LES PETITES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY - Faksimile Luzern

Luzern, Faksimile Verlag, 1988.

D'Ambrosio, Joe. folio. book-in-a-box binding: black canvas rear board and spine, blue paper-covered front board, marbled paper box structure and front. not paginated. This is copy number seven. Colophon signed by the designer, printer & binder Joe D'Ambrosio. It was printed using 14pt Della Robbia type on Rives BFK paper. Ingres marbled paper used for the box structure and endpapers. The front board creates a frame shaped like billowing sail. Behind it is French marbled paper with intersecting white cords used to suggest rigging ropes. (A Memoir of Book Design 1969-2000, page 106-107). This book is made from the limited edition plates created in 1973. In 1922, Duncan Gleason (1881-1959) created a series of copper etchings for the etched book Windjammers. Although the publisher planned 325 copies, probably not more than 100 pulls were made from the plates. No other editions or states of these etchings other than the 1973 edition printed at Triad Graphics in a limited edition of 25 numbered impressions. There are no signed or unnumbered impressions other than 10 publishers proofs which are so marked. The edition including the publishers proofs was done on Murillo paper using brown ink. There are a total of 50 trial proofs of various etchings done in black or brown ink and are marked as such. Each etching is impressed with the blind stamp of the Gallery Easel ( from the Certificate of the 1973 edition). Card from Lorson's Books & the certificate of the 1973 edition are laid-in.         METHODOS

Nantes: Pré Nian Press, 1988. loose signatures gathered in a paper wrapper, grey linen clamshell box. Pré Nian Editions. folio (15 1/8 x 11 inches). loose signatures gathered in a paper wrapper, grey linen clamshell box. (28) pages. Printed in an edition limited to 60 copies, on Johannot paper, each copy signed by the poet and the artist. A sequence of five haiku by the Scottish poet Kenneth White who lives in France and has written verses in English and in French. Each page has the English verse, followed by the French verse set in italic; the recto of each page is Bertrand Bracaval's silkscreen. Inspired by the ancient monuments of Greece, the Acropolis, Delphi, etc. The haiku catch the starkness of the Greek landscape, as do the stone-like triangles in Bracaval's square silkscreens. The French artist has also set the type. Bracaval has been awarded many prizes through nearly four decades beginning with the Prix Lafont in 1967 and most recently the Prix Robert Beltz in 2002. His works are continually exhibited and are held in such public collections as the Centre George Pompidou, British Library, and the Boston Athenaeum.

        Word Play

Cape Elizabeth, Maine:: Libby Barrett,, 1988.. One-of-a-Kind. 16 x 11.75"; 9 folios. Transfer letters printed text. Embossed images. Rives BFK paper. Laid in drop-side case. Bound in cloth over binder?'s board with mulberry paper pastedowns. Ribbon and button closure. Libby Barrett: "Each of the nine folios in this cloth-covered case bears one word on its cover. Tucked inside is an image which illustrates the word. But there?'s a twist, because I?'ve used this elegant presentation as a vehicle for some pretty basic humor — puns. Each image was embossed on an etching press using plates made of up to seven layers of mat board. "I love words and language, and I especially love it when something offers a possibility for interpretation in an unusual way. The fun of this book, to me, is that the presentation is so elegant and the puns, so silly.

1988. DINE, Jim. Glyptotek. Illustrated with 40 intaglio prints from copper plates by Jim Dine, plus a title-page print. Elephant folio, 682 x 530 mm, bound in original publisher's cloth, in original slipcase. New York and London: Pace Editions and Waddington Graphics, 1988.One of 90 copies, signed by Jim Dine. The intaglio plates are Dine's interpretations of the classical sculpture in the Glyptotek (i.e. "Sculpture Museum") in Munich, and represent some of Dine's most skillful graphic work in intaglio. "These are not academic studies of stone sculptures. Rather than recording them as ancient carvings, through his graphic transformation Dine willed them back to their original state of living beings... The urgency of the line, the exaggerated tonal variations, the large scale, and the obvious link to the great monuments in Western art history result in an expressive power that hits the viewer with full force" (Feinberg, Dine, p. 87). Printed on Zirkall Litho paper, with letterpress by Alan Kitching, of Omnific (London). The plates were editioned by Kurt Zein (Vienna) and the binding and slipcase were executed by Pella Erskine-Tulloch and Jane Rollo, Bookworks (London). Preface by the artist with a poem by him (after Sappho). In mint condition.

Housed in an attractive slipcase. Correct first issue with no Table of Contents in the book and with the silver dust jacket (price intact), later switched to a dark blue. The first printing was recalled due to numerous errors with few copies surviving, particularly in this condition. To make matters worse, there was a bookclub edition that was virtually identical to the first state, but for a paragraph on p. 34 and the price and ISBN # on the jacket. Our copy conforms to all correct issue points. Professor Hawking is widely regarded as the most important theoretical physicist since Albert Einstein. In this work he presents a succinct history of the most important theories and developments of our universe and then discusses current research and still unanswered questions.
