        I Want to Take Picture

1st Edition Atlanta: Nexus Press, 1987. FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition. "Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist..."Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money and bus tickets- and collages them with handwritten captions. The result is a kaleidoscopic impression of his journeys, taking the book out of the documentary realm and into that of the personal road trip. However, this particular sojourn does not merely connate the search for self that occupies so much of late twentieth-century American photography. It also represents a moving attempt to come to terms with some of the events that haunted his generation" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Roth 101.Atlanta: Nexus Press, 1987. Folio, photo-pictorial boards. A fine copy. Rare signed. Fine.

The spines and the exterior of the slipcase are faded and show signs of wear. The spines have wear marks. The interior is in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art of 163 objects, the majority are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen.; "The Hong Kong Museum of Art is proud to present an exhibition of pieces selected from the Tianminlou Collection of Chinese porcelain, a collection that has been assembled over the last four decades with meticulous care and discriminating taste. The exhibition features sixty-five pieces of blue and white, fifty-four pieces of polychrome and forty-four pieces of monochrome, totalling one hundred and sixty-tree objects dating from the 13th to the 18th century, they are the very best of Mr. Ko Shih Chao's acquisitions made in the last twenty years. A large majority of the pieces are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. They present a spectrum of techniques and styles, and tell the story to the constant striving by potters of Jingdezhen to refine the porcelain body, to master the intricacies of firing, and to invent new glazes from metals, a forth element provided by nature. It is an extraordinary chapter - and the climatic chapter - from the seven-thousand year saga of ceramics. Through the generosity of Mr. Ko Shih Chao the Tianminlou Collection has been put in public view. In addition to lending his collection for exhibition, Mr. Ko has also sponsored the publication of the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition. To the catalogue itself he has contributed many entries as well as one of the essays. The value of the catalogue has been enhanced by the essays contributed by Mr. John Ayers, Mr Julian Thompson and Mr Laurence Tam. It was Mr. Ko Shih Chao idea to include in the catalogue panoramic illustrations of a number of pieces so that the swept and subtlety of their designs can be fully appreciated. The catalogue is itself a visual delight thanks to the superb technique of the photographers: Mr Ogawa Tadahiro who did the panoramic photographs, Mr Wakisaka Susumu who took most of the colour transparencies for Volume I of the catalogue. " excerpt from the Preface by Christina Chu, Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, July 1987..

Prepositions. Fifteen Relief Prints in Colour, Interleaved with Texts from Various Sources.

The Artist 1987 - 30/50 COPIES signed by the artist, printed on handmade paper with the prints on Japanese Hosho paper and the text on Shoji, the prints 'cut in wood, lino and other materials' and using various colour combinations, each of them numbered and initialled by the artist, one with a tiny spot at foot, [unpaginated], quarto, sheets loose as issued in an oatmeal cloth folder by Clare Skelton lettered in gilt on the back, near fine. Laid in is a postcard flyer to a Meyer exhibition at the Primrose Hill Gallery in 1991, and an ALs (dated 25 Jan. 1992) from the artist to the book's previous owner: Meyer expresses his delight 'that "Prepositions" is giving you so much pleasure [.] I am pleased to know that my own excitement and satisfaction in making the book has been so effectively transmitted', and goes on to insist that the Skeltons should have their due share of the credit (Christopher for the typography and Clare for the binding). The prints each illustrate, and incorporate, a preposition; the nature of the part of speech is further delineated by the short textual quotations from a variety of sources - both literary and technical. The texts were, Meyer's introduction clarifies, selected with the assistance of Christopher Ricks, and the authors include William James, Emily Dickinson, Wittgenstein, Gertrude Stein, and William Empson. Meyer fled Nazi Germany and found his home in Hampstead; he studied woodcuts, etching and lithography at the Slade, where he had Anthony Gross and Ceri Richards as his teachers. In an article on Meyer, Colin Franklin reflects that 'his place [.] was with the German Expressionists', and describes this work - the second in a trilogy, preceded by 'Urworte Orphisch' in 1982 and followed by 'Superimpositions' in 1995 - as 'an obscure and erudite delight'.

        The Enigma of Arrival

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1987. First edition, first printing. Not Set. Octavo. Original black cloth-backed green boards, titles to upper board and spine in silver and gold, top edge stained green. With the dust jacket A nice copy the lightly used dust jacket. A presentation copy with the author's typically terse presentation inscription to the title page, "V S. Naipaul for Al Murray". And with some light pencil markings by Murray. Naipaul recalls in A Turn in the South, "I was given the name of a writer who had been educated at Tuskegee, Al Murray. He was, or had been, a protégé of Ralph Ellison's, and he lived in New Yorkâ?¦He was a brown man, and older than I had thoughtâ?¦Al had just turned seventyâ?¦His sitting room was full of books and records. A moment's looking showed that the books were a serious collection of twentieth-century American writing in first or very early editions."Al Murray, a Tuskegee-educated writer on jazz and one of those interviewed in "A Turn in the South," would later say, "Naipaul is like a satellite in orbit. He's got an objectivity that no one else has, and he knows that the past is an albatross." Proper inscribed, literary association copies of Naipaul's works are distinctly uncommon.

Epiphanies. Interpreted by Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company, 1987. Artist's book, one of 65 copies only, 50 in the edition for sale and 15 Artist's Proofs, all on Moulin du Gue paper and Japanese papers, with 62 etchings, employing over 150 plates, original watercolors, collage and hand cutting, signed by the artists, Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke on the stunning colophon page. Collage by Vincent FitzGerald and Zahra Partovi, etchings printed by Marjorie Van Dyke assisted by Maria Luisa Rojo at the Printmaking Workshop; lithographs editioned by Marjorie Van Dyke with Rhae Burden, calligraphy by Jerry Kelly, letterpress by Dan Keleher and Bruce Chandler at Wild Carrot Letterpress in 40 colors with type set by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari at the Golgonooza Letter Foundry. Page size: 12 x 14 inches; 94 leaves, 3 of which are double folds, one printed page loose as insert (Dreams section), two fold-out images (Death section). Bound: loose as issued in original wrappers in hand-made box by David Bourbeau at The Thistle Bindery in Japanese hand-made silk woven for this box, with incised line of Japanese tea paper showing profile of Joyce, spine of box a bit sunned; bit of offsetting from the silver Japanese tea papers that line the insides of the box o the front and back wrappers, book fine. Joyce's EPIPHANIES, the writings in his early notebooks that are the basis for his great works, had not been previously published. The EPIPHANIES are astonishing fragments of dreams, overheard conversations, and particles of experiences. In making the book, the artists and publisher divided THE EPIPHANIES into four sections: "Dreams," "Games," "Planes," and "Death." Each Epiphany is printed on a separate page with the page number printed in a different color. The four printed Introductions to the image sections each have printed on them, in the same color as the actual page number, all the page numbers that relate to that image section. Marjorie Van Dyke developed the images for the dreams and the games sections; Susan Weil developed the planes and death sections. These paragraphs and accompanying images take the reader / viewer through a series of Joyce's experiences as a boy, seeing and overhearing the world around him. Selected by the Independent Curators for the Franklin Furnace exhibition "Contemporary Illustrated Books" as one of the 50 best illustrated books from 1966-1988, it was also featured in the Boston Athenaeum exhibition, "Artists of the Book, 1988: A Facet of Modernism." This important book was sold out within six months of publication and is now infrequently available on the secondary market. It is hard to overstate the importance of this book in contemporary book arts. It is one of the first, if not the first, to entice the reader / viewer with texts and images that they must manipulate to fully see - something now a relatively common occurrence in book arts.

        Looking Forward: An Autobiography

New York: Doubleday, 1987. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. A handsome First Edition (so stated) signed by former President George Bush on a "George Bush" cream bookplate on the second foreleaf with "December 31, 1987 To Tim Strader with best wishes" in another's hand. In bright red cloth, the book is in fine condition but for the lightest touches of wear including a slight indent on the top edge, very minor. The dustjacket is clean and bright, in near fine condition with light wear at the spine head and end, very minor. Price clipped, interior flaps in beautiful condition. A beautiful copy. In the letter Mr. Bren informs Mr. Strader that this edition includes a personalized inscription just for him and that the book may be an enjoyable read as the 1988 presidential primary campaigns sets off. A very interesting extra.
