        J. D. Salinger. A Writing Life

New York: Random House,, 1986. Octavo. Original yellow wrappers printed in black. Housed in a flat back cloth solander box. Very lightly rubbed, an excellent copy. First edition, unpublished, first state of the uncorrected proofs bound from sheets of the May setting with all suppressed content extant. With the incorrect spelling of the author's name (Hamiton) to the upper wrapper and title page. In writing about Salinger's life Hamilton quoted from a number of the author's unpublished letters, believing that the fair use doctrine would trump any legal action Salinger might bring. This copy is from the first set of proofs released by Random House in anticipation of publication in autumn 1986. Salinger, however, saw these proofs and requested that all the quotes be removed under threat of legal action. Hamilton set about revising the book by paraphrasing even more of the quotations, though it was "unpleasant work and I disliked having to throw out most of Salinger's best lines. In almost every instance, I was deadening his language; I was making him seem duller than he was" (Hamilton, Granta, 1988). A second set of proofs was released in September, but despite the revisions Salinger took Random House to court. The resulting legal manoeuvers, culminating in a Supreme Court case, resulted in a final judgment in favour of Salinger. This, the first state of the uncorrected proofs, is the only record of the biography as Hamilton originally intended it to be published, and the only appearance in print of significant portions of the Salinger letters from which Hamilton quoted. A scarce and significant Salinger item.

Faksimile - Tschachtlans Bilderchronik. Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Ms. A 120. (2 Bde.).

Luzern, Faksimile-Vlg., 1986 - 4° (30 x 22 cm), 1060 S., 230 teilw. ganzseitige farb. Bilder; Kommentarbd.: 480 S., Geprägter Ganzledereinband (Kommentarbd. HLdr.) mit zwei Schliessen., Tadellos. Vergriffen!

An archive of correspondence from the author

N.p., N.p. 1986 - A collection of 4 autograph letters signed by Kenneth Millar (a.k.a. Ross Macdonald), quite strong in content, addressing a wide range of topics. Also included is a very humorous response to a "Celebrity Questionnaire." Ranging from 1955, the letters typically detailed, lengthy, and thoughtful.Among the topics addressed in the letters are: an effusive recommendation for fellow author Dennis Lynds (a.k.a. Michael Collins) for a Guggenheim fellowship, the deal for the 1973 film version of "The Drowning Pool" ("judged by the principals involved, it looks very promising"), his reading (a long discussion of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Tristram Shandy"), reactions to jacket artwork ("'The Goodbye Look' seems to me an improvement over that for 'The Instant Enemy'"), his excitement over seeing praise from Elizabeth Bowen, Charles Portis, and even English poet Donald Davie (who called "The Galton Case" "a great novel"), a review of his work by Ray Bradbury in the Los Angeles Times, a hilarious Celebrity Yearbook Questionnaire ("Favorite Expression: 'Do not become alarmed' / Greatest Hero: Freud").The cornerstone of the collection is a lengthy rumination by Millar on his own standing in the pantheon of crime fiction writers. He is rueful of the fact that the Collins Crime Club editions of his novels in England put across a more "traditional" crime fiction style that leads reviewers to comparisons with Hammett and Chandler. He puts forth the idea (one that is now very much accepted by historians) that his fiction is what American critic Samuel French Morse calls "almost.a new genre." He writes: "This view of me is making great headway in this country at last," and suggests that his British publisher consider publishing "an omnibus of three or four of my best books, suitably introduced, [which might] convey a new message."Letters are all Near Fine, some on Macdonald's stationery, some with his typed address at the top left, all dated.         Claude Monet

Newton, IA: Tamazunchale Press, 1986. 61pp. A colorful and and striking binding bound by Stuart Brockman and painted with the design of a water lily in watercolor across both covers. Monet's famous subject of the the water lily is set against a background of painted green and black stripes, and covered with transparent vellum. Brockman applied onlays of gilt-tooled black calf to the vellum, one of which is stamped with the title "Monet" in gilt. Brockman writes that the green stripes were inspired by the taffeta skirt depicted in Monet's 1866 painting "Woman in a Green Dress." Endpapers dyed bright pink to complete the binding. The text of the book is a scholarly biography, with chapters on Monet's gardens and a commemorative French postage stamp tipped in as the frontispiece. Housed in a black buckram box lined with dark green velvet and lettered in gilt to the spine. Brockman was named a fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2004, after winning first prize in its 2000 competition and being named overall winner at the 2004 National Library of Scotland Bookbinding Competition. A.e.g. (2 3/4 by 2 1/4; 69x57mm).
