        TERMINAL STATUS

[Np: Privately Printed by the Author, nd. but ca. 1986].. [8],176 leaves. Quarto. Photographically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only. Title- page and two sectional-titles printed at The Tragara Press. Black cloth, lettered in gilt. Fine. One of four copies, privately printed, of George Sims's otherwise unpublished novel, TERMINAL STATUS, a political dystopia set in the year 2055, in a world devastated by nuclear and biological warfare. Inscribed, signed and dated on a preliminary leaf by the author to Alan Anderson of The Tragara Press : "Number two of four copies. For Alan from his friends George and Beryl 10.x.86," and with Anderson's booklabel. There are a few scattered original manuscript corrections in the text. Sims inscribed another copy (#3): "The germinal idea for this book came to me on a coach trip from Alpbach to Munich (in 1975)...Unpublished and probably unpublishable (because of the unforeseen collapse of Communism). I sent a typescript of the book to Graham Greene who liked the book but thought I made the 'Glossary' too long and too complicated. Plenty of action and some excitement, with an attractive heroine and a very nasty villain." HALLIWELL, p.138.

        KDAY: A Day of Peace

Los Angeles: KDAY. [1986]. First. First edition. Quarto. [50]pp. Illustrated. Embossed buff wrappers. Some smudging on the wrappers, else near fine. A publication commemorating the Day of Peace, held on October 9, 1986. The Day of Peace was formulated by Barry White of RUN-D.M.C. in cooperation with Ed Kirby, the station manager of the pioneering L.A. hip hop radio station KDAY. The station aired a symposium with RUN-D.M.C. in which they invited callers to discuss gang violence and drugs in L.A. Gangs were urged to cease violence on the date, a peace which was for the most part observed. This publication features a collage of reproductions of clippings and news coverage of the event, as well as functions as a promotional piece for the station, highlighting several of their social programs and role in the community. A scarce and very uncommon document of hip hop in L.A. OCLC locates no copies. .

        The Immortal 2.9 - Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 A & B

1986 - The exotic Alfa Romeo 2.9 of which fewer than 40 chassis's were built before the war put a stop to things, boasted the kind of position in late 1930s motoring as the Bugatti Veyron has in the early 21st century. It was the ultimate high speed, high-quality road car of it's day. Author Simon Moore is the acknowledged expert on the 8C (and subsequently produced an equally lavish sequel to this book on the smaller and more numerous 2.3 ) The 2.9 book is large format tome of 251 pages packed with wonderful technical historic and period racing photos, covering the cars chassis by chassis,This book has clearly been read and re-read (and enjoyed) by it's previous owner so has some thumb-marking and along the opening edged of the pages and is certainly not immaculate or 'mint' and the jacket has some wear around the edges and corners, but the price reflects this as this title has become vastly collectible and it's value has risen steeply since publication in 1986.         Postcard to Roy Kerridge.

1986 - Postcard 14 x 11 cm, red ink on cream card with design of dove of peace to front, manuscript message with musical notation signed by Pete Seeger to reverse with US 22 cent stamp, sent from his home in Beacon, NY; horizontal creases across card, very good. This is a fascinating postcard from Pete Seeger (b. 1919), the singer and song-writer whose work in the post-war period made him a senior and pivotal figure in the folk revival of the 1960s. He wrote protest songs such as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" and "If I Had A Hammer" that were of central importance to the burgeoning folk and underground movements and which were inspirational to the young Bob Dylan, of whom Seeger was an early supporter. The Byrds were heavily indebted to him, including famous versions of his songs "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "The Bells of Rhymney" alongside several Dylan numbers on their first album. A card-carrying communist in his youth, he was blacklisted by US television for many years and continues to record politically-charged music together with his beloved traditional folksongs to this day. This little message to the British writer Roy Kerridge reveals Seeger the musicologist, tracing the origins of the song "Kumbaya" back to the South Carolina gospel song "Come by here" , with the observation, which once made seems so obvious that one wonders why one had never noticed it before, that it uses the melody of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Kerridge is a man thoroughly in tune with Seeger's beliefs. In his 2011 autobiographical novel Stalin's Schoolboy, Kerridge, who was brought up by Marxist parents, puts this definition of communism into the mouth of his 11 year old self: "‘It means that you like Russia more than England, you don’t like God and Empire, but you do like folk tales and folksongs. You like primitive people better than white people, so you stick up for the Indians, not Cowboys'". [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Handmade paper by Twinrocker. Color etchings by Goldyne. Laid in drop leaf box . Additional etching in folder. Signed on the colophon by artist and author. Britannica Online Encyclopedia: "Lewis Thomas, (born Nov. 25, 1913, Flushing, NY., US—died Dec. 3, 1993, New York, N.Y.), American physician, researcher, author, and teacher best known for his essays, which contain lucid meditations and reflections on a wide range of topics in biology. "Lewis attended Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., and Harvard Medical School (M.D., 1937). He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps and taught at Johns Hopkins and Tulane universities and at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In 1954 he moved to New York University School of Medicine, which he left as dean in 1969 to teach in the pathology department at Yale University. From 1973 to 1983 he was president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center." "The Quartet" is a reprint of four essays by physician, researcher, and author Lewis Thomas, whose lucid essays on biology appeared in "The Lives of a Cell," "The Medusa and the Snail," and "Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony." "The Tucson Zoo": "We are endowed with genes which code out our reaction to beavers and otters, maybe our reaction to each other as well. We are stamped with stereotyped, unalterable patterns of response, ready to be released." "Probability and Possibility": "We are alive against the stupendous odds of genetics, infinitely outnumbered by all the alternates who might, except for luck, be in our places. Even more astounding is our statistical improbability in physical terms. The normal, predictable state of matter throughout the universe is randomness, a relaxed sort of equilibrium, with atoms and their particles scattered around in an amorphous muddle. We, in brilliant contrast, are completely organized structures, squirming with information at every covalent bond. " "Death in the Open": "In our way, we conform as best we can to the rest of nature. The obituary pages tell us of the news that we are dying away, while the birth announcements, in finer print, off at the side of the page, inform us of our replacements, but we get no grasp from this of the enormity of the scale. There are 3 billion of us on the earth, and all 3 billion must be dead, on a schedule, with this lifetime. The vast mortality, involving something over 50 million of us each year, takes place in relative secrecy. We will need to learn more about the cycling of life in the rest of the system, and about our connection to the process. Everything that comes alive seems to be in trade for something that dies, cell for cell. There might be some comfort in the recognition of synchrony, in the information that we all go down together, in the best of company." "On Matters of Doubt": "What we have been learning in our time is that we really do not understand this place or how it works, and we comprehend ourselves least of all. And the more we learn, the more we are ?- or ought to be ?- dumbfounded.

        Night Feet on Earth

London, England:: Ken Campbell,, 1986.. Edition of 50. 11.75 x 10.25"; 40 pages. Printed letterpress in four colours from woodletter and handcut zinc blocks. Slipcased. Ken Campbell: "The recent visitation by Halley's Comet, and its image upon the Bayeux Tapestry, brought forth a poem about comets and a divine child descending; a rather pagan Christmas Carol. The poem is set in airily spaced woodletter capitals, and is alternately revealed either in white space or on a dark, starry backdrop. A comet appears. Its form is gained from the back leg and tail of a dark horse that moves about the printed firmament. The horse is sometimes dismembered, and sometimes whole. "At a Christmas dinner in Oxford I found a party cracker on the table and opened it and found, along with the necessarily silly paper hat, a little plastic thing like an articulated hat rack. It was a horse that you could open and shut. I asked a lady to my right what it was that she did. After no little thought she replied 'My husband is a linguist.' I thought, 'I'm going to do a book about these bizarre conjunctions.' Halley's Comet, the horse, and this poem in my mind: that is the poem of the book. I cut out a zinc horse in its different attitudes, opened and shut, and moved it around a firmament of stars. The stars were holes drilled at regular grid intervals in a solid zinc plate that was to supply the blue black night sky. "The text is given in very few words for each page. At the end of many of the pages I show the first word of the next page at the foot of the text to give rhythm and to echo the tradition of cueing the eye for what is to come overleaf. Set in capitals about an inch high, the poetry runs from one left hand page to the following left hand page. On the right hand side is a big blue firmament of graded colour with yellow printed underneath to give a little light to the dark horizon. Sometimes the stars are white and sometimes yellow, to give a very mechanical but velvety rendition of the sky in regularly spaced stars. Over this disports a horse in black a metaphor for the comet; a metaphor for the divine child descending. "In the first half of the book the first half of the poem is shown on the white, left hand page while the second half of poem is pursued in the dark right. After a central spread where the parts of the horse are wildly rodeo-ed around the firmament, the process is reversed and the first half of the poem is pursued in the dark, left hand page, while the second half of the poem is revealed in the now white, right hand pages. "On the slipcase and the closing page the horse's tail has been distorted to give a fiery tail of a comet. This book is where the hooves touch the ground.

        La Belle Dame Sans Merci.

(Shaker Heights, OH) Wind and Harlot Press 1986 - 12pp. One of twenty-three copies. Keats's ballad of a knight wooed by a beautiful and wild "faery's child," and then abandoned by her, haggard and pale, on the cold hillside. In a designer binding by Paul Delrue depicting the setting at the poem's beginning and end: the countryside after harvest has ended, a barren and empty landscape with a sloping hill and the silhouettes of birds overhead. A rustic fence borders the pale green, tan and brown fields, all created using Delrue's signature "Lacunose artwork." In this technique, Delrue covered the boards first with tan goatskin, and then many layers of leather in autumnal hues, some puckered and others flat, were overlapped and then alternately sanded down smooth and varnished with PVA to create various effects. The Lacunose panels are set onto the goatskin background intentionally askew, echoing the knight's disorientation, and bordered by blind-stamped circles. The endpapers are grey and violet paper handmade by the artist with flecks of gold and silver. In a handmade-paper chemise, and a cloth and handmade-paper covered box with a gusseted pocket for the book. Extremely fine. (3 by 2 1/8; 77x53mm). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
