Another essay examines the nature of Ottoman taste in this field, showing how porcelain was regarded at the court, and for what purposes and on what occasions it was used. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A full working bibliography, a concordance and a thorough index also appear in Vol. I. This is followed by a section of color plates and then an illustrated inventory of the celadon wares, ranging from the 13th to the 15th centuries and including Jingdezhen porcelain and Southeast Asian celadons.. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Near Fine/Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Limited Edition.

The Philosophy of W.V. Quine. [Signed / Inscribed Association copy]

La Salle, : Open Court, . First Edition.. Excellent condition. Inscribed and signed by Willard Quine to his greatest student and protegé Donald Davidson and his wife Marcia: "for Don and Marcia with fond regards". An astonishing association !. First Edition. La Salle, Open Court, 1986. 15.8cm x 23.5cm. XVI, 705 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. Excellent condition. Inscribed and signed by Willard Quine to his greatest student and protegé Donald Davidson and his wife Marcia: "for Don and Marcia with fond regards". An astonishing association ! [The Library of Living Philosophers Volume XVIII]. Includes for example: Quine's Autobiography, 25 critical essays, Quine's Replies to his critics and Quine Bibliography. Willard Van Orman Quine (/kwa?n/; June 25, 1908 ?- December 25, 2000) (known to intimates as "Van") was an American philosopher and logician in the analytic tradition, recognized as "one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century." From 1930 until his death 70 years later, Quine was continually affiliated with Harvard University in one way or another, first as a student, then as a professor of philosophy and a teacher of logic and set theory, and finally as a professor emeritus who published or revised several books in retirement. He filled the Edgar Pierce Chair of Philosophy at Harvard from 1956 to 1978. A recent poll conducted among analytic philosophers named Quine as the fifth most important philosopher of the past two centuries. He won the first Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy in 1993 for "his systematical and penetrating discussions of how learning of language and communication are based on socially available evidence and of the consequences of this for theories on knowledge and linguistic meaning." In 1996 he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for his "outstanding contributions to the progress of philosophy in the 20th century by proposing numerous theories based on keen insights in logic, epistemology, philosophy of science and philosophy of language." Quine falls squarely into the analytic philosophy tradition while also being the main proponent of the view that philosophy is not conceptual analysis but the abstract branch of the empirical sciences. His major writings include "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" (1951), which attacked the distinction between analytic and synthetic propositions and advocated a form of semantic holism, and Word and Object (1960), which further developed these positions and introduced Quine's famous indeterminacy of translation thesis, advocating a behaviorist theory of meaning. He also developed an influential naturalized epistemology that tried to provide "an improved scientific explanation of how we have developed elaborate scientific theories on the basis of meager sensory input." He is also important in philosophy of science for his "systematic attempt to understand science from within the resources of science itself" and for his conception of philosophy as continuous with science. This led to his famous quip that "philosophy of science is philosophy enough." In philosophy of mathematics, he and his Harvard colleague Hilary Putnam developed the "Quine?-Putnam indispensability thesis," an argument for the reality of mathematical entities. ____________________________ Donald Herbert Davidson (March 6, 1917 ?- August 30, 2003) was an American philosopher who was "one of the greatest philosophers of the late 20th century." He served as Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley from 1981 to 2003 after having also held teaching appointments at Stanford University, Rockefeller University, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago. Davidson was known for his charismatic personality and the depth and difficulty of his thought. His work exerted considerable influence in many areas of philosophy from the 1960s onward, particularly in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and action theory. While Davidson was an analytic philosopher, and most of his influence lies in that tradition, his work has attracted attention in continental philosophy as well, particularly in literary theory and related areas. Although published mostly in the form of short, terse essays which do not explicitly rely on any overriding theory, his work is nonetheless noted for a highly unified character—the same methods and ideas are brought to bear on a host of apparently unrelated problems—and for synthesizing the work of a great number of other philosophers. He developed an influential truth-conditional semantics, attacked the idea of mental events as governed by strict psychological laws, and rejected the conception of linguistic understanding as having to do with conventions or rules, concluding famously that "there is no such thing as a language, not if a language is anything like what many philosophers and linguists have supposed. There is therefore no such thing to be learned, mastered, or born with." His philosophical work as a whole is said to be concerned with how human beings communicate and interact with each other.         O RIO DE JANEIRO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(WEBER, BRUCE). Weber, Bruce. O RIO DE JANEIRO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL BY BRUCE WEBER - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed Presentation Copy from the Photographer. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1986. First Edition. Folio. Pictorial Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Very Good -. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English and Portuguese. Drawings by Richard Giglio. Designed by Sam Shahid, Rise Daniels and Donald Sterzin. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Bruce Weber's second book - an outrageously lavish paperback that was published at the then unheard of price of $60.00! - is a joyous celebration of the cultural diversity of Brazil. Filled with tanned, elegant bodies on the beach, and in hotels and nightclubs, "O Rio de Janeiro" portrays the city's youthful hedonism in a way that had not been captured before, or since. One of the most notable aspects of this book is the many portraits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie, and his fifteen member family at work and at play. An internally handsome example of this most desirable early Bruce Weber title (cited on pages 254-57 of "The Book of 101 Books") additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED PRESENTATION "To ... / love Bruce / L.A. - Aug 23 - 88" in blue ink on the front free endpaper showing some light overall wear and staining to the wrappers and edges of the textblock along with some mild rippling to the front cover and the top edge at the front of the textblock from contact with moisture. It has been priced accordingly.         The Flood

Edinburgh, Polygon, 1986., 1986. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Pp188. Soft cover issue, published simultaneously with the hardback. Minor wear, read once. Signed by the Author, with his hangman's gallows motif below. This copy belonged to 'Apple' Jon Curt, flat-mate and fellow student of English at Edinburgh University, who graduated with first class honours but then abandoned his doctoral thesis after a year. By way of compensation Rankin made him 'Dr. Curt', forensic pathologist of the Rebus novels. Truly scarce- whilst technically more common than the hardback (around 750 copies compared with 300), our experience shows this as the more elusive of the two (no others available at time of writing). This may be down to the fact that paperbacks are read and lost/discarded more often than hardbacks.

        Elefantômas

Brewster, MA: Atelier Emily Trevor, 1986. Gorey, Edward. From an edition of thirty-six copies, signed by the artist, Edward Gorey, this is one of ten sets of monoprints numbered I-X. A suite of nine "ghost" illustrations printed on Arches cover paper, each sheet measuring 9 1/2 by 11 3/4 inches (240 x 397 mm). The suite features an elephant-man in a variety of poses, with the muted gray tones adding to the moodiness of the images. Toledano states that the sets of monoprints were announced but never completed; however this edition is evidence to the contrary. Housed in a burlap portfolio, as issued, with ties. Very fine.

        Lilith [SIGNED]

The Boxwood Press, Statesboro, GA 1986 - 1/25. Large quarto. Unpaginated. Original half yellow cloth over paper covered boards, with gold lettering on spine. Illustrated title page. Limitation page numbered and signed by Bernard Solomon. Splendid poetical essay on Lilith, one of the most fascinating legendary figures of Midrashic literature. Indeed, according to the legend Adam's first wife was not Eve but a woman named Lilith, who was created in the first Genesis account. Only when Lilith rebelled and abandoned Adam did God create Eve, in the second account, as a replacement. The legend was greatly developed during the Middle Ages, in the tradition of Aggadic Midrashim, the Zohar and Jewish mysticism. The resulting Lilith legend is still commonly used as source material in modern Western culture, literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror. This work is superbly illustrated throughout with 20 hand-colored illustrations by Bernard Solomon. One of 25 copies, of which this is copy No. 3. This volume was hand-printed on Hosho paper. Some discoloration on covers. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout (not affecting illustrations). Binding in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good, illustrations in fine condition.
