The Black Dahlia; signed association copy!

The Mysterious Press 1987 - James Ellroy (1987) ‘The Black Dahlia’, US first edition, first printing, published by The Mysterious Press. Signed and inscribed by Ellroy to Art Cooper: ‘To Art Cooper – with great thanks for making Dick Contino’s accordion wail again, [signature].” Art Cooper (1937-2003) was editor of GQ Magazine (1983-2003) and broadened the scope of the magazine making GQ one of the first gentlemen’s lifestyle magazine. He was famed for nurturing writers and in 1994 James Ellroy published the essay ‘My Mother’s Killer’ for GQ in which Ellroy gives an account how and why he opened the case file of his mother’s unsolved murder. Ellroy and Cooper subsequently became friends. The inscription refers to Dick Contino (1930-2017), who was a great accordionist and singer. Ellroy wrote the novella ‘Dick Contino’s Blues’ which is included in the ‘Hollywood Nocturnes’ anthology. Ellroy interviewed Contino for the novella and it was published in Granta (Winter 1994). Most likely Cooper helped Ellroy to get in touch with Contino. A great association copy of the best living American crime writer today. Condition: a very fine copy with no issues. The story for ‘The Black Dahlia’ in inspired by true events surrounding the murder of Elizabeth Short in 1947, as well as the unsolved case of Ellroy’s mother’s murder when James was only ten years old. It catapulted Ellroy into literary stardom. The first book of the ‘L.A. Quartet’ which was adapted as a film by Brian De Palma in 2006 starring Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett.         The calming of Harry. (Artist's proof copy)

Albert Park, Vic. : Lilly Pilly Books, 1987. ONE OF TWO ARTIST'S PROOF COPIES. 'The first edition of "The calming of Harry" is limited to ten numbered copies and two artist's proof copies. This edition is handwritten on French "lana" paper and the illustrations which are hand printed on Japanese mulberry paper are each individually coloured by the artist. This book is copy no. A/P [signed in pencil] Irena Sibley, 1987.' Folio, bound by Richard Griffin in full calf, with inset linoleum block prints to upper and lower board, the spine embossed 'Harry', [42] pp of linoleum block-print plates and calligraphic text (scripted by Andrew Sibley); two small corner creases to the lino-cut on the lower board (which probably occurred in the binding process), this lino-cut also lifting slightly at the top right corner; otherwise the book is in pristine condition. A stunning artistic achievement by the Lithuanian-born Melbourne artist and conservationist Irena Sibley, telling the story of a young boy whose soul is soothed by a walk through the Australian bush, during which he encounters a succession of native animals in their natural habitat. The State Library of Queensland holds the second artist's proof copy; other copies of the edition of 10 are held in the State Library of New South Wales, State Library of Victoria, and State Library of Queensland.

Teenage Lust: The 1987 Revised And Expanded Edition

New York City, NY: Self-Published By Larry Clark(1987). Second Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 150 pages. Revised And Expanded Edition of the photographer's classic. One of the most important photography books of the 20th century. The Second "Revised And Expanded" Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The Second Edition includes additional images that do not appear in the 1983 First Edition. Like the latter, it is also now rare. An austerely elegant production by Larry Clark: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers, whose front cover features the now-iconic image of a young naked couple having sex, and black titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Larry Clark. The book is presented in a scrapbook style with scrawled (instead of typeface) captions accompanying the photographs. The 27-page Diary, which recounts Clark's own wild adolescence, is appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Meriden Gravure Printing in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Larry Clark's "Teenage Lust". The definitive (and Clark's preferred) edition of the sequence of images about his second addiction: Sex. Includes thirteen additional pages, which were taken after the First Edition was published in 1983: The latter "seems incomplete to me. I prefer the second" (Larry Clark). His breakthrough, "Tulsa", about his and his friends' addiction to heroin, contains unflinching images of encounters with The Needle. "Teenage Lust" completes the picture of that experience. Its raw, erotic power was ahead of its time. More important, it remains just as powerful, if not even more so, in our Age of The Selfie, our sex-saturated culture. This is because what is finally most disturbing about Larry Clark's work is that all of his subjects are Americans who have opted out of or given up on the American Dream. His lasting contribution will always be to honor their choice rather than analyze, moralize about, or politicize it, in the cautionary manner of all other "legitimate" mainstream discourse, whether it be serious American literature, the human sciences (particularly sociology), or Hollywood pop culture. All of LC's subsequent works, including "Kids", "Another Day In Paradise", "Bully", "Ken Park", "Wassup Rockers", "Marfa Girl", and "The Smell of Us", come from this seminal collection. An absolute "must-have" title for Larry Clark collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the bottom corner of the title page, as is his custom, by Larry Clark. Impeccable Provenance: This copy once belonged to and came directly from Larry Clark. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the Second "Revised And Expanded" Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Very Good") yet command as much as $3000 because the book is rare in any condition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 101 plates. Larry Clark's "Tulsa" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Both "Tulsa" and "Teenage Lust" were selected as two of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the most influential photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LARRY CLARK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

And here's how he does it: the art of the deal. Beginning with a week in Trump's high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day, how he runs his business and how he runs his life, as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently beautifies the face of the New York City skyline. and plans the tallest building in the world. "Reads like Trump unvarnished, vainglorious, combative, ambitious, and unafraid to let us know about it. I found it fascinating all the way." - Mike Wallace "He makes one believe in the American Dream again." The New York Times Concluding chapter describes how a week of deals, selected by Donald, turned out after some time. And they just so happened to turn out pretty fabulous.
