        IT

New York: Viking, 1986. First edition. Thick octavo. Publisher's half black cloth with gray paper boards. Fine in fine original dust-jacket. First edition. Thick octavo. Inscribed by Stephen King. First edition, inscribed in the year of release with Pennywise the clown's balloon around the inscription: "To Sue, best wishes, Stephen King / 11/28/86." One of King's most memorable and haunting books. Particularly known for the film adaptation in which Tim Curry played Pennywise and caused a generation to suffer with coulrophobia. The first part of a dual-part remake was released in 2017, teaching a new generation to shudder at the image of a clown holding balloons. Pennywise's eerie proclamation, "We all float down here!", will be even more impossible to forget.

        Veruschka: Trans-figurations ("veruschka: Transfigurations")

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company(1986). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 160 pages. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Vera Lehndorff and Holger Trulzsch: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Art by Veruschka/Vera Lehndorff. Photographs by Holger Trulzsch. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Japan to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Veruschka's "Trans-figurations". Perhaps the single most brilliant realization of the body as artistic medium. One of the most valuable contributions of Modernist art/philosophy is its emphasis on the body (it is important to be reminded that for two thousand years, philosophy regarded the body as marginal and contingent rather than central and essential to who we are). The very first supermodel, Veruschka's personality is inseparable from her body. She (her real name is Vera Lehndorff) examines her body in relation to beauty, through transfigurations, the single most interesting idea of Modernist art. She wants us to see that there is a difference between "transform" and "transfigure": The latter goes much deeper, is more radical, and is ultimately about transcendence. Ravishingly beautiful when she produced this great book, Veruschka uses her body to create sublime works of art. In each of them, she is completely changed, often beyond recognition. She becomes the cinematic beauties Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. In other Ovidian images, she denies her humanity altogether and becomes an animal, a statue, a stone. The most haunting transfigurations of all are the Series called "Oxydation", in which her body appears to disintegrate before our eyes. "Not merely beautiful but 'about' the beautiful, as it is very much concerned with the testing of beauty, through artifice, through distortion, and through transfiguration" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Veruschka collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the author: "Vera Lehndorff '86". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Program of the event during which her signature was obtained. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and dated copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 163 plates. One of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0821216376.

The Real Life Of Alejandro Mayta: The Limited Edition

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux(1986). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 310 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of Mario Vargas Llosa's finest achievements. Limited Slipcased Edition of 125 numbered and signed copies. One of only two Limited Editions published by FSG of Vargas Llosa's books thus far (the other is "The War of The End of The World"), the limitation is among the smallest there is, considering it is a major work by a major writer. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Farrar, Straus & Giroux: Regular-sized volume format. Brown cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Mario Vargas Llosa. Cream hard board slipcase. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Mario Vargas Llosa's "The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta" in a felicitous English translation. His astute psychological portrait of a modern revolutionary in the form of an account by a former friend to understand him. Through this prism, the novel examines the long, violent, and painful history of Latin-American politics. Mario Vargas Llosa is the writer/intellectual/philosopher par excellence among the Latin-American geniuses of the so-called Boom: He refuses to be categorized, labeled, and reduced by ideology, whether it is Fascist conservatism, political correctness, or Leftist academicism, what he has condemned as "authoritarianism of the Left and the Right". He considers himself an heir to the great European cultural tradition yet his work is firmly grounded in Latin America's (not just his native Peru's) history and mythology. His aesthetics and literary practice - Vargas Llosa has embraced and appropriated every literary genre - prompted Roberto Bolano, his greatest successor, to consider him an inescapable influence, among a handful of others, on contemporary Latin-American literature. That is to say, to be a Latin-American writer is to become a Classical master of language and a Modernist artist, writing in language of the highest quality and reinventing literary form and convention at the same time. Literary genres are inventions of a particular culture's idea of imagination and storytelling, "templates" that Vargas Llosa transforms into "poetic tales" (in Harold Bloom's brilliant phrase). "He has helped evolve the art of the narration" (Nobel Prize Committee). "Literature shouldn't be secluded, provincial, or regional. It should be universal even if it has deep roots in one place" (Mario Vargas Llosa). An absolute "must-have" edition for Mario Vargas Llosa collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen by Mario Vargas Llosa. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among "Boom" writers, Mario Vargas Llosa has been grossly under-valued for the longest time even though he rarely does public signings. The collectible value of his books will not only keep but keep going up. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Cervantes Prize, awarded to the greatest living writers in Spanish by the Spanish Government, in 1994. Winner of the Jerusalem Prize in 1995. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARIO VARGAS LLOSA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374247765.

Pages of Revelations, An Exhibiton Journal, Dedicated to the Spirit in Art

Newark: Artbuilders, Inc. 1986 - First Edition. Quarto, stitched bound. An artists' book book designed by Barbara M. Meise and Laura L. Cuevas from contributions by 150 students of the Warren School and the Harriet Tubman School of Newark, New Jersey. The book was printed by the Phoenix Printing Corp. of Ridgefield, New Jersey, with the covers and some pages hand colored by the students. The book reflects the pedagogical philosophies of the Generative Art movement that emanated from School of The Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, Chicago, and the Visual Studies Workshop of Rochester, New York. Each page is a photocopied artwork by a student; many are elaborate, sophisticated and carefully produced. A laid-in folded pamphlet contextualizes Meise and Cuevas's strategy of creating collaborative artists' books with students. An additional laid in pamphlet contains a price list from a joint exhibition. Altogether, an impressive and compelling example of a pedagogical parallel to zine culture. Near fine in hand-painted wrappers with bound in acetate covers. Scarce, OCLC locates two copies, one at the Thomas J. Watson Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Aurora Australis. Limited Edition Facsimile

Great Britain: Bluntisham Books / Paradigm Press, 1986. Limited edition, No. 51 of 58 copies. Hardcover. Very good condition. Regarded as the most authentic reproduction of the original publication, this is a facsimile and limited edition, bound in wooden covers and housed in a slipcase, Number 51 of only 58 copies. The original book was produced entirely by members of the expedition, in order to save them from what Shackleton termed "polar ennui" while the team over-wintered at Cape Royds on Ross Island in the McMurdo Sound. The original Aurora Australis was edited by Shackleton, and illustrated with lithographs and etchings by George Marston. It was printed by Frank Wild and Ernest Joyce, who took a crash course in printing in 1907 before departing for the expedition. It was bound by Bernard Day, the electrician and mechanic of the expedition. He resourcefully used boards from the crates in which the expedition's supplies were shipped and harness leather for the spines in binding the volumes. There has been an ongoing count of how many of the original were actually produced: 58 was the confirmed number of originals in 1985. Now the ongoing census on the Antarctic circle website states that Shackleton brought back 80 copies to England, of which 79 are listed as confirmed.Copies of the book are often identified by the original stencils on the inside of the covers. Two of the original copies held at the Alexander Turnbull Library in New Zealand are known as the 'Julienne Soup' and 'Beans' copies for the words stencilled inside the wooden covers. This facsimile copy has the work "WithCar" stencilled inside the back wood cover, likely part of "Handle With Care". The presentation inscription reads "With the Editors Kindest Regards. Ernest Shackleton. This Book was made, Bound, Printed in the Antarctic in 1908".8vo, xxiii, unpaginated (212pp), 10 plates, b&w illustrations. Bound in wooden boards, dark brown leather spine with title blind stamped. With explanatory booklet in yellow paper wrappers. 8vo, unpaginated (24pp), b&w illustrations.Housed in a blue cloth covered slipcase with gilt title at red spine label. The book and booklet in fine condition, the box slightly rubbed and bumped.

Michael Crawford. The first night of 'The Phantom of the Opera'. 09/10/1986.

745 x 520mm. Giclée Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.
