An original pen, ink and monotone drawing from "Christmas 1993 or Santa's Last Ride."

London: , 1987. Santa's Job Back Then Was Fun LE CAIN, Errol, illustrator. BRICUSSE, Leslie. An original pen, ink and monotone drawing from "Christmas 1993 or Santa's Last Ride." Image size: 4 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches. [title-page vignette and page 5]. "The world has changed, there is no doubt,/Since Santa's reindeer first set out,/In crystal skies and sparkling snow,/So many thousand moons ago./And Santa's job back then was fun./The year, let's not forget, was One". Matted, framed and glazed. In 1986 Leslie Bricusse showed David Brass a poem that he had written entitled Christmas 1993 or Santa's Last Ride. It described how difficult Santa's job of delivering gifts around the world had become in these modern times. David, who had known Leslie for many years, had the idea to create a book from the poem and introduced Errol Le Cain to Leslie Bricusse. The book was published in 1987 - unfortunately Errol Le Cain died just before the publication date. It was his last work. Errol John Le Cain (5 March 1941 - 3 January 1989) was a British animator and children's book illustrator. He won the 1984 Kate Greenaway Medal for Hiawatha's Childhood (Faber & Faber), recognizing the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject. Descended from a French-Canadian great-grandfather, Le Cain was born in Singapore but evacuated to Agra, India with his mother and other relations the following year to escape the Japanese invasion. His father was captured and interned in Changi Prison. Returning to Singapore after the war, he attended St.Patrick's Catholic school. With no formal art education, his talent was nevertheless evident from an early age, Le Cain was fascinated by cinema and made his first animated film, The Enchanted Mouse, with a friend's 8-mm camera at age 11. His next work, The Little Goatherd, was created with a 16-mm camera at age 15. This came to the attention of agents for British film distributor Pearl & Dean, who offered to pay his passage to London that year (1956) to pursue a career in animation for film and television. In 1965, Le Cain joined Richard Williams's animation studio and worked on a wide range of animation projects, including film titles for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Casino Royale, and The Charge of the Light Brigade. His most important work with Richard Williams was for the unfinished (1964 to 1992) animated film The Thief and the Cobbler. Le Cain turned freelance in 1969, working on sets for BBC television productions, continuing with animation projects, and beginning his career as a children's book illustrator. Le Cain's first children's illustrations were published by Faber and Faber in a story he'd originally storyboarded for film, King Arthur's Sword (1968), which began a long association with Faber that continued to his death. His first book "made me aware of the scope and possibilities of children's book illustration, and now I am convinced this is the medium for me". Le Cain wrote 3 and illustrated 48 children's books during his lifetime, recognized for their richly decorative watercolours and masterful command of design and colour. His self-authored works were King Arthur's Sword (1968), The Cabbage Princess (1969) and The White Cat (1973). He was commended for the 1969, 1975, and 1978 Greenaway awards before winning the 1984 Medal and was commended again for 1987. The four commended books were The Cabbage Princess; Thorn Rose, or the Sleeping Beauty based on the version related by the Brothers Grimm; The Twelve Dancing Princesses, retold from the Brothers Grimm; and The Enchanter's Daughter by Antonia Barber. Leslie Bricusse (born 29 January 1931) is an English composer, lyricist, and playwright, most prominently working in musicals and also film theme songs. Bricusse was educated at University College School in London and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge University, he was Secretary of Footlights between 1952 and 1953 and Footlights President during the following year. In the 1960s and 1970s, Bricusse enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Anthony Newley. They wrote the musical Stop the World - I Want to Get Off (1961) which was successful in London and on Broadway, and was made into a film version in 1966. Also in collaboration with Newley, Bricusse wrote The Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd (1965) and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), based on the children's book by Roald Dahl, and for which they received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song Score. Working solely as a lyricist, he collaborated with composer Cyril Ornadel on Pickwick (1963), based on Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, a successful vehicle for Harry Secombe. Later collaborators included Henry Mancini (Victor Victoria in 1982) and John Williams (Hook in 1991). As composer and lyricist he scored the successful film Doctor Dolittle (1967), for which he received an Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Talk to the Animals"), and the less-successful Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969). He currently lives in the United States, and is married to actress Yvonne Romain.

[Chun gonghua. Album of Spring Palace Pictures]

[n.p. (China)], n.d.. Accordion Chinese binding, 19.5 x 9 cm, 5 double page color images on cloth backed by thick card; red sheep covered boards slightly worn, paper title label on upper board. Boards lifting, some staining at edges of images caused by application of paint to edges. Very good. This album of erotic images show lovers engaged in various amorous pursuits. The female lover's bound feet are visible in many of the images. These albums of Chinese erotic images, which are often referred to as 'Spring Palace Pictures', appear to have had multiple uses. In John Byron's informative book 'Portrait of a Chinese Paradise. Erotica and Sexual Customs of the Late Qing Period' (London, 1987) it is stated that contrary to the commonly held belief that they were produced as tools of instruction, in fact, this was only one of their purposes. Interestingly these images are sometimes referred to as "Avoid Fire Picture" as there was, and may still be in some rural areas in China, a belief that to store such images in the roof of your house would protect the building from destruction by fire. In other words these albums were commonly believed to bring good luck. The special power of these images appears to come from their connection with fertility. Precise dating of these albums is often not possible and it is quite likely that these images were copied from an earlier work. It is likely pre-War World II. A nice example of Chinese popular culture. Chinese erotica such as this is infrequently seen in the West and typically portray gentler, more serene scenes than those often found in its more common Japanese cousin, shunga.

THE MOUNTAINS OF WALES: AN ANTHOLOGY IN VERSE & PROSE

Gwasg Gregynog, Newtown 1987 - 303 x 191 mm. (12 x 7 1/2"). 189, [3] pp. No. VI of XX copies bound by James Brockman (and 255 ordinary copies). A DRAMATIC ONLAID AND DYED VELLUM BINDING BY JAMES BROCKMAN, the vellum boards stained in shades of purple, pink, light green, chocolate, and pale gray, covers also with onlaid strips of turquoise and black morocco in an abstract pattern perhaps suggesting stained glass, smooth black morocco spine, gilt titling, turquoise suede doublures, all edges gilt. In the (lightly chafed) original black morocco-backed clamshell box with stained vellum label on spine and thick padded lining. Eight plates of watercolors by the Reverend John Parker, printed via offset-lithography by Adrian Lack. Gwasg Gregynog 16. In mint condition. Attractively printed on smooth, heavy paper by the modern successor to the original Gregynog Press and beautifully bound by a modern master, this is a collection of tributes to the beauty of the mountains of Wales by poets, travellers, naturalists, and mountaineers. Written in English and Welsh, it begins with verses from the 11th century and continues through the years, ending with a poem written in 1980. In between there are descriptions by such luminaries as Daniel Defoe, who compares the mountains of Wales favorably to the French Alps; Matthew Arnold; and John Ruskin, who says of his first visit to the mountains, "I had as much pleasure in that single day as some men have in all their lives." The watercolors of Anglican cleric and amateur painter John Parker (1798-1860), who produced hundred of paintings of this landscape, add a visual perspective to the literary tributes. For the covers of this special binding, James Brockman (b. 1946) uses the soft colors of the Parker illustrations to create his abstract designs, while still giving an impression of mountains. A past president of Designer Bookbinders and the Society of Bookbinders, Brockman apprenticed as a finisher at Blackwell's, studied with Ivor Robinson, and served as assistant to Sydney Cockerell at Cambridge from 1968-73. Three years later, he opened his own bindery in Oxford, which continues to produce notable work.         The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York 1987 - First edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Lengthily inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to editor David Kent in the year of publication, "To David Kent with thanks for a grand time and much high living in Toronto Tom Wolfe December 4, 1987." Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. A nice association. The Bonfire of the Vanities is a novel, but it is based on the same sort of detailed on-scene reporting as Wolfe's great nonfiction bestsellers, The Right Stuff, Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. And it is every bit as eye-opening in its achievements. It is a big, panoramic story of the metropolis-the kind of fiction strangely absent from our literature in the second half of this century-that reinforces Tom Wolfe's reputation as the foremost chronicler of the way we live in America. "A big, bitter, funny, craftily plotted book that grabs you by the lapels and won't let go" (The New York Times Book Review). Basis for the 1990 film adaptation starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1987. First Edition . Signed. MCMURTRY, Larry. Film Flam. New York: Simon & Schuster, (1987). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $3800.First edition of collected essays on movies and screenwriting by Larry McMurtry, inscribed to Nobel Prize winning author Harold Pinter, “For Harold, This may awaken violent memories, L.M.”“Working in Hollywood,” writes Larry McMurtry, “is like working in a city filled with immensely attractive childrenÂ… Writers are expected to come and stay, even if 98 per cent of the time they spend here is totally wasted, along with tons of money.” In the 21 essays collected here, 17 originally appearing in American Film, and four elsewhere, McMurtry offers his witty, hard-earned wisdom on Hollywood and the role of its “hired pen,” the screenwriter. Author of over 25 books and 7 screenplays, McMurtry shared a 1971 Oscar nomination with director Peter Bogdanovich for their adaptation of McMurtryÂ’s novel, The Last Picture Show. In 1983, both McMurtry and recipient Harold Pinter earned Academy Award attention for their separate works about love and infidelity. Based on McMurtryÂ’s novel, Terms of Endearment won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Screenplay Adaptation for writer/director James L. Brooks, and Harold Pinter was nominated for his adaptation of his original stage play Betrayal.A fine, highly desirable association / presentation copy.

        Andy Book

1987. First Edition . Signed. WEBER, Bruce. The Andy Book. (Tokyo: Shotaro Okada, 1987). Quarto, original perfect-bound stiff photographic wrappers. Booklet with Japanese translation laid in. $2800.First edition of Weber’s photo-essay on boxer-model Andy Minsker, inscribed twice by Minsker to part-time manager Michael Morton, once on the front cover, “For Mike ‘Motormouth’ Morton, who will lead me to the World Jr. Lightweight Title! Thanks, Andy M.” and again on an inside blank leaf, “To Mike,… I want to reassure you that you’re not wasting your time or $. You, Ed [Milberger, Andy’s trainer] and I will be a trio that Portland Oregon will never forget…Thanks again, Andy Minsker, ‘Future’ Junior Lightweight World ‘Champeen.”“In 1985, Andy Minsker was at the top of his game. Golden Gloves champion. Amateur Boxing Federation champion. He had flattened both the British Commonwealth and Yugoslav champs with first-round knockouts. The featherweight from Milwaukee had just turned pro. Somewhere along the line, he had also been an underwear model for Calvin Klein and cavorted with supermodels the likes of Christie Brinkley” (Chris Lydgate). Bruce Weber, “arguably the most influential contemporary fashion and celebrity photographer, works in a style combining neoclassic mannerism (Beaton, Horst, Hoyningen-Huene) and naturalistic reportage” (Roth, 254). In keeping with his style, Weber occasionally sought out athletes to model clothing, and had met Minsker during a photo-shoot of Olympic hopefuls at the 1983 Colorado Sports Festival. Because of a misunderstanding, Weber was prevented from photographing the Olympic boxing team at that time. Several years later, Minsker approached Weber, disclosing that he had been told by Olympic officials that “you’d give me a weird haircut and make me wear skimpy see-through clothes… That’s all I needed to hear. I’m on my way.” This engaging 1987 photobook is the result of the young boxer’s pluck. Later the same year, Weber would make a film with Minsker, entitled Broken Noses. The copy here is inscribed twice by Minsker to fast-talking Portland manager Mike “Motormouth” Morton, who was given his nickname by famous promoter Don King. Known as “the busiest professional boxing manager in the Pacific Northwest” (Oregonian), Morton managed Minsker after his falling out with Billy Baxter. When Minsker retired in 1991, he had stepped into the ring 344 times— against the best in the world— but never did capture the Junior Lightweight crown. This is author Katherine Dunn’s copy, with a manila folder of her articles on Minsker, signed by her.A fine inscribed copy, with boxing and literary provenance.
