        White Chappell Scarlet Tracings.

Uppingham: Goldmark, 1987 - Octavo, original grey cloth, title in black to the spine. In the acetate jacket, with numbered card tag, in black cloth slip-case. Very good indeed.         A portrait in oil on board, SIZE: 30 inches x 22.5 inches, showing BRIAN COOK [BATSFORD] in a [? his] library, the artist T[HELMA] BURRELL, signed lower right, undated.

      - In very good condition apart from a few minor scuffs and scratches. *THELMA BURRELL is recorded as having had an exhibition of her work at the Sue Rankin Gallery, London, in 1987. A Prospectus for the exhibition is in the Courtauld Institute Library. The portrait appears to have been done from life and has a great deal of personality. The National Portrait Gallery has a few photographs of Brian Cook though no painted portrait. SIR BRIAN CALDWELL COOK BATSFORD [1910-1991] was painter, designer, publisher and Conservative Party politician. He was nephew to Harry Batsford, the publisher, and adopted his mother's maiden name in 1946. He began to paint whilst at school and in 1928 started to work for the production department of his uncle's firm, B.T. Batsford. His first dust jacket design was for The Villages of England (1932) when he was 21 years of age. He became chairman of Batsford, from 1952 until 1974 and was artist-designer of the range of Batsford books from the 1930s through to the 1950s. The distinctive, somewhat startling, colours and flat perspectives produced images much admired and collected today. Cook also attended to other features of the dust jacket such as the quality of the paper and chose a rough textured paper that did not slip from the book or the hand, as had been the case with earlier Batsford titles. He also painted images that wrapped around the entire jacket; the old Batsford jackets had an illustration on the front but the rear panel was blank and quickly became grubby. SEE also : G.         [Original Black-And-White Photograph of Patti Smith]

np, [ca. 1987]. 8" x 10" black and white silver gelatin print. Image size 7.5" x 7.5" approx. Near fine. Photographic portrait of Patti Smith by Robert Mapplethorpe. Copy belonging to Patti Smith, iscribed on the verso: "This photograph, taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, was given to my sister, Patti Smith, who gave it to my Mother, Beverly Smith who then gave it to me, Kimberly Smith." Kimberly Smith then adds her signature below. The photo shows Patti Smith seated in a studio setting dressed in her signature black with a large printed scarf draped over her shoulders. She gazes directly at the camera. We will spare the reader any attempt at a summation of Smith and Mapplethorpe's storied relationship, or even of the other iconic portraits of Smith Mapplethorpe took, and simply quote her National Book Award-winning memoir JUST KIDS: "It was 1986, late September [...] Fred ['Sonic' Smith, her husband] and I began to work on the album that would become 'Dream of Life,' and he suggested that I ask Robert to photograph me for the cover [...] In the weeks to come Robert would photograph me several times" (256, 268). According to Smith, she and Mapplethorpe had several more photo sessions throughout 1987, some for professional purposes, others personal. Given the setting and format of this photo we suspect it was intended for record company marketing. The image, however, is apparently unpublished and does not seem to have been used for any "Dream of Life" promotions. Mapplethorpe died March 9th, 1989. Therefore, this image is among the last the photographer took of his dear friend, collaborator, and muse. A haunting image, one that reveals the truth behind Fred Smith's contention, quoted in JUST KIDS, that "all of his photographs of you look like him" (273).

The Closing of the American Mind.

New York, Simon and Schuster, 1987. Lex 8vo. Original half cloth with original dust-jacket (not price-clipped). A very nice, clean, tight, and bright copy. Only minor wear to lower capital of dust-jacket. 392, (2) pp.. First edition, first printing of this classic of modern intellectual thought, one of the most unexpected bestsellers, which made Bloom the most famous university professor in the Western world. The work created an amazing stir and was heavily criticized from all corners of the Western world. It likewise received amazing reviews, creating a buzz around the work which caused more than a million people to buy it within the first year. "An unparalleled reflection on today's intellectual and moral climate... That rarest of documents, a genuinely profound book." (Roger Kimball, The New York Times Book Review); "A grand tour of the American mind" (Washington Post Book World)."The first print run, in February 1987, numbered 10,000 copies. By late spring it was selling 25,000 copies a week. It hit the bestseller list in April, reached number one by summertime, and stayed there for two and a half months. You saw people lugging it around on vacation, bumping in the bottom of the beach bag against the tanning oil and the extra pair of flipflops and the latest waterlogged paperback from Ken Follett. From the top of the bestseller list it beat back waves of challengers, including can't-miss product: celebrity memoirs, self-help books, and an authoritative guide to surviving the "coming depression of the nineties." In March of the following year The Closing of the American Mind was still a bestseller. By then nearly a million copies had been sold in the United States. Foreign sales were just as prodigious. The best minds in American publishing were boggled. Never in their experience had a book about Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Martin Heidegger outsold memoirs by Patty Duke, Shirley MacLaine, and Sam Donaldson-combined." (Andrew Ferguson, "The Book That Drove Them Crazy. Allan Bloom's 'Closing of the American Mind' 25 years later." In: The Weekly Standard, Apr. 9, 2012, vol. 17, no. 29).The success of Bloom's book was incomparable to any other work of that kind. Criticizing the American universities, and through that the modern American society, Bloom was the first to point to a trend that was to pervade all of society and ruin it from within. His seminal statement of the fall of culture and the crisis of liberal education is something that might have applied most aptly to Americanintellectual life, culture, and society at the time of the work, but which has proven to foreshadow what was to happen in Europe and what came to invade the culture of the rest of the Western world. To Europeans Bloom's groundbreaking work on the crisis of culture and education has never been more relevant than it is today. "The trends that followed the crisis in higher education that Bloom identified have only intensified since 1987: toward weaker academic requirements for students, greater specialization in the departments, a rigid orthodoxy in the university's politics and cultural life. The university we face today is still the one he described, only more so." (Andrew Ferguson)."The crisis of liberal education," Bloom wrote, "is a reflection of a crisis at the peaks of learning, an incoherence and incompatibility among the first principles with which we interpret the world, an intellectual crisis of the greatest magnitude, which constitutes the crisis of our civilization." (From the present work)."The critic Camille Paglia once called the book the "first shot in the culture wars," and whether or not it was the first it was undeniably the loudest and most ambitious." (Andrew Ferguson)

The Sandragraph: Between Printing and Painting

Los Angeles: Arundel Press, 1987. Oblong folio. 21ff., unbound as issued. One of fifty copies signed by the artist, Harry Reese. Reese's description of the sandragraphic process is accompanied by nine mounted samples of the process used in his Turkey Press books and six large prints. In 1984, using a Vandercook proof press, Reese began to make prints showing an unusual combination of relief printing, platemaking, and painting. These experiments in printmaking inspired the neologism "the sandragraph" and resulted in prints that Reese used both as illustrations in his Turkey Press books, and as separate works of art to be appreciated on their own. In brief, it is a collographic printmaking procedure whereby prints are made directly from surfaces that have been covered by cloth and acrylic polymer mediums, and the prints are then mounted and locked onto the flat bed of a printing press. An extremely fine copy housed in a morocco-backed clamshell box, which is slightly bowed and shows some scuffing at the head and foot of the spine. Reese's magnum opus, offered below publication price.

Graz: Adeva, 1987 - Kassette etwas berieben. Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 550

        Knots and Crosses

Bodley Head, 1987. 1st edition. Hardcover. Signed by the author with his noughts-and-crosses drawing. Fine, with the usual tanning of the text block, but no foxing. In a fine dustwrapper, not clipped, and no spine-fading. The very scarce first John Rebus novel was printed in a very small quantity, and now, because of the huge success of the author, is one of the crime highlights of the last 30 years. Extremely nice copy, rare in this condition.
