Generation of Swine: Gonzo Papers, Vol. 2

NY: Summit Books, (1988) - Wonderfully inscribed First Edition copy of Thompson at his apocalyptic best. A very close to Fine copy with but some slight stains to topedge pages in a really immaculate, Fine, non-price-clipped dust jacket. Best of all, this copy is signed, dated and inscribed by Thompson in gold marking pen on the front pastedown and front free endpaper to Erich Segal, noted author of (among other titles) Love Story. Thompson’s bold writing reads as follows: Feb. 4, ’90 — / Owl Farm / To Erich / There is no paranoia / Good luck, / HST (with Thompson’s usual flourish). A true one-of-a-kind collectible. Let\'s Get Lost: A Film Journal Starring Chet Baker (First Edition)

New York: Little Bear Films, 1988. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook Let\'s Get Lost: A Film Journal Starring Chet Baker published by Little Bear Films, New York in 1988. \"Let\'s Get Lost is a photographic documentary and companion piece in book form to Weber\'s movie about the legendary trumpeter Chet Baker that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary of 1988. An example of one the many glowing reviews: \"The miraculous thing about \"Let\'s Get Lost\" is that Weber has managed to create something that\'s both impossibly stylized and unmistakably moral (not judgmental, moral). Even as he glorifies Baker\'s persona - no, he worships it - he also undermines it. Weber shows us just how dreadful Baker could be as a person . . . and, however paradoxically, the extent to which that dreadfulness contributed to his magnetism. Those women Weber interviews all have hair-raising things to say about Baker. Also, to varying degrees, they all still love him. The two elements don\'t cancel out but rather merge to create something larger, richer, deeper: a rendering of an artist that is itself a work of art, and a moral portrait of a hopelessly amoral man.\" (Mark Freely - The Boston Globe - \"The Lasting Allure of Chet Baker\"). Containing numerous film stills and archival photos from Weber\'s brilliant documentary and measuring approximately 13 x 10.5 inches, the book is bound in wire stitched photographic self-wrappers. The book is in FINE condition with very small nicks to the head and heel of the spine as is common with this title.

        The Skottowe Manuscript

Sydney: Hordern House, 1988. Small folio, 2 volumes (80 & 112 pages), with 27 full-page watercolours and 26 pages of manuscript in colour-facsimile; bound in black cloth, with a slipcase. With a foreword by Sir David Attenborough, commentary by Tim Bonyhady and notes by John Calaby. This is the first and only publication of The Skottowe Manuscript since its creation in 1813. Thomas Skottowe, an early colonial official, and convict artist Richard Browne compiled a remarkable record of the birds, animals, insects, reptiles, and fish of the New South Wales region. Each of Browne's 27 watercolours is accompanied by a page of description in which Skottowe records his own excited comments and the native name for the subject. A companion volume by author and historian Tim Bonyhady place the manuscript in its historical context. Celebrated as the best designed, illustrated adult book in the Australian Book Publishers Association Design Awards, The Skottowe Manuscript is a rare and valuable collector's piece. It is also a remarkable natural history of New South Wales. Sir David Attenborough writes in his foreword that the book's beauty lies in it reproduction of "… a land full of marvels seen with wonder and innocence". Number 96 of an edition of 550.

INSCRIBED COPY of What Mad Pursuit and Additional Signed Letter Archive

New York: Basic Books, Inc, 1988. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. First Edition. An archive of material containing several signed letters from Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute as well as an inscribed copy of Crick's book, What Mad Pursuit. Francis Crick presented Friedman with an inscribed copy of his book What Mad Pursuit in October 1988. Friedman sent Crick a check for the book, which Crick signed (a note from Friedman to that effect is included in the archive). Several years later, Friedman in 1993 approached Crick attempting to learn about reprints of his 1953 paper. In 1997, Friedman asked and received permission from Crick to pubish a photograph of Crick in his book, "Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries". 2 letters signed by Crick note these events. The specifics of the archive follow with a brief history. Crick, Francis, WHAT MAD PURSUIT: A Personal View of Scientific Discovery, Basic Books: New York, 1988, First edition. INSCRIBED by Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute. WITH several SIGNED letters and a SIGNED check. Today the term DNA is a household word, a word we associate with the continued battle against disease, the continuing understanding of our own workings as a human machine, and to those of us who are interested in the seminal inventions of the 20th century, with the Giants who discovered DNA: Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin and RG Gosling. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. What Mad Pursuit contains Francis Crick's account of that remarkable journey, and it gives us a rather personal window into the man. This particular copy is INSCRIBED to Meyer Friedman, who is probably best known as the co-developer the theory of the "Type A" behavior, and who opened up the field of inquiry into the mind-heart (or mind-body) connection that has also became a part of our popular culture. It is a fascinating connection between 2 scientists. One who is looking at the macro or "top-down" world of how we work as humans, and the other who is looking at the micro, or "inside-out" way of how we work as humans. This archive includes several letters SIGNED by Crick to Friedman. The book is inscribed to Friedman in 1988, and was given to Friedman by Crick. The archive includes a note Friedman wrote indicating he afterward sent Crick a check for the cost of the book: "I admit I also sent him the check to get his signature on its reverse side. I was fortunate." The signed check is also included. 2 further letters between Crick and Friedman are included in the archive. The first from 1993 is responding to a query by Friedman about reprints of his 1953 paper. The second grants permission to Friedman to publish Cricks photograph in a book Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries. In all, 5 pieces (with 4 signatures by Crick). What Mad Pursuit is very good in dj, noting some spine slant, what appears to be a coffee stain on the fore-edge, and sun-fading to the dj in several places. A small fine black ink mark on p. 69 with very short related note inked on rear endpaper (both from Friedman). The 2 letters from Crick are Fine noting the usual folds for mailing. Friedman's note is very good and the check is good with a paperclip indentation through Crick's signature. A nice archive, and worthy of addition to any strong collection of 20th century medicine. Hard Cover. Signed by Author.

Higher Than Hope : The Authorized Biography Of Nelson Mandela

Hamish Hamilton, London 1988 - 8vo, pp. 429. Original black boards, lettered in gilt on spine. Very light spotting to top edge, otherwise a fine copy in a dustwrapper sunned at the spine, but otherwise near fine. First edition, WARMLY INSCRIBED TO PETER HAIN BY DONALD WOODS: 'For Peter, on your 40th birthday, an appropriate gift -- your personal contribution to the goals and the liberation of Mandela will never be forgotten. 17/2/1990 Donald and Wendy Woods.' Donald Woods began his professional life in South Africa as a cub reporter on the radical newspaper The Daily Despatch, and rose through the ranks to become its editor in 1965. He was close friends with the Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko, murdered by police in 1977. Woods' secretly-taken photographs of his friend's battered exposed the government cover-up of the cause of Biko's death. Peter Hain's parents were radicals active in the Liberal Party of South Africa. By the age of nineteen Hain was chairman of the Stop The Seventy Tour campaign and, at great personal risk, led protest marches and pitch invasions of South African rugby and cricket tours in order to oppose apartheid. In 1972 he was sent a letter bomb, which failed to explode. Having emigrated to Britain he became a founder member of the Anti-Nazi League in the late 1970s. (He was also a vice-president of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, forerunner of Stonewall). He migrated from the Liberal Party to Labour, and served in a number of Cabinet positions under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Nelson Mandela was released from prison on 11 February 1990; six days later Donald Woods presented this book to Peter Hain to mark Hain's 40th birthday, the two men's joint struggle, and, crowningly, one of the most joyous events of the twentieth century. A wonderful association copy, affectionately inscribed by one hero of the anti-apartheid movement to another.

        Eccentric Books (exhibition catalog)

Yale University Library, New Haven, Conn. 1988 - "An astronomy book from 1474 has two wheels that turn to show the movements of the moon," wrote Carolyn Battista in the New York Times of March 27, 1988. "An 1850 work on obstetrics has 50 flaps that lift to reveal anatomical details. . . These are among about 150 unusual works in an exhibit called 'Eccentric Books' at the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale. The exhibit catalogue defines eccentric books as those 'with movable parts, strange shapes and unique accessories.' In keeping with the eccentric spirit, the catalogue has not only an informative text, but also a pop-up paper dinosaur." (In fact, the pop-ups must have varied; our copy in hand contains a yellow pop-up bicycle.) "The catalogue and the exhibit are the work of Gay Walker, the curator of the library's Arts of the Book Collection," Ms. Battista continues. " 'They have a tradition going back to the beginning of print,' said Ms. Walker, whose lecture on eccentric books for a Meriden book group led her to assemble the exhibit at the Sterling Library. For the exhibit, Ms. Walker said she sought the 'truly eccentric' books that were unusual in ways beyond content, typography, size, bindings or printing materials. She approached librarians at Yale and elsewhere. . . She . . . chronicled for the catalogue text the development of such forms as fold-outs and pop-ups. Now, under Sterling's vaulted Gothic-style ceilings, display cases are filled with books whose peculiar components educate, entertain and surprise. . . . At the exhibit, Ms. Walker pointed out books with volvelles, or rotating wheels. The earliest in the exhibit is the 'Kalendar,' published in 1474 in Germany. It has two movable disks -- hand-colored woodcuts -- that show the travels of the moon. Displayed nearby is the 'Astronomicum Caesareum,' which Ms. Walker called the most magnificent example of volvelles in the exhibit. Dealing with stellar movements, it contains 21 volvelles and was made in 1540 by Petrus Apianus, the royal astronomer to King Charles V, who was sufficiently impressed to pay Apianus 3,000 florins and grant him a patent of nobility. . . . Among the oddly shaped books are . . . a program for an 1893 Harvard-Yale football game, which is shaped like a football and has a leather cover and leather lacing." We offer the softcover catalog for this exhibition, in green wraps (color of wraps apparently varied), one of "approximately 150" copies hand-bound by Ms. Walker, our copy numbered by means of cut-out black numerals on gold foil background glued to the rear colophon by Ms. Walker herself -- this copy being number 108 of 150. The pop-ups are somewhat modest but everything is intact and in fine working order. This catalog won the 1989 Division III (inexpensively produced) Leab Award of the American Library Association, the judges noting that "In addition to surveying the history of this genre, the catalog provides a useful classification scheme and extensive bibliography." 62 pp. plus pop-up.
