ORIGINAL ART: FROGGIE WENT A-COURTING [WALKING TO THE WEDDING]

      - CONOVER,CHRIS. ORIGINAL ART: FROGGIE WENT A-COURTING [WALKING TO THE WEDDING p.[11-12]]. Offered here is a double page watercolor used in Conover's Froggie Went A-Courting published by Ferrar Strauss Giroux in 1986. It is the story of a handsome humanized, seafaring frog's wooing of Miss Mousie. An entire world of humanized creatures is created around this traditional song with text retold by Conover. Reviewed by School Library Journal as a 'tour de force.'. This illustration measures 15 1/2" wide x 9 1/2", signed. The scene shows all of the wedding party and the guests in all their finery, walking to the wedding chapel. There are 4 boxes that are blank where the text would be inserted. Its a great image. Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers so many modern children's books. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Book has been hand sewn & handbound in full black, silk-textured cloth with shiny black on black lettering on spine & large X in a rectangle on front cover. The book comes in a special wraparound cloth covering consisting of three parts: a 8 1/2 x 11 1/4" piece of pasteboard with black cloth front with section of text in Polish printed in white lettering in a rectangle on front & a puckered type of white paper backing on reverse & two sets of black velvet ties to tie this around the next part, a 28 x 27" piece of white-backed, black, silk surfaced cloth with the name Polatuo in contrasting black on left side & a 12 x 12" white linen (or linen type) cloth square "napkin"/ handkerchief with the name Polatuo printed in black in one corner. In this copy the "napkin" was laid inside the front cover of the book, but the order of assemblage of these pieces may differ. Text is Polish with facing English translation & running lines of French, Italian, Russian quotes from Dante, Mayakovsky & Apollinaire (mentioned in the text); & a printed, calligraphic "bio" of Polatuo by Zdzislaw Jaskula in Polish & English. A few tiny spots to margin of paper on one page of English translation (numbered 151), else a fine copy. Rare item! To quote an earlier source: "Cardinal Polatuo was one of the most important books written by the Polish avant-garde filmaker/writer/publisher Stefan Themerson who died in 1988." And: [.] "Wrestling as much with Politics as with Poetry, he [Polatuo] patiently cuts a path through the undergrowth of Theology and Philosophy right into the court-room of Science, where he is face to face with a white square painted on a white canvas. 'It can be read either as lectio divina or just for fun'.- Aylesford Review." "[.] 'There are three poets to which my diatribe does not apply. The first is Dante. Because the essential substance of his poetry is prose, and the poetic form - its mortal body. The second, for a similar reason, is a communist martyr, Majakovsky. Because with him too prose is the imperishable soul of his poems. It is IT that determines the mortal layout of their shape. And the third, am I. Because my little poem is pure form. There is nothing in it. Not a thought. It is like an empty slipper, left by his Holiness on the footstool.' I moistened my lips with the remaining drop of Sauternes, and recited my little poem which you know: 'Mascaroninopoleva / Cascaroninopoleva / Lascaroninopoleva.' At this moment they brought un brochet de riviere pique, farci et baigne d'une creme d'ecrevisses, secundum artem, and laid it on the table between us. 'Beautiful,' said the Archbishop, though I was not quite certain whether what he said referred to the poem or the fish." For more on the English translation of the novel "Cardinal Polatuo", see the "Complete Catalogue of Books From Gaberbocchus Press (1948-1988) [1993]", which lists the 1961 GP edition & a paperback edition in 1980 from Gaberbocchus/De Harmonie. NECU (I WON'T)

Self-published, Zagreb 1986 - About idea and realization of this graphic map Darko Simicic wrote: 'As many other improprieties, the map I WON'T is also partially my missdeed. In the mid Eightees, Martek made a series of white paintings on kraft paper, and they were sliced in various forms. I contemplated how we could use this material for samizdat: it's expensive to photograph paintings, and xeroxing wouldn't record anything. One day, in early summer we sat in a caffe in Novi Zagreb. We were invited to an exhibition, a pretty amusing one: we painted on walls, bare walls and concrete walls, in a new building. Martek's works were wonderful: white colour stood out fatastically on the grey, rough concrete base. It was then that I suggested that we make a map of graphics, in two colours (white, gold) on kraft paper, and slice paintings in various forms. This would not take away much from a painting. Martek made a selection, and I made sample sketches, with polycolor and golden marker (they must still exist somwhere). I bought the paper from friends of friends, who stole it from a printing-house. And this wasn't enough, so we had to collect some more kraft paper, but this time it was thinner and pooresr in quality. Then I sliced theese papers, saving each centimeter, so that I could use as much as possible. We printed in Jerman's (Zeljko Jerman) and Vlasta's (Vlasta Delimar) house, and they were married then. Allways when You do something for Martek, the work is interrupted, and this was no exception: either the colour was wrong, or the paper was wrong, or it was we who were no good. Simuntaniously, Martek hounded Mangelos to write him an introduction. He added a second part to the text that was published in the catalogue of the exhibition from the PM gallery. The first idea for the map was concieved around 1st of May; the printing was done on 29th of November (Day of Yugoslav republic). Finally, we all sliced the printed graphics one evening at Martek's house. When everything was done, I numerized the copies, and Martek signed them. The entire work was finished in spring, on a state holliday, almost a year after the idea about the realization. Martek gave away copies of the map to his friends, and in autmn, we exhibited the map in a shop-window of a bookstore. Mangelos accidentally showed up: that was when I last spoke to him. Jerman wrote a brief text about the exhibition. Afterwards, nothing happened for years. When Sue (Sue Cramer, the co-author of the exhibition 'The Horse who sings - Radical Art from Croatia', Contemporary Art Archive, Sidney, 1993) visited Zagreb to select works for the exhibition, she decided to include the map. At the exhibition, she installed it on a red-dyed wall, and it looked very representative.(Lit: Misko Suvakovic: Martek, Fatalne figure umjetnika(Artist's fatal figures), Meandar, Zagreb, 2002.pages 244-245). Graphic map includes text by Basicevic - Mangelos and 15 graphics printed in 40 copies in silkscreen in Atelier Delimar-Jerman. Printing finished in April 1986. Copy 25/40. The only copy whith each graphic signed and numerated by Vlado Martek. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Matisse, Henri] Dear Mr. Clifford.

(Madison, WI) SailorBOYpress (1986) - Square 16mo. (7)ff. One of twenty-five copies. Illustrated with mixed-media collages, elements of which are at times integrated into the text, and two sculptural pop-ups that incorporate curved pieces of copper wire for an airy, kinetic effect. The collages are perhaps a nod to the large cut-out paintings, known as "gouaches découpés," that Henri Matisse made late in his life, around the time that that this letter was written. The endpapers are made of collage pieces encapsulated between sheets of translucent paper. The text of this artist's book is comprised of excerpts from a letter written by Matisse to Henry Clifford on the occasion of the artist's 1948 retrospective exhibition in Philadelphia. Matisse describes how the apparently effortless lightness and joy of his works disguises many years of training in drawing and sculpture, which he feels are essential to a young artist's development. He expresses concern that young artists might view his work and feel that they could dispense with the traditional artists' training altogether. However, Matisse writes, "If drawing belongs to the realm of the Spirit and colour to that of the Senses, you must draw first to be able to cultivate the Spirit and to be able to lead colour through the paths of the Spirit." According to Matisse, careful study and preparation are the path that leads an artist to truly learn to paint from the heart: "It is only after years of preparation that the young artist should touch colour -- not colour as description, but as a means of personal expression." As an artist himself and the creator of this book, Jeffrey Morin clearly connected with the content of the letter, and in the colophon he writes that he "wishes to bring this letter to light -- admitting its influence and importance." Bound in tan buckram. Spine slightly cocked, else very fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kent: Privately Printed by Kindlight, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover.. Fine/Fine. One of only 500 copies. 8vo, 130pp. Hessian boards. Black and white photographs. No Inscriptions. Tight and clean. No marks, scratches or bumps. In peach slip as issued which is also fine. More images available on request. Very beautiful and amazingly scarce. "Cathy gives a fascinating glimpse into the childhood of a young person who has grown into the remarkable and famous adult. As she poses for the photographs, often at times snatched after school, an image builds up of what this little girl's world was like. These innocent moments are linked with the thoughts and memories of her photographer-brother as he printed and prepared the pictures for publication. Cathy contains neither gossip nor scandal. It is a gentle, very personal view of childhood, and for those already familiar with Kate as a modern-day artist, it is a treasure-trove of echoes and evocations." A truly magical book.
