        What Beetle is This?

Long Beach, California:: Terry Braunstein,, 1988.. Edition of 25. 5.5 x 8.4"; 24 pages. Altered "Welcher K?fer ist Das?"book. Photomontage. Hand assembled by the artist. Braunstein substitutes humans for splayed and arranged insects. The effect in playful, pointed, and sometimes painful — and the pain in not from entomologist's pins or chloroform. Noriko Gamblin, Curator, Long Beach Museum of Art (1991): "To create a picture in the way that Terry Braunstein does is, in essence, to reassemble pieces of our familiar world into a surprising, yet convincing, new world. This process entails collecting, classifying, editing, arranging, and rephotographing pictures cut from the pages of magazines and books. That these images already exist in the media, fully loaded with specific associations, is vital to Braunstein's purpose. In recycling the images, she alters their contexts, thus confounding their usual readings and proposing new meanings...."This idea of relatedness, of perceiving one's station in terms of other stations, is at the core of much of Braunstein's art. Nowhere, however, is it more playfully evident than in her 1988 bookwork What Beetle is This? Based upon a German handbook for beetle identification Welcher Käfer ist Das? this work investigates the nature and function of classification, by juxtaposing pictures of humans with the existing illustrations of beetles. Most of the beetles pictured are impressive, exceeding our modest expectations with their luminous shells and delicate limbs. A few seem unfairly plain by comparison — although not so ungainly as some of the bug-sized, human specimens. Like people, beetles are subject to comparison with an ideal type promoted through the media; unlike people, they do not suffer the humiliations of not measuring up to an impossible standard. The aspiration to perfection is, after all, a human conceit.

[Sketchbook]: Death is as Natural as Rain

[Virginia. circa 1988]. Blank book. Unpaged, approximately 100pp. Black boards with a sticker of The Damned affixed to the front board along with three more stickers on the front pastedown. Very good with moderate wear at the corners, rubbing and a touch of loss at the spine ends. A book filled with more than 200 macabre pen and ink illustrations by what appears to be a tattoo artist/musician from Virginia who signed his work "Fishead." The drawings cover nearly every right-hand page (with a few two-page spreads) consisting of creepy clowns, skulls, wraiths, dragons, mummies/zombies, mermen, and ghouls of all kinds. The drawings run the gamut from crude sketches to finely and fairly skillfully drawn images with several finished with a high level of detail and one partially colored. Interspersed are also notes about a van the artist is saving to buy, along with various names, phone numbers (from across the country), and lines of verse, likely song lyrics. The sketchbook also contains two short holograph text pieces; one about a man forced to serve a drunken but benevolent king and another concerning Muddy Helmet, "the first country, blues, jazz, rockabilly, death rock, classic rock band." An interesting collection of drawing from an unknown aspiring artist and musician. .

FLIPPING, KICKING, HOWLING, ROLLING, SITTING, STANDING, CLIMBING, TELLING

The Lapis Press, Los Angeles 1988 - np (28pp), 1 letterpress colophon + title page, 8 color etchings. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Flipping, Kicking, Howling, Rolling, Sitting, Standing, Climbing, Telling" is the oversized, extraordinarily luxe artist's book published in 1988 by Sam Francis' Lapis Press containing eight original etchings by Edward Ruscha. Each "silhouette" image was pulled by master printer Jacob Samuel at The Litho Shop on a 20 x 16" sheet of Rives BFK paper. The title and colophon pages are printed by hand-letterpress, and along with the etchings, four blank preliminaries, and endpapers have been hand-bound by Klaus Ullrich S. Rotzscher in an exquisite debossed, full dark green Nigerian goatskin. The book is housed in a stylish matching goatskin and linen slipcase. An internally most handsome example of the first and only printing (print entries 149-156 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999") of this exquisite, exceedingly uncommon volume BOLDLY NUMBERED (35/35) AND SIGNED "Ed Ruscha 1988" in pencil on the rear colophon, as issued, showing some very mild wear to the front and rear boards along with some rubbing and slight discoloration to the leather spine. The slipcase bears some rubbing and abrading to the leather trim at the heel and crown of the opening along with some minor wear to the linen along the seam of the bottom edge. It has been priced accordingly. This is accompanied by a pristine example of the hors commerce 20 x 16" Lapis Press promotional broadside cum print for the book featuring a colored etching by Ruscha of the letter "B" (entry M-59 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999") that was issued in an edition of forty numbered but unsigned copies.         Bonjour Monsieur Le Corbusier

Zurich: Hans Grieshader 1988. 111 pp., illustrated throughout. FRENCH TEXT. The deluxe limited edition. One of 150 copies in a printed white slipcase, with a signed photograph of Le Corbusier by Doisneau in it's own card folder. Robert Doisneau was employed as an in-house photographer by Renault, a job he willingly quit to work free-lance. He was the photographer of the Résistance, documenting both the occupation and the liberation of Paris. His commissioned works for the Racho Agency put his name on the map, but it was his images of Paris streets and street life that made him world-famous. Doisneau repeatedly portrayed prominent personalities of his time (an example is the mesmerizing portrait of Pablo Picasso with fingers made of cake dough), but only the best-informed experts and most loyal followers were aware of the series of portraits of Le Corbusier made in the early 1950s. In 1988 a small extract of this series was published in a then-groundbreaking edition, that presented Doisneau's images in a luxurious yet still discreet form. Most of the time the architect, painter and sculptor Le Corbusier was painfully aware of the camera watching over him and when concentrated he playfully manipulated the camera by chosing different poses or expressions. Sometimes though, Doisneau was able to catch the modern master at unexpected moments. Reminiscent of his snapshots of Paris life, these images show us the human being that was behind one of the great thinkers and innovators of the 20th century. Fine copy in slipcase. . Fine. Hard Cover. Limited Numbered Edition. 1988. Large Square 4to.
