Wood Engravings by Gertrude Hermes being illustrations to Selborne. (Gregynog)

Newtown, Powys.: Gwasg Gregynog, 1988 With extracts from Gilbert White. Introduced by William Condry with a postscript by James Hamilton. No inscriptions etc, (x), 30 pp, 6 pls, 355*240 mm, printed on the Hedelberg Cylinder, part of the title, headings and marginal notes in brown, bound by Smith Settle, in quarter fawn cloth, gold rule, with brown on cream patterned boards, titled in gold on the spine, this is number 1 of 200 ordinary copies, then there were 15 unbound copies and 25 specials. The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least and thought by many to be among her very best prints, and published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19)Hermes, Gertrude Anna Bertha, printmaker, sculptor, and designer, moved with her husband, in 1930 to Montgomeryshire, where Hughes-Stanton had been appointed wood-engraver to the Gregynog Press. The press also contracted Hermes to engrave for them, but their production was frustrated by her inability, through deep unhappiness, to complete wood-engravings for A Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, and the edition never appeared.         Richard Prince

New York: Barbara Gladstone New York: Barbara Gladstone, (1988). Fine in photo-illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Thin quarto. A unique copy of Richard Prince's first artist's book, with his 'Richard Pryor: Live and Smokin' DVD sticker affixed to the front cover, and a SIGNED, handwritten joke added to the title page, which reads: "Two cannibals eating a clown, one says / To the other ... 'Does he taste funny to you'?". Although predated by several publications, this was the first book that Richard Prince designed himself, and stands as the first example of his distinctive style of book making. This unique copy incorporates two of Prince's motifs: the time-tested joke, and the newly-invented sticker.

POEMS [1988 LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB ]

N Y: The Limited Editions Club. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. Lithograph; Width: 18" Height: 22"; Frank O'Hara POEMS 1988 Limited Editions Club Facsimile Signed By Illustrator Willem De Kooning 17 Original Lithographs Series. "The Collected Poems" of Frank O'Hara edited by Donald Allen (Knopf, 1971) , the first of several posthumous collections, shared the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry. Width: 18" Height: 22". This is a scarce limited edition of this collection of poetry by Frank O'Hara, signed in facsimile by Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist Willem de Kooning on the colophon page. This is number 375 of 550. This elephant folio is bound in black leather with stamped gilt lettering on front cover. Volume is in excellent condition. This book contains 17 original lithographs. This series of lithographs was originally created in 1967 as charcoal drawings on sheets of plastic, to illustrate O'Hara's "Ode to Willem de Kooning" (In Memory of My Feelings, MOMA, 1967). However, only three of De Kooning's drawings were used in the MOMA publication. Here the complete original suite of 17 drawings is first published in its entirety. They are accompanied by a new selection of poems by O'Hara. The text has been set in English Monotype Bodoni 135 by Julia Ferrari and Dan Carr at Golgonooza Letterfoundry and Hand-Composed by Arthur Larson at Horton Tank Graphics. The display type is Bauer Bodoni. The text has been printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The paper was made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani. Thy mylars were transferred to lithographic plates at American Atelier by Benjamin Shiff and printed under his direction at Trestle Editions. The lithographs were printed on Japanese Kitakata. The prints were hand-torn and applied with intaglio presses to the text page at Wingate Studio and Renaissance Press. This book was designed and edited by Benjamin Shiff. Black cloth clamshell case with inset gilt-lettered leather spine label and velvet lining shows light shelfwear, with lightly bumped outside corners and cracks at ends of fore-edge panel. Case measures approximately 19" x 23.5". One corner, although itself sound, has a small cloth split along it's edge. ; Signed by Illustrator .

THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE GRAPE - PUBLISHER'S COPY, SIGNED BY JOHN MARTIN

Black Sparrow Press, Santa Barbara 1988 - First Printing. Fine in a Fine acetate dustjacket. A lovely copy in the deluxe, floral patterned quarter binding normally reserved for the 26 Lettered Copies. This is the Publisher's Copy, so stated on the colophon, where John Martin has added his signature. Though Fante is now widely heralded as one of the quintessential Los Angeles novelists, by the 1970's his work had fallen into relative obscurity. It wasn't until his work was re-discovered by Charles Bukowski, at whose request Martin began to reissue his novels, that his work began to enjoy a revival. Martin went on to reissue all of Fante's out of print novels, in addition to issuing several previously unpublished works. The publisher's own copy, and an exceptional association. Lovejoy. Excerpts from a Memoir. A Commentary and Etchings by Bruce Chandler with an Epilogue by Anthony Lewis

The Heron Press Boston: The Heron Press. 1988. First Edition, one of 115 copies each signed by the author / artist, Bruce Chandler, and Anthony Lewis. Page size: 15-1/2 inches x 11-1/4 inches . Illustrated with eight etchings, most of them drypoints, some with aquatint and lift ground, one double page, by Chandler, who also editioned them. The text, set in Monotype Janson, was printed by Dan Keleher. Woodtype of the period was used for the title page. Bound by Harcourt Bindery: 1/4 blue morocco and blue linen over boards, in tan linen clamshell box; the deluxe copy loose in 1/2 morocco clamshell box, fine. The Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy, called by John Quincy Adams "the first American Martyr to the Freedom of the Press & the Freedom of the Slave," was a native of Maine and graduate of Colby College. He settled in St. Louis, MO in 1827 where he founded a school modeled on the New England classical school. He then bought an interest in the St. Louis Times, becoming Editor and Publisher. In 1832 after undergoing a religious conversion he went to Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1833, with a license to preach the gospel as a Presbyterian minister, he returned to St. Louis to start a new religious newspaper, the St. Louis Observer. He immediately started writing against slavery and was attacked by a local mob, his press being thrown into the Mississippi. this happened three more times. Each time Lovejoy resumed his publishing crusade. However, on November 7, 1837, the mob would not be denied. Lovejoy was shot and his press destroyed. Lovejoy has been a subject of interest to scholars of the Abolition Movement since that time, resulting in several works including Senator Paul Simon's LOVEJOY, MARTYR TO FREEDOM. Bruce Chandler has written the text, using excerpts from the family MEMOIR, published in 1838, Lovejoy's own abolitionist titles, his letters to his family, as well as more recent biographies. The telling of Lovejoy's bravery and commitment in both pictures and works, reprinting Lovejoy's own articles and family letters, is beautifully done. The etchings are dark and menacing; the text firm and clear. This is a thoughtfully produced hommage to freedom of the press -- an important story retold and interpreted by one of this country's fine book artists. See an Image.
