        The Bonfire of the Vanities.

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1987. First edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Lengthily inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to editor David Kent in the year of publication, "To David Kent with thanks for a grand time and much high living in Toronto Tom Wolfe December 4, 1987." Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. A nice association. The Bonfire of the Vanities is a novel, but it is based on the same sort of detailed on-scene reporting as Wolfe's great nonfiction bestsellers, The Right Stuff, Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. And it is every bit as eye-opening in its achievements. It is a big, panoramic story of the metropolis-the kind of fiction strangely absent from our literature in the second half of this century-that reinforces Tom Wolfe's reputation as the foremost chronicler of the way we live in America. "A big, bitter, funny, craftily plotted book that grabs you by the lapels and won't let go" (The New York Times Book Review). Basis for the 1990 film adaptation starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith.

        Tom Murphy - Playwright.

London. From the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. Titled and signed by John Minihan verso with his Copyright stamp. Beautifully framed.. London, 1987. Original / Vintage Photograph on archival paper. Image: 20 cm x 29 cm / Framed 34 cm x 46 cm. From the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. Titled and signed by John Minihan verso with his Copyright stamp. Beautifully framed. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         Humor And The Presidency - 1st Edition/1st Printing

Arbor House, New York 1987 - An attractive first printing of the first edition in Fine condition in alike dust-jacket, personally SIGNED by author and former U. S. President Gerald R. Ford on front fly-leaf. Slight bumping to head and foot of spine; Humor and the Presidency is autobiographical, but it also presents ex-United States President Gerald Ford's ideas linking together one's capacity to lead with one's capacity to laugh at oneself. In a collection of essays, Ford explains how humor has eased his way through the political process and has made him a more popular figure. Ford points out that although he may not generate the humor as comedians do, he serves the important role of being the target of others humorous creativity. Included are political cartoons spanning American history from Thomas Nast to Pat Oliphant; [xii], 162, [2] pages; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Aid & Comfort: The Artists Portfolio.

Patricia Curtan and Will Powers, 1987 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this artist's portfolio which was conceived as an additional fundraising effort to supplement the benefit dinner-performance held June 8, 1987. Portfolio. 13 1/4 x 9 inches. 4 pages of preliminaries, 23 broadsides, 10 color reproductions of art work by contemporary artists; text clean, unmarked. Housed in stiff paper portfolio, printed paper spine label; binding square and tight. Fine. The initial effort was spearheaded by a group of San Francisco restauranteurs to raise money for people fighting AIDS. Ruth Reichl wrote about "Aid & Comfort, the San Francisco Restaurant Benefit for People Fighting AIDS" in the Los Angeles Times June 21, 1987 as "a rousing success on all fronts." "Writers, printers, artists and performers wanted to be part of the event. Before they were through, the mayor had proclaimed Aid & Comfort Day, and in addition to a nine-course sit-down dinner for more than 1,000 people, they had a full-scale concert on their hands." The Introduction to this portfolio states further "The Artists Portfolio was conceived as an additional fundraising effort that would draw upon the talents of artists, writers, and printers of our community. Fine artists selected current works to be reproduced. Restaurants contributed recipes, and authors who write about food contributed recipes and essays. Twenty-three printers gave those recipes and essays shape as broadsides. The printers were given the texts and the size of the printed sheet - the rest is of their own design. All of this work has been donated." A fine exemplar of this expression of the soft side of the Reagan revolution's emphasis on accumulation and luxury. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Knots & Crosses

The Bodley Head 1987 - Nice clean copy of this rare first edition, with the author's classic signature & doodle to the title page. The book itself has slight dust toning to top edge & the usual general toning due to paper quality (though not too heavy); rear flyleaf has a very slight damp mark towards the bottom but not very obvious. The dust wrapper is unclipped & clean; tiniest bit of wear to the top edge of the spine; very small water mark to the inside of the top edge of the front panel (not visible from front); slight damp mark to the inside bottom of the rear panel & inner flap (again not visible from printed outer). Dust wrapper now housed in protective sleeve, which hides these slight signs of wear. A smal, orange-red circular label has been affixed towards the bottom of the spine (same colour as printed lettering), which might well be capable of removal but which I have left as it's not very obvious). These are all minor points and this remains a very nice copy to own [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Knots and Crosses

Doubleday (Crime Club) 1987 - First U.S. edition, preceded by UK. SIGNED on title page and has the author's tic-tac-toe trademark sketch. The author's first Rebus novel. This copy was at one time in a library but appears to have never been read. Only the paste-downs and the ffep seem to have been affected. Page block and interior pages are pristine. There is a small chip on the back panel of the dust jacket that appears to have been mended - please examine all photos and ask any and all questions. Maybe not perfect - but not priced that way either. From our private collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Lionel Parts List and Exploded Diagrams 1970-1986 SUPERSET: 3 Vols. incl. 2 Vols. Supplements [model train sets / toy]

Greenberg Publishing Co., Maryland 1987 - Oversized 11.5" x 11.5" ring binder set, 3 volumes, approx. 1,500 pgs. This is the Holy Grail of Lionel parts and diagrams books; usually not available and, when it is, often sells for $700 or more (for Vol. 1 alone). This is a superset of 3 volumes, which I haven't seen offered in many years; includes two volumes of supplments (#10-25 and #26-41), all in original binders. In Near Fine/VG+ condition with some pages slightly yellowed with age, a few page punchholes pulled (clear reinforcements now applied), no marks, writing or other defects of any kind. Part 17 of Vol. 1 and Supplement #11 are replacement copies (were missing) and Vol. 3 has the sought-after 'Updated Index'. No extra charges above regular charge for Media Mail; Priority, however, may incur extra postage (this is a huge, heavy set).
