williams's celebrated play, Night Must Fall, a psychological thriller, when he became an overnight star. Williams played the lead role of a psychopathic murderer. The play was noted for its exploration of the killer's complex psychological state, a step forward for its genre. It was first performed in 1935 and then made into a film in 1937, 1954, and 1964. The 1937 film by MGM, which starred Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, and Dame Mae Whitty, was named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review. 1 Typed Theatre Script; • Original typed theatre script of A Night Must Fall, SM's copy (stage manager's copy), page size: 7-1/2 x 13 inches, 54 blank pages with SM's handwritten notes and amendments, plus 45 pages with typescript of the play.. Produced by Miles Malleson, the original production of Night Must Fall premiered May 31, 1935, at the Duchess Theatre in London. The formal West End opening was preceded by a preliminary tour of Edinburgh (April 29, 1935), Newcastle and Glasgow. The play ran in London for 436 performances. No date. Presumed a London copy of the typescript for the play based on handwritten notes with British spelling with examples such as "with snaps (photos) and letter". Perfect bound, preliminary leaves nicely repaired, with Williams's signature on a paper label. 4 Books; • Night Must Fall: A Play in Three Acts. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1935. Black cloth, orange label on spine. Signed by Williams on the front free endpaper and by all the cast who are named, apart from Eric Stanley, whose place appears to have been taken by Marcus Barron, whose signature is present. Tipped in is the Duchess Theatre printed label stating that Jack Knight will take Basil Radford's part in Mr. Radford's unavoidable absence. However, Radford has signed where the other cast members have signed, but Jack Knight has not. Apart from a little light foxing to the top edge and fore edge, this is a near fine copy, in a slightly spotted dustwrapper, which shows some neat internal repair, but which is not price clipped. • Night Must Fall. New York: Random House, n.d. 144 pp. Probably a first American edition, with no statement of printing on the copyright page (see below). Inscribed just after the play closed on Broadway by the author and star of the production, "To Vincent, with all the best from Emlyn, New York November 1936." A very good copy in cloth covers with mild edge wear. Dust jacket with edge wear, small edge chips, spine faded. Based on the jacket copy, this edition was published between the close of the British run and the opening of the American production (September 1936). While a sensation in London, with the production running 436 performances, the American run lasted just two months. • Night Must Fall. Samuel French, 1935. 147 pp. Grey, pictorial card. Noticeable foxing, tanning and handling marks with dog-eared corners. Intermittent annotations with inserted file dividers throughout. Tanning along spine with moderate rubbing, foxing and wear over surfaces. Chipping along edges with pencil marking at front and general warping. Note signed by Williams affixed to the front pastedown. • Night Must Fall. Samuel French, 1935. 100 pp. Softcover. circa 1988 ISBN 0573612994 2 Ephemera; • 2 programs of Night Must Fall: Duchess Theatre, under the joint direction of J.P. Mitchelhill and J.B. Priestley, produced by Miles Malleson, with Williams acting in his own play, September 1935; Charles Macdona's presents, produced by Glen Byam Shaw, at the Cambridge Theatre, in its second year, 21 September 1936. 1 Photo; • A signed photo postcard of Williams in his play, Accolade: "To Mrs Ventriss and the Partridges warm regards Emlyn." All material housed in a handsome custom-made clamshell box. This Collection is on consignment with LDRB.

Zweiwochenschrift. Hrsg. von Hans Leybold (Nr. 5 hrsg. von Franz Jung). 1. Jahrg., Hefte 1-5. [Alles Erschienene.]

Gegen literaturbehaftete Oberlehrer, kunstsinnige Kritiker, allgemeine Rundschauer. In summa: Gegen Zuständliches. Und fügte hinzu:Nichtschriftsteller heraus! Keine Literaten sollen gezüchtet werden. Da hatte man die Revolution! Da war sie. 20 Jahre alt war der Kerl. Sehr hurtig. Und paffte einfach drauf los.? (Die weissen Blätter. Jahrg. 2, Heft 4. S. 525.) - Die fünf Nummern enthalten u.a. Beiträge von Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Ernst Blass, Franz Blei, Max Brod, Leonhard Frank, Iwan Goll, Walter Hasenclever, Emmy Hennings, Kurt Hiller, Jakob van Hoddis, Richard Huelsenbeck, Franz Jung, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Alfred Lichtenstein, Erich Mühsam, Robert Musil, Karl Otten, Ludwig Rubiner, René Schickele. Nr. 1 an Rücken u. Seitenkanten mit kleinen dezenten Restaurierungen u. Buchhandelsstempel, Umschlag von Nr. 1 u. Nr. 4 mit schwachen Notizen in Blei.         Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Limited Edition Prints

Four limited edition prints, 17.8 X 24.3cm, by Jonathan Stephenson taken from the original wood-engraved blocks made from Tenniel's drawings for the Alice books. The blocks had only been used to make electrotype copies from which the illustrations were originally printed and hence were completely unworn when discovered in two forgotten deed boxes at the National Westminster Bank in 1985. The printing was limited to 250 sets, with each copy being numbered and bearing the publisher's stamp of authentication. We have four prints from this issue each relating to cats: 1)'The Cat Grinned When it saw Alice 143/250 2)'...and this time it vanished, quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin...' 239/250 3)'The King's argument was, that anything that had a head could be beheaded' 241/250 4)' "Snowdrop, my pet!" she went on, looking over her shoulder at the White Kitten...' 239/250 The prints are all contained within individual slip mounts that have a caption to the front. Together with the prints is the 'Preliminary Announcement' concerning the issue from Macmillan , an invitation to private viewings of the prints in 1988 and 1989 plus the original invoices for three of the four prints.

Archive of 13 First Printing Books of Poetry from Lotus Press (Detroit, MI) / AFRICAN-AMERICAN PUBLISHING HOUSE BUILT BY NAOMI LONG MADGETT

Lotus Press, Detroit, MI 1988 - Archive of 13 First Edition, First Printing books from the stock of Lotus Press of Detroit, Michigan. The Lotus Press, an important engine behind the Black Arts Movement, was opened by Naomi Long Madgett after recognizing the need for artistic and powerful poetry publishing in the Black community. Having started the press in 1972, the Lotus Press is recognized as the 2nd oldest black-owned press in the United States. The press has now merged with the Broadside Press, the oldest black-owned press in the United States. This run includes several pieces by James Emanuel, one of the 20th Century's best and most neglected poets. While his work can be a bit dark and racially charged, he is largely ignored for his tough-beat style and lack of academic principle. I must admit, his work appeals to me at a deeper level as I believe his methods speak plainly, but loudly. Also included in this run is a title from Jill Witherspoon Boyer, the daughter of the founder of the press, Naomi Long Madgett. Jill worked in an editorial capacity at Broadside Press before the merge with Lotus. This archive includes First Printing copies of:O AFRICA WHERE I BAKED BREAD by Lance Jeffers (1977 - 77 PP)BLACK MAN ABROAD: THE TOULOUSE POEMS by James A. Emanuel (1978 - 76 PP)DEAR DARK FACES: PORTRAITS OF A PEOPLE selected by Helen Earle Simcox (1980 - 104PP)A CHISEL IN THE DARK (POEMS: SELECTED AND NEW) by James A.         Wood Engravings by Gertrude Hermes being illustrations to Selborne. (Gregynog)

Gwasg Gregynog, Newtown, Powys. 1988 - Newtown, Powys.: Gwasg Gregynog, 1988. Limited Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Gertrude Hermes. With extracts from Gilbert White. Introduced by William Condry with a postscript by James Hamilton. No inscriptions etc, (x), 30 pp, 6 pls, 355*240 mm, printed on the Hedelberg Cylinder, part of the title, headings and marginal notes in brown, bound by Smith Settle, in quarter fawn cloth, gold rule, with brown on cream patterned boards, titled in gold on the spine, this is number 1 of 200 ordinary copies, then there were 15 unbound copies and 25 specials. The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least and thought by many to be among her very best prints, and published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19) Hermes, Gertrude Anna Bertha, printmaker, sculptor, and designer, moved with her husband, in 1930 to Montgomeryshire, where Hughes-Stanton had been appointed wood-engraver to the Gregynog Press. The press also contracted Hermes to engrave for them, but their production was frustrated by her inability, through deep unhappiness, to complete wood-engravings for A Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, and the edition never appeared.         Archive of 13 First Printing Books of Poetry from Lotus Press (Detroit, MI) / AFRICAN-AMERICAN PUBLISHING HOUSE BUILT BY NAOMI LONG MADGETT

Detroit, MI: Lotus Press, 1988. First Edition, First Printing. Original wraps. Near Fine. Archive of 13 First Edition, First Printing books from the stock of Lotus Press of Detroit, Michigan. This archive includes First Printing copies of: O AFRICA WHERE I BAKED BREAD by Lance Jeffers (1977 - 77 PP) BLACK MAN ABROAD: THE TOULOUSE POEMS by James A. Emanuel (1978 - 76 PP) DEAR DARK FACES: PORTRAITS OF A PEOPLE selected by Helen Earle Simcox (1980 - 104PP) A CHISEL IN THE DARK (POEMS: SELECTED AND NEW) by James A. Emanuel (1980 - 73 PP) THE ANTIOCH SUITE-JAZZ by Abba Elethea (James W. Thompson) (1980 - 36 PP) HEARTLAND: SELECTED POEMS by Ron Welburn (1981 - 67 PP) DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS by Ray Fleming (1982 - 59 PP) THE BROKEN BOWL (NEW AND UNCOLLECTED POEMS) by James A. Emanuel (1983 - 85 PP) COLLAGE by Mwatabu Okantah (1984 - 71 PP) BREAKING CAMP by Jill Witherspoon Boyer (1984 - 61 PP) DELTA DANCER by Sybil Kein (1984 - 89 PP) DEADLY JAMES AND OTHER POEMS by James A. Emanuel (1987 - 82 PP) HALFWAY TO THE SUN by May Miller ( 1988 - 52 PP) All volumes are perfect bound but for The Antioch Suite-Jazz which is saddle-stapled. All volumes sharp and clean.

        LIFE IN CAMELOT

1988. KENNEDY, Edward "Ted." LIFE IN CAMELOT: THE KENNEDY YEARS. Edited by Philip B. Kunhardt Jr. Boston: Little, Brown & Company, [1988]. Large quarto, black cloth in dust jacket. First Edition. A retrospective look at the Kennedy years as seen through pictures taken by "Life" magazine. "Life" was one of the great chroniclers of the Kennedy administration and the family, in one form or another, appeared on the cover of "Life" a record 21 times by 1988- the 25th anniversary of JFK's death. With 500 "Life" photographs, of which 100 are in color. Signed presentation from Edward "Ted" Kennedy on the front endpaper: "To Michael Katz, All the best. Thanks for your support, Ted Kennedy '93." Also with a typed letter signed from Kennedy's personal assistant, Jeannie Kedas, forwarding the book. A previous owner has had the Kennedy signature authenticated and there is a tiny sticker to that affect on the front endpaper, along with a laid-in certificate of authenticity. An absolutely terrific book on the Kennedys- even nicer signed by Ted. Fine in nice d/j. $875.00.

Zweiwochenschrift. Hrsg. von Hans Leybold (Nr. 5 hrsg. von Franz Jung). 1. Jahrg., Hefte 1-5. [Alles Erschienene.]

Gegen literaturbehaftete Oberlehrer, kunstsinnige Kritiker, allgemeine Rundschauer. In summa: Gegen Zuständliches. Und fügte hinzu:Nichtschriftsteller heraus! Keine Literaten sollen gezüchtet werden. Da hatte man die Revolution! Da war sie. 20 Jahre alt war der Kerl. Sehr hurtig. Und paffte einfach drauf los.? (Die weissen Blätter. Jahrg. 2, Heft 4. S. 525.) - Die fünf Nummern enthalten u.a. Beiträge von Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Ernst Blass, Franz Blei, Max Brod, Leonhard Frank, Iwan Goll, Walter Hasenclever, Emmy Hennings, Kurt Hiller, Jakob van Hoddis, Richard Huelsenbeck, Franz Jung, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Alfred Lichtenstein, Erich Mühsam, Robert Musil, Karl Otten, Ludwig Rubiner, René Schickele. Nr. 1 an Rücken u. Seitenkanten mit kleinen dezenten Restaurierungen u. Buchhandelsstempel, Umschlag von Nr. 1 u. Nr. 4 mit schwachen Notizen in Blei. Insgesamt gut erhaltene Folge der seltenen Reihe. - Raabe, Zeitschriften 16. - Raabe, Kat.         [Diaries and Scrapbook]: Woman's Scrapbook and Travel Diary to Europe from New Jersey

Allenhurst, New Jersey / Arizona / Europe, 1988. Very Good. Two volumes. Octavo and 24mo. 212pp.; 184pp. Black leather boards and three quarter maroon leather with pink and purple decorated cloth-covered boards with silver spine decorations. The 24mo journal has light edgewear with a small mark on the front board else near fine. The octavo journal has edgewear, bumped spine ends and corners, with tears on the spine, very good. Two journals of a young woman featuring her musings from 1978 to 1988, postcards from friends around the world, and an account of her trip to Europe in the spring of 1981. Contains poems, quotes, drawings, and other written ideas and thoughts by the author; additionally features three color photographs measuring 4.5" x 3.5" and several postcards measuring between 5.5" x 3.5" and 6.5" x 4.5". Two handwritten journals by a young woman from Monmouth County, New Jersey from 1978 to 1988 with pieces of ephemera from her adolescence. The woman was 21 when she first started writing in her larger journal. The written pieces include poems, quotes from books and movies, drawings, and her thoughts; most of which are interesting and boarder on the obscure and morbid. She frequently writes of her dreams though they are often nightmares: "Nightmare this past night-time. Left me numb- Silence in the shower." Between dream descriptions she jots down passing thoughts: "I saw the energy steaming from the top of my head and the top of my shoulder today- in my shadow- on my paper. Fan-out," and poems: "Easily distracted / you think me insane... Don't drag me down... All you are is in your pants / Why don't you wear it out?" During her visit to Arizona in 1978, she complains of the muggy weather and devotes one page to drawings of the bugs she finds, labeling them "Friends of Arizona." Her drawings are odd, one of which is a portrait of herself with the word, "psycho" written below. Another drawing is of a person holding a gun and shooting a wall covered in cupids and hearts. The words "that potential psychotic killer who comes into the library and stares at us... the unsuspected hatchet murderer awaits," are written to the side of the page with a drawing of a man. Several drawings are of skeletons and the words "Dead Head," likely a Grateful Dead reference. She returned home in May 1978 and writes how nice it is to see everyone and later writes about her friend Lois, who is featured in one of the two photographs in the larger journal. Lois is mentioned several times in both books, often commenting on the writer's actions, "You've got a scheming evil look in your eyes..." The included postcards are from friends in London, Washington, DC, Florida, New York, and New Jersey. One is a postcard from a friend of hers pretending to be James Taylor asking "Kimbo" to come see him in the movie Two-Lane Blacktop "before my receding hairline has no place left to go. Catch 'ya later, babe J.T." with a peace sign. The others include warm letters to the writer and ask how she's been and that she is missed by her friends. The smaller journal is of her trip through Europe, with her friends Lois and Ginny. Most of the book includes notes to herself on what not to do in certain places like, "walking up a hill to your hostile(sic) when it isn't even open," and "what you pack, you carry." One entry describes two men with "fat bellies" dancing with her and her friends during their stay in Leipzig, Germany: "One sat at our table and tried to communicate in German. After a bit of confusion, Sue came up with the brilliant conclusion that he wanted a kiss. I kiss the fat guy (on the cheek) and he brought us nuts & chips, to quote Ginny 'Good going!"" Most of the stories are of the joyous and interesting moments she experienced; as contrasted to her larger, more juvenile and emotional journal. Also included in the smaller journal is a color picture of her dancing. An extensive look at a young woman's interior life from 1978-1988 with wide vacillations between happiness and morbidity.
