Hodder and Stoughton, 1985. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition, first printing, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1985. This is the second issue which is smaller in size to the first issue and has the flash on the wrapper stating, 'Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 1985'. The book has been signed and inscribed by the author to the ffep (and located, stating Orario). The book is very good only and has wear to the boards and a small black dot to the base of the page edge – no other inscriptions. In a near fine clipped wrapper which is a little sunned on the spine. Complete with the Booker Shortlist band. Hulme's success with this title had a negative effect on her state of mind and she became reclusive.         Aldus Manutius and the development of Greek script & type in the fifteenth century.

Sandy Hook, CT: Chiswick Book Shop, 1985. Folio (33.5 cm; 13.25"). xiv, 115, [9 (5 blank)] pp., 4 samples tipped in. In his classic 1900 work Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century (Oxford Press), Robert Proctor held Aldus' Greek type in contempt, much preferring that of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible. Nicolas Barker here reexamines the matter of Aldus' choice of Greek types and puts a different spin on it, showing the design of the types "was influenced not only by contemporary scribal practice, but also by the expectations of his customers, accustomed to reading secular literature in manuscripts of very complex visual texture written in these cursive scripts" (Snipes).    In addition to presenting Barker's highly illustrated study, the volume has tipped in => a sample leaf printed in each of the four distinct Greek types developed by the press: From the first Aldine editions of Aristotle, 1497; Crastonus' Dictionarium Graecum, 1497; Euripides, 1503; and the Septuagint, 1518.    Printed in an edition of 500 copies, with "design and calligraphy by Stephen Harvard, printed and bound by Meriden-Stinehour Press," this bears => a title-page in red with white calligraphic lettering.    => Both the Euripides and the Septuagint leaves have interesting contemporary marginalia.    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard (sans indicia).         Disbound and Dispersed 184. Snipes, "Aldus Manutius and the Development of Greek Script and Type in the Fifteenth Century," a book review of Barker's book, in Renaissance Quarterly, XVI, 1, pp. 120–22. Publisher's red cloth stamped in gold, in a matching red cloth open-back slipcase. Near fine. => Handsome and instructive.

Die cronycke van Hollandt, Zeelandt en[de] Vrieslant beghinnende va[n] Adams tiden tot die geboerte ons heren Jh[es]u[m] voertgaende tot de[n] jare M.CCCCC. ende Xvij.Leiden, Jan Seversz., 18 August 1517. Folio. With the title-page printed in red and black with a large woodcut between different woodcut borders, and 239 woodcuts in text, including 121 woodcut portraits. Black blind-tooled goatskin (1637), with gold-tooled title and binding date on side.

Adams A2252; J. van Gelder & I.Jost, Jan de Bisschop and his icones and paradigmata (1985), pp. 196-211; Jeudwine, p. 253, and no. 388. First edition of the famous and beautifully illustrated Dutch national chronicle, known as the "Divisiekroniek", because of its publication in 32 devisions. The chronicle contains various narratives of historical, ecclesiastical and hagiographical nature and is profusely and beautifully illustrated with woodcuts of various size and style. Only ten of the woodcuts were specially designed and cut for the "Divisiekroniek": apparently the Leyden printer Jan Severszoon used whatever he happened to have in stock. Some of the woodcuts are ascribed to Lucas van Leyden, Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen and Cornelis Engebrechtsz. Of particular interest is the black goatskin binding with gold-tooling on the front side and the spine. There are 21 other volumes known with similar bindings, all with the date "1637" on the side and a shelf mark on the spine, with a number at the top (here: "102") and a capital letter at the bottom (here: "E"). The highest number so far is "158", the letters run from A to F. Professor Jan van Gelder has shown that the volumes originally belonged to the art-collector Pieter Spiering Silfvercrona (d. 1652), who was responsible for the uniform black leather bindings. With an owner's inscription on the verso side of flyleaf by the Dutch engraver Frans Koerten (1603-1668), and owner's inscription on pastedown by Van Meurs (?), who bought the present copy at the auction of the library of Johannes Enschedé. Very good copy, without the often lacking index of four leaves and only slightly browned. Binding rubbed along the extremities, slightly damaged on spine.

Dorchester, Mass; Kyoto, Japan; Boston; and Orono, ME, 1985. 81 vols. 8vo. Original staple-bound colored paper or card wrappers. Some shelfwear to first series, occasional soiling to covers, but overall near fine. 81 vols. 8vo. Nearly complete set of Origin magazine. A large, nearly complete set of this important magazine of post-war poetry and poetics edited and published by Cid Corman (1924-2004), spanning four decades and comprising 75 issues plus six duplicates. Published in five distinct series, Origin began in the 1950s by showcasing the work of Charles OLSON, Robert CREELEY, William BRONK, Robert DUNCAN, Denise LEVERTOV and Paul BLACKBURN among others. Corman continued to publish the magazine over the following three decades, featuring work by the likes of Louis ZUKOFSKY, Gary SNYDER, Michael McCLURE, Clayton ESHLEMAN, Armand SCHWERMER, Theodore ENSLIN, and Ron SILLIMAN, as well as devoting space to translations of the poets of Europe and Japan, Corman's adoptive home. Of special significance is the work of Lorine NIEDECKER (1903-1970), the Wisconsin poet associated with the Objectivist movement whose compelling body of work is among the most undeserverdly obscure in 20th century American poetry. Corman and Origin played a crucial role in reviving interest in the work of Neidecker; Issue 2 of the third series, July 1966, is devoted to Niedecker, and her work appears in numerous other editions throughout the series. The set lacks only five issues from the first series, with the second through fifth series complete, and includes six duplicate copies of various issues. A breakdown of the set by series is as follows: *First series, 15 (of 20) issues, without issues 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19. With 2 duplicate issues (3 & 12). Spring 1951-Winter 1957. *Second series: 14 issues, complete. April 1961-July 1964. *Third series: 20 issues, complete. April 1966-January 1971. *Fourth series: 20 issues, complete. October 1977-July 1982. *Fifth series: 6 issues, complete. Fall 1983-Fall 1985 with four duplicate copies of issue four.

The afterword, "The Private Printing of the 'Jumping Frog' Story" by Samuel Clemens, first appeared in the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW (1894). A lovely copy of this American classic with many extras. This is a classic of American private press books and highly desireable.

        Lonesome Dove

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1985. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Larry McMurtry on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with a small closed tear. A very sharp example. A love story, an adventure, an American epic, Lonesome Dove embraces all the West- legend and fact, heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Set in the nineteenth century, it is the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana and much more. It is a drive that represents for everybody involved not only a daring, even a foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream- the attempt to carve out the last remaining wilderness a new life. "Everything about Lonesome Dove feels true . . . These are real people, and they are still larger than life" (Nicholas Lemann, The New York Times Book Review). Both John Milius and John Huston each attempted to adapt the novel into a feature film before Suzanne De Passe and Bill Wittliff decided to adapt the novel as a mini-series. It was then made into the four-part TV miniseries, which won seven Emmy Awards and was nominated for twelve others. It spawned four follow-up miniseries, Return to Lonesome Dove, Streets of Laredo, Dead Man's Walk, and Comanche Moon, and two television series, Lonesome Dove: The Series and Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years.
