An archive of correspondence from the author

N.p.: N.p., 1986. A collection of 4 autograph letters signed by Kenneth Millar (a.k.a. Ross Macdonald), quite strong in content, addressing a wide range of topics. Also included is a very humorous response to a "Celebrity Questionnaire." Ranging from 1955, the letters typically detailed, lengthy, and thoughtful.& & Among the topics addressed in the letters are: an effusive recommendation for fellow author Dennis Lynds (a.k.a. Michael Collins) for a Guggenheim fellowship, the deal for the 1973 film version of "The Drowning Pool" ("judged by the principals involved, it looks very promising"), his reading (a long discussion of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Tristram Shandy"), reactions to jacket artwork ("'The Goodbye Look' seems to me an improvement over that for 'The Instant Enemy'"), his excitement over seeing praise from Elizabeth Bowen, Charles Portis, and even English poet Donald Davie (who called "The Galton Case" "a great novel"), a review of his work by Ray Bradbury in the Los Angeles Times, a hilarious Celebrity Yearbook Questionnaire ("Favorite Expression: 'Do not become alarmed' / Greatest Hero: Freud").& & The cornerstone of the collection is a lengthy rumination by Millar on his own standing in the pantheon of crime fiction writers. He is rueful of the fact that the Collins Crime Club editions of his novels in England put across a more "traditional" crime fiction style that leads reviewers to comparisons with Hammett and Chandler. He puts forth the idea (one that is now very much accepted by historians) that his fiction is what American critic Samuel French Morse calls "almost...a new genre." He writes: "This view of me is making great headway in this country at last," and suggests that his British publisher consider publishing "an omnibus of three or four of my best books, suitably introduced, [which might] convey a new message."& & Letters are all Near Fine, some on Macdonald's stationery, some with his typed address at the top left, all dated.

THE REAL LIFE OF ALEJANDRO MAYTA

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1986. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1986. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 310 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of Mario Vargas Llosa's finest achievements. Limited Slipcased Edition of 125 numbered and signed copies. One of only two Limited Editions published by FSG of Vargas Llosa's books thus far (the other is "The War of The End of The World") , the limitation is among the smallest there is, considering it is a major work by a major writer. The edition is now very rare. An austerely elegant production by Farrar, Straus & Giroux: Regular-sized volume format. Brown cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Mario Vargas Llosa. Cream hard board slipcase. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mario Vargas Llosa's astute psychological portrait of a modern revolutionary in the form of an account by a former friend to understand him. Through this prism, the novel examines the long, violent, and painful history of Latin-American politics. Mario Vargas Llosa is the writer/intellectual/philosopher par excellence among the Latin-American geniuses of the so-called Boom: He refuses to be categorized, labeled, and reduced by ideology, whether it is Fascist conservatism, political correctness, or Leftist academicism, what he has condemned as "authoritarianism of the Left and the Right". He considers himself an heir to the great European cultural tradition yet his work is firmly grounded in Latin America's (not just his native Peru's) history and mythology. His aesthetics and literary practice - Vargas Llosa has embraced and appropriated every literary genre - prompted Roberto Bolano, his greatest successor, to consider him an inescapable influence, among a handful of others, on contemporary Latin-American literature. That is to say, to be a Latin-American writer is to become a Classical master of language and a Modernist artist, writing in language of the highest quality and reinventing literary form and convention at the same time. Literary genres are inventions of a particular culture's idea of imagination and storytelling, "templates" that Vargas Llosa transforms into "poetic tales" (in Harold Bloom's brilliant phrase) . "He has helped evolve the art of the narration" (Nobel Prize Committee) . "Literature shouldn't be secluded, provincial, or regional. It should be universal even if it has deep roots in one place" (Mario Vargas Llosa) . A "must-have" edition for Mario Vargas Llosa collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen by Mario Vargas Llosa. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among "Boom" writers, Mario Vargas Llosa has been grossly under-valued for the longest time even though he rarely does public signings. The collectible value of his books will not only keep but keep going up. A very rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Cervantes Prize, awarded to the greatest living writers in Spanish by the Spanish Government, in 1994. Winner of the Jerusalem Prize in 1995. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. One of the greatest living writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARIO VARGAS LLOSA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374247765.

The Perpetual Orgy [Signed] [La Orgía perpetua]

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1986. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (light fading to spine extremities, as is common with this title), in a Fine dust jacket priced at $17.95 (modest age toning -- less than we frequently see with this title), SIGNED BY MARIO VARGAS LLOSA on the title page; Llosa's book about Gustave Flaubert and his masterpiece, "Madame Bovary". Mario Vargas Llosa won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat". Llosa's first nonfiction work to be translated to English, the book is quite uncommon when signed and especially so when both signed and it a condition as nice as is this copy. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY MARIO VARGAS LLOSA.

RECKLESS DISREGARD. WESTMORELAND V. CBS ET AL.; SHARON V. TIME Inscribed by William Westmoreland to William Bundy

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. About Fine in a price-clipped, Near Fine dustwrapper. INSCRIBED by General William Westmoreland to William Bundy and dated Xmas 1986: "To: Bill Bundy--/The truth at last!/I am grateful/for your support./Westy." Westmoreland, commander of U.S. military operations in Vietnam from 1964 - 1968, sued CBS for libel, arguing that a documentary it had broadcast entitled "The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception," defamed him because it asserted that he had led a conspiracy to manipulate intelligence on enemy troop sizes. Nearly three years after the suit's initiation, both parties agreed to dismiss the case. What could never be dismissed, however, was Westmoreland's aggressive role in the escalation of ground troops in Vietnam. William Bundy had a long, distinguished service in the government in the CIA and in the Defense Department. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs in March 1964. His brother McGeorge was Special Assistant for National Security Affairs to Kennedy and Johnson from 1961-1966. Both are considered primary architects of America's involvement in Vietnam. In THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST, David Halberstam stated that during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, William Bundy's name "would probably be on more pieces of paper dealing with Vietnam over a seven-year period than anyone else's." A fine association copy linking two important figures in America's Vietnam policy. Approximately 15 pages with Bundy's marginal markings.

        Hiroshima Mon Amour: Synopsis

Poestenkill, NY: (Edition Kaldewey, 1986). Folio. (15)ff. One of 50 copies, signed by Ann Sperry, who illustrated the volume with handmade paper paintings. Pink papers have been fused with dark gray and rose paper designs, some touched with gold, and others sculpted, cut, and folded. Sperry’s designs capture the seriousness, sadness, and sensuality of Hiroshima Mon Amour, a film about a French woman and a Japanese man who meet and become lovers in Hiroshima fourteen years after the atomic bomb. The film’s screenplay was written by Duras, and the film itself is considered one of the first examples of French New Wave cinema. An extremely fine example of one of Kaldewey’s most stunning books, in a gray cloth clamshell box with Kaldewey’s tower logo on the front and the title on the spine in gilt.

        W.B. Yeats/Montale

(Verona): Cento Amici del Libro, (1986). Quarto. 26, (4) pp. From an edition of 130 copies, this is one of 100 ad personam copies. Illustrated with three etchings by noted sculptor Fausto Melotti, each of which is signed in graphite. Contains four poems by Yeats: "Sailing to Byzantium", "The Indian to his love", "When you are old", and "After a long silence". These are followed by translations into Italian by Nobel Laureate Eugenio Montale. According to the colophon, Franco Riva completed the design for this book in August, 1981, but died the following month. The task of printing this edition fell to Martino Mardersteig of the Officina Bodoni, and it was completed five years later. This, then, is Riva's last book, and its straightforward elegance and harmony between text and image is a fitting tribute to one of Italy's finest printers. A fine copy, loose as issued in publisher's blue cloth folding case, which show some faint scuffs.

        A Perfect Spy [*SIGNED*]

London: Hodder & Stoughton. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1986. 1st U.K. edition. Hardcover. 0-340-38784-X . [nice copy, with just a touch of wear to book and jacket]. SIGNED "John le Carré" on the title page, and additionally INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the dedication page, beneath the printed dedication: "and for ______, / a prince, whether / crowned or not, / and a beloved / old chum ----" / David." The most autobiographical of the author's espionage novels, following his protagonist from boyhood into his career as a spy. Personally inscribed and "double-signed" (i.e. with both names) copies of le Carré's books are uncommon. There are those who would have you believe that a merely-signed -- I will not use that f-word -- and un-inscribed copy is "more collectible" (purely a matter of opinion) and "more valuable" (utter rot). Personally I am toying with the idea of a pricing system that will charge for lengthy personal inscriptions on a pro rata per-word basis; fortunately for you, however, I have not yet worked out all the kinks of this system, and this book can still be had at its current price, which might well look like a terrific bargain in another year or so. The Wedding

San Pedro: Brown Buddha Books. 1986. The first issue of this limited edition printed to celebrate the August 18, 1985 wedding of Bukowski and Linda Lee Beighle. The entire edition was only 40 copies, each illustrated with eleven tipped in original photographs of the wedding by Michael Montfort, known for his photographic collaborations with Bukowski, among his other work. This first issue is distinguished by the inclusion of the photograph of the bride kneeling to repair Bukowski's trousers and her surname misspelled on the colophon. Signed by both Bukowski and Montfort. According to the colophon, this copy belonged to Julie Curtiss Voss, mentioned by Bukowski in the text as assistant to John Martin, Bukowski's publisher and best man. Martin, the publisher of Black Sparrow Press, began publishing Bukowski in the mid-1960s and by the 1990s he had dozens of his titles in print. While this title was not issued by Black Sparrow it is likely that Martin arranged the details of its publication: it was designed by Barbara Martin and handbound by Earle Gray, as most of the Black Sparrow editions were. Fine, without dust jacket, as issued. A nice association copy of a scarce item in the Bukowski canon. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Faksimile - Tschachtlans Bilderchronik. Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Ms. A 120. (2 Bde.).

4° (30 x 22 cm), 1060 S., 230 teilw. ganzseitige farb. Bilder; Kommentarbd.: 480 S., Geprägter Ganzledereinband (Kommentarbd. HLdr.) mit zwei Schliessen., Tadellos. Vergriffen!
