PARIS IN MY TIME

Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2013. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2013. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 54 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 25 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously and should not be confused with the First Limited Edition. They have the same ISBN. An austerely elegant production by Mark Steinmetz and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format. Salmon cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the front board's center and maroon titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and brief Introduction by Mark Steinmetz. 11 X 14 inch silver-gelatin print encased in its own protective plastic sleeve and laid into the box. Matching salmon cloth clamshell box with photographic reproduction pasted on the cover. Printed on thick, uncoated Japanese stock paper using Nazraeli Press' "Daido black" patented ink to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mark Steinmetz's homage to Paris. Yet another photography book on Paris? Yes, exquisitely so, as Steinmetz shows us his most lyrically beautiful and personal work to date. "Paris was where his mother was born and raised, giving Steinmetz a special connection to and familiarity with the city. In the streets, parks, and along the Seine, Steinmetz plays with the conventions of the Paris photographic tradition from Atget to Kertesz. The work is Classical, but with a Modern feel that both updates the tradition and follows the path Steinmetz has set with his other books" (Publisher's blurb). Steinmetz's unique affinity for children (who dominate both his "South" Trilogy and "Summertime") and birds, two of the most vulnerable living beings, is in full view here. P is for Paris, and for Mark Steinmetz, Paris = People, Place, and Pigeons. An absolute "must-have" edition for Mark Steinmetz and Paris photography book collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in the artist's black charcoal pencil on the title page by Mark Steinmetz. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with an 11 X 14 inch silver-gelatin print that is encased in its own protective plastic sleeve and laid into the box. The print is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered, titled, dated, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Mark Steinmetz Paris 1986 12/25". This title will become a contemporary photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Like Steinmetz's other books, its value will not only keep but go up quickly over time. A rare signed copy thus. 43 duotone plates, 1 original silver-gelatin print. Mark Steinmetz's "South" Trilogy is now widely regarded as one of the greatest photographic projects of our time. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. A Perfect Spy [*SIGNED*]

London: Hodder & Stoughton. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1986. 1st U.K. edition. Hardcover. 0-340-38784-X . [nice copy, with just a touch of wear to book and jacket]. SIGNED "John le Carré" on the title page, and additionally INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the dedication page, beneath the printed dedication: "and for ______, / a prince, whether / crowned or not, / and a beloved / old chum ----" / David." The most autobiographical of the author's espionage novels, following his protagonist from boyhood into his career as a spy. Personally inscribed and "double-signed" (i.e. with both names) copies of le Carré's books are uncommon. There are those who would have you believe that a merely-signed -- I will not use that f-word -- and un-inscribed copy is "more collectible" (purely a matter of opinion) and "more valuable" (utter rot). Personally I am toying with the idea of a pricing system that will charge for lengthy personal inscriptions on a pro rata per-word basis; fortunately for you, however, I have not yet worked out all the kinks of this system, and this book can still be had at its current price, which might well look like a terrific bargain in another year or so. Signed by Author .

Autograph letter signed

1/2 page. Large octavo. Addressed to an unidentified female correspondent. Dated December 5, 1986. In French. & & Mentioning a concert tour of Germany, Spain, Norway and Holland with his orchestral works from which he has just returned and his Turangalîla Symphony; the composer also thanks his correspondent for sending the "magnificent book" on the Virgin Mary and sends excerpts [not present] from the first two pages of the 6th movement of the symphony as per her request. . A French composer, organist and teacher, Messiaen "was a musician apart. The sources of his music may be traced on the one hand to the French organ tradition and on the other to the innovations of Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartók, but right at the start of his career he found a modal system that has a completely individual sound, and to this he remained true, even when he vastly extended the possibilities of his style after World War II. He was alone, too, among major 20th-century composers in his joyously held Catholic faith, which again was unswerving, however much he came to value non-European cultures, especially Indian and Japanese. As a teacher he instructed many of the most prominent composers of the next two generations..." & & "... Turangalîla [a ten-movement symphony, 1946-1948] – his biggest work so far, scored for a large orchestra with abundant percussion and solo piano (again a Loriod part) and ondes martenot—was commissioned for the Boston SO by Koussevitzky, who, being ill, had to yield the first performance to Bernstein. Despite the difficulties in presenting a work on such a scale, Turangalîla was soon being widely played and making Messiaen known to a large international audience. Reactions to it were divided. Its rapturous love music, exultant dances, scintillating colouring and extraordinary images appealed to many; others were appalled by what they considered its vulgarity..."
