        Andy Book

1987. First Edition . Signed. WEBER, Bruce. The Andy Book. (Tokyo: Shotaro Okada, 1987). Quarto, original perfect-bound stiff photographic wrappers. Booklet with Japanese translation laid in. $2800.First edition of Weber’s photo-essay on boxer-model Andy Minsker, inscribed twice by Minsker to part-time manager Michael Morton, once on the front cover, “For Mike ‘Motormouth’ Morton, who will lead me to the World Jr. Lightweight Title! Thanks, Andy M.” and again on an inside blank leaf, “To Mike,… I want to reassure you that you’re not wasting your time or $. You, Ed [Milberger, Andy’s trainer] and I will be a trio that Portland Oregon will never forget…Thanks again, Andy Minsker, ‘Future’ Junior Lightweight World ‘Champeen.”“In 1985, Andy Minsker was at the top of his game. Golden Gloves champion. Amateur Boxing Federation champion. He had flattened both the British Commonwealth and Yugoslav champs with first-round knockouts. The featherweight from Milwaukee had just turned pro. Somewhere along the line, he had also been an underwear model for Calvin Klein and cavorted with supermodels the likes of Christie Brinkley” (Chris Lydgate). Bruce Weber, “arguably the most influential contemporary fashion and celebrity photographer, works in a style combining neoclassic mannerism (Beaton, Horst, Hoyningen-Huene) and naturalistic reportage” (Roth, 254). In keeping with his style, Weber occasionally sought out athletes to model clothing, and had met Minsker during a photo-shoot of Olympic hopefuls at the 1983 Colorado Sports Festival. Because of a misunderstanding, Weber was prevented from photographing the Olympic boxing team at that time. Several years later, Minsker approached Weber, disclosing that he had been told by Olympic officials that “you’d give me a weird haircut and make me wear skimpy see-through clothes… That’s all I needed to hear. I’m on my way.” This engaging 1987 photobook is the result of the young boxer’s pluck. Later the same year, Weber would make a film with Minsker, entitled Broken Noses. The copy here is inscribed twice by Minsker to fast-talking Portland manager Mike “Motormouth” Morton, who was given his nickname by famous promoter Don King. Known as “the busiest professional boxing manager in the Pacific Northwest” (Oregonian), Morton managed Minsker after his falling out with Billy Baxter. When Minsker retired in 1991, he had stepped into the ring 344 times— against the best in the world— but never did capture the Junior Lightweight crown. This is author Katherine Dunn’s copy, with a manila folder of her articles on Minsker, signed by her.A fine inscribed copy, with boxing and literary provenance.

The Bowu Zhi; An Annotated Translation

Stockholm, Sweden: Skrifter Utgivna Av Foreningen for Orientaliska Stuoier, 20. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. Very good blue pictorial trade paperback. Faded cover and spine, slight wear, soiling. 1987, 8vo, [4], 328pp. Abstract tipped in, 2 errata pages tipped in. Notes pages 184-277 Bibliography of Chinese and Japanese titles pages 278-328. "This dissertation has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, it provides an annotated translation of the full text of the Bowu Zhi by Zhang Hua (232-300), an intriguing early mediaeval work that contains passages which throw interesting light on a number of fields in mediaeval Chinese scholarship and the development of traditional Chinese science. As reference to the Bowu Zhi is rendered difficult by the parlous state of the text, a full translation with accompanying textual reconstructions where necessary was unavoidable, to which has been added a brief study of Zhang Hua. The second purpose of this dissertation is to attempt to gain a clearer understanding of the textual authenticity of the various extant editions of the Bowu Zhi, and thus determine whether the Bowu Zhi is a reliable source of mediaeval Chinese scholarship. The Bowu Zhi is widely held to be a refacimento, dating from the Song or even the Ming dynasties, to which later interpolations have been added at an unknown date along with commentaries by two previously unidentified scholars. The author of this dissertation discusses and rejects the refacimento theory, suggesting that one current edition of the Bowu Zhi may be traceable to the early Tang dynasty, and also attempts to identify the authors of the two commentaries. While a full study of the content of the Bowu Zhi must await research on the hundreds of enigmatic quotations from the Bowu Zhi found throughout Chinese literature but not within the pages of current editions, in his conclusion the author of the dissertation briefly points to four inter-related topics which demonstrate the Bowu Zhi's importance in the comprehension of traditional Chinese science." . Very Good. Paperback. First Edition. 1987.

Extremely scarce.A spectacular copy of this beautifully printed and rare Lee Friedlander retrospective published on the occasion of the Lee Friedlander exhibition held in Japan under the auspices of the Seibu Museum of Art and the Asahi Shimbun.Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. Friedlander's work continues to influence photographic practice internationally, in part due to the heightened sense of self-awareness that is a trademark of so many of his photographs and in part because of his ability to embrace wide-ranging subject matter, always interpreting it in an elegance that hadn't existed prior to his work. Near Fine (soiling/foxing to the silk boards and text block and sticker residue on front free endpaper) in Near Fine dust jacket (moderate surface wear). One of the least-known outstanding monographs of Friedlander's work. Includes a portfolio from the photographer's "Cherry Blossom Time in Japan" series (previously published only in a rare 1986 portfolio of 25 photogravures) in addition to essays by John Szarkowski, Takashi Tsujii and Koko Yamagishi.         The White Rose.

Newton, IA: Tamazunchale Press, 1987. 31pp. Truman Capote's essay describes his first meeting with French author Colette, during which she gave him a crystal paperweight and inspired him to start collecting the objects for himself. The book has been specially bound by Tom McEwan to reflect the world in miniature found in paperweights. In his artist's statement, McEwan explained that his intention was to create "a contemplative, enigmatic design, something which invites the viewer to interpret, examine and explore." Using goatskin, hand-dyed to evoke the "dazzling patterns frozen forever" in crystal, McEwan created swirls of blue, green, pink, and yellow that are transected by shafts of rippling gilt tooling, much as light shines through a paperweight. The design continues onto the doublures, and the flyleaves are hand-colored with acrylic ink to match. Images of statues emerge from within the patterns on the flyleaves, their forms highlighted by more shafts of light in the form of gilt tooling. The technique of incorporating image transfer into the binding is a signature of McEwan's design style. The page edges have been decorated with acrylic ink and rippling gold. The motif continues onto the buckram box, which is decorated with more hand-dyed goatskin arranged in an abstract pattern and surrounded by gilt-tooled rippling lines. Tom McEwan was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2014 and in 2013 won first in three of the major categories in the Designer Bookbinders Annual Competition, including the Mansfield Medal for the Best Book. He studied fine bookbinding at Glasgow Metropolitan College under Jim Vallance and was the winner of National Library of Scotland's competition in 2008. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 63x44mm).
